Danny Murphy says Leeds "will" go down and names Farke's "biggest problem"

Danny Murphy has revealed why he thinks Leeds United “will” get relegated, despite the victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers, and named Daniel Farke’s “biggest problem”.

Leeds four clear of the drop after impressive start

Undoubtedly, Leeds’ number one goal this season will be to avoid relegation from the Premier League, and they have certainly made an impressive start to the season, collecting seven points from their opening five games.

Consequently, the Whites are now four points clear of the drop at this early stage of the season, after picking up what could be a vital result come May, defeating a struggling Wolves side 3-1 at Molineux.

Forget Stach: Leeds sensation looks like the best signing since Tanaka

Leeds United could now have their best signing since Ao Tanaka in this fantastic ace.

The Peacocks’ summer signings were responsible for turning the game on its head, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin cancelling out Ladislav Krejci’s opening goal, before Anton Stach and Noah Okafor got in on the act to secure all three points.

Although Farke’s side have made a solid start to the campaign, Murphy has since claimed he still believes they will get relegated, saying: “I still think Leeds and Burnley will go.

“I think the biggest problem for Burnley and Leeds is firepower. I agree with what we talked about earlier. I think all the newly promoted sides doing well is great for the Premier League.

“I’d like to see them all stay up, actually. But I don’t think it’ll be the case. Burnley struggled in front of goal. Leeds had only scored one, and that was a penalty, until Wolves kept giving them goals the other day. I like Leeds. Calvert-Lewin is a handful; that’s a great goal he got.”

Leeds' summer signings could lead them to safety

After making a poor start to life at Leeds, missing four big chances in the EFL Cup defeat against Sheffield Wednesday, Calvert-Lewin got off the mark against Wolves, and the 28-year-old’s top-flight experience could be key to their survival.

The former Everton man is vastly experienced in the Premier League, scoring 58 goals in the competition, and BBC Leeds’ Adam Pope was left very impressed with his all-round performance against Wolves, saying: “His attitude and confidence said ‘even if I don’t score, I’ll be fine’. His performance was fantastic from everywhere and having players like that in your team who know the Premier League makes such a difference.

“It’s not just the fact he scored, it was his overall play. His hang-time, winning headers, winning free-kicks.”

The Englishman is not the only new signing that has caught the eye in the early stages of the season either, with Stach receiving an 8.4 SofaScore rating against Wolves, the highest figure of any player.

It is understandable that Murphy thinks the Whites will go down, given that none of the promoted teams have managed to stay up across the past two seasons, but Farke has clearly recruited well in the summer transfer window, and Leeds have a fighting chance.

'I can't let my image be tarnished' – Santi Cazorla hits out at claims he had Real Oviedo coach sacked following rough start to La Liga campaign

Real Oviedo captain Santi Cazorla has been forced to defend his reputation following the sacking of coach Veljko Paunovic. Amid social media accusations, the ex-Arsenal star strongly denies any involvement in the decision, revealing the squad was shocked by the news as the club struggles at the bottom of La Liga and turns to a controversial replacement.

  • Cazorla denies involvement in Paunovic sacking

The former Arsenal star responded to accusations on social media by defending his professional integrity, stating he could not allow his reputation to be damaged by such claims. Cazorla revealed the news of Paunovic's dismissal came as a complete shock to the squad, who only found out just before a training session on Thursday.

What Cazorla said about the dismissal and his reputation

The 40-year-old midfielder was quick to defend his character and highlight his long, unblemished career record.

"I've been a professional for 22 years, and you can ask all the presidents, sporting directors, and coaches I've worked with. I've never had anything to do with a club's decisions to let go of a coach," Cazorla insisted at a press conference. "I can't allow my image to be tarnished, because I've always tried to contribute in every way."

He also expressed his gratitude to the departing manager, adding: "I'd like to thank Paunovic for his work, with whom I have a great relationship and was able to speak with him yesterday personally. I want to thank him and his coaching staff for everything we've achieved; they've become part of this club's history forever."

  • Oviedo's poor start and controversial Carrion return

The decision to dismiss Paunovic follows a difficult start to the La Liga season, which sees Real Oviedo sitting 17th in the table, level on six points with the relegation places after just two wins and six losses from their opening eight games. The club moved to reappoint Luis Carrion, a move that has been met with a mixed reception from the fanbase. Cazorla addressed the potential for division and issued a stark warning to the supporters. "There are two options: Kill each other or die together. I'm clear about that, and nothing is above Real Oviedo," he said.

    What next for Real Oviedo?

