Premier League on alert as 5 set to leave Real Madrid

With Jose Mourinho looking to stamp his mark upon Real Madrid, he is almost certain to bring in a draft of big-name players in order to dethrone Spanish champions Barcelona. The Spanish and English press are already working in overdrive, suggesting that the ‘Special One’ is looking to sign the likes of Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Ashley Cole. The anticipated summer influx at the Bernabeu will undoubtedly cast doubt over the futures of several current Real Madrid players. With Premier League clubs looking to bolster their squads this summer, they could do far worse than look to Madrid for reinforcements. The following five players are all expected to leave Spain this summer.

Lassana Diarra

A familiar name to fans of English football, the little man known as ‘Lass’ could be set for a return to English shores. Despite an impressive first campaign at the Bernabeu, the former Chelsea man frequently found himself out of favour at Real Madrid last season and may be surplus to requirements this summer.

The tough-tackling midfielder would find himself welcome at a number of Premier League sides this summer. Manchester United, bereft of the steel provided by the injured Owen Hargreaves, would greatly benefit from Diarra’s drive and tenacity. Arsenal, a side considered to be to ‘too soft’, could do far worse than re-signing the Frenchman to strengthen their midfield. Either way, Diarra is likely to be a sought-after commodity this summer.

Royston Drenthe

Having seen his career stall at the Bernabeu, former Dutch U21 international Royston Drenthe is likely to leave Real Madrid before the start of next season. The 24-year-old, who can competently perform at both left-back and left-midfield, has been used sparingly at the club, featuring just 28 times in La Liga over the course of the last two seasons.

Despite an impressive start to his Real Madrid career, Drenthe’s form and development has dipped, with the player failing to build upon the promise that he showed at former club Feyenoord. Indeed the Dutch ace struggled with anxiety issues having been booed by his own fans during the club’s 1-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna two seasons ago. Royston Drenthe has been rumoured to have been offered as a makeweight in Real Madrid’s bid to sign hotly coveted winger Angel di Maria, thus suggesting that his Bernabeu future is non-existent. Juventus are also thought to be keeping tabs on the 24-year-old.

Guti

The frequently-controversial Guti looks set to seek pastures new this summer. A product of Real Madrid’s youth academy, the attacking midfielder is thought to have played his last game for the club, with Jose Mourinho informing Spanish newspaper AS that “Guti, for me, is out. I read his statements and for me that is what counts. He said goodbye to the fans and left the field”.

Rumours have suggested that Guti may be heading for the rainy climes of northwest England, with Blackburn Rovers thought to have made a tentative offer for the midfielder. Guti may relish the opportunity to link up with former team-mate and close friend Michel Salgado at Ewood Park, as well as the chance to work under Sam Allardyce, a man who facilitated the Indian summers of Youri Djorkaeff, Fernando Hierro and Jay-Jay Okocha. Should he decline a move to Ewood Park, Guti will have no shortage of suitors, as Galatasaray and Zenit St. Petersburg are both thought to be interested in the 33-year-old.

Raul

Raul’s status as Real Madrid’s all-time leading goalscorer does not look like it will be enough to save him from the Bernabeu axe this summer. Having scored an astonishing 324 goals for the capital club, the curtain may be about to fall on the Spaniard’s glorious 16-year career at Real Madrid. Stories emerging from Spanish newspaper AS suggest that the club are considering a termination of his contract one year early, thus allowing him to move on this summer for free.

Though no Real Madrid officials have commented on such conjecture, Jose Mourinho said of Raul that, “He is a player I have always admired, but the decision whether or not he plays rests with (Real sports director Jorge) Valdano.” Although the 32-year-old is set to enter the twilight of his career, his pedigree is unquestionable and he has a lot to offer for prospective clubs. Likely to be available on a free, many managers could do a lot worse than taking a punt on such a distinguished individual.

