Leeds United’s loan of Jack Clarke is beginning to feel rather pointless

[ad_pod ]

As Patrick Bamford popped up with two of the easiest goals he’ll score in his career against Wigan last month, a player still trying to make his name in the game was nowhere to be seen.

That individual was Jack Clarke, a young performer who has taken an opposite career path to the 25-year-old.

Bamford played much of his youth football at Premier League Chelsea before dropping down the leagues to the likes of Middlesbrough and now Leeds.

Clarke, however, started in the second division and has now worked his way onto top-flight Tottenham at an older age.

But despite now being Spurs’ property, concerns may lie southward regarding his lack of action in the 2019/20 season.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men snapped up the 18-year-old for a fee of £10m this summer, a considerable price for someone who only started four Championship games last season.

And indeed, he is yet to start a league game in this campaign.

He has, however, started two Carabao Cup outings versus Salford and Stoke City, though he was hauled off for Jack Harrison at half-time after failing to make his mark against the Potters.

The fact he failed to inspire in either cup match rather sums up what Clarke is to Leeds at this stage.

Marcelo Bielsa hasn’t named the teenager on the bench for any of Leeds’ last four Premier League fixtures, and that’s perhaps a damning indictment of what the Argentine thinks about him.

But there is an awkward aspect to the situation that is clearly influencing the selection policy. The teenager has become a victim of only being able to include five loan players in a matchday squad, something that could halt his progress this term.

The majority of Leeds’ transfer business in the summer was of a temporary nature, as they welcomed Ben White, Helder Costa, Jack Harrison, Illan Meslier and Eddie Nketiah through the doors of Elland Road on loan deals.

Harrison, in particular, has made a big impact since returning from Manchester City, scoring on the opening weekend and playing nine key passes in his first six appearances.

And his form has been key in keeping Costa out of the side, a player who has a fine record in the Championship, scoring 15 goals across two terms.

If the Portuguese is struggling to get in the side, Clarke doesn’t really stand a chance.

Whether or not Leeds wanted the player back on loan after selling him, they’ve now been lumped with what feels like a rather pointless individual.

The academy man is a winger by trade and that makes it all the more tricky to see where he fits in this season.

That’s the one area of the pitch the Whites have players in abundance. Pablo Hernandez and Harrison have already scored whilst Costa has looked threatening in sporadic bursts, most notable against Salford when he created two goals and also against Brentford when he burst free of the defence and set the ball on a silver platter for Eddie Nketiah to notch a late winner.

Clarke’s solitary outing this term was out of position per Wyscout, and he also failed to muster much end product.

The youngster played at right-wing back in the League Cup clash against Salford, a position unfamiliar to him, yet it paints a concerning picture of what could be about to come for Clarke in 2019/20.

Playing in that position is unlikely to help and the fact he only registered four touches in the opposition’s penalty area says a lot.

Throughout the time he was on the field he created just one chance. That’s akin to the 0.4 accurate crosses he played per 90 minutes in the Championship last season, according to WhoScored.

If Clarke is to push for a first-team place, then creating more has to be at the top of his agenda.

Thogden ranks all 24 Championship home kits in the video below…

After all, Hernandez laid on 12 assists last season whilst Costa has 14 across the two he spent in the league with Wolves.

On that evidence, Clarke will again struggle for minutes this season and after being left out of four match day squads there’s no doubt the immediate future looks bleak.

For both parties, Spurs and Leeds, this has been an awkward waste of everyone’s time.

After all, why would Bielsa hand opportunities to someone like Clarke when they know they’re losing him permanently? The Leeds manager has handed matchday experience to Mateusz Bogusz this season whilst Jamie Shackleton continues to be trusted.

Another teenager in Alfie McCalmont has also been handed a chance.

Yet, when it comes to league action, there is a distinct lack of Clarke in the side.

The heroic golden boy of last season has suddenly morphed into a disposable and alarmingly peripheral figure.

Nottingham Forest’s Carl Jenkinson could have his work cut out on Saturday

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Nottingham Forest head back into domestic action this weekend as they face a trip to the Liberty Stadium to face league leaders Swansea City.

Sabri Lamouchi’s side are 11th in the Championship table having gone unbeaten ever since their opening day defeat to West Brom.

