High-class bowling from Oliver Hannon-Dalby put Warwickshire in charge before Kent hit back on a wicket-strewn opening day in the LV=Insurance County Championship at Edgbaston. In a crucial game, with both teams struggling this season, Warwickshire prepared a green wicket to expedite a result. They then won the toss and their seamers exploited the conditions to bowl Kent out for 165. Only Jordan Cox passed 40 as Hannon-Dalby took 6 for 40 and Henry Brookes 3 for 56.Warwickshire struggled in turn and closed on 155 for 6, having leaned squarely on Sam Hain. Navdeep Saini, the Indian seamer, had an eventful first bowl for Kent, his spell of 10-2-59-3 including some seriously quick away-cutters and 13 no-balls.Hannon-Dalby was magnificent. As leader of a severely-depleted seam attack – Nathan McAndrew the latest withdrawal after he went down with illness – the pressure was firmly on the Yorkshireman to exploit the conditions. He rose to the challenge with an opening spell of 7-4-15-5.Related

On potentially the hottest day ever in England, Warwickshire’s decision to bat drew an incredulous reaction from their fans on social media -but those fans hadn’t seen the pitch. Hannon-Dalby struck third ball when Ben Compton nicked to wicketkeeper Michael Burgess and, after Kent advanced to 28 for 1, added two more wickets in four balls: Daniel Bell-Drummond fell lbw and Joe Denly sliced a loose drive to second slip.Hannon-Dalby won two more lbws: Jack Leaning and Zak Crawley who eked out 17 in 53 minutes then fell, hit on the back leg, offering no shot. Cox and Sam Billings added 72 in 20 overs before Hannon-Dalby returned to have the former caught behind. After Billings edged Brookes, Matt Henry plumped for a spot of gung-ho. He socked three fours and three sixes in a merry 34 off 23 balls before slogging Brookes to deep midwicket where sub fielder Kobe Herft took a superb catch.Saini steered Brookes to second slip and Matt Quinn joined the list of Kent batsmen whose quixotic aggression contributed to their downfall when he chipped Danny Briggs to mid-off.Kent hit back hard with three wickets in the first ten overs as Dom Sibley, Alex Davies and Chris Benjamin edged into the cordon off Matt Milnes, Henry and Saini respectively.Hain moved fluently to a 64-ball half-century and added 90 in 28 overs with Will Rhodes before Kent struck three times in 17 balls. Rhodes lifted Milnes to point and Dan Mousley and Burgess edged Saini behind before Hain and Briggs gritted through the last 13 overs to leave their side ascendant – just.

After Agbadou: Wolves chasing PL star who could make Ait-Nouri even better

Wolverhampton Wanderers had enjoyed an exceptional start to life under new boss Vitor Pereira in the Premier League, up until Nuno Espirito Santo’s Nottingham Forest travelled to Molineux to sour the high spirits.

Indeed, the high-flying away side convincingly put the Old Gold to the sword in a 3-0 defeat, leaving Wolves precariously near the drop zone but just outside of it on goal difference.

Wolverhampton Wanderers managerVitorPereirareacts after the match

Pereira will want his side to be a lot sterner in defence in matches to come, having kept a clean sheet during his debut match away at Leicester City, only to then be turned over in worrying fashion to start 2025.

Therefore, new defensive additions are firmly on the Portuguese manager’s mind, with a number of deals reportedly in the works.

Wolves looking at new centre-back

As per a report by Daily Mail Online, Wolves are now in the hunt for reserve Chelsea defender Renato Veiga as another option to improve their numbers at the back.

AFC Bournemouth are also reportedly sniffing around from the Premier League, with Veiga perhaps fancying a move away already from Stamford Bridge due to limited game-time, despite only joining last summer.

This wouldn’t be the only new possible recruit at Wolves when it comes to defensive additions, with a deal edging ever closer for Emmanuel Agbadou to join the ranks from Rennes, alongside this fresh news that the ex-Basel man could soon join him in through the door.