Rafael van der Vaart

Set to feature heavily for the Dutch national side this summer, versatile midfielder Rafael van der Vaart would be a quality acquisition for any side looking to boost their creative options. The versatile schemer, who can operate in a variety of roles in the attacking third, has not enjoyed a happy time at the Bernabeu since his move from German side Hamburg in 2008. Following the arrival of Manuel Pellegrini last summer, the Dutch international was informed that he would not be a part of the now-departed manager’s plans for that season, with his diminished squad status highlighted by his failure to receive a squad number. However, Van der Vaart admirably managed to force his way back into manager’s plans, impressively ending the season with seven goals in 30 outings for Los Blancos.

Despite his Real Madrid re-emergence, the former Ajax man’s Spanish future looks to be in doubt. Compatriot and close friend Arjen Robben recently said of van der Vaart that “He has told me that, if Bayern were to ask him to come, he would cycle to Munich just to get a contract here”, adding “Rafael told me that Bayern is a great club when we were playing together at Real Madrid.” In spite of van der Vaart’s admiration for the German side, the player has been heavily linked with potential moves to both Stamford Bridge and Old Trafford this summer.

Del Bosque admits mixed feelings

Coach Vicente del Bosque admitted Spain were far from at their best as they booked a first-ever place in the World Cup semi-finals.

The European champions reached the last four after a 1-0 victory over Paraguay in Johannesburg on Saturday evening.

A game of two missed penalties and a solitary effort from the sharp-shooting David Villa brought life to an otherwise drab contest.

Oscar Cardozo missed a second-half penalty for the South Americans and Xabi Alonso followed suit for Spain before Villa's decisive strike in the 83rd minute at Ellis Park.

Spain will now face an impressive Germany side in Wednesday's second semi-final.

"In my time a Spanish side never felt so uncomfortable or passed the ball so inaccurately," explained del Bosque.

"But now it's an absolutely marvellous moment for Spanish football and our game is at the very top.

"We didn't play a terribly good match today but we are happy and we know we have the necessary resources to face any rival including Germany.

"It's a great moment for Spanish football. We beat Germany in the final of the Euros but they are among the elite teams and I think that speaks volumes for European football."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Gosling confirmed by Magpies

Newcastle United have completed the signing of former Everton midfielder Dan Gosling.

Gosling, 20, has penned a four-year contract at St James' Park to become the second new signing since the Magpies secured promotion back to the Premier League.

Fellow midfielder James Perch arrived from Nottingham Forest earlier in the month.

"It's a brilliant move for me. Now that the deal is done I just can't wait to get started," Gosling to his new club's official website.

"I've played at St James' Park before and know all about the amazing atmosphere. Playing there in a black and white shirt is something I've thought about already and it will be a great day when I finally get to walk out in front of 50,000 people.

"The gaffer Chris Hughton and all of the lads have been great with me and made me feel really welcome since I arrived and hopefully I can repay the faith that they've shown in me."

Gosling left Everton in controversial circumstances at the beginning of July.

The Premier League were asked to make a ruling after the England Under-21 international was not given a new contract offer in writing.

The club claimed that they offered Gosling a new deal verbally, but nothing was put down in writing by the required date.Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Arsene Wenger hints at Arsenal extension

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has dropped a major hint that he will end his managerial career with the Gunners.

The 61-year-old Frenchman has only another 12 months left on his current contract, but says that extending his reign at the Emirates Stadium is the most likely scenario.

He told The Observer:"I am at a stage where if I extend my contract it means I will finish my career at club level at Arsenal.

"If I go for a different challenge – I have been offered many challenges you know – it has to be now.

"That's a decision I have to make. But basically I have no desire to change from here. I have one more year and we are maybe thinking about extending it.

"I cannot see that my enthusiasm will drop, but I am not necessarily the same resistance physically as Alex Ferguson.

Mario Balotelli’s agent slams cash talk

The agent of Internazionale striker Mario Balotelli has angrily denied newspaper reports suggesting that his client's move to Manchester City has hit the rocks due to the player's personal demands.

The 19-year-old was reported to be asking for around £180,000-a-week to join the Citizens, a figure which is disputed by agent Mino Raiola.

He told Sky Sport 24:"It's not true what was written in the British tabloids. I would be preoccupied for the next five years of my life if I respond to such things in the tabloids.

"Mario has never asked for anything because he's a guy who isn't only interested in money.

