  • Questions asked of big money price tag
  • On the scoresheet in derby date with Fulham
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Ukraine international winger was acquired by the Blues in an £89 million ($107m) transfer deal during the January window. He has struggled to live up to expectations, with questions being asked of whether he could end up being a big money flop.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Mudryk has stuck to the task of proving his worth, though, and got himself on the scoresheet during a derby date with Fulham. He is now being backed by those around him – including Stamford Bridge team-mate Levi Colwill – to become “one of the best players in the world”, with there still plenty of potential in his game to unlock.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Mudryk will not be shying away from any challenge, with the jet-heeled 22-year-old revealing on social media that he has been sporting shin pads that display the message: “Can’t, Can’t, Can’t, Can.” He has now delivered recognisable end product and will be hoping that there is plenty more to come.

  • WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

Mauricio Pochettino has never doubted Mudryk’s ability to come good and told reporters after seeing the energetic forward score at Craven Cottage before being replaced at half-time as a precaution – with another injury the last thing that Chelsea need right now: “For ‘Mischa’ he scored his first goal in the Premier League, and for Armando [Broja] after a long period out, he scored again. I’m so happy for them, they deserve it. We need to understand that young people need time and need to settle. It’s about adaptation.”

Pundit backs McAvennie’s Celtic criticism

Sky Sports pundit Lee Hendrie has told The Transfer Tavern in an exclusive interview that he can understand why former Celtic striker Frank McAvennie has called out the likes of Kristoffer Ajer and Ryan Christie.

Celtic endured a disastrous season as they handed over their title to their fierce rivals, and McAvennie has not held back when discussing some of the players at his old club.

The retired forward told The Herald last month that he can’t work out why Ajer doesn’t want to head the ball, while he hit out at Christie for not doing enough when speaking to Football Insider.

Scathing criticism, but it did not surprise Hendrie, who spoke exclusively to TT about Celtic’s miserable campaign. On the subject, the ex-Aston Villa midfielder said:

“Yes, you can single out those players. I think they’re players you certainly look at and you want to stand up and be counted for, so there’s no surprise Frank’s dug a few of those players out.”

Ajer may not be a Celtic player for much longer, with the central defender currently being linked with a move to the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Christie’s contract is set to expire next year, though there has been some confusion about exactly when.

Arsenal player ratings vs Everton: Leandro Trossard stakes claim for starting spot with sublime finish off the bench to secure crucial win for toothless Gunners

Mikel Arteta's side picked up a first win at Goodison Park since 2017 thanks to a second-half strike from Leandro Trossard.

Leandro Trossard staked his claim for a place in the starting XI at Arsenal after coming off the bench to score the winner for the Gunners at Goodison Park.

The Gunners did find the back of the net in the first half through Gabriel Martinelli, but the Brazilian's effort was ruled out for offside and he was then forced off injured and replaced by Trossard.

Mikel Arteta's side made hard work of breaking down Everton until a flowing move in the second half involving Martin Odegaard, Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka was finished off by Trossard in spectacular fashion to secure all three points.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    David Raya (5/10):

Handed a surprise Arsenal debut in place of Aaron Ramsdale and had very little to do. A virtual spectator such was Everton's lack of attacking threat.

    Oleksandr Zinchenko (8/10):

Lively showing from the Ukraine international, who was one of Arsenal's better performers. Was good on the ball and ventured further forwards in the second half in a bid to help his side break the deadlock.

    William Saliba (7/10):

Easy on the eye and simply looked a cut above all game. Barely put a foot wrong and handled Beto well.

    Ben White (6/10):

Saw plenty of the ball but was never really troubled at the back – albeit against a timid Everton side.

    Gabriel (6/10):

Booked for blocking off Beto's run but no other problems defensively.

    Midfield

    Declan Rice (7/10):

Took control of the midfield and it's difficult to remember a misplaced pass. Was part of a lovely passing sequence that led to the only goal of the game.

    Martin Odegaard (7/10):

Will probably feel aggrieved not to have been on the scoresheet after twice being denied by Jordan Pickford. Played a key role in the goal and his usual influential presence in midifeld.

    Bukayo Saka (7/10):

Not his best game for Arsenal at all, and came in for some heavy tackles, but was effective yet again by picking up another assist.

    Attack

    Fabio Vieira (8/10)

Came into the team in place of Kai Havertz and impressed with some clever passing. Slid a lovely ball through to Martinelli but the goal was ruled out. Also created chances for Saka and Odegaard.

    Eddie Nketiah (4/10)

Kept his place in the starting XI ahead of Gabriel Jesus but never looked like scoring. No surprise to see him replaced by the Brazilian with the scoreline still goalless.

