Can Liverpool’s new director finally break the mould?

Following the January signings of Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez, Kenny Dalglish’s replacement of Roy Hodgson as interim manager and Liverpool’s superb recovery to sixth in the Premiership, it has been an eventful few months for new owners the Fenway Sports Group. Whilst previous owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett enjoyed a turbulent relationship with Liverpool fans, the Kop have been far more welcoming to John W Henry. However, having initially appointed ex-Tottenham Damien Comolli as Director of Football Strategy, he recently promoted him to Director of Football outright. And what a risk this could be to Henry’s relationship with the fans given the much-maligned nature of the role.

Several English clubs have adopted a more European approach to their management structures in recent years with the current vogue of appointing Directors of Football to handle certain aspects of scouting, recruitment, and non-team management. The role of the traditional football manager has therefore changed to accommodate these Directors. Instead of handling all transfer dealings, certain managers now find themselves free to focus more on first team management, training and selection. With their extensive network of scouting contacts and deep knowledge of both domestic and foreign leagues, certain Directors have been credited for bringing current stars to our attention. For example, it was Comolli that was credited in large part to the signings of Gareth Bale, Aaron Lennon and Tom Huddlestone at Tottenham. Similarly, Comollli’s predecessor at Spurs, Frank Arnesen, was credited with bringing John Obi Mikel and Salomon Kalou to Chelsea before his departure in February.

[ad_pod id=’unruly’ align=’right’]

However, for every successful Director there is a Dennis Wise. His ill-fated tenure at Newcastle ultimately contributed to the departure of fan’s favourite Kevin Keegan as manager. Having initially voiced concerns about the management structure of the club following the appointment of Wise, his fears were substantiated when James Milner was sold to Aston Villa against his will. And, the players Wise did sign, such as Spanish striker Xisco, were not only not wanted by Keegan but ultimately failed to live up to their billing.

Comolli also had his run-ins with previous Tottenham manager Martin Jol, whilst Jose Mourinho was regularly disgruntled by owner Roman Abramovich’s senior appointments. The Portuguese manager disagreed with the interference of both Arnesen and Avram Grant and was presented with players such as Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack who he didn’t want but was pressured into fielding.

Admittedly much of the work done by Directors of Football in scouting players is extremely beneficial and does ease much of the workload on today’s managers. But, it should always be remembered that it is the manager that runs the first team and directs selection policy. Therefore, surely it should be the manager who has the final say on transfer dealings?

One should hope current Liverpool manager Dalglish understands the remit of Director of Football having fulfilled a similar role at Blackburn Rovers and Celtic and is able to work with Comolli to his advantage. But in future club owners should be careful to appoint Directors and outline their exact responsibilities else risk undermining both future managers and fans as with the cases of both Keegan and Mourinho, it was the managers that fans sided with.

West Ham safety more important than award for Parker

West Ham midfielder Scott Parker insists his footballer of the year award will lose some of its lustre should the club be relegated this season. It was revealed on Friday that Parker, 30, was this season’s recipient of the Football Writers’ player of the year award, and he will receive the honour at a gala dinner at the Lancaster London Hotel on May 12.

But with West Ham sitting second from the bottom in the English Premier League, two points short of safety with five games to play, Parker said the award will count for little should his side drop to the Championship.

When asked if relegation would tarnish the award, Parker replied: “Yes, I suppose it will.”

“I stated recently the main focus this year is staying in the Premier League with West Ham, and, if we don’t do it after all the personal accolades, it will be very, very disappointing.”

“We have got a very good squad, some very good players, but for one reason or another we haven’t picked up the points we need.”

“If I could put my finger on it I’d be doing everything I can – whether it’s players underperforming, whatever. We need to try and pick up some results.”

Nevertheless, Parker said he was delighted to be recognised for his efforts this season, as he became the first West Ham player since Bobby Moore in 1964 to claim the prize.

“I’m absolutely delighted, it’s fantastic to get the award. When I got the phone call to say I’d won it I was speechless really,” he said.

“I feel like I have been playing some good stuff so I’m just glad that people appreciate what I’ve been doing.”

“I’m probably playing the best football of my career (because of) experience. I’ve stayed away from injuries, and I’m playing in the team regularly. You get a bit older, you learn a lot more. Things become a little more easier for you.”

Premier League preview: Blackburn v Manchester United

Manchester United can wrap up their 19th title in English top-flight football if they earn at least a draw at Blackburn on Saturday.Given Rovers’ form in the second half of the season, that task should be all too easy for Sir Alex Ferguson’s men, who took apart title challengers Chelsea 2-1 in their last start to all but sew up the English Premier League crown.

Steve Kean’s men have turned somewhat of a corner after an 11-match winless run, with a victory over Bolton and a draw away at West Ham, but their relegation plight is yet to be resolved as they sit just three points above drop zone inhabitants Blackpool.