"We have no problems with City nor Inter. We have made an important step forward, but at the table all three parties must be happy."

Meanwhile, Wolfsburg director Frank Aehlig has revealed that City are the only club to have made a formal offer for striker Edi Dzeko, who continues to be linked with Juventus.

Aehlig told Itasportpress.it:"There have been many things said and written for the past few months about Dzeko.

"Neither Juventus nor any other Italian club have ever made an official offer for the player. Only Manchester City have come forward with a concrete offer.

"Dzeko will remain with us because the season is about to begin and will not be going anywhere."Subscribe to Football FanCast News Headlines by Email

Ben Foster eyes England starting role

Birmingham City's Ben Foster has set his sights on becoming England new number one goalkeeper.

Foster has made an impressive start to life at St Andrew's following a £4million summer switch from Manchester United.

The 27-year-old left Old Trafford in search of regular first-team football with the goal of becoming England number one on his mind.

The keeper earned the Blues a 2-1 Premier League victory over Blackburn Rovers on Saturday following a penalty save from Morten Gamst Pedersen.

Foster, who has been capped four times, will compete for the international starting jersey with Manchester City's Joe Hart ahead of next month's European Championship qualifying double-header with Bulgaria and Switzerland.

"When I'm with England I want to be playing, it's as simple as that really," he declared.

Top TEN goal celebrations

Goal celebrations have become a ubiquitous sight in the modern game. With players going to great lengths on the training-ground to perfect their celebrations, it seems right to reward the very best with a spot on our top 10 list of goal celebrations.

10. Finidi George

Finidi George ‘took the piss’ out of Greece quite literally with this unique celebration in the 1994 World Cup. The Nigerian winger capped off a swift counter-attack with a deft chip over the goalkeeper and proceeded to celebrate by imitating a urinating dog by cocking his leg to one side.

9. Jurgen Klinsmann

Klinsmann arrived in England with a reputation as a diver and he played up to this image with his iconic goal celebration of diving head first and sliding along the pitch. His celebration has become so well known that it is referred to as ‘doing a Klinsmann’.

8. Craig Bellamy

Apparently, Craig Bellamy takes his karaoke very seriously. Bellamy didn’t take kindly to John Arne Riise refusing to take part in a team sing-a-long and went all Ellen Woods on the Norwegian and took a nine-iron to Riise’s shins.

Liverpool’s first game after the golf-club incident was against Barcelona in the Champions League and almost inevitably, Bellamy found himself on the score-sheet. He decided to mark the occasion with an imaginary swing of a golf club. In a final act of poetic irony, Bellamy set up Riise for the winning goal as Liverpool won 2-1 at the Nou Camp.

7. Cristiano Lucarelli

We all know that footballers tend to love themselves a bit more than regular folk but Livorno legend Cristiano Lucarelli takes it one step further. After putting Livorno 3-0 up against Piacenza, Lucarelli proceeded to take off his shirt and dry-hump it in what can only be described as one of the most bizarre celebrations ever.

6. Francisco Gallardo

Carrying on the homoerotic high-jinks is ex-Sevilla player Francisco Gallardo who decided to celebrate Jose Antonio Reyes’ goal by nibbling on his penis. Gallardo’s peckishness for pecker was viewed rather dimly by the Spanish Football Federation who fined and suspended Gallardo for being in breach of the rules that govern “sporting dignity and decorum”.

5. Temuri Ketsbaia

Scoring a goal is meant to be a joyous occasion but for Ketsbaia, it was an opportunity to vent some frustration. Unhappy with his frequent role as a substitute, Ketsbaia celebrated his last-minute winner against Bolton by flinging his shirt into the crowd and attempting to do the same with his boots. When that didn’t come off, he decided to violently kick the advertising hoardings while fending off his teammate Phillipe Albert.

4. Paul Gascoigne

Paul Gascoigne’s infamous ‘dentist chair’ celebration after he scored his brilliant goal against Scotland is one of the most memorable celebrations of all time. Gascoigne was photographed on a pre-tournament tour in Hong Kong strapped into a dentist’s chair with alcohol being poured into his mouth. Upon scoring his goal, Gazza decided the recreate the occasion by laying on his back while a teammate sprayed water into his open mouth.