    Gabriel Martinelli (6/10)

Thought he had opened the scoring after applying a Thierry Henry-esque finish to Fabio Vieira's fine pass. Picked up an injury minutes later and was forced off.

    Subs and manager

    Leandro Trossard (7/10):

Came on midway through the first half after an injury to Martinelli and was pretty quiet until he broke the deadlock with a great finish from Saka's cross.

    Gabriel Jesus (5/10):

Replaced Nketiah on 65 minutes with Arsenal desperate for more threat. The Brazilian loves scoring against Everton but had few chances to add to his tally here.

    Takehiro Tomiyasu (5/10):

Sent on late to help close the game out.

    Kai Havertz (5/10):

Given the last 10 minutes but no real time to make an impact.

    Mikel Arteta (6/10):

Made changes to his team, most notably in goal, but saw his team struggle to break down a dogged Everton side. His decision to start Vieira was a good one with the midfielder enjoying some lively moments but it needed something special from Trossard to secure the three points.

Erling Haaland, Bukayo Saka and the prodigious talents on the shortlist of nominees for the Men's PFA Young Player of the Year award

The Arsenal and Man City stars headline the group as the six nominees for the Men's PFA Young Player of the Year award are revealed

Bukayo Saka | Club: Arsenal | Nationality: England

The 21-year-old winger had a brilliant campaign for Arsenal that saw them finish second in the Premier League – their best league performance of the last decade. He contributed 15 goals and 11 assists across all competitions and is set to become a superstar for club and country.

Derby must avoid a move for Gregory

Wayne Rooney could be planning a move to bring Lee Gregory back to Derby County this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a report by Derbyshire Live, who claim that the 35-year-old Rams boss may be targeting a move to bring the Stoke City centre-forward, who spent the second half of the campaign on loan at Pride Park, back to the club for next season.

Speaking last month about the possibility of the £450,000-rated 32-year-old returning to Derby, Rooney, as cited by Derbyshire Live, stated: “Losing Lee was a blow because he was in good form. He’ll do his rehab and we will help him get back fit, and [will] obviously make a decision on Lee at the end of the season.

“I think he has been fantastic – attitude, energy, hunger. He’s very good inside the six-yard box, his anticipation to get himself in the right position to score goals is very good.”

Rooney must avoid move

While Gregory did manage to score three goals and provide one assist over his 11 appearances while on loan at Derby County, prior to picking up a hamstring injury that ruled him out of the club’s last seven Championship fixtures, there are a number of reasons why Rooney must avoid a move for the former Millwall man this summer.

Firstly, while the Derby boss may well be impressed with the striker’s hunger, energy and attitude, the fact remains that, throughout his career, Gregory has only ever scored 10 or more goals in a Championship season on two occasions – in his 2017/18 and 2018/19 Championship campaigns with the Lions, when he scored 10 and 12 goals respectively.

Secondly, with the £17,500-per-week forward still under contract for a further year with Stoke, unless Derby can somehow persuade the Potters to allow them to take Gregory off their hands for nothing, then he will cost a fee – something that, considering the state of Derby’s current finances, would appear to be a waste of money on a 32-year-old with little to no resale value.

Finally, there is an argument to make that there are much better options available for Derby in the transfer window, not only in terms of quality but also in price, with a number of impressive talents becoming available on free transfers this summer – such as Sunderland’s 29-goal hitman Charlie Wyke.

As such, it would be highly advisable for Rooney to resist the temptation to simply return to a player he knows in the upcoming transfer window, as the Rams need to make considerable improvements, rather than just treading water.

Spurs legend makes huge Gerrard claim

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Graham Roberts believes Steven Gerrard should be a candidate to become the next Spurs boss, though he has told Football FanCast that he doubts he would be willing to take the job.

The ex-Liverpool captain has done brilliant work with Rangers and has guided them to the Scottish Premiership title this season.

Indeed, the Gers are currently 23 points clear of second-placed Celtic, and have yet to lose a single game in the top flight.

With two matches of the season remaining there is a very real chance of Gerrard, who has only tasted defeat twice in 2021 against Slavia Prague and on penalties to St Johnstone in the cup, and his side achieving an unbeaten season.

Spurs, of course, are on the lookout for a new manager after sacking Jose Mourinho earlier in April.

Roberts played for both clubs and he believes Gerrard should be considered as a candidate, though he holds doubts over whether he would be willing to move to north London.

Gerrard, of course, spent all but one season in his professional career at Liverpool.

