Chelsea academy star was meant to be Hazard 2.0, now he’s unemployed at 28

Chelsea have become known over the years for their Cobham Academy, which has produced a catalogue of elite-level talents who have either made a huge impact on the first team or made the club a huge profit.

Within Enzo Maresca’s current squad, their academy success can be seen in the form of defender Levi Colwill, who has enjoyed a huge rise in recent years.

The 21-year-old has spent various years out on loan, before becoming a crucial player under the Italian in 2024/25, missing just one minute of Premier League action so far this campaign.

As a result of his excellent progress, he’s become a regular in the England setup under Lee Carsley in recent months, being named in all three squads during the ongoing season.

There’s no denying that centre-back wouldn’t be at the current performance level if it wasn’t for his successful loan spells elsewhere, with his first leap in England’s top-flight coming in 2022/23.

Chelsea’s transfer window in the summer of 2022

Colwill left on a season-long loan to join Brighton and Hove Albion after his previous season on loan at Huddersfield Town the year prior, as they lost in the play-off final against Nottingham Forest.

Jake Clarke-Salter is another defender who had huge expectations on his shoulders after coming through the academy, but ultimately he never made the impact many expected him to as a youngster.

Crystal Palace linked Jake Clarke-Salter in action for QPR.

The now 27-year-old only featured twice for his boyhood club, before leaving on a free transfer in the summer of 2022, joining Championship outfit Queens Park Rangers at the end of his contract.

The aforementioned window allowed for the departures of two high-earning players who, unfortunately, were unable to match the expectations many placed on their shoulders upon their respective moves to Stamford Bridge.

Ross Barkley left after a three-and-a-half year stint in West London, with Danny Drinkwater spending five years at the Blues after joining in a £35m deal from Leicester City after their Premier League triumph back in 2015/16.

However, such a window also saw the departure of a talent who many expected to become a top-level star but was unable to make such an impact due to constant injury troubles.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

The former Chelsea star who’s now unemployed at 28

Belgian winger Charly Musonda joined Chelsea as a 15-year-old back in the summer of 2012, the same window as compatriot Eden Hazard, but the pair couldn’t have developed further apart after their respective spells at the Bridge.

The former Lille ace spent seven years in the capital, racking up over 350 appearances and scoring over 100 goals before leaving to join Real Madrid for £130m in the summer of 2019.

However, the same can’t be said for Musonda, who was once seen as a generational talent given his time in the academy but was unfortunately unable to replicate such a feat in the first team.

Sadly, the attacker would only feature seven times, scoring just a solitary goal against Nottingham Forest back in the Carabao Cup back in September 2017.

Injuries played a huge part in his lack of game time, being sent on various stints to Vitesse and Celtic before eventually being released by the Blues in the summer of 2022 as a 25-year-old.

Musonda has since had short stints at Spanish side Levante, whilst also featuring for Cypriot outfit Anorthosis during the 2023/24 campaign, before subsequently being released back in September.

To this day, the now 28-year-old remains a free agent, with his career in Europe all but over given his decline over the past couple of years – such a sad sight to see given his promise as a youngster.

He’s just another case of a youngster who’s been unable to match his potential during his academy days, with the pressure placed on his shoulders as a teenager undoubtedly playing a huge part in his lack of development.

Sarah Taylor joins Manchester Originals as men's assistant coach

Former England star continues burgeoning coaching career with Hundred appointment