Under the returning management of Luis Carrion, Real Oviedo's immediate task is to prepare for a challenging home fixture against Espanyol on Friday evening. Their opponents currently sit ninth in La Liga on 12 points, making the match at the Carlos Tartiere a significant test for a struggling Oviedo side desperate to pull away from the relegation zone and find stability after a turbulent week.

Bates, Illing, Halliday star to level the series at 1-1

Strong all-round performances from Suzie Bates and Brooke Halliday along with a breakout bowling display from Bree Illing helped New Zealand breeze to a seven wicket win against Sri Lanka in Christchurch to level the series at 1-1.New Zealand’s bowlers set the tone with a frugal display after winning the toss and electing to bowl, restricting Sri Lanka to 113 for 7 in their 20 overs before Bates and Halliday made 47 and 46 not out respectively as the hosts cruised home with seven wickets and nine balls to spare. Bates was named player of the match after also bowling four overs for just 16 runs while Halliday also took 1 for 12 with the ball in addition to posting her highest T20I score.Illing made use of the early morning start picking up a wicket in the opening over and a second in the seventh as she bowled straight with the new ball to finish with figures of 2 for 18 in just her second T20I after going wicketless in her debut in game one of the series on FridaySri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu was well held as Eden Carson, Jess Kerr and Bates were rotated at the other end with the latter bowling a maiden to Athapaththu in her first over. The scoreboard pressure told when Kerr castled her for 23 off 29 in the following over, the ninth of the innings, with Sri Lanka stalled at 3 for 46.That soon became 4 for 53 when debutant Flora Devonshire picked up a wicket in her first over in international cricket.Sri Lanka steadied thanks to a 54-run stand between Manudi Nanayakkara and Nilakshika Silva. Nanyakkara made 35 from 32 with four boundaries while Silva made 20 from 22. But neither player could break free as Bates bowled four overs for just 16 runs while Halliday also took a wicket in her two overs for 11 runs. Kerr took a wicket in the final over to finish with figures of 2 for 29.New Zealand’s chase started poorly with Georgia Plimmer caught behind in the second over for just 4. Emma McLeod followed suit in the seventh over for a sluggish 11 from 13 but Bates controlled the chase at the other. Safe in the knowledge she needed less than a run-a-ball, she struck just four boundaries and only faced consecutive dot balls once in her 46-ball innings before she was caught and bowled in 15th over with 29 still needed to win.Halliday ensured they were knocked off with ease striking multiple boundaries in both the 16th and 18th overs as she made 46 not out from 40 balls to steer her side home and go past her previous T20I best of 38.The series will be decided in the third T20I in Dunedin on Tuesday.

Newcastle agree two signings as ex-PSG and Liverpool gems both on Tyneside

Newcastle United have agreed a deal to bring a former Liverpool player to St James’ Park alongside their move for ex-PSG defender Malick Thiaw.

Howe bemoans PSR restrictions as PIF ramp up business

It has been a hugely disappointing summer for the Magpies, who have missed out on key targets such as Bryan Mbeumo and James Trafford, not to mention having the Alexander Isak saga hovering over them like a bad smell.

PSR is restricting the amount that Newcastle can spend in the current transfer window, and speaking after his side’s 2-0 defeat at home to Atletico Madrid on Saturday, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe admitted that it is a frustrating period at the club.

Business is picking up however, with Keith Downie reporting on Monday that AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw is on Tyneside to complete a medical and sign for the Magpies.

PIF have agreed a roughly £35m deal for the Germany international, who broke through at European Champions PSG before moving to the Italian capital, but he’s not the only new face at Darsley Park this week as the board ramp up their summer plans.

Newcastle set to sign former Liverpool player

Fabrizio Romano reported this weekend that former Liverpool teenager Isaac Moran, who is a free agent after leaving the Reds in June, is set to sign a Newcastle contract.

The move has now been confirmed by the Magpies with the youngster on Tyneside already, and while this isn’t the shiny, big-money signing fans may have been hoping for, Academy Director Steve Harper is delighted: “Isaac joins us with a strong pedigree and a maturity beyond his years.

“The leadership qualities he has displayed to date speak volumes about his character, and we’re excited to help him continue developing both as a player and a person.

Romano claims the 16-year-old could be a future starter for Newcastle, and at a time where PSR is restricting business, growing top homegrown talents is an important strategy.

Newcastle United need more standout signings ahead of the Premier League kicking back off.

Now, it’s a case of the Magpies kicking on and doing some more pressing business between now and the end of the summer window, whether that’s persuading Isak to stay put, or bringing in a couple of top-quality replacements to lead the line moving forward.

After so much good work in recent years, it would be disheartening to see it all go to waste and Howe’s side take a step backwards in 2025/26, so the club must add to their midfield and forward ranks in the coming weeks.