After all, Pereira’s side do hold the unwanted tag of being the leakiest defence in the top flight this season, with 45 goals in total leaked, meaning fresh new improvements might well see more resolute displays moving forward.

Alongside helping out at the back, the potential acquisition of the Blues youngster could give Rayan Ait-Nouri more freedom to attack down the left, with Veiga a left-sided defender by nature who will likely sit back whilst the Algerian excels roaming forward.

What Veiga could offer Wolves

The Portuguese target would make a name for himself as a battling presence defensively playing for Basel back in the Swiss Super League, with a stunning seven ball recoveries averaged per league clash during his standout 2023/24 campaign, leading to Chelsea forking out £12m to land the exciting defender.

Of course, his opportunities in the main team in the Premier League under Enzo Maresca have been limited due to the breadth of options at the Italian’s disposal, but when he has started for his new side in the Europa Conference League, he has impressed.

His showing versus Astana shows off an adaptability in Veiga’s game that will make him an even more attractive buy for Wolves, with a goal picked up in the Conference League when playing down the channels, away from strictly being a defensive option.

Of course – in the Old Gold’s current predicament – they would like Veiga to be more of an option they can throw into the mix as one of three centre-backs, which he can also do with the majority of his appearances for Basel either coming in defensive midfield or in a more traditional centre-back position.

Playing the new potential Wolves buy here would allow Ait Nouri to prosper further up the pitch, with his link-up play often a joy to watch when he’s at full pelt, leading to him amassing eight goal contributions this season in league action from just 19 games.

Last match, instead of causing Forest problems in this capacity, Ait Nouri was selected to play as one of three centre-backs by Pereira, culminating in Wolves drawing blanks all night long.

As such, having an addition like Veiga in the building could allow the Algerian to have the freedom to bomb on down the left flank in his preferred wing-back role, safe in the knowledge that he has quality cover behind him in the form of the current Chelsea man.

Once referred to as a “hidden gem” by football data analyst Ben Mattinson, Veiga will hope a move this January can make him become a leading man for whatever side takes him on, with Pereira hopeful this addition can provide more defensive solidity for his team during testing times.

He’d be better than Kvaratskhelia: Liverpool looking at "special" £85m ace

Liverpool’s so-called circumspection in the transfer market has been more than offset by sustained success under FSG’s guidance across the past decade or so.

Arne Slot’s start to life as Jurgen Klopp’s successor has been a remarkable thing, more so when you consider the summer spending presented only Federico Chiesa as the sole first-team signing, a wonderful talent but discarded by money-troubled Juventus ahead of the final year of his contract.

Liverpool managerArneSlot

It was an eye-catching buy, something that Liverpool have cultivated something of a reputation for across so many years of prize-winning sustainability. Football is fickle and its legion of supporters are too, but Liverpool have done alright over these past years, and may yet crown a new chapter with a Premier League title, six points clear with a game in hand.

Few foresaw this, however, there’s a German sat in a reclining chair somewhere in a Red Bull, wry smile on his face, who always knew that the time was right to relinquish his power and usher in someone new.

Liverpool may well win the Premier League and perhaps another competition too, but if the Reds wish to stay ahead of their fierce rivals over the coming years, it feels paramount that signings are made this year.

There is a willingness to fork out funds on the right target. Liverpool, after all, held a genuine interest in Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Why Liverpool wanted to sign Kvaratskhelia

At the start of January, Liverpool made their interest in Kvaratskhelia known. Rumours were starting to surface of the Georgian’s potential departure from Napoli.

Kvaratskhelia

While Paris Saint-Germain were in the driving seat after holding early talks, Anfield’s sporting director Richard Hughes was attentive and, according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, ready to pounce.

Fledgling intrigue failed to materialise into something concrete, with PSG advancing discussions and Liverpool opting against lodging an official bid. The 23-year-old is now formally Parisien property.

