Leeds United have been linked with Callum O’Dowda quite often this summer, and a recent report has stated that he has his heart set on a move to Elland Road in the upcoming transfer window.

This article from Football League World has coincided with the Championship fixture list being released. The opening day of the season sees the Whites travel to Bristol City, a game where O’Dowda could be the difference-maker.

O’Dowda’s history

After being frozen out of the squad according to The Times (subscription required) and rejecting three contract offers it is fair to say that the 24-year-old isn’t leaving Ashton Gate on the best of terms.

If he does join Leeds there would be no better way to get one over his former employers than beating them on his debut.

This extra incentive to win could see the Irishman have an extra spring in his step which could, of course, help his new side on their way to victory.

No need for spying

As we saw last season with spygate, Marcelo Bielsa loves to know everything about his upcoming opponents, and if O’Dowda was signed he could play the role of a spy ahead of this game.

The Irishman will know all of Lee Johnson’s tactics and tricks as he has played under the Bristol City boss for the past three years, and the information that he could relay to Bielsa and his coaching staff could prove invaluable.

This would allow the Argentine the slight advantage he used to get from watching other teams training sessions without breaking the new EFL rule that has been put in place to stop a repeat of the infamous incident between Leeds and Derby.

If there’s one club that can benefit from a slew of new defensive signings this summer, it’s Arsenal.

The Gunners capitulated in the final few games of the Premier League season, throwing away a top-four finish thanks to lacklustre defending while also losing the Europa League final in embarrassing style at the hands of Chelsea.

This summer the club need to maximise their limited £45 million budget by signing players in the positions that are most in need of strengthening.

With Nacho Monreal entering the final year of his contract and Sead Kolasinac well-suited to a more advanced role, it would be no surprise to see Arsenal sign a new left-back this summer, and their publicised pursuit of Kieran Tierney suggests they are looking in exactly the right place for a new left-back this summer.

According to Metro, Arsenal look set to fail with a second bid for the Celtic star, with the Scottish champions holding out for a fee of £25m.

That the Gunners have reportedly tabled a second bid illuminates the extent of their interest in bringing Tierney to the Emirates Stadium and, with that in mind, Football FanCast take a look at two reasons why his signature should be a priority this summer.

Tierney might just be 22-years-old but he is blessed with a wealth of experience, making 170 first-team appearances for Celtic thus far.

He has put in stellar displays in the Champions League and led out the Hoops as captain, and history strongly suggests that he has earned a major step up in class.

Many are quick to dismiss  the quality of the Scottish Premiership, but playing 150+ games in a top-tier division before the age of 23 is no mean feat. His level of experience should ensure a smooth transition into the Premier League and Arsenal’s first-team. Virgil van Dijk and Victor Wanyama have both made the transition from Celtic to Premier League football with huge success, so why can’t Tierney?

The Scotland international’s ability to play as a left-back, a central defender and as a left-wing-back means the Scottish international will be able to fit in either a 4-2-3-1 or 3-5-2 – the two formations Emery predominantly used in his first season with Arsenal.

Tierney can hold the position for years

With Sead Kolasinac being linked with a move away from the Emirates, per the Sun, and Nacho Monreal now 33-years-old and coming off the back of a relatively disappointing season at Arsenal, Tierney could be in prime position to establish himself as the first choice left-back, and it’s one that the Scotsman can hold down for years.

He is a young and exuberant talent with plenty of scope for progression, and in the absence of stark competition next season he could convince Emery of his long term credentials.

With a reported valuation of £25m standing in Arsenal’s way, signing Tierney will take up more than half of Arsenal’s reported £40m transfer budget, but it would be a risk well worth taking based on the promise he has showcased during his formative years.

Present circumstances appear to lend Tierney a dream opportunity to establish himself as a lynchpin in Arsenal’s defensive unit if he eventually moves to the English capital this summer.

After a dismal campaign saw that them ship 54 goals in the Premier League, Manchester United are rather understandably searching far and wide for some defensive reinforcements.

The club have been linked with a big-money for Leicester centre-back Harry Maguire but reports have suggested that the two clubs still remain apart on their respective valuations of the defender.

Now, according to Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, United have enquired about Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti who has found himself out-of-favour at the Camp Nou due to a mixture of injury problems and the emergence of fellow Frenchman Clement Lenglet.

After hearing about the links to their latest transfer target, fans of the Manchester side took to Twitter to voice their opinion and many were a little wary about signing the 25-year-old.

They felt the France international’s questionable record with injuries was something the side could do without considering the club already has Eric Bailly on their books.