Burnley submit enquiry for "talented" £8.5m ace who's held talks with Ipswich

Burnley have now submitted an enquiry to sign a “talented” midfiedler ahead of rival interest from Ipswich Town, according to a new report.

Burnley’s Trafford set for Man City move

Since the end of last season, Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford has been linked with a move away from Turf Moor. The England under-21 international played a significant role in the Clarets’ promotion, as he kept a staggering 29 clean sheets in 45 Championship games, conceding just 16 goals in the process.

Newcastle United have been chasing Trafford for a while and even made an offer in the region of £40 million. However, the Magpies have lost out in the race, as Manchester City have now agreed a deal with Burnley to sign Trafford. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Blues have triggered their buyback clause, which is under £40 million, and the player himself has now given the go-ahead to the move.

James Trafford

The Clarets are now expected to enter the market to find a replacement for Trafford, with it being reported earlier in the transfer window that they were interested in signing goalkeeper Daniel Peretz from Bayern Munich, as they look to use their connection with old manager Vincent Kompany to get an understanding of a possible transfer.

But the Lancashire side are not solely focusing on a new goalkeeper, as they are now challenging a Championship rival for the signing of a midfielder with experience at the highest level.

Burnley submit enquiry for Cajuste

According to reporter Sacha Tavolieri, Burnley have submitted an enquiry to sign midfielder Jens Cajuste from Serie A champions Napoli.

The Clarets hold a “genuine” interest in the 25-year-old, as they appreciate his profile, but they are not the only team working on a transfer. Cajuste spent last season on loan at Ipswich, and chairman Mark Ashton has revealed that talks have been held over re-signing the midfielder.

Meanwhile, Aston Villa are also interested in signing Cajuste, as Napoli are willing to let the Sweden international leave for a fee of around £8.5 million.

The defensive midfielder joined the Serie A giants back in August 2023, and while he played 35 times in all competitions during the 2023/24 season, he wasn’t needed under Antonio Conte.

Last season, Cajuste, who was labelled “talented” by Kieran McKenna, played 30 times in the Premier League, 25 of which came as a starter, and he scored one goal in the process, which came against Nottingham Forest back in March. Cajuste did rather well in the Premier League, and therefore, Scott Parker may now see him as someone who can bring something different to his midfield options.

The Clarets do already have the likes of Josh Cullen, Josh Laurent, Hannibal and Aaron Ramsey, but Cajuste would add some steel and Premier League experience, which can be hard to find, especially at a relatively low cost.

'Make it a difficult night' – Liverpool star Conor Bradley aiming to keep summer signing Florian Wirtz quiet as Northern Ireland eye Germany scalp in World Cup qualifying

Conor Bradley is looking forward to playing against his new Liverpool team-mate Florian Wirtz, as Northern Ireland are all set to clash against four-time world champions Germany in a 2026 World Cup qualifying game. Bradley spoke highly of Wirtz, while also claiming that he wants to make the German sensation's night difficult with a solid defensive display.

Bradley is yet to play alongside Wirtz at Liverpool, as he only returned to action from a hamstring injury in the club's Premier League clash against Newcastle United last month and replaced the German attacking midfielder in the second half. Now, with the international break on, the duo are set to compete against each other in Northern Ireland's World Cup qualifier against Germany on Sunday.

AdvertisementWHAT BRADLEY SAID

Ahead of facing his Reds colleague, the full-back said: "Florian's a top player. There's a reason we bought him for the money we did. He's obviously had a brilliant few years at Leverkusen, and now he's come to us, and I think he started the season really well. He's really good with the ball, he's really creative, and he's not scared to take a few risks with the ball as well. He's a top player and I know it's going to be a difficult night for me, but hopefully I can make it a difficult night for him too."

Wirtz, who completed a £116 million ($156m) move to Liverpool from Bayer Leverkusen this summer, has featured in Arne Slot's starting lineup in all of their first three Premier League clashes. There was concern over his fitness during the Arsenal game, as the Germany international was replaced by Wataru Endo just a minute before the regulation time ended; however, Slot later clarified that there were no serious injury concerns.

