Leeds’ move for Perraud in serious doubt

Leeds United’s potential summer signing of left-back Romain Perraud looks set to ‘collapse’, according to a fresh report which emerged on Tuesday evening.

The Lowdown: Leeds keen on Perraud

With Ezgjan Alioski’s future up in the air at Elland Road, Marcelo Bielsa is expected to bring in a new left-back in the summer transfer window.

A host of players have been linked with moves to Leeds, but Perraud has arguably been seen as the front-runner to make the switch, having impressed for Stade Brest.

The 23-year-old made 36 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, showing his attacking quality with three goals and seven assists.

The Latest: Move set to collapse?

According to Football Insider, however, Leeds’ move for Perraud is now in serious doubt, with the Whites ready to ‘explore alternative targets’.

A Whites source has allegedly told the outlet there is frustration at the asking price Brest have demanded for the Frenchman, wanting between £15million-£18million for his services.

The Verdict: Time to look at other options

The news is a setback for Leeds, considering Perraud seemed to tick many boxes, but they may have to turn their attention to other players now.

Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico looks another strong option at left-back, possessing a wealth of experience and winning 27 caps for Argentina.

There is also a lingering chance that Alioski could stay put, which could make the need to sign a new left-back less important, and save funds for signings in other areas.

In other news, a pundit has made a big claim about the future of a current Leeds star. Read more here.

England U19s made to pay for missed chances against South Zone U19s

The touring England under-19s were left with little to cheer after the first day’s play in the warm-up match against South Zone under-19s, played at Guru Nanak College Ground, Chennai on Monday

Santhosh S15-Jan-2001The touring England under-19s were left with little to cheer after the first day’s play in the warm-up match against South Zone under-19s, played at Guru Nanak College Ground, Chennai on Monday. The touring party took this opportunity to play some of their squad players, but for most of the day, the bowling was pedestrian and the fielding was a let down. Dropped catches and fielding lapses might be a cause of worry for The Management, given the fact that they have their second ‘Test’ against India this weekend. South Zone colts also did not give good account of themselves; their batting never really bloomed on a harmless track. The setting was perfect, clear blue skies, brilliant sunshine and a pretty, tree-lined ground. Electing to bat first after winning the toss South Zone opening batsman Tirumal Setti Suman took 10 runs off the very first over bowled by Chris Tremlett; two boundaries flying over the slip fielders into the third-man fence. Suman did no favour to Nadeem Malik either, smashing him for three boundaries in the fourth over of the day. The fifth over brought some joy for the English colts, when Tremlett had Shashank Nag caught behind by Mark Wallace for just two runs: 31-1.Malik’s third over also saw Suman striking three boundaries, an explosive start indeed. Kyle Hogg was brought in from the pavilion end to replace the expensive Malik and immediately found his rhythm. Monty Panesar dropped Suman off the bowling of Hogg, but the batsman could not make the most of it. Hogg soon had Suman caught and bowled, the ball bouncing more than the batsman expected and all he could do was to pop the ball back for an easy catch. Suman’s entertaining innings of 42 came off just 34 balls, which included 9 strokes past the ropes. The fall of Suman brought Deepak Chougule to the crease. Chougule was the toast of the day for South Zone scoring 97 runs off 179 balls. Chougule, who does not have the height of many of the English players, stood tall on a day when South Zone batsman failed to apply themselves. The batting was ineffective on a docile pitch, which had nothing to offer to the bowlers.Chougule holds the junior world record for the maximum runs scored in a day, 400 not out against Goa in the 1996/97 season, playing for Karnataka Under-13. He kept working hard as batsmen at the other end kept falling. South Zone lost two more wickets before lunch. Ian Pattison removed captain Arjun Yadav for 10 caught brilliantly by Kadeer Ali at point. The next ball saw the new batsman ASK Varma dropped by John Sadler at slip. Pattison had reasons to rejoice his second wicket when Robert Ferley took a good catch in the covers to dismiss Varma for just one.The English colts were in a strong position after reducing the hosts to 62/4. The new batsman, Vijay Sai Suri, was distinctly lucky early on to survive a vociferous appeal for lbw off the bowling of Pattison, without offering a stroke. The visitors let the game drift on for a while and the lunchtime score was 129/4 in 38 overs. Chougule took his time and was unbeaten on 50.The post lunch session started on a sad note for the visitors. Chougule was dropped twice on 52; Gordon Muchall dropped him at point and John Sadler floored a chance in the slips. Chougule and Suri put on 134 for the fifth wicket as English colts relied on medium pacers. The 22nd over after lunch saw the introduction of the left-arm spin of Ferley. Success followed immediately as he dismissed Suri, caught by Nicky Peng running to leg-slip from first slip as the batsman top edged a sweep shot. Suri made 44 off 136 balls with five boundaries. A little before the tea break Chougule was deceived by the guiles of Panesar, drawing the batsman forward and getting the ball to turn and kiss the edge of the bat, Peng gleefully accepted the catch at first slip. Chougule was at the crease for 238 minutes facing 179 balls, striking 12 boundaries in his innings of 97.From 211 for 6 at tea, England failed to force the initiative. Ferley, who impressed with his spin bowling, had Mohammed Faiq caught by Kadeer Ali at silly point for 23 in the 82nd over. The second new ball was taken in the 83rd over and Malik, who had a miserable spell with the first new ball, came back with the second, picking up the wicket of Taher Hussain caught by substitute fielder Justin Bishop for 26. At close of play South Zone were 275/8 with Steve Lazarus and Shankara Rao on 15 and 5 respectively. Pattison and Ferley shared the bowling honours with a couple of wickets apiece.

