"Massive shame" – Leeds reporter reacts after new injury to Largie Ramazani

Leeds United were dealt a brand new injury concern to winger Largie Ramazani in the Whites’ latest Championship win over Watford on Tuesday.

Leeds 2-1 Watford

Daniel Farke named an unchanged team from the side that beat Sheffield United last week at Elland Road, and that decision paid off in the first 10 minutes.

Ramazani netted his first Elland Road goal in the opening four minutes, and shortly after that, Brenden Aaronson doubled the lead on what was his 24th birthday. Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann had an evening to forget in front of the south stand, with his two errors resulting in goals for Ramazani and Aaronson.

It looked as if a routine victory was on the cards, however, Watford pulled a goal back in the second half through Kwadwo Baah and made Leeds work for the three points.

Leeds are now averaging two points per game after 11 fixtures and Farke was pleased with the victory, saying: “First of all I’m really happy with the three points. I was worried after 10 minutes when we were 2-0 up. I’ve experienced so often this situation.

“Everyone praises us after a magical evening, the national press, Sky, the opponents’ manager [Chris Wilder] says no one will finish above this team and you go into the next game against a really physical side, experienced, good team and go 2-0 up. It almost always leads to a situation where you do one step less, there is an unlucky moment and after such a start you quite often drop points and say you went ahead too early.

“But we can’t criticise anything, we created many more good chances, the only thing that was missing was the third goal. Largie Ramazani came off, Manor Solomon had to play longer than I wanted. We had 10 to 15 poor minutes at the beginning of the second half but nothing major.”

As Farke alludes to, Ramazani’s evening was cut short after his goal after a heavy but fair challenge from Festy Ebosele. The summer signing is now the latest injury concern, with Ethan Ampadu and Ilia Gruev sidelined long term, while Max Wober is also injured.

Largie Ramazani injury update from Leeds

Reacting to the injury, The Yorkshire Evening Post’s Graham Smyth described the injury to Ramazani as a “massive shame”.

After the game, Farke said that Ramazani, who earns £910,000-a-year in Yorkshire, “twisted his ankle” and needs “further assessment”.

“Rolled, twisted his ankle, it was pretty painful. We have to wait for further assessment. I hope for not a bad injury, we deserve a bit of luck.”

With Ramazani possibly out of Saturday’s trip to Bristol City, Farke will likely turn to Manor Solomon or Dan James to come in. The pair have also had their injury issues this season but once again featured on Tuesday evening from the bench.

David Warner on Sunrisers axing: 'Bitter pill to swallow but I don't think I will ever get answers'

He would “love nothing more than to represent Sunrisers still”, but has admitted it may be time to move on

Once the most important member of the Sunrisers team, David Warner was reduced to waving the flag from the stands in 2021•BCCI

David Warner would love to remain with Sunrisers Hyderabad next season, but he admits that might not happen, after being benched for their last five games of IPL 2021. He insists, however, that his fans will have plenty to look forward to in the “long time I have left”.”Look, I’m not 100% sure,” Warner told , when asked about what led to his sacking and eventual axing from the team. “With utmost respect for the owners, Trevor Bayliss, [VVS] Laxman, Tom Moody and Murali [Muthiah Muralidaran], when a decision gets made, it has to be unanimous. But you don’t know who is going for you, who wants you selected, who doesn’t. End of the day you’re told you’re not playing.”Related

Warner was cagey on what led to his sacking as captain, but he has expressed hurt at how he was treated over the course of the season. Having captained Sunrisers to the 2016 title and scored over 4000 runs for them over eight seasons, Warner felt he needed answers from the team management, but wasn’t sure they would be forthcoming.”The disappointing thing for me was not being explained why I was dropped as captain,” he said. “I think if you want to go along the lines of form, it’s a difficult one because I guess whatever you’ve done in the past would have some weightage moving forward, especially when you’ve played 100 [95] games for the franchise.”I had four bad games, two run-outs in that, on slow and low wickets in Chennai. It’s difficult, a bitter pill to swallow but I don’t think I will ever get answers and must move on. It’s time to look forward, there’s another auction coming up. I’d love nothing more than to represent Sunrisers still, but the decision remains with the owners and what direction the franchise wants to go in.”David Warner says he would be ‘thrilled’ to captain a side in IPL 2022, if asked to do so•BCCI/IPL

