Lynn McConnell19-Apr-2002Things could only get better after the disastrous one-day domestic summer in New Zealand.And to a certain extend they did.The annual CricInfo New Zealand survey of the State Shield has revealed an upturn in trends, all the more important because the members of the New Zealand team were available for only two rounds of the Shield this year.This has meant that what improvements there have been have been achieved by the lower echelon of players.That will need to continue next year when most of the international players will again by involved in games with India in the warm-up to next year’s World Cup.There are still some disquieting trends; the inability of Otago to be more competitive, the inability of players in the areas below the opening partnerships to post big stands and the seeming inability for players to register individual centuries in the two rounds of games.Against that, it must be said that to have an improvement this year, when pitches were not all that they could have been, was highly encouraging and a good sign for continued improvement.Wellington were the big movers in performance levels during the State Shield domestic one-day series this summer.Their Shield win saw them improve their placing on the overall standings by 3.8%. With Canterbury dropping from their lofty perch with a 1.5% decline, the margin between the two rivals is now just over 10%, compared to 16% last year.Northern Districts were the other significant mover with the second best winning ratio in the competition since 1993/94 when the two rounds of play was introduced. They have a winning percentage of 59.1.Otago recorded a 0.5% improvement but still linger well below other sides with their winning ratio of 28.0.Auckland and Central Districts both suffered declines in performance this year.Win/loss records in Shell Cups and State Shield (1993/94-2001/02):

There was a significant improvement in scoring levels achieved during the State Shield this year. The greatest lift came in the number of sides reaching 250-plus. This was up from six last year to 13 this year, and this in a season marred by frustrations with rain and the subsequent effect on pitches. As a result there two more teams that reached more than 270, which occurred in five matches.This may have been attributable in part to the best bowlers in the one-day game being tied up in Australia with the New Zealand team, however, the best batsmen were also in Australia which makes the achievement all the more impressive from a batting perspective.Innings score ranges in Shell Cups and State Shield (1993/94-2001/02):

While the number of centuries may be down, there is clearly a much greater appreciation of the need for better scoring from openers in the competition. There were five century opening stands, one short of the record, and up from only two in the previous summer. While there were 14 half-century stands which was up from seven. The average team scores offered some interesting statistical phenomena. Wellington, the champions this year, actually performed less impressively with the bat and scored an average of 4.1 runs less per innings than they did last year. That may be a reflection of their potency of their attack, and especially their lowly dismissal of teams like Central Districts in some games.CD actually managed an impressive lift in their overall scoring by 11.7 runs per innings, although their 180.7 was still the lowest of all sides.Canterbury dropped 4.6 runs per innings while Auckland dropped 1.9. Northern Districts managed a 7.9 runs per innings increase. As was indicated by the decline in the value of all batting partnerships, the average value of wickets throughout the competition, continued a decline which began after the peak of 28.12 in 1997/98. Perhaps one of the most telling figures, and one of the most encouraging is the climb in runs scored per over. CD, the champions from last season were the only team to decline. The overall average increased by 0.16 to 4.41 runs per over. Interestingly, Canterbury achieved the biggest increase with a lift of 0.31 runs per over. They are still the historical leader in the survey with their runs coming at an average of 4.53 while Wellington is back on 4.37. وأكد المصدر أن الاهتمام بضم باجا لا يأتي فقط من جانب الزمالك بل هناك رغبة من نادي موروكا سوالوز في الدوري الجنوب إفريقي بجانب نادي عزام في الدوري التنزاني.

Pakistan as a cricketing destination is still very much under threat of exclusion. Australia has not decided about the August tri-nation, nor has New Zealand. But there is every likelihood that the series, a quid-pro-quo for Pakistan visiting Australia in June for the second Super Challenge trophy and sacrificing the one-day series that was part of the Test rubber later in the year, would be a victim of security fears.That being the emerging scenario, Sharjah has jumped into the fray with an offer of providing the neutral venue once again. Pakistan’s frustration is an opportunity for the CBFS!The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has tried to duck the issue, at least for the moment. One can hardly find fault with this strategy, as forcing the hand of the Aussies, or the Black Caps, might have had negative consequences. Behind the scenes, efforts are being made to persuade the boards involved to come over. And to score a point or two over the doubters, the PCB approved the proposed itinerary of their visit to Zimbabwe earlier this week. Zimbabwe was the destination the Aussies declined to tour recently.As that trip is a long way off, in the first week of November, the alacrity in approving the itinerary is probably meant to imply that Pakistan would not opt out of a series on the pretext of security, whatever the situation. And the assurances of the host Board in this regard are good enough for them. There have been suicide bombings in other cricket playing countries and in one, an Indian ex-Prime Minister died while canvassing. Whatever the scale of tragedy, or the threat of one, life goes on. Has Manhattan been closed down after the September 11 tragedy?As things are, with the Australian Cricket Board keeping diplomatic silence, the PCB can only hope that it would give thumbs up to the only two activities that are to be held in this country in the next season. And if they keep Pakistan waiting for a long time, even if they come, the PCB would not be able to make the most of it, as it would be left with next to no time to market the limited-overs tournament.But what does the PCB do if Australia and New Zealand decline to tour? The threat of the Asian Cricket Council to boycott those who do not visit its members, which may have helped the Black Caps reschedule the series, even ignoring players fatigue, stands diluted. In the circumstances, a neutral venue remains the only option. And the PCB, while trying to convince the doubters, must not deprive its team of cricket and the revenue it could earn.This would not be very popular with those who follow cricket with a passion in Pakistan, but it is the only realistic alternative. However much we want to see Pakistan prevail over the Aussies with our own spectators exhorting Waqar Younis and his charges, if that is not possible there is no harm making the best of a bad situation.