3. Robbie Fowler

Robbie Fowler’s controversial goal celebration against Everton landed the Kop legend in hot water. The striker celebrated his goal by pretending the white line of the penalty area was cocaine. This was in response to false accusations that Fowler was a drug user. Manager Gerard Houllier launched a ludicrous attempt to defend Fowler’s celebrations by claiming that he was ‘eating the grass’. Somehow Gerard, I don’t think so.

2. Jimmy Bullard

Jimmy Bullard has developed a reputation as one of the funniest players in the game and naturally it fell to him to deliver one of the best celebrations of all time. Bullard scored Hull City’s equaliser against Manchester City from the penalty spot and he replicated manager Phil Brown’s infamous on-pitch team talk from the previous season.

1. FC Stjarnan

Clinching the number one spot on our list are the players of Icelandic club FC Stjarnan who have come up with a whole host of creative celebrations. These include the human toilet, the human bicycle and my personal favourite the catching and photographing of a fish.

Hodgson faces uncertain future

Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton has confirmed manager Roy Hodgson could be bought out of his contract should the club be sold.

With New England Sprts Venture expected to take the ailing Premier League side on, Broughton has admitted a clause was placed in the former Fulham coach's contract when he joined in the summer.

It has been reported that Hodgson would receive a £3million lump sum should any new owners decide they want a new man at the helm, pouring uncertainty on his future.

"Roy knew when he signed from Fulham that we were in the process of finding new owners," he revealed.

"He was fully reconciled with the possibility there would be an ownership change and the risk involved with that.

"With that in mind, provisions were made in Roy's contract to relate specifically to any change in ownership."

Is Carlo Ancelotti missing a transfer trick here?

“Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has ruled out buying any new players in the January transfer window unless injuries force him to ask owner Roman Abramovich to open his cheque book” Chelsea currently sit top of the English Premier League and also top of group F in the Champions League, which would suggest that there is little need for any new signings.

With Ancelotti’s experience, gained through the years at the very top of the game, who are we to question his judgement? However, I do consider his position something of a gamble. Chelsea only have 3 proven strikers in Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Salomon Kalou and if injury were to strike two of the three I’m not sure that Daniel Sturridge or Gael Kakuta could step up to the plate and provide the goals.

For those who agree with me, we can still take heart in the fact that the Italian’s strike-force has already scored 27 goals this season, five more than any other Premier League team. It would seem therefore that my fears are unfounded and that Chelsea are indeed well enough equipped to score goals even in the absence of some of his first choice strikers. Since Carlo Ancelotti has proven he can manage some of Europe’s top teams arguably he deserves our trust.

The Chelsea manager is not alone in his unwillingness to trade in January market. Sir Alex Ferguson says: “We won’t be buying in January, definitely not. If you want someone to play in Europe, you are limited right away in January. There are hundreds of players cup-tied for Europe. By January we will have five months left of the season. I will have Antonio Valencia back hopefully towards the end of February which is a new player coming back.”

[divider]

[divider]

The United ‘gaffer’ touches upon two points here which seem relevant to Chelsea’s situation. Chelsea will, in the near future, welcome Frank Lampard back to the fold who will give added impetus to Chelsea’s push for the title and their pursuit of the Champions’ League. He also highlights the fact that buying in January is never sensible. With inflated prices and most of the best players cup-tied maybe Ancelotti’s reluctance to delve into the transfer market has a point.

Furthermore, Ancelotti is showing confidence in his present squad of players, always a good psychological boost to a winning side, which he may feel is the best way to prepare his players for the challenges ahead. Taking all of this into account maybe the Chelsea boss is indeed making the correct decision to wait until the Summer before he further strengthens his squad. Finally, Ancelotti states that they can be competitive in all competitions.” He adds “that the most important thing is to avoid injury, when possible.”I If Chelsea therefore, can steer clear of long term injury to and they can carry on with the form they are currently showing, then there is little reason for Ancelotti to spend in January.

Is he wrong in his optimism?