Speaking exclusively to FFC, he said: “Steven Gerrard has done an unbelievable job at Rangers but maybe this is another step higher.

“I think what he’s done there, I’m not saying a bigger club, I think Rangers are a massive club. But what I’m thinking is the Premier League, it’s another step.”

Arda Turan: Where it all went wrong for Barcelona's big-money buy from Atletico Madrid

The former Turkey international became a star under Diego Simeone but he went off the rails after a disastrous spell at Barcelona…

The signing of Arda Guler is already generating plenty of excitement at Real Madrid. Vinicius Junior, for example, has hailed the arrival of the Turkish teenager as further evidence of the club's enduring ability to attract the best young players on the planet: "Another one has chosen the greatest [club]."

The Guler transfer certainly represents quite the coup for Madrid, given he was also wanted by hated rivals Barcelona, among others. Indeed, he's already being touted as the best player to come out of Turkey since Arda Turan, a hugely divisive figure who left quite the mark on Spanish football.

Turan established himself as one of the best attacking midfielders in the world during his time at Atletico Madrid, but his subsequent spell at Barcelona proved a disaster. So, why did Arda flop at Camp Nou? Was he just not good enough? Or did he simply join at the wrong time?

Certainly, some would certainly argue that his move to Barca was doomed from the start…

'The board needs a player like Arda'

At the very least, Arda's arrival in Catalunya effectively coincided with the beginning of the end of an era at Barcelona, the moment at which Josep Maria Bartomeu started making one terrible transfer after another, which eventually led to him resigning in disgrace in 2020.

In the summer of 2015, though, Bartomeu and Barcelona were basking in the glory of a treble, the decision to sign Luis Suarez the year before having immediately reaped rewards, with the Uruguayan forming arguably the greatest attacking triumvirate the game has ever seen with Neymar and Lionel Messi.

Luis Enrique, though, felt he needed even more quality in attack, so he asked then-president Bartomeu to acquire Arda, an accomplished but abrasive attacking midfielder who could also play as a winger – and one of the key members of the Atletico squad that had beaten Barca to the Liga title in 2013-14, and reached the final of the Champions League.

Bartomeu was only too happy to make his coach's request a reality. As far as he was concerned, Arda wasn't an option, he was an obligation. "The board needs to sign a player like him – they have to," Bartomeu said ahead of his re-election as Barca president in the summer of 2015. "They must sign Arda and incorporate him as soon as possible so that he can start the pre-season."

Barca didn't waste too much time agreeing a deal with Atletico for an initial €31 million (£26m/$34m) and €7m (£6m/$8m) in variables, meaning he was indeed added to the squad in time for pre-season. The problem was, though, he couldn't actually play.

    A late start

Because of their ongoing transfer ban, Barca weren't actually able to register Arda. Consequently, he didn't make his debut until January 6, 2016 – nearly six months after joining – meaning he was playing catch-up from the get-go. He unsurprisingly struggled for rhythm and there was talk of a transfer at the end of the season.

However, Luis Enrique wanted to persist with a player that he had pushed to sign and, in fairness, there was a period in his first full season of eligibility that Arda appeared as if he might actually manage to lock down a regular spot in the starting line-up – not least after he became just the sixth Barcelona player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League, against Borussia Monchengladbach in December 2016, before then hitting another treble later that month, in a Copa del Rey rout of Hercules.

It proved a false dawn, though.

    'Valverde made me feel insignificant'

Arda was hindered by injury in the second half of the season, and even when he returned to full fitness at the tail end of the campaign, he barely saw any game time, spending the entirety of Barca's final four Liga games, and the Copa del Rey final, sitting on the bench. There was just no room for him in the MSN forward line, while Ivan Rakitic and Andres Iniesta were the preferred offensive options alongside Sergio Busquets in midfield.

And a change of manager did not improve Arda's first-team prospects. On the contrary, his Barca career ended the moment Ernesto Valverde replaced Luis Enrique at the helm. Arda didn't see a single second of action under Valverde before desperately accepting a two-and-a-half-year loan deal with Istanbul Basaksehir in January 2018.

"Valverde made me feel slighted," Arda told . "He said he was going to play me but he didn't. He said he was going to give me a chance but he didn't. Everything was fine when Luis Enrique was there. We had won the league and the cup. Yes, sometimes things didn't go as planned in the Champions League. But, with Valverde, I felt insignificant and decided to leave. No one, including Valverde, has forced me out of Barcelona. I have made the decision to leave."

    Arda's 'momentary mistake'

But it was a mistake, as Arda admitted himself. He picked up a Super Lig title during his spell at Basaksehir, but his time in Istanbul was blighted by controversy.

