Joe Root praises England progress as Kraigg Brathwaite takes pride in resilience

Captain impressed by fight shown on tough pitch as West Indies shut door in emphatic style

Joe Root praised both the fighting qualities of his England team, and the resilience shown by West Indies – in particular their indefatigable captain, Kraigg Brathwaite – as the second Test in Barbados finished in stalemate on the fifth and final evening. After a feisty declaration push in the morning session, led by another sparky cameo of 41 from 39 balls from Dan Lawrence, England briefly held out hopes of bowling West Indies out as they slipped to 65 for 3 at tea, in pursuit of a nominal target of 282.However, Brathwaite picked up where he had left off in his first-innings 160 with another unyielding innings of 56 not out from 184 balls. In so doing, he finished the match with a tally of 216 runs from 673 balls – eclipsing the 582 balls that Brian Lara faced in making 400 not out in 2004 as the longest any West Indian has ever spent at the crease in a single Test match.”It was annoying how good he was,” Root said. “He played brilliantly in both innings and didn’t give us many opportunities. He ground us down. He’s an ideal player for a pitch like that. He takes it deep time and time again. He had a clear game-plan and stuck to it very well. It’s frustrating but there’s a lot of respect for the way he went about it.”It did feel like a new-ball wicket, you needed to really make an impact while the ball was harder, but after three brilliant breakthroughs, we unfortunately couldn’t quite kick on,” Root added. “Credit to West Indies, they fought very hard in two brilliant Test matches, and it should be a brilliant final one of the series.”Brathwaite, the player of the match, admitted he had not been aware of the scale of his achievement until he returned to the West Indies dressing-room at the end of the match, having batted for a total of 15 hours and 45 minutes across his two innings, and been on the field of play for all but 21 overs.”I heard it when I went in, that’s amazing to hear,” he said. “Obviously I’ve put in a lot of work over the years, and to do it at home is a quite pleasant feeling, especially having family here, so I’m very happy and thankful.”However, when asked if West Indies might have taken a more proactive approach to their first innings, having kept England in the field for 187.5 overs, Brathwaite insisted that his team was focused on “learning on the job”, having not won a Test in ten attempts since February 2021, and that they would not necessarily look to up their tempo for next week’s series decider in Grenada.Kraigg Brathwaite extended his marathon contribution with the bat•AFP/Getty Images

“It was good that, after England put up 500, we as a team could fight and put 400 back,” Brathwaite said. “That’s the attitude we want, and the fans want to see. Once you continuously have the right attitude, our Test [results] will go up.”In periods we could [be more attacking], but spending time at the crease and batting through three new balls is a great start for us. We need to just learn as quick as possible on the job, and improve at different periods of the game.”Much the same could be said for England, who have themselves won just one Test out of their last 16. However, Root believes that the team has laid down a series of markers in the last two matches, and singled out Lawrence – who starred with the bat in both innings, as well as with the ball and in the field – as a particular example of the strides the team has made.”I think he’s been wonderful,” Root said. “One of the most pleasing things is how selfless he’s been throughout this series. He’s always tried to put the team first – again this morning, really making sure we tried to get as many as we could as quickly as we could, to give ourselves the best chance taking 10 wickets this afternoon.”England have now made five centuries in the series, with Root making his second of the series in Barbados alongside Ben Stokes’ first for 18 months. Lawrence, however, might have added three figures of his own in this match, had he not had a rush of blood in the final over of the first day, when he holed out to cover for 91.”I don’t think it will be long if he keeps playing like that, that’s for sure,” Root said. “He’s obviously a very talented player. He seems to be growing in confidence all the time, and the more and more he puts himself in those positions, I’m sure it won’t be long.”It was just really pleasing to see us make a substantial first-innings total for the first time in a long time,” Root added, after England had declared on 507 for 9. “So long may that continue. The guys have gained a lot of confidence from it and hopefully we can replicate it again, and again, and again.”Root also had a word of praise for England’s two debutant seamers, Matt Fisher and Saqib Mahmood, who stuck to their tasks well across both innings. In the first, Fisher had the euphoria of a wicket with his second ball when John Campbell edged to the keeper, and though Mahmood missed out on his moment due to a costly no-ball, he atoned with four in the match, including two in the second innings to lift England’s victory hopes.Related