The spotlight on Saturday, however, will be on United as they seek to seal a record-breaking 19th championship, to move clear of Liverpool’s tally of 18.

Ferguson has a plethora of options on the selection table, with just Owen Hargreaves (shoulder) occupying their injury list, and the Scottish boss will no doubt be wary of avoiding injuries in their last two league matches prior to the Champions League final later this month.

Rovers’ injury list consists of David Dunn (calf), Michel Salgado (knee), Ryan Nelsen (knee) and Vinnie Grella (Achilles), with Dunn and Salgado in the mix to return on Saturday.

Manchester United embarrassed Blackburn 7-1 at Old Trafford in November last year, with striker Dimitar Berbatov scoring five, and the Bulgarian might be in line for a recall if Ferguson wishes to rest either of his first-choice front men in Wayne Rooney or Javier Hernandez.

Berbatov has been pushed out of United’s starting 11 in the latter part of the season courtesy of Hernandez’s form, although ironically the 30-year-old leads the Premier League goal scoring charts on 21.

Anelka v Ivanovic v Luiz v Ferreira

Four Chelsea stars have fought an almighty battle against an army of giant Alien Invaders. But Blues fans need not worry too much, as their heroes were only taking part in a shoot for the latest 3D projection viral from 188BET.

188BET, the official betting partner of the London club, challenged David Luiz, Branislav Ivanovic, Paulo Ferreira and Nicolas Anelka to play Alien Invaders, a huge interactive video game beamed on to a 90-foot wall in a warehouse in Battersea, south-west London.

The players had to destroy the Alien Invaders by kicking footballs at the giant screen, with 50 points awarded for hitting a single alien and a bonus 188 points on offer for hitting the Alien Invaders ‘mothership’.

After some intense action, striker Anelka was the sharpest shooter with a score of 2088. The Frenchman’s exceptional accuracy was rewarded with a special 188BET Alien Invaders trophy and, more importantly, a donation by 188BET of £1,500 to charity of his choice.

This latest viral from the online gaming company follows on from their hugely popular video created to help promote London Wasps’ St George’s Day game that saw London Wasps players ‘slay’ a 50-foot dragon projected on to the side of Twickenham.

“It was a funny game, a good game to play and I hope one day I can have a garden big enough for this kind of game,” Anelka joked. “The four of us enjoyed it and we were trying to help each other out getting the footballs back but I am happy that I won. The trophy will now sit next to the Premier League medal and all my other trophies!”

Jeff Baker, Head of Marketing Services at 188BET, said: “188BET is always trying to think of new and innovative ways to activate its relationships with its partner clubs. For this video, we combined the latest in 3D projection technology with the skill of Premier League footballers, to create what we hope will be an original, fun and engaging video.”

Birmingham punished for a failure to expand

Birmingham City were condemned to relegation from the top flight yesterday after defeat to Spurs at White Hart Lane left them consigned to a season in the Championship next year. But for all their effort, Birmingham’s time in the Premier League was marred by dull, dreary football and most neutral fans won’t be sad to see the back of them.

The club’s failure to expand and build on last season’s heady 9th place finish is at the root of their downfall. Last season Birmingham built their platform on a string of strong defensive performances and a decent home record. It has to be said that they still struggled to score goals but the nucleus for a solid mid-table side in the years to come was there for all to see.

However, in the summer manager Alex McLeish found it difficult to bring in the players that he wanted and despite Birmingham still being difficult to break down, the lack of pace and penetration up top has cost them dearly this term.

Cameron Jerome has all the attributes to trouble a centre half – pace, power, strength – but he lacks composure in front of goal and the intelligence to exploit space when it’s granted to him and he‘s been without a league goal for a shocking 6 months. He finished last term with 10 league goals to his name, whereas this term a chronic lack of confidence in front of goal, a trait that you could assign to most of his beleaguered team mates, has seen him strike just 3 times in the league the whole campaign.

Beyond Jerome, the club’s attacking options are threadbare, which is the crux of the issue behind their relegation. Nikola Zigic sometimes leaves you wondering how he ever became a professional footballer. Baring his height, he offers very little. Jean Beausejour was a bright spark in Chile’s World Cup effort last summer but his form has been erratic. The likes of Alexander Hleb and Obafemi Martins have struggled with injuries and to adapt to Birmingham’s style of play. The less said about Matt Derbyshire and David Bentley, however, the better.

It would seem odd to criticise a manager that has led the club to a domestic trophy this season and with it European football next season, but the blame for the club’s relegation lies firmly at the feet of manager Alex McLeish.