West Ham plot Chris Wood swoop

Chris Wood is the latest name to emerge as a potential target for West Ham United this summer…

What’s the word?

According to Football Insider, the Irons have joined the race to secure the towering Burnley talisman in the upcoming transfer window, with the likes of Everton and Aston Villa also said to be keen.

David Moyes is thought to be a big fan of the 29-year-old and admires his physicality, finishing and ability to spearhead the attack.

The Clarets are expected to demand in the region of £30m for their star striker and that could even rise to £40m should a bidding war between the three top-flight teams occur.

Perfect fit?

It’s no secret that the Hammers are desperate to bolster their frontline this off-season and Wood is certainly an interesting candidate to fulfil their needs.

He’s a player that has been lauded as a great fit for the East London outfit in the past, with club legend Trevor Sinclair waxing lyrical over him to talkSPORT.

“You look at what David Moyes has built at West Ham over the last 12, 18 months and Chris Wood could fit into a side like that with no hesitation,” he claimed last month.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-latest-west-ham-news-irons-transfer-gossip-rumours-more-moyes-striker-gsb” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and more!”]

Wood has proven to be a prolific goalscorer in the English top-flight in recent seasons, particularly as Burnley are far from regular contenders at the top-end of the table.

As per Transfermarkt, the 6 foot 3 marksman has hit double figures in each of his last four Premier League campaigns, with a career-best of 14 goals coming during 2019/20.

In that season, Wood tore Manuel Pellegrini’s West Ham apart in one game. The Lancashire underdogs romped to a 3-o victory with the powerhouse getting his name on the scoresheet.

He ran the Irons’ backline ragged with five shots, three big chances missed, and four aerial duels won, as per SofaScore. Fabian Balbuena and Issa Diop just could not deal with his threat.

The former Leeds man has been described as a “natural goalscorer” in the past by ex-boss Garry Monk, whilst old Milwall teammate Scott Malone believes he’s “frightening” to play against.

These are glowing endorsements of Wood but perhaps the greatest compliment has been paid by legendary forward Alan Shearer, who claimed he is “horrible to play against” as he “won’t give defenders a moment’s peace.”

The Hammers have not had a viable target man option since Andy Carroll and you’d imagine that the 56-cap New Zealand international would have no trouble in fitting in at the London Stadium.

Whether that is as Moyes’ first-choice, as the perfect foil to Michail Antonio or even the pair playing up top together, he would evidently be a fine addition to help the Irons and their Europa League quest.

Second Test building towards gripping climax in Trinidad

A gripping final day in the second Test between West Indies and SouthAfrica seems certain after the home side, chasing 232 for victoryand a 1-0 lead, closed on 32-1 after dismissing the tourists for 287 in theirsecond innings

MWP20-Mar-2001A gripping final day in the second Test between West Indies and SouthAfrica seems certain after the home side, chasing 232 for victoryand a 1-0 lead, closed on 32-1 after dismissing the tourists for 287 in theirsecond innings.Shaun Pollock, Allan Donald and Jacques Kallis tried desperately toengineer a breakthrough in the 11 overs the West Indies were required toface at the end of day four and it was Kallis who succeeded by trappingWavell Hinds (2) lbw in the seventh of those overs.Chris Gayle played with his usual freedom, despite the pressure of theoccasion, cutting and driving Donald for a pair of boundaries in his thirdover to reach 18 not out while nightwatchman Dinanath Ramnarine survived, somehow, to reach 11.The day began superbly for the tourists who had fought back from 38-2 onday three to reach 130-2 at the close, a lead of 74. Daryll Cullinan andHerchelle Gibbs again began positively when play began on day four, collecting 42 runs in the first hour as Carl Hooper attacked in search ofearly wickets. The third wicket stand had reached 149 before Cullinan aimed a wild slogat Ramnarine’s leg spin but succeeded only in carving the bowler to BrianLara at cover to depart for an otherwise brilliant 73 from 178 balls. Butenormous credit must go to Hooper’s ingenious field placings and tacticsthat saw the normally fluent Cullinan score just six boundaries.Gibbs departed in the fourth over after lunch after five hours and 50minutes at the crease and, once again, it was cunning and guile thatdefeated him as Courtney Walsh persuaded him to shove the umpteenth “ribdelivery” to square leg where substitute Shivnarine Chanderpaul held a neatcatch diving forward. Gibbs faced 275 balls in his 87 and was also limited,by his standards, to 11 fours.A period of such intense pressure then followed that South Africa scoredjust 10 runs in the hour after lunch and a mere 45 in the afternoon sessionas Walsh produced a spell of 6-5-1-1. When he made way for Merv Dillon thewicket followed first ball as Lance Klusener (5) lashed out a Dillon’s wideloosener and edged to Gayle at slip.An out of form Neil McKenzie’s excruciating sojourn finally came to aend when Dillon flicked an inside edge to give Ridley Jacobs the catch andsend the batsman on his way for 25 scratchy runs from 134 balls.Mark Boucher produced a typically aggressive counter-attack but on 38 heattempted to pull a Dillon delivery that kept low, nipped back and rattledthe top of middle stump. The final three wickets, usually so productive for South Africa, scrambled just 23 more runs as the irrepressible, ageless Walsh pounded infrom the pavilion end for over after over to finish with 6-62 in 36 overs,as inspiring a performance as one could see in Test cricket. The home side may have been less well placed by the close had Cullinanheld a sharp catch at slip off the bowling of Pollock when Gayle was on 17and Ramnarine carved a Kallis delivery toward Boje in the gulley but thefielder failed to pick the flight of the ball and never moved.Although the pitch is playing almost as well as it has throughout thematch, 200 runs on the final day – with tension and nerves bound to play apart – seems certain to produce a thriller.