Having averaged over 39 in each of his previous seven seasons at the franchise – while striking at over 140 in six of them – Warner endured a disappointing 2021, scoring 195 runs in eight innings at an average of 24.37 and a strike rate of 107.73.Sunrisers removed Warner from the captaincy midway through the tournament, just before the India leg came to a halt because of Covid-19. They replaced him with Kane Williamson, who had first taken over the captaincy in 2018 when Warner was serving a year-long ban for his role in the Newlands ball-tampering episode. During the second leg of IPL 2021 in the UAE, Warner featured in just two of the Sunrisers’ seven games, before being left out altogether. In one of those games, Warner wasn’t even part of the contingent that travelled to the ground, which led to speculation of a fallout with the team management, before head coach Bayliss confirmed that Warner hadn’t been the only senior player left behind at the team hotel.Warner seems to have recognised that it’s time to move on from Sunrisers, however – a recent Instagram post in which he thanked the team’s fans for their support over “a great ride” suggested as much. “Sometimes you get the feeling that you’re not going to be retained by a franchise, with little signs that you could see in and around the group,” he said. “From my perspective, I could see the writing was on the wall, and it was an appropriate time to say thank you [to the fans on social media].”With the addition of two new teams set to make the IPL a ten-team event from 2022, Warner could become a hot pick at the auction. And he would be happy to take over leadership responsibilities if asked to.”[Captaincy] is definitely something I love doing,” he said. “It makes me play a lot better, also having had a taste of it in this [IPL] environment makes it easier as well. I shared that role at Sunrisers with Kane [Williamson] a fair bit, it was also great to have other leaders in and around the franchise.”He [Williamson] was one guy I had a lot of chats with, Jason Holder is another guy. Rashid Khan as well, he has captained Afghanistan. These are guys with whom you can share knowledge and rebound information on and off. I would be thrilled to do that [captain a side] if it came up, it’s all about getting a solid foundation together.”If it did arise, I’d love to do it. A person of my character can get people up and about. I’m energetic, I call a spade a spade, I would love every individual to perform at their best and hold everyone accountable to their actions.”No matter which team it’s at, and whether it’s as captain or not, Warner is raring to be back at the IPL next year.”Obviously I’d love to be part of the IPL in 2022. I obviously started my career at Delhi, played with Sunrisers and yet the final chapter of my career, I still have a long time left in these leagues, and there are plenty of runs left. I’ll be looking forward to whatever opportunities present itself and I’ll give it my 100%.”

The 8.0 Celtic star who just showed Rodgers exactly what he’s been missing

Celtic’s place at the top of the Scottish Premiership remains secure after they came away with a relatively comfortable 2-0 win over Dundee on Wednesday night.

The Hoops have now won nine and drawn one of their opening ten matches in the top-flight, which has helped them to sit top of the table and on course for a fourth straight title.

However, that incredible start to the season has not produced the gap to second that you may expect, as Aberdeen have matched that run of results – only sitting behind Brendan Rodgers’ side on goal difference.

Alistair Johnston and Arne Engels scored the goals for the Scottish giants in the second half against Dundee earlier this week, with the former coming off the bench to open the scoring.

Rodgers opted to hand opportunities to a number of different players on Wednesday night, with games coming thick and fast domestically and in Europe, to see which of his fringe men have what it takes to step up when they are needed.

One of the players who was dropped down to the bench was Daizen Maeda, who has had a mixed start to the 2024/25 campaign for the Hoops.

Daizen Maeda's form this season

The Japan international has been the first-choice option for Rodgers on the left flank this season in the Premiership and has been inconsistent with his play in the final third.

Maeda has started seven of his nine appearances in the division and has produced two goals and two assists, with his finishing – in particular – leaving a lot to be desired.

Daizen Maeda

The 27-year-old forward has missed a whopping seven ‘big chances’ to reach two goals, with those two strikes coming from 3.46 xG in total. This shows that the winger has not made the most of the high-quality openings that his teammates have provided him with.

Meanwhile, Maeda has registered two assists from two ‘big chances’ created and has only averaged 1.1 key passes per game for the Scottish giants, which does not suggest that he has been outstanding from a creative perspective either.

As you can see in the table above, the Japanese whiz also failed to finish his chances and create opportunities on a regular basis in the Premiership last season for Rodgers.

These statistics, from the 2023/24 campaign and the current term, suggest that Maeda is an unreliable player in the final third, due to his wasteful finishing and lack of creativity week-in-week-out.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast's Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

Rodgers handed Luis Palma an opportunity to shine against Dundee on Wednesday night and the Honduras international showed the manager exactly what he has been missing.