The club have been beyond poor since their Carling Cup triumph over Arsenal back in February and they’ve scored just 37 league goals all season – the problems evident last season when the side put away just 38 league goals have not been rectified and the lack of development on the pitch and a regression to dour, outdated tactics has cost the club dear. A run of just 2 wins in 12 sucked them from mid-table obscurity into a relegation dogfight, one in which they’ve ultimately proved unsuccessful in staving off.

[ad_pod id=’unruly-2′ align=’right’]

You simply can’t expect to stay in the Premier League year after year averaging less than a goal a game. Granted, McLeish missed out on his preferred targets in the summer, but he had money to invest and he’s invested it poorly. Injuries haven’t helped a threadbare squad, but the inherent defensiveness of the manager is the root of the problem here. Under a different manager, Birmingham may have stayed up.

When sides around them threw caution to the wind in an attempt to stay up, Birmingham burnt out and became even more defensive, if that was at all possible. Their Premier League status was built upon the premise that they were difficult to beat, but this season they’ve been anything but.

They’ve been impotent in front of goal and the injury to Scott Dann back in January has proved to be more of a turning point in their campaign than previously anticipated. McLeish must shoulder the blame, for while Blackpool went down with a fight, Birmingham went down with a whimper. While it would be reckless to play extravagant football without the players necessary to do so, the sheer lack of ambition and attacking intent shown by them throughout the duration of the campaign has seen them deservedly punished with relegation.

Sevilla confirm Garcia Toral, Levante lose Garcia

The managerial shuffle in Spain continued on Tuesday as Marcelino Garcia Toral was appointed coach of Sevilla and Luis Garcia left Levante.Garcia Toral walked away from Racing Santander after a spat with owner Ahsan Ali Syed at the end of last season, a move that has yet to be confirmed by his former club.

Nevertheless, Sevilla have taken the opportunity to spruik their new manager in a press conference on Tuesday, welcoming the 45-year-old as the successor to Gregorio Manzano.

“I believe we have a coach for the long term. It’s the first time I have drawn up a contract like Marcelino’s,” club president Jose Maria del Nido said.

“He is signing for one season with an option for two more depending on results.”

Manzano was let go by the club at the conclusion of the last campaign, which saw Sevilla finish fifth on the table and miss out on a Champions League berth by four points.

Meanwhile, Luis Garcia has rescinded his contract after three seasons with Levante, freeing him up for a rumoured move to Getafe.

Garcia led Levante back to the top-flight for the first time in three years in 2009/10, and earned plaudits for keeping the club aloft in the most recent campaign.

Now, the 38-year-old has reportedly agreed to pay Levante one million euro so he can defect to Getafe, who sacked Michel after narrowly avoiding relegation.

“Luis Garcia, coach of Levante the past three seasons, has today cut his ties with our club,” said a statement on Levante’s website.

Getafe President Angel Torres told Spanish media: “We are going to offer him (Garcia) a three-year contract. He is a young coach with character and he done things very well at Levante.”

City reject Corinthians’ Tevez bid, claim reports

Manchester City have reportedly rejected a 35 million-pound bid from Brazilian side Corinthians for captain Carlos Tevez.Tevez, 27, has publicly stated his desire to leave City after five seasons in the English Premier League.

The striker claims to be unhappy away from his daughters, who live in Argentina.

Former club Corinthians emerged as a potential destination, but their initial bid has reportedly been rejected 24 hours after it was lodged as Corinthians president Andres Sanchez confirmed a proposal had been made.

“The player wants to come to South America, he doesn’t want to hear from European clubs. He wants to come here. Now it depends on Manchester City agreeing ,” Sanchez said.

“The proposal has been made.”

“I spoke with his representatives with Tevez over the telephone.”

“He is interested in coming back to South America.”

“Corinthians have made a different proposal than it is used to, but which is very common among many clubs.”

“We will commit 20 to 25 percent of our television rights in the next four years if Manchester City accepts the bid.”

Corinthians, one of Brazil’s most popular clubs, receive more than 45 million euros each year in TV rights.

City are believed to value their leading goalscorer last season at around 50 million pounds.

Any potential deal with Corinthians will need to be concluded quickly, with the Brazilian transfer window set to shut on July 20.

Real Madrid and Inter Milan have also been linked with moves for Tevez, who played for Corinthians between 2004 and 2006.

After arriving in England with West Ham in August 2006, Tevez joined Manchester United a year later before switching to local rivals City in July 2009.

Champions League qualifying wrap: Partizan, Wisla ease through

Partizan Belgrade and Wisla Krakow both eased into the third qualifying round of the Champions League on Tuesday.Vladimir Jovancic scored four minutes after coming off the bench as Partizan completed a comfortable 5-0 aggregate victory over Skendija 79, capped off with a 1-0 win in Macedonia.

Four goals up from the first leg in Serbia, Partizan looked off the pace at the start of the match in Skopje and were lucky not to fall behind when Jasir Selmani wasted an early chance.