It does show that Liverpool would be willing to spend big on a left-sided forward, however, and shines a light on Luis Diaz’s contract situation: the Colombia international, 28, is contracted until 2028 but has long-standing interest from Barcelona.

Liverpool aren’t naive and have already honed their sights on a different target on the wing.

Liverpool monitoring rising talent

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool have been scouting Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Gittens, though Chelsea are also interested and have already made a formal enquiry.

Gittens might only be 20 but he’s already become a major player for the Yellow Wall and has excelled both in the Bundesliga and the Champions League.

Liverpool would need to fork out an incredible €100m (translating to about £85m) figure to bring Gittens to Merseyside, but if Diaz, for example, is signed by Barcelona, this could be a road worth pursuing.

What Jamie Gittens would bring to Anfield

Gittens might only be in the maiden stage of his career but he’s already proving himself as an important member of a talented Dortmund side, racking up 16 goals and 14 assists across 84 professional appearances for BVB, joining them after leaving the famed Manchester City academy.

With fleet feet, nifty skills and composure during vital moments, Gittens is undoubtedly made for Premier League football, his exciting performances over in Germany translatable.

Borussia Dortmund's Jamie Bynoe-Gittens in action

Sky Sports’ Dougie Critchley has even proclaimed Gittens to be “England’s best left winger in 2024/25” after his goal-heavy success under Nuru Sahin’s wing this season.

As per FBref, Gittens ranks among the top 7% of positional peers in the German top flight this season for goals scored while also ranking among the top 1% for progressive carries and successful take-ons per 90, highlighting not only his aptitude in front of goal but also his athletic qualities that could align neatly with Slot’s style.

Liverpool might have missed out on one of the world’s foremost wide forwards in Kvaratskhelia, but Gittens would be an able alternative and, perhaps, one with the capacity to eclipse the Georgia superstar down the line.

Curiously, Gittens is already proving himself to be a clinical striker in front of goal, converting seven of his 11 big chances in Germany this term. Kvaratskhelia is also sharp in the final third, bagging five of seven in Serie A before jetting off to France.

However, you could actually make a compelling argument for Gittens being the more complete player from an attacking standpoint, for the English talent outranks Kvaratskhelia when considering combative and ball-carrying metrics. He might not be quite so heavy with his creative output, but Gittens has actually racked up as many assists as the new PSG recruit in respective leagues this year.

And anyway, the £49k-per-week prospect racked up eight assists last season despite only starting 18 matches across all competitions for Dortmund.

Hailed for one “special” Champions League performance by Romano, Gittens has the world at his feet and could become a major player at Liverpool.

It might actually be beneficial for his development to make the move to Anfield now and learn under the wing of superstars Diaz and Cody Gakpo, always with his sights set on a moveless starting berth down the line.

He’s already outperforming Kvaratskhelia in some interesting metrics and could ascend to the next level in Slot’s thriving system.

Ben Duckett, Haseeb Hameed break records – and Derbyshire spirits

Notts batters fill their boots as East Midlands rivals toil in the heat

David Hopps19-Jul-2022

Ben Duckett works off the pads•Getty Images

It was the hottest day in the UK’s history, but county cricket decided to brazen it out. Old salts recalled burning throats in the dry heat of Kimberley or the privations of Colombo in April with humidity at its highest. Many were just harmlessly telling old tales. Others felt it a matter of honour: climate breakdown is here and now, but they were still in denial, unable to comprehend, staring it down. The tragedy is that unless the world awakes, they won’t be able to stare it down for much longer. The hottest day ever experienced in Derbyshire was a couple of degrees below the UK record of 40.3C being set elsewhere, but 38C was enervating enough, thank you, certainly as far as the county’s bowling attack was concerned. They took one wicket all day on a parched surface and the 439 runs they conceded included an unfinished record stand for Nottinghamshire against Derbyshire – 393 in 81 overs by Ben Duckett (237* from 263 balls) and Haseeb Hameed (165* from 280). Once the new ball had softened, it felt utterly predictable. They have already achieved Nottinghamshire’s highest stand for any wicket against Derbyshire, inficting pain upon their East Midlands rivals, beating the 372 between Kevin Pietersen and John Morris at Derby in 2001.There were other records too, including the previous highest second wicket stand by anybody against Derbyshire of 344 by Jack Devey and Septimus Kinneir for Warwickshire at Edgbaston in 1900. Jack Devey: better known as an Aston Villa forward during a golden era; Septimus Kinneir: the seventh of 13 children (there’s a clue in the name), who was taken on a tour of Australia for the first time at 38.There is always an element of regret if a really old record falls; it can feel like an assault on cricket history, a kicking of gravestones. But the point of youth is to write their own history. And one of Nottinghamshire’s most famous records was also only five runs away when the first day came to a footsore close – 398 by Arthur Shrewsbury and Billy Gunn, a Notts second-wicket affair, made against Sussex, back in 1890.Related

