Christie 2.0: Celtic can get Iheanacho firing by unleashing "creative" star

It is remarkable that an unbeaten domestic season so far for Celtic has almost been overlooked, with supporters rightly nearing breaking point amid what appears a simply disastrous summer of transfer business.

Having failed to replace Kyogo Furuhashi in January, the Hoops have since seen Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah depart without securing adequate replacement, with talisman Daizen Maeda also revealing his own desire to leave, albeit while ultimately staying put.

The Scottish champions remain at the top of the tree in the Premiership, yet after reason for encouragement in the Champions League last term, there are few signs that they are kicking on under Brendan Rodgers.

Things, it must be said, have all gone a little bit stale, with intrigue building over just how late arrival Kelechi Iheanacho will fare in his new surroundings, following his free transfer switch from Sevilla.

Rodgers has got a tune out of the Nigerian marksman in the past at Leicester City. Can he do so again in Glasgow?

Iheanacho's record under Rodgers

As already suggested last week, there is an air of Scott Sinclair about this latest deal, with Rodgers getting out the phonebook to reunite with one of his former stars who has fallen on hard times in recent years.

Sinclair went on to flourish in green and white, and hopefully Iheanacho can do the same, albeit with the 28-year-old enduring a difficult few years that yielded just three goals in 11 games during his stop-start stint in Spain, alongside scoring just once in 14 outings for Middlesbrough.

Even more worringly is that the one-time Manchester City striker hasn’t actually broken double figures for league goals since the 2020/21 campaign, as per Transfermarkt, where he netted 12 times for Leicester in the Premier League.

In fact, that is the only time in his senior career that the mercurial left-footer has reached double figures for league goals full stop, with his previous best coming back in 2015/16, where he scored eight top-flight goals at the Etihad.

And yet, for all that concern, if anyone is to get him fit and firing again, it is Rodgers, with Iheanacho having scored 43 goals and registered 25 assists in 143 games under the Northern Irishman to date – by far the best record of his career under any manager.

Still only 28 and “in his peak years”, in the words of the Celtic boss, the 6 foot 1 ace could prove to be a bargain yet for the Premiership side, emulating recent free transfer success stories such as Aaron Mooy and, of course, Kasper Schmeichel.

Iheanacho will be in need of service if he is to shine at Parkhead, however, with Rodgers needing to find a new creative hub in his muted outfit.

Rodgers must now unleash the new Ryan Christie

The best Celtic sides of recent times have been blessed with a difference-maker in that advanced number ten berth, be it Matt O’Riley, Tom Rogic, Ryan Christie or even Kris Commons.

That string of left-footers have all blossomed across the last decade or so, with there perhaps the opportunity there for a certain Luke McCowan to follow in their footsteps, despite having largely played a bit-part role since his switch from Dundee last summer.

Signed for just £1m, the boyhood Celtic fan is yet to truly be given the chance to showcase what he’s all about, having previously recorded 15 goals and assists in his final full season at Dens Park.

47 appearances have since come his way under Rodgers, albeit with only 16 of those actually coming from the start, with the likes of Reo Hatate, Arne Engels and now Benjamin Nygren favoured as part of that midfield trio, alongside the constant pivot of Callum McGregor.

When he has been given an opportunity, however, the Scotsman has typically taken it, chalking up a respectable tally of eight goals and nine assists for the club to date, including the decisive strike off the bench to see off St Mirren on the opening weekend.

Once hailed as the “best midfielder in the league outside the Old Firm” by writer Kai Watson – who also described him as a “creative and tenacious” asset – McCowan is that man who can unlock the door. The man who can create something out of nothing.

Indeed, ex-Celtic star Andy Walker has even made the comparison between the 27-year-old and the aforementioned Christie in the past, having said as much amid his bargain switch last summer:

Signed from Inverness Caledonian Thistle back in 2015, Christie – now of AFC Bournemouth – went on dazzle in green and white, registering 86 goals and assists in just 151 games, operating centrally and off the right flank.

McCowan seemingly has the quality to take on a similar role in this current set-up, with Celtic’s number 14 notably creating nine ‘big chances’ last term in the Premiership, alongside averaging 1.3 key passes per game, as per Sofascore.

Such creative prowess could ensure that McCowan is the man to get the best out of Iheanacho, with the 58-cap Nigerian notably thriving in tandem with ex-Aberdeen star James Maddison at Leicester, after combining for ten goals with the English playmaker, as per Transfermarkt.

Taking on a similar number ten or advanced playmaking berth, McCowan may well be just the solution for both Rodgers and Iheanacho.

Of course, the new man will have to contribute himself, although he certainly can’t do it all on his own.

Edouard 2.0: Celtic dud who was sold for £1.4m is now better than Iheanacho

A forgotten former Celtic striker, who aimed to replicate Odsonne Édouard, has been outscoring Kelechi Ịheanachọ since being sold for £1.4m.

Not Quansah: Liverpool have lost their own Guehi in "generational" talent

Jurgen Klopp’s decision to leave Liverpool at the end of the 2023/24 season hung heavy over Anfield as the Arne Slot era looked to get up and running, and many thought the former Feyenoord coach would fall quickly by the wayside.