Some felt Umtiti – valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt – was even “over-rated” and felt there were far better options out there that United could pursue like Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly or Benfica’s Ruben Dias.

Manchester United have a clear strategy this summer.

Both chief executive Ed Woodward and manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are reported to have settled on chasing the best young British talent they can acquire.

They have already signed Daniel James from Swansea City, an exciting, pacey winger who fits into the club’s ethos of buying direct, attacking players.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka has moved from Crystal Palace for a fee of £50m. The deal makes him the most expensive specialist right-back in history.

Now, of course, there has been much mirth surrounding this. Rival fans have pointed out the inflated fees and the lack of stardust among the targets. Sean Longstaff at Newcastle United is said to have impressed Solskjaer, as one example.

Harry Maguire, at Leicester City, too, has reportedly been the subject of a £60m bid. However, an acceptable fee could be close to the £100m mark.

The fees are eye-watering, yes, but why exactly are United being pilloried for returning to a strategy that has worked out so well for them before?

Think of the best United teams under Sir Alex Ferguson. The 1999 treble-winning team had 10 British players in the squad when they defeated Bayern Munich in Barcelona: Gary Neville, David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs, Andy Cole, David May, Phil Neville, Wes Brown, Jonathan Greening and Teddy Sheringham. Paul Scholes was suspended.

The squad that won the 2008 Champions League final had eight: Wes Brown, Rio Ferdinand, Owen Hargreaves, Scholes, Michael Carrick, Wayne Rooney, Giggs and Darren Fletcher.

They have always prized a British core, a group of players who truly understand the Premier League and require little adjustment.

They have the stars there already, the likes of Paul Pogba, Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are all either already world-class or are well on their way.

Sprinkling in some of the best homegrown talent cannot be a bad thing and it should not be mocked. Longstaff could become an excellent midfield player if he is coached properly and if he is given the opportunity to learn from Pogba in the centre of the pitch.

Of course, one feels that United are being forced to shop in a market that they would rather avoid.

They did not qualify for the Champions League so hypothetical moves for any of England’s top talents – the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Jadon Sancho – are unlikely to bear any fruit whatsoever.

But they are still going about this summer in admirable fashion, sticking to their guns and attempting to deliver on what Solskjaer is trying to build.

It does need saying, obviously, that Longstaff would not be able to replace Pogba and there would likely have to be serious investment if the Frenchman decided to move to Real Madrid this summer. Lukaku, too, has been linked with Serie A. If he goes, United would also need a new striker.

But as it is, they are taking the right steps as they attempt to once again qualify for the Champions League and take their place at European football’s top table.

They should not be mocked; they should be applauded for placing their faith in the production lines in this country.

Aston Villa’s summer has got off to a pretty convincing start. Having signed Wesley from Club Brugge for a fee of £22m they’ve shown they’re not afraid to spend big this summer.

The Brazilian is still largely an unknown quantity at the highest level having played the majority of his career in Belgium to date, scoring 17 times in all competitions last season.

Having added Anwar El Ghazi to their ranks on a permanent basis and also bringing Jota to the club, improving in attacking areas seems to be a huge priority.

And with the club also pursuing Egyptian winger, Trezeguet, there is yet more evidence.

Last week, The Sun reported that they were ready to pay £8m for the 24-year-old but the BBC have since claimed that’s risen to £10m.

They reported that Dean Smith and Jesus Garcia Pitarch have been in Cairo to see him during the Africa Cup of Nations as they eye up a deal.

In the Turkish Super Lig last term, he was in phenomenal form, scoring nine times whilst also picking up the same number of assists.

Trezeguet is a potent goal threat and regularly finds himself in positions from which to shoot from, averaging four shots a game for Kasimpasa in 2018/19.

It’s an area, therefore, that he could prove devastating in if the club sign him this summer.

Of course the Turkish league is far below the standard of the Premier League but it’s still a particularly impressive return.

In one game last season, he had an incredible ten shots per game whilst he had a further seven in two matches.

Considering the number of shots he does have per game he ought to be scoring more goals but the positives are that he’s getting into shooting positions in the first place.

His tally of four per game amounts to more than anyone in the Villa side last season from their promotion-winning Championship campaign.

Tammy Abraham had 2.9 per outing whilst John McGinn sat second on 2.5. Therefore, there is a considerable difference between Trezeguet and those who were playing for the Midlands outfit last season.

The Egyptian played on the left flank for his club last term, an area where Anwar El Ghazi averaged just 1.9 shots per game in comparison.

If he arrives this summer, the Dutchman could well find him a direct competitor for a place in the side.