Mark Wood seeks fast improvement ahead of crucial Australia clash

Paceman working on variations as he regrets the no-ball wicket that got away against Scotland

Mark Wood fires one down at Barbados•Getty Images

Only 60 balls were bowled in England and Scotland’s washed-out match in Barbados but there was more to glean about the defending champions than there was about their opponents, other than that Scotland have aggressive openers who fear neither express pace nor spin, whether it be the off or leg variety. That an experienced and skilful bowling attack created just one chance in half an innings was notable, alongside an appreciation of Michael Jones’ drives and pulls and George Munsey’s bag of sweeps.Scotland were 31 for 0 in the fifth over when Munsey skied a miscue off Mark Wood that eventually landed in Jos Buttler’s gloves, but a no-ball call from the third umpire halted celebrations. It was just the second front-foot no-ball of Wood’s T20I career, prompting an unfamiliar sensation of dismay.”I was panicking,” Wood admitted, speaking the morning after the match. “You just don’t want it on your mind… I bowled 13 balls yesterday, and one of them is a wicket and it’s the one I’ve no-balled. If any of the others was the no-ball, I’m probably sitting here thinking, I’ve got one-for whatever, it’s not a problem, but because I’m getting the wicket off that ball, it hurts the team.”That’s what disappoints me. If [Munsey] goes on … he reverse sweeps Rash and every time that’s happening I’m thinking, ‘oh no, that’s my fault again’. That’s the feeling I don’t like, letting down my team-mates. I’m come in feeling, ‘oh no, I’ve overstepped, I can’t believe I’ve done that’. I very rarely overstep. In practice I’m diligent with it. [Neil Killeen, England’s bowling coach] is going, ‘It’s fine man, move on. You haven’t a problem’. To have 0 for 11 off two overs in T20, you’d think that’s not bad. But if I was a touch more on it, one for 10 looks a lot better. We were just fractions off yesterday.”Wood was selected ahead of Reece Topley and was handed the ball for the first over of the match, with both decisions raising a few eyebrows. It was a rare occurrence; the only previous time he had bowled the opening over for England in a T20I was a week earlier against Pakistan at The Oval.”I was disappointed with the new ball and felt it could hurt the team,” he said. “I will address it in training before the next game. It will be a squad effort, this. Whether we mix and match next game, I will be ready whenever the captain or team needs me.”Related

Matthew Cross: 'We've got four games, and we've got to win four games'

Wood doesn’t expect to play every game of England’s campaign, as conditions and match-ups influence selections. He has been working on a slightly-slower-ball variation which he pulled out in his second over against Scotland. Munsey punched the first of these through the covers, the second time the ball hit the splice of his bat off a good length.”That seemed to go okay,” he said. “I thought yesterday’s wicket was going to be different, when you stood on it it was hard but when you bowled the ball stuck in the wicket a bit, quite slow. So it made the cutters more effective, not the slower-ball ones but the fast cutters. Munsey played one off the back foot for two and patted one back to me that gripped a little … so it’s adapting my game a little bit so it’s not just out-and-out quick as I can – I obviously like doing that – but having a bit more skill around it as well.”Wood has yet to unveil the other variation he’s been developing (“You will see it when I bring it in!”) but agrees that cross-seam bowling of the type mastered by Liam Plunkett in the 2019 World Cup could be key on Caribbean pitches.”‘Pudsy’ did that well in most conditions. But not necessarily a slow slower ball, maybe a drop in pace of 6-7 mph where you’re still driving it in [to the pitch] but it spits or holds a little. That’s what I tried yesterday and felt good with it, so maybe do it again and land it in a decent area.”I’ve bowled them before but not to the extent where I am as accurate with it, so I’m working on being more pinpoint, so not just bowling it and expecting something to happen – the best players pick up everything – but you have to land it in a good place as well.”Wood’s only previous experience playing in the Caribbean was England’s tour ahead of the 2019 World Cup, during which he took his first Test five-wicket haul and was player of the match for the third Test in Saint Lucia. Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer have provided him with local knowledge, as has Kieron Pollard, who – along with Andrew Flintoff – has joined England’s coaching staff as a specialist consultant for this tournament.”I think he’s still feeling his way into the group,” Wood said of Pollard. “But the little bits he has spoken about, everyone’s listened. He carries an aura and is very respected in the group because he’s done so much and I think knowing the conditions is going to be vital going forward. He had mentioned about the pitch yesterday about bowling cutters and the fact that, if you just sort of dib it there, it doesn’t react. You need to drive it in. It’s just little things. It might seem so obvious but those little things people say – the one-percenters – can make a big difference.””[Flintoff] comes up to people individually, pulls them aside and keeps things very simple. He mentioned to me that he didn’t have a slower ball. And I was thinking I very rarely bowl slower balls. He told me had three balls – a bouncer, a fast yorker and a hard length. He’s great to have around the group, easy to talk to and carries that natural aura. He’s a big guy, it’s a clash of the titans with him and Pollard together!”Speaking of big clashes, the shared points with Scotland could have huge implications for Group B and Saturday’s match against Australia.”It puts a different spin. If we win that game compared to losing, it has a different look and feel. Lose, and I’m sure for you guys in the media there will be questions asked like the last World Cup in India, so it’ll be an important game for us and one we’ll be desperately trying to win.”