Sarah Taylor, the former England wicketkeeper, says that more female coaches would “benefit the game as a whole”, after joining Manchester Originals as an assistant coach for this year’s Men’s Hundred.Taylor, who is widely regarded as one of the best wicketkeepers in the history of the game, male or female, has been working with Sussex’s men’s squad as a specialist keeping coach since the start of 2021, and more recently took up a role with Team Abu Dhabi in the Abu Dhabi T10.Her appointment comes after a playing role with Welsh Fire in last season’s inaugural competition, when she came out of retirement to also feature for Northern Diamonds in the Charlotte Edwards Cup and Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. While she admitted to the BBC that she had been tempted to continue with her on-field career, Taylor also recognised she would be “stupid to turn down” the chance to enhance her coaching credentials with another high-profile appointment.”These roles are coming around now and any woman that gets offered an opportunity, they should take it with open arms,” Taylor said. “I’m extremely grateful to Manchester for giving me this opportunity.”There is no rush for me. I’m still young enough and fit enough to play, so if an opportunity comes around I will absolutely consider it.But right now coaching is the opportunity I was happy with, so I’m going down this route.”Taylor will be working under head coach Simon Katich, and alongside her fellow World Cup-winning wicketkeeper Jos Buttler, one of 11 men’s squad players to be retained by Manchester. Other England players in the set-up include Ollie Robinson, Matt Parkinson and Phil Salt – with whom Taylor has previously worked at Sussex.”I fell into the men’s game and I’m taking every opportunity I can to keep learning,” Taylor added. “We have to keep pushing. There are some brilliant women’s coaches out there and I hope they get recognised, in the male or female game.”Although her primary role will be with the men’s squad, Taylor will also work with the Manchester women’s set-up when the chance arises – including her former England team-mates Kate Cross and Sophie Ecclestone, and South Africa’s Lizelle Lee.”I absolutely loved playing last year,” Taylor added of the Hundred experience. “It’s an exciting tournament and I loved how the boys and girls were treated as one unit.”

The Athletic: Newcastle now eyeing "super" 22 y/o Englishman in January

Newcastle United are believed to be eyeing a move for a “super” player in the January transfer window, according to a new update from The Athletic.

Newcastle transfer news

The next window is now only just over a month away from opening, meaning the Magpies are being linked with plenty of potential new signings. Motherwell teenager Lennon Miller is reportedly a target, with the 18-year-old a midfielder who could have a massive future in the game.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo has been mentioned as a front-runner to come in and bolster Newcastle’s quality on the right wing. The 24-year-old has scored four goals in 12 appearances in the Premier League so far this season.

On the flip side, some Newcastle players are being linked with moves away from St James’ Park, not least star striker Alexander Isak. The Swede is wanted by the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal, although £115m may be needed to prise him away from the Magpies.

Miguel Almiron’s exit from Newcastle also looks increasingly likely in January, with the 30-year-old not a big part of Eddie Howe’s plans anymore, hence the need for a player of Semenyo’s ilk. The player himself is keen on a new challenge at this point in his career, so it would arguably be a surprise if he was still at St James’ during the second half of the season.

Newcastle eyeing January move for "super" player

According to a new report from The Athletic, relayed by The 72, Newcastle are eyeing a move for Middlesbrough midfielder Hayden Hackney in the next window.

A January move for the 22-year-old is mooted, with the update stating that he is being “watched” by the Magpies, as they contemplate new signings midway through the season.

England youth international Hayden Hackney.

Hackney may not be the world-renowned player that many Newcastle fans want to come in, but he is an excellent young footballer who can be seen as an exciting option for the long-term future.

Still only 22 years of age, the Englishman has become a key player for Boro, starting 14 matches in the Championship this season, scoring twice in that time. Meanwhile, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has lauded him in the past, saying:

“I’ve watched Hayden Hackney from afar, seeing his career flourish. There’s no better teacher for him than Michael, and he’ll enjoy the way Middlesbrough play. He’s a super player, and Morris is a good player in there too.”

Hackney may not be arriving at Newcastle as a key player, but he could be a brilliant squad option for Howe, having won seven caps for England’s Under-21s in the past, as well as being capped for Scotland’s Under-21s and England’s Under-15s in the past.

Newcastle could now sign "exciting" £5m sensation over Celtic and Rangers

He’s one of Scotland’s brightest talents.

ByTom Cunningham Nov 29, 2024

Planning for the future is always important, rather than simply signing players who can immediately be stars for Newcastle, and the fact that Hackney is a homegrown talent can only be a good thing, in terms of the English quota within the squad, making this one to watch.

Man Utd add £62m Juventus star to transfer shortlist amid contract standoff

Manchester United and INEOS have added a £62 million “big-name” player to their transfer shortlist, according to a recent report. Ruben Amorim will be aware of the task that faces him to get United back on top, and for that reason, he will be pushing the hierarchy to get some transfer business done in January.

Man Utd and INEOS now agree £4m deal to sign new gem for Amorim after talks

United are closing in on the signing of a player who can help address their problem position.

ByBrett Worthington Dec 12, 2024 Manchester United transfer news

The Red Devils have been linked with moves for some high-profile players in recent days, but it is unclear if they are transfers that can occur in the New Year. One player who has emerged on their radar is Mike Maignan. A move for Maignan will only come about if Andre Onana departs Old Trafford, with his future up in the air at the moment. The Red Devils are putting plans in place if they do need to move for a goalkeeper, and Maignan is at the top of their list.

AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.

While being linked with potential big money arrivals, United are closing in on their first signing for 2025, as Diego Leon looks set to join the club. United have agreed a £4 million deal to sign Leon from Cerro Porteno. The Premier League side have moved quickly to wrap up this deal, as on Wednesday it was reported that there were “active talks”. Now, the “groundwork” of the transfer has been done, and Leon is expected to join United in the summer, as he needs to wait until he turns 18 to join his new team.

Man Utd add £62m player to transfer shortlist

According to Football Insider, Manchester United have added Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic to their transfer shortlist. The Serbia international joined the Italian giants in January 2022, and while he has continued to score goals, he has yet to win the Serie A, his only success being the Italian Cup in the 2023/24 campaign.

Vlahovic, who has been dubbed a “big-name” player in the past, scored 10 goals in 27 league games during the 2022/23 season and then went on to better that last term, netting 16 times in 33 Serie A games. At 24, he has continued to be a clinical striker in one of the most competitive leagues in football, and that has put him on the radar of the Red Devils.

United have now added Vlahovic to their shortlist as they look at options to improve their forward line. Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee are held in high regard at Old Trafford but are struggling to find the back of the net on a consistent basis.

INEOS are continuing to monitor Vlahovic’s situation at Juventus, as his contract comes to an end in 2026. Talks are being held over a new contract for the forward, but it is currently described as a “standoff,” which has placed his future in jeopardy. United see Vlahovic as an alternative target to the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and Victor Osimhen, but it would be costly, as Juventus would want £62 million to sell the striker.

Deciding Test finely balanced after Pakistan hit back following Khawaja's 91

Australia 232 for 5 (Khawaja 91, Smith 59) vs PakistanAustralia opener Usman Khawaja fell agonisingly short of another Test century, as a disciplined Pakistan attack claimed three late wickets on day one to wrestle back control of the series deciding third test in Lahore.Having won a crucial toss and electing to bat, Australia reached stumps at a wobbly 232 for 5 with Cameron Green 20 not out and Alex Carey unbeaten on 8. Khawaja, Australia’s only centurion of the three-match series which remains deadlocked after two draws, top-scored with 91 and Steven Smith made 59 but Pakistan claimed the honours after a dominant final session.Player of the Ashes Travis Head endured his third straight middling score of the series when he was caught behind on 26 off a gem of a delivery from 19-year-old Naseem Shah, who was the standout bowler of an unwavering attack. The recalled quick finished with 2 for 40 off 19 overs while left-armer Shaheen Shah Afridi was the early star with two wickets in an opening burst.Green and Carey, who made a career best 93 in the second Test, survived a tricky late burst against the second new ball and will be relied upon on day two with Australia’s hopes of building a formidable first innings total hanging in the balance.Australia had a rollercoaster of an opening day, which was bookended by wickets and sandwiched in the middle by a 138-run third-wicket partnership between Khawaja and Smith who came together in the third over after Afridi removed David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne in the space of three balls. It appeared Khawaja and Smith, who enjoy batting together, were on course for a back breaking partnership but they were dismissed in the last session as Pakistan clawed back into the contest.Khawaja fell for the second time in the 90s during his herculean series when he was brilliantly caught one-handed by a diving Babar Azam at slip off spinner Sajid Khan. He has scored 392 runs at 130.67 in the series although just missed adding to his trio of tons struck since being recalled in January.Babar made amends after dropping Khawaja on 12 at slip before lunch after left-arm spinner Nauman Ali came into the attack in the 16th over. Pakistan were left further discouraged when on the next delivery a rash Smith advanced but smashed it straight back to Nauman, who spilt the return catch as the batter immediately admonished himself.Naseem Shah roars after getting Steven Smith, as the latter walks back•AFP/Getty Images

