Sheffield Wednesday fans are right to rave about Barry Bannan

Sheffield Wednesday are back on track after a string of impressive results.

In the FA Cup two weeks ago, a much-altered Owls side defeated Premier League outfit, Brighton, to advance into the fourth round before coming out on top in the Yorkshire derby, beating Leeds United 2-0 on their own patch.

Their performances has got a lot of people talking at Hillsborough with midfielder Barry Bannan taking all of the acclaim.

First, there was footage of his game-winning assist published on Twitter, to which several supporters replied…

And then there was a tweet highlighting his impressive statistic from the very same game. According to Between the Lines, no player in the Championship recorded more key passes (five) over the weekend.

This has led to further praise being launched at the 30-year-old midfielder.

Bannan was described as a ‘wizard’ as well as being ‘superhuman’ by some fans while one said his pass for the winner was the best he’s ever seen in over 60 years of watching the club.

The Owls social media team had to get in on the act too, uploading a Tweet of their own praising the playmaker…

There’s still a month until Valentine’s Day, but you wouldn’t have realised due to the love-in surrounding Bannan and his latest showing for Wednesday.

Fans have been going crazy since the weekend, so much so that he was labelled ‘the GOAT’ by one member of the Hillsborough faithful.

And they all have every right to talk him up as he’s quickly becoming one of the club’s most important players. He’ll need to be the one that steps up in the absence of Steven Fletcher.

Whose Line Is It Anyway: Michael Owen, Garth Crooks or Mark Lawrenson?

Per WhoScored, no player in the Wednesday squad has provided more assists this campaign (seven) while he records double the number of key passes per game (2.6) than the next best, Adam Reach. (1.3).

The 30-year-old also averages over 50 passes per match, which is 12 more than any other midfielder in the squad, only going to prove that he’s the focal point to the Owls’ success.

If he plays well and dominates the middle, Wednesday often come out on top as Saturday’s derby win showed.

And in other news, Garry Monk has given a clue into his plans for the January transfer window…

Charlton’s predicted XI to face Fulham

Charlton Athletic will be looking to bounce back from their 2-1 loss against Preston North End when they step onto the pitch on Wednesday.

However, doing so won’t be the easiest of tasks, as they will face Fulham, who have gone into this round of fixtures in third place.

If the Addicks are unable to get the three points, it will mark five consecutive matches without a win, while a bit of extra distance from the relegation zone would likely be appreciated.

FFC has predicted the starting XI that Bowyer could utilise in order to make that happen, including three changes from the loss at Deepdale.

The defence’s main core is kept intact, with Dillon Phillips, Tom Lockyer, Adedeji Oshilaja and Naby Sarr all starting against Fulham, as they did during the loss to Preston.

Alfie Doughty could start this match on the bench, with Ben Purrington coming into the team. Bringing in the 23-year-old could provide the side with extra defensive solidity. He averages 1.5 tackles, 1.1 interceptions and 1.9 clearances per game, which outdoes the 20-year-old’s 0.6 tackles and 0.5 clearances while equalling his interceptions. Adam Matthews, meanwhile, could play on the opposite flank.

Can you remember how much each of these transfer icons cost? Only experts will get 100% on our quiz…

Ben Dempsey seems to have forced his way into Bowyer’s plans in recent times, after starting each of Charlton’s last three league games, and could be set to continue that run against Fulham.

In this XI, Darren Pratley remains in the team, while Albie Morgan replaces Jonny Williams to join them in the midfield three, which would see the academy graduate return to the starting lineup having not featured in it for the last two games.

Andre Green stays in the side after scoring against Preston, a moment that could prove to be monumental for him – especially given the timing.

Tomer Hemed has come on as a substitute in each of Charlton’s last three games, so Bowyer may be tempted to start the Israel international, with Josh Davison being used from the bench.

Meanwhile, Charlton fans reacted to a big moment in the game against Preston.

One winner and one loser if Aston Villa sign Daniel Sturridge

Fanatik (via Sport Witness) claim that Aston Villa are interested in signing Trabzonspor striker Daniel Sturridge and have offered €5m (£4.2m) to land their target.

The former Liverpool striker only left the Premier League in the summer but the recent report suggests he could already be set to return.

And if the deal does go through, there would be one clear winner and one loser at Villa Park.

Did he really play for us?! No Everton fan has managed to name all of these obscure Toffees players….

