Celtic sold "incredible" gem for £2.5m, now he's similar to £100m PL star

Celtic head coach Brendan Rodgers may be hoping for a quieter summer when the next transfer window rolls around, as he has had to deal with plenty of player turnover in his two years back at Parkhead already.

The Hoops sold Jota to Al-Ittihad and Carl Starfelt to Celta Vigo in his first summer back at the club in 2023, whilst Aaron Mooy also decided to retire, which meant that the manager lost several key players early on.

Jota, of course, returned to Glasgow in the recent January transfer window, joining on a permanent deal from Rennes, but Rodgers did not get to work with the Portuguese star for his first 18 months at the club.

The Northern Irish boss also lost Kyogo Furuhashi in that window earlier this year, as the Japan international made the move to Ligue 1 side Rennes ahead of the second half of the season.

Rodgers was also dealt a blow when the club sold Danish attacking midfielder Matt O’Riley to Brighton & Hove Albion last summer for a club-record fee of more than £25m.

That significant fee, of course, allowed Celtic to reinvest and it must be said that the Hoops have been excellent at extracting value out of their top talents over the years.

Celtic's record player sales

The Scottish Premiership giants smashed their club-record sale by moving the Denmark international on for more than £25m, beating the figures that were brought in for Jota and Kieran Tierney in the past.

As you can see in the table below, the Portuguese forward and the Scotland international were both sold for a fee of £25m, which means that the club have raked in £25m or more from three separate players in their history.

The Scottish side have also sold two strikers – in Odsonne Edouard and Moussa Dembele – for more than £18m in recent years, which adds further evidence to suggest that Celtic are excellent at cashing in on their top talents, as much as the managers may not want to lose them.

Celtic know how to bring in talented young players and help them to thrive in their first-team, which puts them in the shop window for teams in Europe’s major leagues – who then swoop in to pay millions for them.

However, the Hoops do not always get it right, as no one is perfect, and there have been cases where a player has been sold on for a small fee, only for their value to skyrocket after their exit from Parkhead.

Where Are They Now

Scottish central midfielder Ryan Christie is one excellent example of this, as the left-footed star has thrived since his move away from Glasgow.

How much Celtic sold Ryan Christie for

The midfield dynamo was signed from Inverness in the summer of 2015 and spent his first two years away on loan, at Inverness for six months and Aberdeen for 18 months, to gain vital first-team experience.

Christie eventually became a first-team player for Celtic at the start of the 2018/19 campaign, under Rodgers, and produced an eye-catching 11 goals and nine assists in 38 appearances in all competitions.

The Scotland international followed that up with a staggering return of 21 goals and 16 assists in 45 outings in all competitions in the following season, as he provided a constant threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals for his side.

Christie’s last season with the Scottish giants yielded seven goals and 15 assists in 46 matches for the Hoops in the 2020/21 campaign, before his move to Bournemouth in the summer of 2021.

Celtic failed to tie him down to a new contract, with his deal running out in 2022, and sold him to the Cherries for a reported fee of just £2.5m, which has turned out to be a bargain for the English club.

Ryan Christie is now similar to a £100m Premier League star

Almost four years later, Christie has made 147 appearances for Bournemouth, who are now in the Premier League, and is similar to Newcastle United superstar Bruno Guimaraes.

The experienced ace has started 25 times in the division this term and caught the eye with 3.0 tackles and interceptions per game, along with five ‘big chances’ created for his teammates.

Per FBref, Christie and Guimaraes have been statistically similar in the Premier League over the last 365 days – both playing in central midfield in the English top-flight.

As you can see in the chart above, both players like to create chances for their teammates, whilst they are also excellent when it comes to progressing play through passes, take-ons, and carries. This illustrates how well the Scottish ace has performed, particularly when you consider that Guimaraes had a £100m release clause in his Newcastle contract last summer.

Bruno Guimaraes

It shows that the former Celtic star has performed well at Premier League level for Andoni Iraola’s side this season, because his statistics have led to comparisons to the £100m-rated Brazil international, and – as shown in the chart – he ranks highly among his peers in a host of metrics.

Christie, who was described as an “incredible lad” by former boss Gary O’Neil, may not be worth £100m to Bournemouth, but his value has soared way beyond the £2.5m that Celtic brought in for his services back in 2021.

As you can see in the table above, the 30-year-old maestro is now worth a whopping £10m, per Transfermarkt, and that is significantly more than the fee the Cherries paid for him almost four years ago.

Therefore, Celtic may regret only bringing in £2.5m for the mercurial playmaker when they opted to sell him in 2021, or they may rue that they were unable to agree a new contract to keep him at Parkhead ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, as he has gone on to become a fantastic player down south.

The Hoops will, therefore, hope to continue their trend of selling their key players for significant fees, rather than smaller sums like £2.5m, if they end up moving any of their stars on in the upcoming summer window.