Pakistan, however, never wavered in a plucky performance in the first Test played in Lahore since 2009. They toiled manfully on a slow pitch amid stifling conditions and conjured reverse swing after lunch, while hardworking Sajid notably turned the ball late in the day.In what should please their new bowling coach Shaun Tait, the former Australia quick, Pakistan bowled tightly throughout the day’s play in a more controlled performance than they displayed over the opening two Tests of the historic series, the first contested between the teams in Pakistan since 1998.Naseem was an inspired selection after being recalled at the expense of allrounder Faheem Ashraf, as Pakistan beefed up their attack with five specialist bowlers. During a fiery performance in the first Test, Naseem had been erratic as he often resorted to short-pitched bowling but he was restrained here and concentrated on hitting a line and length.Naseem executed his plans perfectly and he was rewarded after tea by trapping Smith plumb lbw for 59 with a delivery that nipped back to end the century partnership and expose Australia’s inexperienced middle-order late in the day.Smith was crestfallen after being just seven runs short of becoming the fastest batter to 8000 Test runs. To add to his sour mood, he has failed to convert three straight half-centuries this series as Smith’s century rut continued having scored just one ton from his last 29 Test innings.Smith had come to the crease unusually early after left-arm quick Afridi lit a fuse under the Test with a superb opening five-over burst to leave the sparse crowd in the terraces jubilant. After such barren stretches for bowlers in this series, a red hot Afridi struck in the third over when he trapped Warner lbw for 7 with a pearler of a delivery that cut back then two balls later he lured Labuschagne into a loose drive to be caught behind. After having words with the incoming batter, Afridi capped a scintillating over with a huge lbw shout first delivery to Smith but it hit him outside the line. Even though Smith survived, Australia were left stunned after Labuschagne, the No.1 ranked batter in the world, fell for his second duck in three innings, and Warner’s relatively lean series continued and he now gone 39 international innings without a century. It was a case of missed opportunities for Australia, who were pinned down against an inspired Pakistan attack leaving this defining Test delicately poised.

Celtic lead European giants in race to sign "powerful" £100k-a-week player

Celtic are in pole position to complete the signing of a “powerful” Premier League player, according to an exciting new transfer report.

Celtic transfer news

The Hoops are flying in the Scottish Premiership title race, showing no sign of slowing up and giving the likes of Aberdeen and Rangers little hope of closing the gap on them. On Saturday, Brendan Rodgers’ side won 3-0 at home to Hibernian, meaning they have now opened up a nine-point lead at the top of the table.

Despite this, the Scottish giants mustn’t rest on their laurels, especially in terms of their success in Europe, so new signings are unsurprisingly being mooted.

Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka.

One player who has been linked with a move to Celtic is Chelsea’s Carney Chukwuemeka, who has struggled to become an important part of Enzo Maresca’s plans in west London so far this season, not appearing once in the Premier League and playing one solitary game in the EFL Cup, totalling just 14 minutes.

Celtic have also been linked with an audacious move for Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen, although a transfer likely wouldn’t materialise until the end of the season. The 32-year-old isn’t at his peak anymore, but he could still be a fantastic option for the Hoops.

Celtic in pole position to sign "powerful" ace

According to a new report from Calciomercato, Celtic are leading the battle to sign Chelsea midfielder Chukwuemeka in the January transfer window. The 21-year-old is also wanted by AC Milan, but the Hoops are currently ahead of the European giants in the pecking order, having “gained pole” in the race. A loan move with an option to buy is mooted for the £100,000-a-week ace.

Carney Chukwuemeka

Chukwuemeka may be struggling to make an impact at Chelsea, but in fairness, there is no shame in that, considering he is being kept out by the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia, all of whom cost huge amounts of money.

The young Englishman could be a brilliant signing for Celtic midway through the campaign, though, with Graham Potter praising him during their time together at Stamford Bridge: “Well, if you look at these attributes, he’s a big powerful boy that can run and run away from people, and in a game like Brentford, you’re often in duels and need physicality.

“I thought he and Christian did well when they came on. They affected the game. That was just the thinking. He’s a young player, but he’s got exciting attributes. We just need to help him reach his potential because his potential is exciting.”

A move to Celtic could ultimately be the best outcome for all parties, allowing Chukwuemeka regular football and ensuring the Hoops have additional quality in the middle of the park.

Rangers v Celtic: 8 of the best Old Firm League Cup finals

The Glasgow rivals have shared a few cup final classics over the years.

ByRoss Kilvington Dec 8, 2024

The Chelsea ace has been capped for England across four different age groups, winning a combined 23 caps, and a switch to Scotland could give him a new lease of life. If there was an option to sign him permanently, that would be even better.