In May 2018, he was banned for 16 matches – later reduced to 10 on appeal – for insulting and pushing an assistant referee in the closing stages of a game against Sivasspor. And the reason for Arda's explosion of rage? A disputed throw-in.

Much worse was to follow, with Arda involved in a nightclub brawl later that year that left Turkish pop star Berkay Sahin with a broken nose. According to Berkay's wife, Ozlem Ada Sahin, Arda had made suggestive remarks to her and then attacked her husband.

An armed Arda later turned up at the hospital where Berkay was taken for surgery, begging for forgiveness and asking to be shot if the singer truly believed that he had been harassing his wife. Arda was ultimately given a suspended jail sentence of two years and eight months for firing a gun to cause panic, illegal possession of weapons and intentional injury.

He apologised for his "momentary mistake" and insisted that he had "learned lessons from these events."

Crystal Palace: Hodgson not 100% committed

Having lost 14 matches in the Premier League, it hasn’t exactly been a very fruitful campaign for Crystal Palace.

What hasn’t helped is a lack of clarity over Roy Hodgson’s future with the club.

What’s the word?

Hodgson is out of contract at Selhurst Park in the summer but it’s not known whether he’ll actually be staying in London.

The 73-year-old may well choose to retire but he hasn’t given very many hints over his future.

Palace chairman Steve Parish has been pondering replacements just in case he does leave, with the likes of Eddie Howe and Sean Dyche both being monitored.

Though, if recent news is anything to go by, he might need to ramp up his search.

That’s because The Sun claim that even if Hodgson is offered a new contract, there is no longer a 100% guarantee that he’d sign it.

As a result, there is a chance he quits football altogether this summer.

A big dilemma

If the former England boss is intent on stepping down in a few months time, it will leave Parish with an almighty dilemma on his hands.

The question on his mind, and indeed everyone’s at Crystal Palace, will be a simple one; who is going to be the new manager?

A number of faces have been linked with the post but external factors could determine who they can lure to London.

Howe is being tracked by Celtic but recent reports indicate he’s now finalising a deal with the Glaswegian side.

Dyche is an option for the Eagles but it would take nearly £3m to prise him away from Turf Moor. That fee is without considering the backroom staff he’d want to bring with him too.

Another name that Parish may look to tempt to the club is ex Chelsea manager Frank Lampard.

He was sacked by the Blues in January and is still waiting at home to find a new job.

If Palace are hoping to establish themselves more, Dyche seems a viable option. However, it’s hard to deny that Lampard wouldn’t be a more exciting fit.

He has a proven track record of developing youngsters at Derby and Chelsea, something that could prove game-changing for players like Ebere Eze, Tyrick Mitchell and Nathan Ferguson.

Parish clearly has a lot of thinking to do between now and the summer.

Raphinha, Moussa Diaby or Wilfried Zaha? Arsenal must sign a Bukayo Saka back-up in the summer transfer window

The Gunners winger has made 78 consecutive Premier League appearances for Mikel Arteta's team, and he has looked tired in recent weeks

Arsenal spent a lot of time last summer looking to bring in some cover for Bukayo Saka on the right side of their attack. Raphinha was the player they wanted, and they did make a bid for the Leeds United winger. But when that bid was rejected and Raphinha’s determination to seal a dream move to Barcelona became abundantly clear, Arsenal took a step back.

At that point you thought the Gunners would move on to other targets. Moussa Diaby, the Bayer Leverkusen winger, is a player they are known to have admired for some time, and there was a feeling the north London club could make a move for the 23-year-old. But they never did.

And when the transfer window closed at the end of the summer the only right winger who had arrived at Arsenal was Marquinhos, the 19-year-old Brazilian who had come in from Sao Paulo.

The capture of Marquinhos was seen as one for the future. He was talented, but he wasn’t a player who was expected to immediately challenge for the first-team. In fact, the expectation was that he would head out on loan almost immediately. So that left Mikel Arteta once again relying almost purely on Saka on the right hand side of his front-line.

  • Getty

A player in need of protection

Saka’s durability is one of his biggest strengths. No matter how many games he plays and how many kicks he takes, he always seems to be available. And for Arsenal, that has been hugely important during the past two seasons, because they haven’t really had anyone around who could fill in for him, should he be absent for a sustained period of time.

Reiss Nelson is one possibility, but Arteta has always seemed to prefer using him on the left on the odd occasion he has been handed any game time during the past couple of campaigns.