Captain Edwards, Nidamanuru help Netherlands secure first points

Shayan Jahangir stood tall amidst top order ruins but couldn’t prevent USA’s third straight loss

Scott Edwards navigated his side out of choppy waters in a tricky chase, arriving at 83 for 4 in pursuit of a target of 212 to strike an unbeaten half-century as Netherlands eventually eased across the line by five wickets in Harare. Edwards finished with 67 not out off 60 balls, clinching victory with a trademark sweep to record Netherlands’ first win of the World Cup Qualifier with 40 balls to spare. Meanwhile, Takashinga Sports Club remains a house of horrors for USA, who have lost all three of their matches at the venue.USA lost another crucial toss and were sent in for the second match in a row as the Netherlands seamers exploited early moisture to put the batters in a big hole at 20 for 3 inside six overs. Sushant Modani fell for a third-ball duck edging Ryan Klein to first slip before Steven Taylor was bowled by a Logan van Beek inswinger that came back late to knock back off stump. After sucking Saiteja Mukkamalla into a drive on the previous ball for two, Klein got a pitched up delivery to sneak through the bat-pad gap on another attempted drive and bowl him for 10.The score was even worse with USA again missing captain Monank Patel due to illness and his stand-in Aaron Jones failing for the third match in a row, chopping on a Bas de Leede delivery for 8. Gajanand Singh got his third solid start of the tournament, but was unable to convert it beyond 33. The decision by Edwards to toss the ball to Vikramjit Singh for a spell of part-time medium pace worked as a leg side delivery was gloved to Edwards. Nisarg Patel could manage only 1 before an ill-fated slog against the turn from left-arm spinner Clayton Floyd swirled over mid-off for an easy catch to make it 88 for 6 in the 27th.Shayan Jahangir top-scored for the second match in a row, leading USA’s revival with 71 off 86 balls and he forged an 86-run seventh-wicket partnership with Jessy Singh. But Jessy fell in the 43rd to end the stand, driving a sharp low return catch to offspinner Aryan Dutt for 38. Jahangir picked out deep midwicket a few overs later, and USA never regained any momentum. Across the final eight overs of the innings, Netherlands conceded just 39 runs and only two boundaries as Dutt and the fast bowlers kept USA in check.Ali Khan picked up Vikramjit Singh in his opening spell•ICC via Getty Images

Defending 211, the USA quicks then produced an inspired display led by Ali Khan with the new ball on his return from a two-match suspension. He produced an athletic one-handed return catch to claim Vikramjit for 8 before pulling a piece of cloth tape out of his pocket and placing it over his mouth in celebration, a reference to the verbal jousting in a match against Jersey back in April that triggered his ban for the first two matches in the qualifier.Jessy replaced Ali in the attack after four overs and claimed two wickets with a gritty spell of medium pace. He trapped Max O’Dowd and Wesley Barresi with pitched up deliveries to win a pair of lbw decisions, making it 68 for 3. Saurabh Netravalkar returned for a second spell a short time later and induced a top edge from de Leede as Netherlands suddenly looked nervy. But Ali never came back after his opening spell, off the field for the remainder of play with a stomach bug, and Edwards picked on Nisarg’s left-arm spin with a series of sweeps to release the pressure. Nisarg finished with no wickets for 60 in 8.2 overs as Edwards quickly identified him as the weak link in USA’s attack upon his arrival in the 25th over. USA’s fielding, which has been porous throughout the tournament, was also exceptionally sloppy as the chase wore on with more than a half-dozen misfields along the ground that further dissipated any anxiety between Edwards and his partners.Teja Nidamanuru lofted Taylor’s offspin back over his head for a boundary to bring up a half-century but fell for 58 trying to sweep Nosthush Kenjige, ending a 72-run partnership. However, that was the last hiccup Netherlands would experience as van Beek provided adequate support for his captain with 12 not out while Edwards’ sweeping remained flawless until he dispatched Nisarg for the winning runs.

David Moyes makes personal scouting mission for £15k-a-week Everton target

Everton boss David Moyes recently traveled to watch an “ever-present” defender who has been enjoying a fine season in the Championship, according to a new report.

Exciting Everton summer ahead as stadium move draws nearer

Everton will be moving to a new stadium next season, bringing an end to their nearly 150-year stay at the historic Goodison Park.

Simply named Everton Stadium for now, the new venue will have a capacity of 52,888 fans, representing a significant increase in size compared to their former home. The stadium will feature state-of-the-art facilities, including modern hospitality suites, advanced lighting and sound systems, and enhanced fan experiences throughout.

ByAngus Sinclair Mar 29, 2025

Ahead of the move, a host of former Everton stars have recently been to check out the new ground in the flesh, including both Tim Howard and Wayne Rooney – both of whom had glowing reviews.