“Give me Arthur,” WG Grace is famously meant to have said when asked which batter of that time he would most like to have alongside him. Gunn was also a football forward for both Nottingham clubs and a talented sprinter, but his restrained approach could drive opponents to distraction. Duckett and Hameed, by contrast, have felt England rejection, but they were in impeccable form, Haseeb driving as blissfully as at any time in his career; Duckett a pocket-sized destroyer of anything below par.Duckett felt their experience on the sub continent was a boon. “It was tough in that heat,” he said. “I was dropped a couple of times and if you catch those it’s a different day. There was enough in there this morning but in that heat we knew if we could get them into their second, third, fourth spells it would get a lot easier. Thankfully me and Haseeb have both played in the sub continent which probably helps. Haseeb is very calm, he’s kind of in his own bubble when he bats so there was minimal talk, we both know what we’re going to do. I’ve never scored that freely for a day and I think to do it in 40 degree heat makes me feel very proud. It’s been a pretty special day.”Derbyshire rued dropping Duckett twice – slip catches by Ben Aitchison, a doddle off Sam Conners on 24, and again by Wayne Madsen off Luis Reece on 71, Madsen only able to parry a sharp head-high chance. Hameed was reprieved on 74 when he pulled Conners to deep square leg where Harry Came misjudged the flight of the ball which dropped over his head and went for four.Derbyshire’s head coach, Mickey Arthur, had dismissed suggestions ahead of the match that it was too hot for cricket. “There’s an England Lions tour to Sri Lanka next year. If you think this is hot, wait until you see what Sri Lanka’s going to dish up for you,” he said. “Our boys have to be able to handle the conditions.”Sri Lanka’s demands are undeniable. 30 years ago – – Tim Munton managed only three overs in Colombo on an England A tour before he left the field hallucinating, complaining he was seeing pink elephants and needed to be put on a drip, although such privations in Sri Lanka are due as much to humidity as temperature. The one consolation of this Derby heat was that humidity levels were relatively low. Most spectators had stayed away, so much so that the club could have passed round a tube of Factor 30 and still had some to spare. There is only one covered area at Derby, unofficially termed the East Midlands Demolition Stand on accounts of an advertising hoarding. It would not be a good time to knock it down.Haseeb Hameed hits down the ground•Getty Images