They’ve recorded some impressive results in that time, including a win at Craven Cottage against Fulham, who currently occupy a playoff spot.

There is no doubt that this fixture presents their toughest challenge yet as the Swans are unbeaten and have scored more goals than any other team in the league.

On the Chalkboard

One of their key danger men is Bersant Celina, formerly of Manchester City, after featuring in all six of their Championship games, scoring two goals and an average rating of 7.11 which is amongst the top four of Swansea players who have played a similar amount.

Forest’s defence will have to be on their game if they want to get a result from this match because of Celina’s influence.

He is averaging 2.3 shots per game, on top of 2.2 key passes and 1.7 dribbles – this shows how involved he is all over the pitch.

The 23-year-old is not only a goal threat but also contributes to the passing game. Celina also averages 0.8 crosses per game.

His opposite number this weekend is likely to be Carl Jenkinson at right-back, and he’ll need to improve in order to help contribute towards a clean sheet.

Watch Nottingham Forest Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The former Arsenal man has only recorded an average of 0.3 interceptions per game while racking up 2.3 fouls per game, which will work in Celina’s favour having been fouled 0.8 times per match.

Swansea’s left-winger will also get the better of Jenkinson a lot with him being dribbled past at least once per game, so he could have his work cut out.

This battle out wide could well be the defining factor on whether the Reds have a successful trip over in Wales on Saturday.

Loads of Rangers fans demand Tavernier is taken off penalties

[ad_pod ]

Rangers secured a stunning home win against Feyenoord in the Europa League on Thursday evening but it could’ve been more comfortable had captain James Tavernier scored his penalty in the 9th minute.

His manager, Steven Gerrard, defended him after the 1-0 victory, saying there will be “no finger-pointing” in his post-match press conference, via The Sun.

Tavernier, who was borderline metronomic from the spot last season, scoring 12 out of 14, has now missed two penalties from two attempts this season against Progres Niederkorn and Feyenoord.

Despite a dip in goal scoring form, the Rangers skipper has still managed to accumulate five assists and one goal – showing his creative influence is still vital to the Ibrox club.

Nevertheless, fans are keen for him to be removed from penalty-taking duties for future fixtures. Indeed, both Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe are seemingly waiting in the wings, ready to take on the responsibility.

Take a look at the best of the reaction below!

Barnsley: Dimitri Cavare could be back for Derby clash next week

Barnsley defender Dimitri Cavare is set to miss Sunday’s clash against Brentford but could return for next week’s meeting with Derby.

[ad_pod ]

The Star reported that the 24-year-old is nearing a return from the hamstring injury he picked up in the recent defeat to Leeds, with Barnsley manager Daniel Stendel believing he could be back for next Wednesday’s home clash against Derby.

Stendel told The Star: “He had an injury in the Leeds game. He tried to play until the end, but he had a muscle injury in the hamstring. We hope he can play against Derby maybe but we are not sure.”

Guadeloupe international Cavare has had a frustrating, stop-start beginning to the 2019/20 season for Barnsley.

Having played for the entirety of their first two Championship games of the campaign, he then missed their next four matches in all competitions before being brought back into the team against Wigan at the end of August. [via TransferMarkt.co.uk]

He kept his place for the 0-2 defeat to Leeds, during which he had a hamstring injury, and consequently was sidelined for last weekend’s defeat at Nottingham Forest. [via TransferMarkt.co.uk]

Barnsley have only kept two clean sheets this season, both with Cavare in the side, while the Reds have conceded four goals in as many games with him in their defence (one per game). In the five matches that he has missed, Stendel’s team have let in 11 goals, an average of 2.2 goals per game. [via TransferMarkt.co.uk]

Cavare has shown that he can adapt to either full-back position, although he has been the preferred option in neither, with Ben Williams starting four games from left-back to Cavare’s two and Toby Sibbick starting at right-back in all but one Championship game this season.

While the Guadeloupe defender is quite versatile, he has trailed his fellow full-backs for some key metrics this season. His tackling average of 1.8 per game is lower than both Sibbick (3.6) and Williams (2.5), while the former also has a higher passing accuracy of 72.5% to Cavare’s 66.7%. [via WhoScored.com]

However, Cavare has recorded more interceptions (1.8) and dribbles (1.5) per game than Sibbick (1.1 interceptions, 1.4 dribbles) and Williams (1.3 interceptions, 0.8 dribbles), while his passing accuracy is much better than Williams’ 56.9%. [via WhoScored.com]

Cavare’s inferior tackling and passing statistics when compared to Sibbick indicate why Stendel has gone with the latter as his preferred right-back option this season.