But Liverpool won the Premier League, and Slot is now renowned not just for his shrewd triumphs in his Dutch homeland but his success on a grander scale with Liverpool, who have fortified last year’s exploits with an utterly merciless spending spree across the summer transfer window, now the overwhelming favourites to retain their crown.

Liverpool did have to haul some surplus this summer, selling a whole host of first-team players in a major reshuffle. Up-and-coming stars such as Harvey Elliott and Jarell Quansah were sold despite making headway as top English talents over the past few years.

Quansah fell toward the fringes under Slot’s wing last season, and was sold to Bayer Leverkusen for £35m after being told he would continue to play a peripheral role throughout 2025/26.

Liverpool signed 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni to replace him, but Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi was the one who was viewed right up until the final moments of the transfer window as the perfect player to slot in alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Liverpool missed out on Guehi

When Guehi scored a peach against Aston Villa before the September international break, his celebration carried with it the sense that he had written an incredible, fairytale ending to his chapter at Crystal Palace.

A move to Liverpool wasn’t just on the cards, but imminent, only it fell through at the eleventh hour on deadline day after the Eagles failed to secure an adequate replacement for Oliver Glasner’s captain, who has been instrumental across 2025 for the multi-trophy-winning side.

Guehi, 25, has emerged over the past few years as one of the best defenders in the Premier League, with his combative and composed defensive style merging with a technical game that stretches beyond what is expected of a centre-half.

Indeed, he has been described as an “absolute gem” by his former coach Michael Beale, who singled out his formative years at Chelsea’s Cobham as building his technical level.

Glasner, for his part, is adamant that certain stories of his desperate – and successful – efforts to keep Guehi at the club were false.

In any case, Guehi remains a Palace player and has no intention of penning a new deal that would extend his contract beyond its expiry at the end of the season.

A move to Merseyside remains a convincing possibility, with Liverpool snapping him up for free.

In this way, Guehi could mimic another deal from the closed summer transfer window, becoming Liverpool’s version of a player who actually left Anfield for a European giant just a few months ago.

Liverpool's own version of Guehi

While the Anfield side were willing to part with such players, it was a different tale with homegrown hero Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was billed by many as Liverpool’s new version of Steven Gerrard after emerging from the academy.

But the 26-year-old instead left at the end of his contract and signed for Real Madrid.

It was a contentious decision, but one which the 26-year-old made after much consideration, leaving England and the Premier League and joining Los Blancos, Liverpool’s biggest European rivals of modern times, for a fresh challenge and a chance to take his career to the next level.

Many Reds couldn’t understand the decision, with jeers when the right-back entered the fray after confirmation of his decision was made known in May, during a draw with Arsenal, pushing the unsavoury situation toward boiling point.

Even so, Alexander-Arnold celebrated Liverpool’s Premier League title with his peers and showed an outpouring of emotion after playing his final match in a Liverpool shirt at the end of the season. The Three Lions star was synonymous with his former outfit’s resurgence of the past decade, after all.

Hailed as a “generational” talent by content creator Asim Mahmood, Liverpool must regret losing such an incredible, irreplaceable playmaker, one of the greatest passers of the ball in English history.

There are parallels between his situation and Guehi’s at Palace, to be sure, and those similarities might become more pronounced in the coming months, when talk of a pre-contract agreement with the Eagles captain gathers steam.

Whether Liverpool win that battle remains to be seen, with sources recently suggesting Chelsea are gearing up to make a move of their own for Guehi after the new year.

But if Guehi does have his heart set on a move to Liverpool, as has been suggested, Slot might just find himself welcoming his own version of Alexander-Arnold, landing an elite player on a Bosman and one who is cherished by the fanbase of a club who cannot bear the thought of his departure.

Of course, Trent will return to his old stomping ground sooner than he might have hoped for, with Real Madrid drawn against Liverpool in the league phase of the Champions League.

Liverpool chiefs will be frustrated that they couldn’t convince the Scouser to stay put, but Slot’s side have already shown they can overcome the setback, just as there is confidence that the failed attempt to sign Guehi from Crystal Palace will not stop the club from achieving their goals.