If Arthur’s words were intended as a motivational speech, his hopes that Derbyshire’s attack would handle the conditions were not realised. As in the country at large, climate change is not just about resilience, it is about adaptation and English professional cricket is not exactly blessed by high-class spinners for days like these. A Blast quarter-final thrashing against Somerset at Taunton followed by this – they are in the most draining phase of the summer. “Get changed and go home,” was how Dave Fletcher, the BBC Radio Derby commentator, concluded his observations on the day and it was an apt summation.Duckett registered his highest score for Nottinghamshire, although he still has some way to go to beat his first-class best of 282 – in other words, probably about 20 past 12 on Tuesday. Hameed achieved new career-heights – in his previous 10 hundreds, he had never made more than 122. Duckett greedily fed upon Derbyshire with the knowledge that here was an opportunity not to be wasted; Hameed, who can rarely have batted in silkier fashion, just looked happy to be playing with such freedom.Derbyshire’s attack all struggled in the blistering heat, the outfield lightening by the hour. Reece held up as well as anybody, arms pinking. George Scrimshaw, whose pace is his main attribute, was lightly used. Aitchison was repeatedly driven; Dal was not and he did as well as anyone. Came purveyed a bit of offspin ahead of the second new ball, his first bowl in senior cricket.Assumptions were that batting sides would dominate around the country, but only Nottinghamshire entirely fulfilled expectations. As many as 45 wickets fell in seven matches around the country, even though two grounds – Cheltenham and Northampton – chose to finish 90 minutes early and make up lost time on subsequent days. In Derby, as they left the field for the final time at Cheltenham, there was still a full session to play. Here, more than anywhere, there was pain behind the eyes.

Gloucestershire 317 and 135 for 5 (Harris 62) trail Northamptonshire 479 (Rickelton 95, Procter 78, Sales 71, Young 61, Gohar 5-134) by 27 runsJames Sales hit a career-best 71 to help Northamptonshire build a winning position on the third day of the LV= Insurance County Championship match with Gloucestershire at Cheltenham College.Unbeaten on 21 overnight, the 19-year-old shared a key ninth-wicket stand of 78 with Ben Sanderson as the visitors extended their first innings score from an overnight 353 for seven to 479 all out, a lead of 162.Left-arm spinner Zafar Gohar finished with 5 for 134. But his efforts looked to be in vain as Gloucestershire slipped to 135 for five in their second innings, still 27 behind, by the time bad light ended play 15 overs early.Despite a defiant 62 from Marcus Harris, the hosts were relieved when the action was curtailed, Tom Taylor having claimed two of the wickets on a wearing pitch.Trailing by 36 runs at the start of the day, Gloucestershire needed to back their bowlers with tight fielding to restrict the deficit to a manageable level.Instead, they dropped Sales twice when he had added only a single to his overnight score, David Payne the unlucky bowler on both occasions. First Harris spilled a chance two-handed to his right at gully. Then Ollie Price failed to capitalise on an edge to second slip.Despite Zafar’s four wickets on day two, Gloucestershire bowled seam for the first 11 overs, only introducing their specialist spinner after 30 runs had been added. Three runs later he made the breakthrough, Simon Kerrigan, on 14, driving a catch to extra cover.Sales moved to fifty with a pulled four off Zafar, having faced 121 balls and hit 6 fours. Sanderson then extended the lead to three figures before the pair took 12 off the only over of the innings bowled by Gloucestershire captain Graeme van Buuren.By lunch, Northants had reached 454 for eight, having added 101 in the morning session. Sales’ vital contribution ended when he was unlucky to edge a leg side delivery from Zak Chappell through to James Bracey, whose wicketkeeping throughout the innings was exemplary.A couple of sixes by last man Jack White off Zafar added to Gloucestershire’s frustration and Sanderson was only four short of his career best score when spooning a catch to cover off Chappell. The home side had progressed their second innings to 37 when Chris Dent departed for 16 in careless fashion, chipping a catch to short mid-wicket off Taylor.Ollie Price was caught behind off White for a seven-ball duck and at 42 for two, Gloucestershire trailed by 116.Harris went on the counter-attack, lofting Kerrigan for two sixes over wide long-on as he and Miles Hammond took the total to 82 for 2 by tea in poor light. With only a run added, Taylor beat Hammond’s defensive shot and trapped him lbw. Harris was beaten by successive balls from Sanderson, but then took a single off him to reach a 67-ball half-century, with two sixes and five fours.Gloucestershire’s hopes of saving the game were dealt a severe blow when Harris advanced down the pitch to Kerrigan and was bowled between bat and pad.James Bracey followed for 23, bowled by offspinner Rob Keogh’s first delivery of the innings, a full one which crept under the bat, and the hosts were in dire trouble at 132 for five.