But the Serbian champions were much improved after the interval and found a winner when Jovancic scored past Skendija goalkeeper Suat Zendeli in the 68th minute.

Partizan’s 5-0 aggregate victory means they will now face KRC Genk in the third round of qualifying.

Polish champions Wisla progressed to the third round following their 2-0 win over Lativan side Skonto Riga.

Leading 1-0 from the first leg in Latvia, Wisla went ahead thanks to a 51st minute goal from Patryk Malecki, before Ivica Iliev scored their second to wrap up the tie.

Wisla will now play Bulgarian champions Litex Lovech in the penultimate round of qualifying.

Litex beat Montenegrin side FK Mogren 3-0 on Wednesday for a 5-1 aggregate victory.

In other notable second-round results, HJK Helsinki crushed Welsh outfit Bangor City 10-0 in their second leg in Finland to secure a 13-0 aggregate victory.

The Finnish side scored eight goals in the second half, with Erfan Zeneli, Teemu Pukki and Kartriot Kastrati all netting twice for the hosts.

Belarusian outfit BATE Borisov also moved into the third round after a 2-0 win over Northern Ireland’s Linfield.

The tie was evenly poised at 1-1 after the first leg in Belfast, but goals from Pavel Nekhaichik and Aleksandr Pavlov in the space of three second-half minutes on Tuesday ensured victory for the hosts.

Other teams through to the second round include Shamrock Rovers, Ekranas, Dinamo Zagreb, Slovan Bratislava, Malmo and Viktoria Plzen.

Does Arsene’s transfer plans show a lack of priorities?

On July 16th 2011 Arsenal completed the signing of the Ivorian winger and forward Gervinho from French club Lille . Considered a positive attacking transfer for the club, the new attacking player has already made a great impression during some of Arsenal’s pre-season friendly matches.

Also, linked with the Gunners over the past couple of weeks has been the young Spanish winger Juan Mata . Arsene Wenger was reported to be willing to break the club’s transfer record with an £18 million bid for the Valencia midfielder.

Whether Arsenal are successful on this transfer or not (some outlets are now reporting that the transfer is on the verge of collapse) this move for Mata, plus the club’s signing of Gervinho, shows where Arsene Wenger’s priorities lie in terms of what types of players he is looking to sign before the start of the 2011-2012 Premier League season.

Although Arsenal have signed one defender during this transfer window and seem to be closing in on another, Wenger’s recent moves for Gervinho and Mata have shown that the Frenchman is only really interested in getting the cheque book out for attack minded players. For a moment it looked like Wenger may have learnt from the mistakes Arsenal made at the tail end of last season and was looking to strengthen his defence for the next one. His move for central defender Phil Jagielka was a positive one but although there have been rumours of links to other defenders such as Gary Cahill and Chris Samba, nothing has yet come to fruition.

Whilst I expect that Arsenal will probably ultimately secure the services of the current Everton defender Jagielka, the fact that Wenger’s only other defensive signing so far this summer is the 19 year old Carl Jenkinson from Charlton may alarm Gunners’ fans. You see, although it is admirable that Wenger is buying young players like Jenkinson for the future, it does not fix the biggest issue that Arsenal have at the moment. If Arsenal want to challenge for honours next season they need to sort out the issues of their back four and their goalkeeper, and sort them out fast.

[ad_pod id=’unruly-2′ align=’right’]

The fact is that Arsenal plays some of the most attractive attacking football in the world, perhaps second only to Barcelona as the best team to watch because of the beautiful way they move the ball around the field. Nevertheless, the reason that Barcelona are able to play football in this way and not concede many goals is because they have a solid back four and a safe pair of hands between the posts. Arsenal, I am sorry to say, do not have this and they need to rectify that sharpish.

This is not to say that Gervinho is not a fantastic signing, because he is. Mata too would fit into Arsenal’s style of play magnificently, as would other midfielders such as Phil Jarvis , who the Gunners have also been linked with. However, Cesc Fabregas , Samir Nasri and Andrei Arshavin are still at the club despite all of them looking unsettled. The best way to convince them to stick around at the Emirates Stadium is surely not to buy competition for their places but to purchase players who will stop the club haemorrhaging goals whenever these men are doing what they do best at the other end of the field?

For example, why Arsenal have not made a move for out of favour Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given is beyond me. Thomas Vermaelen meanwhile is a great centre back, but his absence for a good chunk of last season due to injury showed that Arsenal are incredibly vulnerable at the back without him.

If the Gunners do sign Phil Jagielka over the next few days then that is a great start but there is so much more work to do. In my opinion, Wenger needs to forget about buying new attacking players. Strengthen the back four, buy an experienced goalkeeper and convince Fabregas, Nasri and Arshavin to stay at the club. If Arsene Wenger can do those three things then who’s to say that Arsenal won’t be ready to taste Premier League glory once again next season?