Winner: Jack Grealish

With nine goals and a total of six assists across all competitions in 2019/20, Grealish has been Villa’s greatest attacking and creative outlet in the ongoing campaign.

But despite all his talent and potential, the young 24-year-old midfielder is often the only spark the Villans have in the final third and much of the creative responsibility falls onto his shoulders.

After all, he’s leading the way in both goals and assists in the Premier League and it’s pretty safe to say that he could use a helping hand. Sturridge is a player who could offer him exactly that. With seven goals and four assists in Turkey so far, the former Liverpool player is someone who can both score and set up play himself.

Maybe his inclusion could lessen the burden of Grealish and help him reach a new level altogether.

Loser: Mbwana Samatta

Samatta only joined Villa this month and even though he has been hailed for his talent, it very much feels like Sturridge could push him down the pecking order.

Even with Wesley out with an injury, Samatta could end up playing second fiddle to the veteran that already knows the Premier League inside out, having previously played for Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City.

By all means, it wouldn’t be a good start for Samatta, who’d be fighting a rather tough battle right from the start at his new club.

In that regard, he just might become the loser of this whole deal.

Spurs boss Mourinho must battle history to have any chance of victory v City

Tottenham Hotspur play Manchester City this weekend in a match that they can ill-afford to lose.

Spurs are six points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, who play Leicester City on Saturday. Should the Blues beat Brendan Rodgers’ side, they will move nine points clear.

This should be a motivating factor for Jose Mourinho’s side, who have a busy run of games in February that includes an FA Cup fourth-round replay against Southampton and a Champions League meeting with Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.

Momentum, then, is important.

This weekend, though, Spurs face a team in second in the Premier League, the closest challengers to Jurgen Klopp’s seemingly unassailable Liverpool; the Reds are 16 points clear of Pep Guardiola’s men and could be 19 clear come kick-off on Sunday.

The big fat Tottenham quiz of 2019 – how much do you remember about the last year at Spurs?

There is unlikely to be any lack of motivation in Manchester, then, and Spurs have a mountain to climb if history is anything to go by.

Since 2010, the two sides have played each other 22 times, 20 times in the Premier League and twice, unforgettably, in last season’s Champions League.

Spurs have won just six of those games. In 2010, they won 1-0 to seal a top-four finish thanks to Peter Crouch’s header. In 2013, under Andre Villas-Boas, goals from Jermain Defoe, Clint Dempsey, and Gareth Bale gave them a 3-1 win at White Hart Lane. Under Mauricio Pochettino, they won 4-1 in 2015, kick-starting a run of three straight wins that included a 2-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium and a 2-0 win in north London.

Since then, they have beaten City just once, in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash, thanks to Son Heung-Min’s goal. One could argue that they were also winners in their subsequent defeat at the Etihad Stadium, losing 4-3 but progressing on away goals after Raheem Sterling’s injury-time goal was ruled out by a dramatic VAR intervention.

They have drawn with City just three times, in 2010, 2017 and 2019, with the most recent two ending 2-2. That, too, involved a VAR decision in injury time, this time ruling out Gabriel Jesus’ goal.

The losses, though, have come thick and fast.

Indeed, City have humiliated Spurs on no fewer than five occasions, beating them 6-0 in 2013, 5-1 in 2011 and 2014 and 4-1 in 2014 and 2017.

Between 2011 and 2015, in nine games played against Spurs, City won eight.

Since 2017, Spurs have beaten City just once, in that Champions League clash at their new stadium.

Their most recent encounter, however, ended in a 2-2 draw; Spurs had just 44.6% possession in the game, which can be described as something of a smash and grab.

One has to think, then, that Mourinho faces a significant challenge as he attempts to overhaul Guardiola and give his side all three points.

He has the weight of history against him but he will hope that the first encounter between the two sides in this new decade brings a seventh win since 2010.

Meanwhile, sources have given Football FanCast the lowdown on Spurs’ striker hunt!

Crystal Palace fans are not happy with the away fans’ treatment at Selhurst Park

Crystal Palace fans have taken to Twitter to express their dissatisfaction at the way in which the away supporters are treated when they come to visit Selhurst Park.

Their reactions come after a video emerged of Sheffield United fans singing along to an Oasis song, although they have changed the words to accommodate their new £22m record-signing – Norway international Sander Berge.

The video also shows a DJ in the away section, and while this provides a brilliant experience for the travelling support, some Crystal Palace fans on Twitter don’t seem to be too happy with how well the away fans are treated.