FSG have already sold Liverpool's homegrown Zubimendi for just £15m

Gohar’s three-for keeps Middlesex fighting but big deficit is on the cards

Lancashire 353 for 9 (Harris 134*, Jennings 55, Jones 40) lead Middlesex 260 (Robson 70, Holden 69, Aspinwall 4-32) by 93 runsMarcus Harris’s century on Red Rose debut helped Lancashire take charge on day two at Lord’s.The Australian Test opener, batting at No. 4, survived an early scare to share a stand of 120 for the fifth wicket with Luke Wells (38). It was Harris’ 30th first-class ton and he became the sixth overseas player to make a hundred on his debut for the county, a trend started by his fellow Australian, the late Andrew Symonds in 2005.Keaton Jennings earlier weighed in 55 enabling the visitors to reach the close on 353 for 9.The Middlesex bowlers toiled hard, with little luck, Zafar Gohar returning 3 for 77 on debut and Blake Cullen 2 for 70, the latter’s first County Championship wickets since he dismissed Mohammed Rizwan at Hove in May 2022, such have been the young seamer’s injury woes. The alliance between Harris and Wells turned the tide of a day where Middlesex had initially held sway.Their frugal bowling in the morning session especially led to a pedestrian scoring rate of two an over by the visitors on a slow, unresponsive pitch.Lancashire’s inability to break the shackles brought reward for the home side, Jennings departing to a sharp catch at slip by Robson off Ryan Higgins, shortly after raising his 50 with the aid of eight fours. The wicket came in a spell of six overs for one run from the Zimbabwean allrounder and the pressure he exerted affected other batters too.Josh Bohannon was in skittish mood from the off, edging one just short of Robson at slip before he’d scored. He’d got to 11 when he slashed at a slightly wider one from Higgins only for Leus du Plooy to grass the chance away to his right hand in the gully.Even so, there was further reward for the Seaxes shortly before lunch when Toby Roland-Jones found the edge of Michael Jones’ bat and wicketkeeper Jack Davies took a low catch away to his right. On the resumption, Bohannon briefly suggested he’d left his pre-lunch struggles behind him, driving Henry Brookes straight for four, but the introduction of Gohar proved his undoing.Bohannon played back to one from the slow left-armer which went on with the arm and crashed into off stump. And when Matty Hurst injudiciously hooked a short one from Cullen down the throat of Nathan Fernandes at long leg the visitors were 169 for 4, still almost 100 in arrears.Even Harris wasn’t exempt from such rushes of blood to the head, having charged Gohar on 11, inside edging the ball beyond both leg stump and wicketkeeper Davies. Had he not made the thinnest of contacts the stumping would have been a formality had he not been bowled in any event.Harris though resolved to make the most of his slice of fortune, knuckling down to take charge, driving with increasing authority before raising his 50 with his eighth boundary, a savage cut to the cover fence. As the home bowlers tired in the glorious evening sunshine he forged on to three figures reached via an edge out of the clutches of slip to third man.At the other end, Wells, though playing second fiddle, hit two huge sixes, one over mid-on to get off the mark and the stand reached 120 before he waved lazily at one to be caught behind with the lead at 27.Harris was reprieved on 123 when dropped at slip by Robson, but late wickets for the persevering home attack offered Middlesex some hope ahead of day three.

"Goes under the radar" – Tottenham told "important" Frank star deserves far more credit

Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank boasts a wealth of hugely impressive talents in his squad that have seriously impressed under him so far.

The Dane’s exceptional start to life in the Spurs dugout has yielded four wins from seven in all competitions so far, including just two defeats, and they were desperately unlucky to lose that UEFA Super Cup final to European champions PSG.

While a draw at underperforming Brighton last time out is hardly cause for major celebration, the Amex has been a very unhappy hunting ground for Spurs in recent years.

Ange Postecoglou’s Lilywhites blew a two-goal lead to surrender a 3-2 defeat on the south coast this time last year – losing 4-2 away to them the year prior – and history threatened to repeat itself again when Spurs found themselves 2-0 behind last Saturday.

However, Frank’s side displayed real dogged professionalism to claw themselves back to 2-2 — courtesy of goals from Richarlison and reported Spurs transfer target Jan Paul van Hecke (OG) — and had even more chances to score before the final whistle.

Xavi Simons missed a great opportunity to net his first Premier League goal for Tottenham, in what was a promising display of what is to come from the Dutchman, while Lucas Bergvall added to his ever-growing collection of excellent performances.

Spurs’ midfield is looking stacked right now, with summer loan signing Joao Palhinha also impressing as he eyes a 2026 permanent move to Tottenham.

Alongside the likes of Bergvall and Palhinha, a special nod has to go to the young Pape Sarr.

Tottenham told "important" Pape Sarr deserves much more credit

Speaking to Tottenham News, ex-Brentford boss Martin Allen has claimed that Sarr has gone unnoticed with his Spurs performances this season, and deserves more credit.

Signed by Fabio Paratici in 2021 for around £15 million, the Senegalese spent the rest of 21/22 back on loan at FC Metz before playing his way into the Spurs senior team.

The 23-year-old was awarded a new long-term contract last year as a result of his showings under Postecoglou, keeping him at the club until 2030, and Sarr has been equally as good since Frank replaced the Australian.

Tottenham Hotspur's Mathys Tel, Pape Matar Sarr, Richarlison and YvesBissouma

Prior to their draw at Brighton, Sarr was handed the starting nod by Frank in each of Tottenham’s first four Premier League games — bagging his first of the campaign in a 3-0 win at West Ham and assisting Brennan Johnson’s third against Burnley in a 3-0 opening weekend victory.

According to WhoScored, the ex-Ligue 1 sensation is Tottenham’s third-best performer by average match rating per 90 in the top flight, with only Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison sitting above him.

In truth, Sarr’s price tag from four years ago is now looking like chump change, and he could be a fixture of Frank’s midfield for years to come if he carries on performing when required.