However, with the 24-year-old outperforming Williams for interceptions and passing accuracy, as well as demonstrating in recent weeks that he can play at left-back, maybe Stendel should restore Cavare to that position for the Derby game if he is fit by then.

With Barnsley conceding far fewer goals with Cavare in the team than without, the Guadeloupe man deserves a more sustained run in the side once he has returned from injury.

Barnsley fans, do you think Cavare should be in the starting XI more regularly? If so, in what position would you like to see him playing? Join in the discussion by commenting below!

Leeds youngster Olly Casey handed massive boost by Marcelo Bielsa

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

Pascal Struijk has been one of the names mentioned that could play in place of Liam Cooper while the skipper sits out with an injury problem.

The 20-year-old Dutchman has seemingly risen up the pecking order at Leeds but he isn’t the only one competing for a place in the defence.

Cooper’s replacement on Tuesday, Gaetano Berardi, will also be in the frame but there could be a route back into the side in that role for Luke Ayling.

The three aforementioned names all make sense in one way or another. Berardi offered a cause for hope among some bad news on Tuesday while Ayling has played in that role before.

However, a surprise name was among those muttered by Marcelo Bielsa in his pre-match press conference on Thursday ahead of their clash with Millwall.

That happened to be teenager Olly Casey, one of the defenders who has been featuring for Carlos Corberan’s U23 side in 2019/20.

A centre-back by trade, he’s clearly been impressing if Bielsa sees him as someone that could challenge for a spot in the very immediate future.

Another defender in Charlie Cresswell has recently signed a new deal and is someone we think could go onto have a big role to play in the team, but it appears as though Casey is slightly ahead of him in terms of development.

At 18, he is still incredibly young and it would be quite the statement to throw him in but it bodes well for the youngster regardless. This is certainly a huge boost for someone who won the Apprentice of the Year award at Leeds last term.

On those who could come in, Bielsa noted: “Casey and Struijk are younger. Davis has played with us. Phillips is an option in this sector. Of course, Berardi is the direct substitution.”

Before this comment was made, Casey didn’t even have a squad number with the senior side so it’s rather come out of nowhere, even if he did play for the first team in pre-season.

Why are Leeds fans the best in the country? Find out in the video below…

It remains to be seen who replaces the Scot but this isn’t the first time the aforementioned teen, who doesn’t turn 19 until later this month, has been on the end of rather surprising news.

In November 2018 he was handed professional terms, something that left him shocked.

He said at the time: “I still watch the first team games every week, I love it, my dad has been bringing me to games since I was young. When I first found out about getting a pro deal I was shocked as you usually find out a bit later in the year.”

Being a fan of the club, Casey must be ecstatic that he’s simply been muttered in the same breath as someone like Kalvin Phillips.

It’s now time for him to build on that and start making Bielsa think very strongly about whether to include him in the first XI.

Aston Villa boss Dean Smith isn’t worried despite being in the bottom three

Despite spending over £100m this summer, Aston Villa sit in the relegation zone after seven Premier League games.

Usually, that would set alarm bells ringing at the club, but the Midlands outfit seem to be rather relaxed about their current situation.

Watch Aston Villa Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Indeed, Dean Smith spoke to the club’s YouTube channel ahead of their game against Brighton this weekend, and he explained exactly why he isn’t worried about Villa’s current predicament.

“We’ve taken the lead in four games this season, there are a lot of teams in this league that can’t take the lead, and because of the qualities we have at the moment we’re giving teams a run for their money. The only thing that’s missing at the moment is that killer second goal that will kill a team off.”

The manager is spot on with his summary as well. The Villans can count themselves rather unlucky not to have won at least one of their last two fixtures.

They drew with Burnley despite going ahead twice, and they also threw away a lead against a ten-man Arsenal side not once but twice.

If they continue to perform like this it shouldn’t be long until they start picking up points and distancing themselves from the bottom three, and a game this weekend against a Norwich side that have lost four of their last five league games represents a great chance to get a win.