This game in question saw the Blades run out 1-0 winners thanks to Vicente Guaita’s own goal, which came after the Spaniard dropped the ball into his own net when Oliver Norwood whipped a devilish delivery right on top of him.

Result aside, it seems like the Sheffield United supporters had a great time at Selhurst Park thanks to the set-up in the away concourse, something that some of the Eagles’ fanbase aren’t too pleased about.

Let’s see what the Crystal Palace fans on Twitter have been saying about this topic…

To kick off the reaction, HLTCO said that they “genuinely” weren’t aware that the south Londoners did such a thing for away supporters every week.

This fan then said that such treatment “needs to be cut out ASAP” – HLTCO certainly doesn’t approve.

Elsewhere, these two supporters also voiced their displeasure at the situation.

‘The Bald Eagle’ asked why the club were making it fun for them, and also questioned why Palace are getting the away support in good spirits – this fan then added that it is “embarrassing” and “makes absolutely no sense”.

Then, Jess Booker mentioned that it is a “really odd thing to do” – another set of disgruntled fans.

Meanwhile, Warren said that whoever’s idea it was to do such a thing “should be fired immediately” – he then also branded the treatment as “pathetic”.

Lastly, @CPFCLewis and @ollieecpfc felt that the home fans were being neglected while the away support were nourished.

Calling all transfer experts! Can you get all 15 questions right on our Deadline Day quiz?

Lewis sarcastically said “don’t worry about us fans that pay hundreds” to watch “a maximum of four home wins a season”.

Then, Ollie added that Selhurst Park is “the only place where away fans get treated better than home fans” – this supporter, and the five other fans mentioned, certainly don’t seem very happy at all.

Leeds fans react to psychotherapist’s comments on the club

What is going wrong at Leeds United?

You’d be paid a lot of money if you could adequately answer that question, and one sporting professional believes that he has the answers the Whites are looking for.

Indeed, the Yorkshire Evening Post spoke to Oxford United’s psychotherapist Gary Bloom this week, and he believes that psychological problems could be the root of the problems at Elland Road.

Bloom is a lifelong Leeds United fan, and he believes that the introduction of a psychiatrist at the Yorkshire club could help the Whites in their quest for promotion.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side have won just two of their last nine league games, and the Oxford United employee believes that employing someone of his ilk would be helpful.

To be fair, Phil Hay’s insight a few weeks ago, and  Bielsa’s admission after the Whites’ win against Millwall about a confusing first five minutes do point towards mental issues within the squad, and fans believe that Bloom is spot on with his summary of the club’s current problems.

Others stated that they were surprised that Leeds haven’t already spotted these problems themselves.

It has to be said that it is strange that Bielsa’s incredible attention to detail hasn’t led to him exploring this avenue.

Another section of the fanbase were so impressed by Bloom’s views in the article that they called for the club to give him a job.

In other news, Marcelo Bielsa needs questioning after failing in one quest.

Leeds fans rip into Kiko Casilla after yet another mistake

Another match has come and gone, and once again Kiko Casilla has dropped a howler.

It’s hard to believe that any professional goalkeeper could mess up this badly for three consecutive games, but somehow the Spaniard has managed it.

Indeed, the goalie made it a hat-trick of errors leading to goals after his shocking gaffe against Wigan where he was beaten directly from a deflected corner, and his poor showing against Forest when he was beaten far too easily at his near post.

Somehow, this one tops the lot.

The goalkeeper received the most innocuous back pass you could imagine, yet moments later the ball was in the back of the net as he mis-controlled it and slipped as Said Benrahma nicked in to steal the ball before slotting home.

Leeds fans haven’t been too kind to Casilla in recent weeks after a string of poor performances, and unfortunately, it was time for them to bang that drum again.

We hate to say that any professional deserves a slating on social media, but there is simply no excusing what the former Real Madrid man did against Brentford.

Understandably, supporters took to Twitter to tear into the 33-year-old.

As you’d expect, a bi-product of Casilla’s poor showing was a number of fans calling for Illan Meslier to get a run in the first-team.

You can understand why fans want to see Meslier, not only has the current number one been poor lately, but the Frenchman was mightily impressive on his debut against Arsenal in January – earning plaudits from both sets of supporters.

In other news, one Sky Sports pundit thinks Leeds’ new signing could take a long time to settle.

