Cardiff City’s failure to pick up a point against already-relegated Fulham on Saturday means it is now solely between them and Brighton and Hove Albion to see who will join the Cottagers and Huddersfield Town in the Championship next season.

The Seagulls’ draw against Newcastle United at the Amex could prove to be a crucial point given it has left them with a four-point advantage over the Bluebirds with two games remaining – including a trip to Old Trafford on the final day.

Before that, Neil Warnock’s side come up against Albion’s arch-rivals Crystal Palace in the Welsh capital at the weekend, with some Eagles fans probably secretly hoping that their team slips up to keep the south coast outfit in the mire.

Brighton supporters on the North Stand Chat forum have been debating what they would do if the roles were reversed and they were in Palace’s shoes.

It certainly is and has clearly divided opinion among the fan-base.

While some would be happy for their side to roll over and gift their opposition the three points, others would expect their players to be professional and play to get a result.

With money, bonuses and records on the line, rivalries are often put to one side in the modern era and it would be no surprise if Palace put in another excellent display on the road, saving one of their biggest enemies as a result.

Former Chelsea star Pat Nevin cannot believe that his old side have leapfrogged Tottenham Hotspur in the race to finish in the top-four, per the Blues’ official website.

What’s he said?

Chelsea beat Watford 3-0 at the weekend to secure qualification to the Champions League in 2019-20.

Spurs, meanwhile, lost to AFC Bournemouth on Saturday, while Arsenal dropped points against Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday.

The two results mean that, unless Arsenal beat Burnley and Spurs lose to Everton with an eight-goal swing involved, Mauricio Pochettino’s men will join the Blues in the competition next term.

But Nevin has been amazed that his former side have been able to sneak in ahead of Spurs and is astonished that they could still finish above them this season.

Using his column on the Chelsea website to take a swipe at their London rivals, he said: “Before going to the Chelsea v Watford game I was down on the south coast for the Bournemouth v Spurs match. Once more Spurs managed to implode when the pressure got to them but it was also clear they were jaded. Before the game, I noted that they had won only three in their last 10 league games, but it was more than that, they lacked a team spark in that first half.

“With Champions League football for next season in the balance, I was amazed at how sluggish they looked in that first 45. With a little further consideration it became apparent that just too many of their players were running on empty.

“They have a limited squad in terms of depth, their Champions League run has stressed them too far and in the season after a World Cup, it was all just too much to overcome. They didn’t manage to or weren’t able to, rotate their squad enough, especially the most vital players. That’s why they have only picked up 10 points from the last 33.”

Ignores key injury woes

Nevin clearly has his Chelsea glasses on but he is ignoring perhaps the key reason for Spurs’ woes: injuries.

The main reason Pochettino has been unable to rotate his squad is that so much of it has been in the treatment room.

The likes of Harry Kane, Harry Winks, Dele Alli, Serge Aurier, Eric Dier, Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko have all been injured at one point or another in 2018-19, while Son Heung-Min had to leave the club behind to represent South Korea in the middle of the campaign.

That they are in the top four at all, then, is nothing short of a miracle.

Nevin said that he noted the club’s results across the past 10 games; he clearly didn’t pay any attention to their injury list.

Speaking to the South London Press, Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Danny Higginbotham has helped highlight the key Lee Bowyer decision that could decide Charlton Athletic’s play-off tie against Doncaster Rovers on Friday night.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Addicks go into the second leg of the semi-final clash at The Valley with a narrow aggregate lead following their 2-1 win in Yorkshire last weekend.

The south London outfit used a system deploying wing-backs to great effect at the Keepmoat Stadium, and it was something that clearly didn’t go unnoticed by Higginbotham.

He told the South London Press: “The wing-backs were excellent.”

Higginbotham is right too as Ben Purrington and Anfernee Dijksteel were both outstanding against Grant McCann’s men.

The fact that the formation worked so well against Rovers may well have provided manager Bowyer with quite the conundrum ahead of the big clash on Friday.

Vital decision

While the wing-back system worked so well against Doncaster on Saturday, Bowyer would have good reason to switch things up for the second leg.

Charlton have enjoyed great success using a 4-4-2 diamond formation on their own patch in League One this term, with it helping them pick up 53 points from a possible 69 available at The Valley.

Bowyer must make up his mind whether to go with the system that served him so well at Doncaster or revert back to his old faithful on Friday.

It is easily a decision that could decide the tie given the game is still firmly on a knife-edge, and the 42-year-old needs to make the correct call.

According to The Sun, Everton are plotting a £35m bid for Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson, and it could be the club’s most intelligent big-money transfer yet.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Sun report that Toffees manager Marco Silva is convinced that his team is only one goalscorer short of potentially breaking into the top six in the Premier League, and he has identified the Cherries attacker as the man to help them do it.

The Sun says that the south coast outfit could be tempted by a huge bid given the centre-forward only cost them £3m and has suffered cruciate injuries in both knees.

That doesn’t appear to have put the Portuguese boss and Marcel Brands off, although the influential director of football may have to move players on before he can launch the move for Wilson.

Smart addition

Despite the fact some may have fears over his fitness because of previous injury issues, the 27-year-old showed towards the end of the top flight campaign how good he can be.

Three goals and three assists in Eddie Howe’s men’s final five fixtures showed his prowess both in terms of finding the net and setting others up to do so.

33 goals in 91 Premier League outings is no mean feat considering he has been plying his trade for a bottom-half team, and shows the potential he has to make a difference for a bigger English club.

Everton have splashed the cash on experienced players at this level previously with the likes of Theo Walcott, Michael Keane and Gylfi Sigurdsson, but they have tended to look abroad when it has come to finding a new number nine – see Sandro Ramirez and Cenk Tosun.

Spending big money on a striker like Wilson who knows the Premier League could make the difference for Everton next term, as they finally look to challenge the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal.

وأتم تصريحاته: “قدم كين مستوى رائعًا أمام مانشستر سيتي ولا أتذكر أنه كان قريبًا من هذا الأداء إلا قبل بضع سنوات أمام ليفربول في ملعب ويمبلي، ولكن بالأمس كان مذهلًا”.

Manchester United fans on Twitter have been left confused by reports linking the club to want-away Atletico Madrid star Antione Griezmann as an alternative to Jadon Sancho.

United had been strongly linked to the Borussia Dortmund attacker in the build-up to the summer transfer window, but a lack of Champions League football and Sancho’s mammoth price tag could scupper any deal at this time.

Instead, according to The Mirror, United are now targetting Griezmann who has already declared his desire to leave the Wanda Metropolitano this summer.

A move to Barcelona was anticipated for the French World Cup winner, but the Catalan club appear to be wavering on a move, leaving Griezmann available for interested parties with deep pockets.

The 28-year old Atletico forward scored 15 goals and added eight assists in La Liga this season, but did so playing as a striker or just behind the striker, whereas Sancho notched 12 goals and 17 assists in the Bundesliga from a traditional right-wing role.

Despite Griezmann’s clear quality, many United fans are sceptical of reports linking him as an alternative option to Sancho due to the not so subtle differences between the two players.