The fact Saka hasn’t picked up any sort of serious injury seems more down to good fortune rather than anything else, given the treatment he receives on a weekly basis from defenders. His team-mates and Arteta have long called for the winger to be given more protection from referees, but so far those appeals have fallen on deaf ears.

    78 consecutive league appearances

Saka has featured in every single Premier League game for Arsenal this season. The only game he didn’t start, against Leeds, he was introduced as a second-half substitute despite the fact he had been ill and hadn’t been able to train the day before.

In fact, Saka has made an appearance in Arsenal’s last 78 Premier League fixtures. The last game he missed was against Newcastle in May 2021, when he was an unused substitute. That’s currently the longest run of consecutive league appearances in the league (David de Gea is second with 75).

Since the start of the 2021-22 campaign, Saka has featured 74 times – again, more than any other player in the league. Of those 74 appearances, 71 have been starts. For a 21-year-old, those are remarkable numbers, especially when you factor in the games he has played for England during the same period of time.

They are also numbers, however, which show how important it is that Arsenal finally bring in some much-needed cover for Saka this summer.

  • Getty Images

    One goal in eight games

Saka may have the capability to consistently be available, but his performances in recent weeks suggest the incredible workload he has had to take on has started to catch up with him. Since scoring twice against Crystal Palace on March 19, the winger has started eight times for Arsenal and has struggled to find the same level of performance that he had produced during the earlier part of the campaign.

In those eight games, Saka has managed just one goal and one assist. Previously, he had been averaging 0.82 direct goal involvements per 90 minutes, but since the win against Palace that has dropped sharply, falling to just 0.29.

Saka is now taking fewer shots per 90 minutes (2.3 compared to 2.6), creating fewer chances (1.6 compared to 2.3) and having fewer touches (53.3 compared to 59.6). He also missed a crucial penalty during that run, firing wide in the 2-2 draw at West Ham.

    Arteta's need to rotate

When you consider the amount of football Saka has been asked to play, both for his club and his country over the past two years, it is no surprise that physically he may be beginning to struggle a bit as the season comes to a close.

And that doesn’t just go for him when you are looking at the Arsenal team. Up to this point of the campaign, Saka, Ben White, Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes have all featured in every league game this season for the Gunners. Saka has clocked up 3,041 Premier League minutes this season. For comparison, Bernardo Silva at Manchester City has 2,119, Jack Grealish has 2,063, Riyad Mahrez has 1,669 and Phil Foden has 1,612.

Pep Guardiola’s embarrassment of riches in the attacking areas means he can pick and choose who he wants for games, safe in the knowledge that the drop off in performance will not be vast. His players now look as sharp as they have all season as a result.

Arteta doesn’t really have that luxury. The core group of his team have started almost every game when available, and that has to change if Arsenal are going to take another step forward next season and compete not just for the Premier League, but also in the Champions League.

Man Utd making mistake with Pjanic move

Manchester United reportedly want to add to their midfield options this summer with the addition of Barcelona midfielder Miralem Pjanic.

According to Fichajes, Red Devils’ boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is a huge fan of the Bosnian and sees him as an ideal replacement for Fred in the heart of the United midfield.

However, Ed Woodward – who is set to leave Old Trafford at the end of the year – would be rounding off his tenure with a shocking mistake should he sign-off a move.

Since arriving at the Nou Camp, Pjanic really has been underwhelming. The 31-year-old has made just 28 appearances in all competitions for the Catalans, only managing to rack up three assists. Compare this to even his last season in Turin, where he notched three goals and eight assists in all competitions, it is clear that Pjanic is currently on the decline.

That aspect is certainly exemplified by the huge hit that his transfer valuation has taken whilst in Spain.

Having been rated at £63m as recently as December 2019, the former AS Roma man now sits at just £25.2m – a huge drop of just under £38m in a year-and-a-half.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/the-latest-man-united-transfer-rumours-and-news-from-old-trafford-fofana-solskjaer-van-de-beek-wwodward” title=”The latest Man United transfer rumours and news from Old Trafford…”]

Now over 30, there is no reason to suggest that he might be able to recover both his form and his rating.

It is mystifying then that Solskjaer wants to replace Fred – who is three years his junior – with the current Barca midfielder.

According to WhoScored, the current Manchester United man comes out on top in tackles and interceptions, clearly excelling in his preferred defensive midfield role.

Intriguingly though, the Brazilian also excels in an attacking vein too having racked up more shots, key passes and dribbles than Pjanic per game throughout 2020/21.

Again then, it seems bizarre that Solskjaer would see the Barcelona midfielder as a viable option in the centre of the park.

Should Woodward agree a deal to sign him this summer then he would be making another glaring error.