“I think they were brilliant,” Root said. “The two wickets that we’ve played on have not been the most receptive for seam bowlers, but the two lads have shown great commitment, great dedication, great skill levels – and a different kind of skill level to what they are used to in England, to hold a game and create pressure. It was great to see the delight on their faces when they both picked those first wickets up.”The unresponsive nature of the surfaces could tempt England into a fourth debutant of the series, if the legspinner Matt Parkinson comes into the side in Grenada. Root, however, insisted that their incumbent spinner, Jack Leach, had done everything asked of him in ploughing through for the remarkable match figures of 94.5-40-154-5, the heaviest workload by an England bowler in 60 years.”We’ll have to see what kind of wicket we get, and weigh what we think is the best way to take 20 wickets,” Root said. “But it’s really pleasing to see Jack play the way he has. You can see how much he’s enjoying himself out there, bowling with great control, looking very threatening all the time. And it’s great to see him really start to find his feet and look very comfortable at this level.”After consecutive declarations, England have twice run out of overs in which to turn the screw on West Indies. And Root conceded he “could have been braver” about the equation he left in Barbados, of 282 runs in 65 overs.”It’s always a tricky one isn’t it?” he said. “You’re always trying to weigh that up, but I think with how small this ground is, and how strong the wind was, you don’t want to make it too close. It’s easy to look back in hindsight and say, you know, could we have pulled out 10 overs earlier, but in the end, would it have made much difference?”

Estava no lugar errado, ainda fora do estádio.

Delegação do São Paulo deixando o estádio.

West Ham have put "quick" £17.5m player up for sale after recall decision

West Ham United are ready to entertain buyers for a speedy and direct player, as manager Julen Lopetegui attempts to raise January funds and strengthen his squad in key areas.

Julen Lopetegui reveals transfer talks with David Sullivan

Speaking to the press, Lopetegui shared that he’s held conversations with West Ham chairman David Sullivan over plans for the looming winter window.

Technical director Tim Steidten is under pressure at West Ham, following a series of lacklustre investments over the summer window, which saw the club spend over £120 million on new signings – including flop striker Niclas Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund.

West Ham are believed to be in the market for a new centre-forward next month, but must first raise funds through player sales, as Lopetegui sits down for talks with Sullivan to discuss the best steps heading into January.

“The talks I have with David I am not going to tell you, but we talk a lot about the team,” said Lopetegui on his meetings with Sullivan.

“About the squad and about the next challenge, the only truth I believe is to be focused on the next match. After, we will see what happens.”

While Lopetegui refused to go into too much detail on West Ham’s transfer plans, reports suggest that Real Sociedad star Brais Mendez is a key target for West Ham alongside their pursuit of a new number nine.

It has also been reported that West Ham are serious contenders to sign Evan Ferguson on loan from Brighton, so there are rumoured targets on the agenda at Rush Green, but their need to sell after a summer of high expenditure means it could be a tricky one to navigate.

There are a number of squad members who could be forfeited in an attempt to bolster Lopetegui’s transfer kitty, and one of them is now winger Maxwel Cornet.

West Ham put Maxwel Cornet up for sale after Southampton re-call decision

According to The Athletic, Cornet will be recalled from his loan spell at Southampton, with the Ivorian barely making any matchday squads recently and appearing surplus-to-requirement at St. Mary’s.

West Ham are set to put Cornet up for sale once he returns to London, two and a half years after his £17.5 million move from Burnley, and the east Londoners could be hoping to recoup at least some of that fee in an attempt to raise cash.

Maxwel Cornet for Southampton.