Aston Villa’s valuation of Jack Grealish may be higher than £100m, that is according to Express & Star journalist Luke Hatfield.

The Villa captain is currently the subject of heavy interest from Manchester City and is likely to cost the Premier League champions a lot of money this summer if his boyhood club do decide to sell him.

According to talkSPORT, City could be looking at £100m as they close in on a deal for Grealish.

A deal may not be that far down the line, however, with other reports claiming that the 25-year-old could yet sign a new contract at Villa, while Hatfield has suggested £100m may not even be enough to get him out of Villa Park in the first place.

“£100m is obviously a lot to turn down, but I think Villa do rate him that highly if not a little bit higher than that,” the Aston Villa journalist told FFC.

“He’s only just signed a new deal, he’s blossoming for England and every good performance he puts in for the Three Lions now probably ups his price tag.

“Villa are doing their utmost to keep hold of him.”

£100m is a lot of money, but it is not hard to see why Villa value Grealish so highly.

Without European football, it is probably going to be hard to attract an adequate replacement for the England international, who provided the most Premier League assists in his side last season.

وتواجد جوارديولا في مؤتمر صحفي خاص بمباراة مانشستر سيتي ونيوكاسل، وتحدث باستفاضة عن هزيمة دوري الأبطال والحالة العقلية والنفسية للاعبيه، وكيف سيستعد للمباريات المقبلة المتبقية حيث ينافس ليفربول على لقب الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز. التحدي في الأيام المقبلة 

وقال جوارديولا: “نتعافى، نحن أفضل من الأمس وغدًا سيكون أفضل من اليوم، إنها كرة القدم، لدينا أسبوعان من التحدي الكبير، خاصة هذا الأسبوع حيث لدينا الموسم بين أيدينا”. حديث جوارديولا ولاعبي مانشستر سيتي بعد الهزيمة من ريال مدريد 

وأضاف بشأن الحديث مع لاعبي الفريق: “لم نتكلم، لا توجد كلمات يمكن أن تساعد فيما نشعر به جميعًا، إنها مجرد مسألة وقت، والنوم قدر الإمكان والتفكير في الهدف التالي”.

متابعًا: “سيكون غدًا أول يوم نجتمع فيه معًا وسنتحدث عن هويتنا كفريق، وما الذي فعلناه في الدور نصف النهائي، كم كنا جيدين ليس فقط في هاتين المباراتين ولكن طوال الموسم ونحاول القيام بذلك خلال الأسابيع الماضية”.

وأردف: “ربما تكون هذه واحدة من اللحظات منذ أن أصبحت مدربًا أشعر بالفخر لكوني في هذا النادي والمنظمة حتى اليوم الأخير الذي وصلنا إليه هنا، فنحن نقدم كل شيء معًا”.

According to Mundo Deportivo, as transcribed by AS, Barcelona are preparing to allow Tottenham target Miralem Pjanic to leave on a free transfer. The Spanish giants are willing to part ways with the Bosnian, and Samuel Umtiti, for nothing in order to finance a contract extension for Lionel Messi.

He said:

“I am very happy for Adem Ljajic, and I knew at the break we’d probably struggle on set plays. Other than those, we weren’t really allowing any chances.

“How did we resolve the situation? Gave Pjanic the ball and watched him score a genius free kick.”

The £270k-per-week gem, therefore, could be an exceptional signing for Spurs this summer. He could come in and add a new dimension to the midfield dynamic, with no Tottenham midfielder able to reach a WhoScored rating of 7.00 or higher in the Premier League last term.

This is why Spurs fans would love to see the Barcelona man at the club next season, with his amazing set-pieces and metronomic play in midfield potentially improving the club’s chances of competing for a Champions League place as his recent performances have proved that he is a level above Santo’s current midfield options.