Sunderland fans heap praise on Jordan Willis

Sunderland fans have taken to Twitter to pile the praise on Jordan Willis, following his performance in the 1-0 win over Oxford on Saturday. The man who signed on a free transfer in the summer after leaving Coventry was making his 30th start of the League One campaign, and marked the occasion with an excellent display as the Black Cats grabbed yet another win.

According to SofaScore, Willis made three clearances and registered two interceptions, while also winning one tackle and drawing one foul from the opposition.

The 25-year-old also won two out of his three duels both on the ground and in the air, while having 42 touches of the ball.

Additionally, he looked to have grabbed the game’s only goal after appearing to head home a first-half corner, although the strike later went down as an own goal from Oxford’s John Mousinho.

The win means that Sunderland now sit fifth in the table, just three points behind first-placed Rotherham.

Let’s see what the Black Cats fans on Twitter have been saying about Willis…

To kick off the reaction, these two supporters both tipped the centre-back to win the club’s Player of the Season award.

Michael Oates said that the Englishman is an “early shout” for the award, while Michael Potts added that he “has to be up there” for it – the latter fan also called Willis the “heartbeat” of the defence as well as a “tremendous player”.

Elsewhere, there was more praise for the Sunderland No.4.

Liam said that he has become the club’s “most consistent player” and also called him a “top defender”.

Ali then went one step further than that, branding Willis the “best defender in League One” – high praise indeed.

Lastly, these two supporters highlighted the fact that Willis was signed on a free.

@SAFCFANSVIEW said “let’s remember” that the recruitment team captured the defender for nothing before using two applauding emojis to praise the department.

From Jay-Z to Tom Hanks: Do you know which clubs these famous celebrities support?

David Boyle then labelled the Sunderland star as “easily the best signing we’ve made since the decline” and also branded him as “very impressive” – it’s safe to say these fans were left drooling over Willis’ display.

Spurs fans react to Ryan Sessegnon victory tweet

With fans at Tottenham Hotspur starved of any real match action, summer signing Ryan Sessegnon gave them a taste of what could’ve been by playing out the London derby on FIFA 20 instead, and his tweet has got them all talking about it.

The left-back defeated West Ham’s Michail Antonio 2-0, and as a result, the Hammers forward will have to don the Spurs shirt as a forfeit.

It wasn’t just for bragging rights or entertainment, though, as Sessegnon has donated £1,000 to charity.

The 19-year-old started himself, of course, with goals coming from Giovani Lo Celso and Lucas Moura.

Here’s how fans have been reacting…

Given the north Londoners’ recent struggles, some sections of the Spurs faithful can understandably take this as a big victory, especially as it’s getting one over one of their rivals.

There were plenty of jokes, such as the side actually keeping a clean sheet for once as well as picking up a win.

Call yourself a Premier League expert? How much did each of these big-money January signings cost?

Spurs have lost five of their last six in all competitions in a run that has seen them crash out of all cups whilst sinking seven points adrift of the top four in the Premier League.

And with a lack of real football on offer, it is clear that plenty have taken in what they can, which is summed up in the comment that it was “stupid and pointless” but still fun entertainment nonetheless.

Sessegnon has been limited to just 12 appearances this term, and the teen will surely be wanting to transform these virtual fortunes into performances on the pitch whenever is next possible.

While in other news, this Spurs star is Pochettino’s greatest legacy at the club…

Arsenal: Many fans slam Jeramine Jenas’ FA Cup commentary

Arsenal fans have slammed BT Sport pundit and former Tottenham Hotspur ace Jermaine Jenas over his punditry skills in the Gunners’ 2-0 win over League One side Portsmouth in the FA Cup round-of-sixteen last night.

Jenas gave the man-of-the-match award to defender David Luiz yet there were arguably more impressive performances going forward for the Gunners considering the fact WhoScored rated the likes of Sokratis and Eddie Nketiah higher. Indeed, he was also criticised for his punditry in general by Arsenal fans on Twitter.

The Gunners did manage to keep a clean sheet but the first half was far from easy against a side two divisions below them. PompeyÂmanaged eleven shots on the Arsenal goal and most of them came in the first half, so they were perhaps lucky to be 1-0 up at half-time through a Sokratis volley.

Youngster Reiss Nelson grabbed two assists on a night that also saw Nketiah score (highlights via BBC) and, throughout the game, fans were tearing into Jenas. With that in mind, here’s a closer look at some of the reaction, as one supporter lambasted their former rival as a ‘waste of space’.