The 28-year-old was a star player for Burnley in the 2021/2022 season, finishing that Premier League campaign as their top scorer with nine league goals, but it appears he’s failing to rediscover that form behind the scenes.

“Cornet is quick and direct. He could help them get behind,” said the late Kevin Campbell about Cornet back in 2022 (Football Insider).

“Cornet is a runner. He gets in behind and stretches teams. I think that is essential. He is a handful off the bench.”

Sussex sign Mason Crane on month-long loan

Sussex have signed Mason Crane, the one-cap England legspinner, on a month’s loan to help address their ongoing injury crisis.Sussex won the wooden spoon last season and are rock-bottom of Division Two after two rounds of the 2022 season, following a draw and two defeats. They have seven bowlers unavailable for their fixture against Durham at Hove this week, including Ollie Robinson, who has been ruled out after undergoing dental treatment following a recent infection.Steven Finn, meanwhile, is unavailable due to a knee inflammation, while Jack Carson (stress fracture), Jofra Archer (elbow), Fynn Hudson-Prentice (stress fracture), George Garton (long Covid) and Dan Ibrahim (shoulder) all remain unavailable.”We’ve got seven frontline bowlers out. It’s frustrating for myself, trying to get a side together,” Ian Salisbury, Sussex’s head coach, told BBC Radio Sussex last week. “He [Robinson] is an ECB-contracted player but obviously that’s out of our hands. That’s just the way it is.”As a result of their availability crisis, Sussex have signed Crane on a month’s loan from Hampshire, as well as Essex seamer Aaron Beard for the same period of time.”I have worked with both Mason and Aaron when I coached them for England U-17s and U-19s, so I know their qualities as people and cricketers,” Salisbury said. “I’d like to say thank you to Essex and Anthony McGrath who contacted me to let me know Aaron could be of help, and the same to Hampshire. I am looking forward to working with both of them again and I know they will fit in easily with the group.”Essex will also be without Dan Lawrence, who has a hamstring injury, and Adam Rossington, who is unavailable due to the conditions of his loan, during their fixture against Northamptonshire this week.”The move will provide Aaron with some valuable first-team cricket, which has been hard to come by so far this season due to the wealth of talent we have had available for selection,” McGrath said. “We wish Aaron well and I’m sure he will excel during his short red-ball stint at Hove before returning for the Vitality Blast competition.”Crane, meanwhile, went wicketless in his only appearance of the season to date against Kent at Canterbury. He made his Test debut for England in Sydney in 2018 but has struggled for opportunities since.”This loan provides Mason with an opportunity to play first-class cricket,” Giles White, Hampshire’s director of cricket, said. “He was unfortunate to miss out on selection here but we are looking forward to seeing how he performs for Sussex.”

Tottenham now holding internal talks over signing £202k-p/w ace in January

Tottenham Hotspur are now holding internal talks over landing a new forward for Ange Postecoglou this January as they look to bolster their ranks in hopes of an improved second half of the Premier League campaign.

Tottenham lose again

After illness and injuries ransacked the Tottenham squad, the Lilywhites fell to another home Premier League defeat as Newcastle edged past them 2-1.

Despite an early Spurs goal from Dominic Solanke, goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon proved enough for Eddie Howe’s side to escape north London with all three points, and condemn Tottenham to their 10th league loss in just 20 games.

Timo Werner in action for Tottenham

Without key men across the pitch, Postecoglou’s side have already moved to sign a new goalkeeper this transfer window and are likely to strengthen further and are thought to be targeting a defender and a forward this window.

Both Richarlison and Wilson Odobert have been sidelined for much of the season, leaving Postecoglou low on options in attack, something that has resulted in Timo Werner continuing to start despite a public dressing down from the Spurs boss.

Postecoglou dubbed his performances “not acceptable” after replacing him at half-time in the 1-1 Europa League draw at Rangers just under a month ago, but the German has since featured in every game whether as a substitute or a starter.