Luis Palma's performance against Dundee in numbers

The former Greek league star came away from the game without a goal or an assist to show for his efforts and may not have impressed some supporters, due to his lack of direct involvement in a goal.

However, that was not all his fault as the perception of his performance against Dundee could have been completely different if his teammates had made the most of his creativity.

Palma only played 57 minutes at Parkhead and managed four key passes and one ‘big chance’ created, whilst also completing 89% of his attempted passes, which earned him a Sofascore rating of 8.0.

If Kyogo Furuhashi – who missed three ‘big chances’ – had not been so wasteful in front of goal, the winger could have ended the game with an assist or two and the feeling around his display could have been very different.

As you can see in the table above, the Honduran wizard produced far more creativity against Dundee than Maeda typically does when he starts on the left flank.

It was Palma’s first start of the season in the Premiership and he showed Rodgers the creativity that had been missing from the team on that side of the pitch, as the Japanese winger has struggled to provide much in that respect – last season and this season.

If the 24-year-old magician can now kick on and reach the heights that he managed in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign, the Northern Irish head coach could have another huge asset on his hands.

Luis Palma's form last season

After joining from Aris in the summer of 2023, the right-footed attacker enjoyed a fantastic start to his career in Scotland by showcasing his quality as a scorer and a creator of goals.

Palma produced an eye-catching return of five goals and nine assists in his first 16 games in the Premiership, along with two goals in the Champions League, before the turn of the year, after which he struggled.

In the second half of the campaign, the Honduras international only managed two goals and zero assists in 12 appearances in the division for the Hoops.

This shows that the potential is there for him to be an incredibly productive player at Premiership level but it is down to him to get back to the kind of form he showed in 2023.

As you can see in the table above, Palma ended the 2023/24 campaign with more goals, fewer ‘big chances’ missed, more assists, and more ‘big chances’ created in the same number of appearances as Maeda.

These statistics suggest that the potential is there for the 2023 signing to offer more than the Japan international, who has struggled at times this season, in the final third if he can find his best form again.

His promising showing against Dundee, with four key passes and one ‘big chance’ created, shows that he is on his way back to his best, which will surely please Rodgers.

Dhoni, Kohli, Rohit, Bumrah, Russell retained; Rahul, Rashid opt to go into auction pool

Sunrisers signed up new contracts with the uncapped Jammu & Kashmir pair of Abdul Samad and Umran Malik

Nagraj Gollapudi30-Nov-20214:14

Why was Rashid Khan not SRH’s top retention pick?

ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Chennai Super KingsRetained: Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni, Moeen Ali, Ruturaj Gaikwad
MS Dhoni was the first name the defending champions wanted on their list, alongside that of Ravindra Jadeja, who has been with the franchise since 2011.The point of discussion concerning Dhoni was which place he should take on the retention list. Dhoni wanted the lowest of the four rungs. The Super Kings, meanwhile, felt placing him as the top player made more sense, as it would swell their purse ahead of the next auction in case he decided to retire after the 2022 season.Eventually, Dhoni took the second spot, with Jadeja, at INR 16 crore, the first retention.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