“I’m overwhelmed by the enormity of the sheer size of the stadium,” said Howard, who made over 400 appearances in goal for the Toffees between 2006 and 2016. “It’s so big. It almost just stands on top of you, which is incredible. The more blue the better as well.”

Rooney, meanwhile, said: “It’s brilliant. Really impressive. Here, it’s a big stadium, but it still feels close to the pitch. I think it’ll generate a good atmosphere. It’s the people, it’s the fans who create the atmosphere.”

Moyes watches Esteve as Toffees plan for big summer

On top of a brand new stadium, Everton will also likely have a host of new players next season, with manager Moyes keen to reinforce his squad in the summer after what’s been a difficult season. One of those players could be Burnley defender Maxime Esteve who, according to journalist Alan Nixon, the boss went to watch in action over the weekend.

Esteve helped Burnley to a 1-0 win over Bristol City on Saturday to boost the Clarets’ promotion hopes. Nixon reports that Moyes is targeting a potential summer move for Esteve and that the Scottish coach is likely to be given money by Everton’s hierarchy to do so.

Frenchman Esteve, 22, has been one of the Championship’s outstanding defenders this season, helping Burnley keep a record 28 clean sheets in just 39 games all while making just £15,000-a-week at Turf Moor.

Speaking to Football League World, former Leeds United man David Prutton recently said that he expects Esteve to be playing in the Premier League next season – whether Burnley are up there or not.

“What I have seen from Maxime Esteve is a maturity that belies his years, and shows a real consistency of performance,” he said. “He has been an ever-present since getting himself into the side, and that reliability at the very highest level is exactly what these players get paid a hell of a lot of money for.

“The real test in the Premier League is that standard of striker that you come up against and the standard of opposition. But given what I have seen of him this season – and you can’t get away from the fact that Burnley have kept 27 clean sheets which is extraordinary – it feels like Maxime Esteve is a Premier League player in the waiting.”

Brooke Guest stars with career-best 145* to keep Durham at bay

Wayne Madsen adds fifty as Derbyshire wicketkeeper plays vital hand

Derbyshire wicketkeeper Brooke Guest scored a career-best unbeaten 145 to frustrate Division Two leaders Durham in the LV=Insurance County Championship game at Derby.Guest backed-up his hundred against Sussex at Hove last week with another accomplished display to steer Derbyshire to 317 for 6 after Durham had put them in. Wayne Madsen made 62 and shared a third wicket stand with Guest of 118 in 32 overs before he fell to England fast bowler Matt Potts who took 2 for 57 from 20 overs.Durham’s decision to bowl first was probably based on the overhead conditions rather than the pitch which played well once the sun broke through. But while there was cloud cover, the openers were challenged by Potts and Ben Raine who saw Luis Reece dropped on 3 at second slip by David Bedingham. It did not prove costly as Reece, who along with Harry Came has signed a two-year contract extension, offered no shot to a ball from Raine that took out his off stump in the 11th over of the morning.Durham had to wait another 14 overs for their second success with Potts removing Came with a full length ball that straightened to bowl him for 16.Madsen almost went first ball, edging Potts just short of first slip and there was more frustration for the paceman when he squared Madsen up but the ball flew over the slip cordon.Potts had the chance to remove Madsen on 14 in the fourth over after lunch when an edge off Brydon Carse went low to him in the gully but the ball went through his hands. It was a miss Durham were made to pay for as Guest and Madsen played with increasing authority in bright sunshine.Guest drove Migael Pretorious through the covers for his ninth four to reach 50 from 103 balls before Madsen greeted Matt Parkinson by sweeping him for four. He came down the pitch to the legspinner and lifted him over mid-on for his eighth boundary to go to 50 off 73 balls and the runs continued to flow with the century stand coming up from 157 deliveries.Durham were desperate for a wicket and Potts provided it when he found some extra bounce to have Madsen caught in the gully by Alex Lees.Haider Ali survived a close lbw shout against Potts but announced his intentions in the last over before tea by launching Parkinson into the seats behind long-on. It completed a good session for the hosts with Guest 13 runs short of another hundred which he completed in the eighth over after the restart by sweeping Parkinson for his 15th four.Guest faced 181 balls and showed good judgement to bat his side into a promising position against the top side in the division. The stand with Haider was worth 70 when Durham got a fourth wicket in bizarre fashion. The Pakistan right-hander went to sweep Scott Borthwick, survived a confident lbw appeal but set off for a run that was never on and was stumped. That brought in Leus du Plooy who needed 21 to complete 1000 Championship runs for the season but made only 2 before he scooped Borthwick low to cover.Durham should have removed Guest on 122 when he edged Raine behind but Ollie Robinson could not hold on and he took advantage to pass his previous best score of 138 against Glamorgan last season.Raine claimed his second wicket when he bowled Anuj Dal but Guest made sure it was Derbyshire’s day.