It is clear that fresh blood is needed in attack, with Heung-Min Son having seen his form drop off a cliff so far this campaign and Dejan Kulusevski preferred in central areas by the Tottenham boss. Now, discussions have taken place over a new potential addition to their frontline.

Tottenham hold internal talks over attacker

That is according to Ben Jacobs, who reports that Tottenham have held internal talks over a move to sign PSG talent Randal Kolo Muani this January after the player’s camp contacted Spurs last month.

Unwanted by the French champions, it had previously been reported that Kolo Muani had offered himself to the Lilywhites, but now it appears that this is an option Spurs are taking seriously.

France'sRandalKoloMuanireacts

Jacobs claims that the French international is “expected to leave PSG in January” and that “several clubs across Europe are interested.” One of those is Postecoglou’s side, who have “discussed” a deal internally, though it is stressed that they are “yet to make an approach”.

It is added that PSG are “open to a loan, but ideally with an obligation”, while the “French champions prefer a permanent exit”, something that seems highly unlikely in January given the price likely needed to sell him plus his hefty £202,000 a week wages in the French capital.

Fewer touches than Werner: Ange must sell 3/10 Spurs flop who won 0 duels

Tottenham fell to another Premier League defeat against Newcastle United.

Though things have not worked out for Kolo Muani since his big-money move to PSG from Eintracht Frankfurt, he has remained a key part of the French national team and is highly regarded by his teammates.

Indeed, former Arsenal midfielder Matteo Guendouzi put him among the best forwards in Europe, explaining that “Randal has the qualities. A confident Randal is one of the best strikers in Europe. I hope he gets a lot more playing time because he will help them a lot more.”

Could Tottenham be the side to provide that confidence, and reap the rewards?

Karan's 93* puts Uttar Pradesh in semi-finals after Saurabh's bowling heroics

Vyshak’s four-wicket haul put Karnataka on top before Karan and Prince Yadav steered UP home with an unbroken stand of 99

Uttar Pradesh created history by beating Karnataka for the first time in the Ranji Trophy, as captain Karan Sharma led from the front with an unbeaten 93 in their successful chase of 213. Karan’s undefeated stand of 99 for the sixth wicket with Prince Yadav, who scored an unbeaten 33, ensured UP got over the early hiccups in their chase.Having come to the crease after medium-pacer Vijaykumar Vyshak had dismissed both openers to reduce UP to 28 for 2, Karan and Priyam Garg added 59 for the third wicket. Garg contributed an entertaining 52 off 60 balls, including six fours and two sixes. Garg, Rinku Singh and Dhruv Jurel then all fell in the space of 13 overs to leave UP 114 for 5, with K Gowtham and Vidwath Kaverappa also getting among the wickets. But Karnataka would not make any more breakthroughs thereafter, as Karan and Prince stood firm, ensuring UP completed a memorable win against the tournament favourites. Karan’s innings spanned 163 balls, and contained 13 fours and a six.The match had looked like heading for an intriguing finish after Karnataka grabbed a 98-run first-innings lead on the second day, bowling UP out for 155 in response to their score of 253, but the home side then folded for 114 in their second innings.Left-arm spinner Saurabh Kumar set the tone for UP’s win by claiming 4 for 73 in Karnataka’s first innings, including the wickets of top-scorer R Samarth, and then captain Manish Pandey and S Sharath off back-to-back balls.Karnataka fought back through a combined effort from their bowling unit, with seamer Ronit More grabbing 3 for 47. However, UP’s last-wicket pair of Shivam Mavi and Ankit Rajpoot frustrated the opposition bowlers by adding 44, the highest stand in their innings. The game continued to chug along at rapid pace, as Karnataka crumbled in their second innings, losing eight wickets for 47 runs after being 67 for 2 at one stage. Once again, Saurabh led the way with three wickets. None of Karnataka’s experienced trio of Mayank Agarwal, Karun Nair and Pandey managed to pass 30 in either innings.