It was the third slot that was the most debated, with Moeen Ali pitted against Faf du Plessis. It could not be confirmed whether it was Moeen’s all-round skills that swung the scales his way, or whether du Plessis wanted a higher price than the INR 6 crore slotted for the third spot.Ruturaj Gaikwad, who in 2021 became the second player after Robin Uthappa (for Kolkata Knight Riders in 2014) to win the Orange Cap for most runs in an IPL season while also being part of the title-winning team, was a unanimous choice as the fourth. It has been learnt that the Super Kings have earmarked the Maharashtra and India batter as a future captain too.Major players released: Faf du Plessis, Dwayne Bravo, Suresh Raina, Deepak ChaharDelhi CapitalsRetained: Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw, Anrich NortjeDelhi Capitals have made the playoffs the last three seasons under Ricky Ponting, who has always been keen to promote young talent. All the four players retained – Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw and Anrich Nortje – have been matchwinners for the Capitals more than once over the last two years, and staved off rhe competition easily. It has been learnt that the franchise saw the quartet as the core group around which the rest of the unit could be assembled during the auction.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The absence of Shreyas Iyer is likely to be a talking point, but once the Capitals had retained Pant as the captain for the 2021 season, Iyer’s position for the next season was not certain. Iyer himself would obviously have captaincy ambitions, and with more than one team still looking for a leader, he felt he was better off going into the auction.Major players released: Shreyas Iyer, Avesh Khan, R Ashwin, Kagiso RabadaKolkata Knight RidersRetained: Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy, Venkatesh Iyer, Sunil Narine
All the four players Kolkata Knight Riders have retained would have likely found a lot of takers in an auction. Their retentions highlight the importance of supporting players (Andre Russell, Sunil Narine, Varun Chakravarthy) who have been with them, and also promoting a young talent (Venkatesh Iyer). While Russell and Narine have been loyal Knight Riders players for a while, and relatively quick to sign fresh contracts, it is learnt that Chakravarthy and Iyer were keen to bargain for better financial packages. In the end, the franchise managed to convince the two that the Knight Riders could offer them a platform where they could play a more dominant role to help with their ambition.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, Knight Riders’ chief executive officer Venky Mysore said that leaving out Shubman Gill was a tough choice, but the franchise felt Iyer and Chakravarthy possessed skills that are not easily found in the auction.Major players released: Eoin Morgan, Shubman Gill, Dinesh Karthik, Lockie FergusonMumbai IndiansRetained: Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Suryakumar Yadav, Kieron PollardRohit Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah were once again the top two retentions, just like four seasons ago. The two other slots were where Mumbai Indians are understood to have waited until the last minute, before making a decision. The third slot went to Suryakumar Yadav, who topped Ishan Kishan in the mind of the decision makers. It has been learnt that the team management felt Kishan had more impact mainly batting in the top order, as opposed to Suryakumar, who is not just a 360-degree batter but also can float around the batting order.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Long-time Mumbai Indians player Kieron Pollard bagged the fourth slot with a price tag of INR 6 crore, which was slightly more than the INR 5.4 crore the franchise bought him for at the 2018 auction using the right-to-match card.Major players released: Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Trent Boult, Rahul ChaharPunjab KingsRetained: Mayank Agarwal, Arshdeep SinghHaving retained just two players, including the uncapped left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh, Punjab Kings will enter the 2022 auction with the strongest purse of INR 72 crore.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

While Punjab were understood to have been disappointed after KL Rahul decided to move on, the franchise moved in quickly to start negotiations with Mayank Agarwal, a potential captaincy candidate. While Agarwal has signed the new contract worth INR 12 crore, Punjab’s auction purse will be deducted by INR 14 crore, the retention amount set by IPL in case only one capped player is retained.Major players released: KL Rahul, Ravi Bishnoi, Nicholas PooranRajasthan RoyalsRetained: Sanju Samson, Jos Buttler, Yashasvi JaiswalShould Rajasthan Royals have retained Jofra Archer, the player of the 2020 IPL? It was a question that kept the management thinking till almost the last minute. Eventually, the Royals decided to stick with Sanju Samson and Jos Buttler, along with uncapped Indian batter Yashasvi Jaiswal leaving them a healthy purse of INR 62 crore.Major players released: Ben Stokes, Jofra ArcherRoyal Challengers BangaloreRetained: Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, Mohammed SirajAs the first of the three players Royal Challengers Bangalore retained, Virat Kohli will get INR 15 crore. Another day, this would have been headline news: Kohli being paid INR 2 crore less than what he got when Royal Challengers retained him ahead of the 2018 auction. But things have changed – Kohli is no more the captain and wants to end his career at the franchise while trying to leave a legacy.Glenn Maxwell, for the first time in his IPL career, was retained, getting the second slot at Royal Challengers, while Mohammed Siraj was the third.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

It might come as a surprise to many, because Siraj was pitted against the trio of Yuzvendra Chahal, Devdutt Padikkal and Harshal Patel. One key stumbling block here was the low price tag for the fourth player – INR 6 crore – which is likely to have dissuaded the likes of Padikkal and Harshal, who would have preferred a higher price after consistent impact in the last season especially. The other thinking behind retaining only three players could be that Royal Challengers still don’t have a captain and need a strong auction purse to purchase a high-profile player, ideally Indian.Major players released: Devdutt Padikkal, Harshal Patel, Yuzvendra ChahalSunrisers HyderabadRetained: Kane Williamson, Abdul Samad, Umran Malik
How did Sunrisers Hyderabad let go of Rashid Khan?Rashid, it is understood, was the second player the Sunrisers had slotted in behind Kane Williamson, who had also been identified as the captain. Until recently, it was understood that Rashid was keen to renew his contract with the Sunrisers, who had bought him in 2017 and then retained him a year later for INR 9 crore. However, the Afghanistan legspinner was keen to get a better deal.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

The Sunrisers have also held on to two uncapped Indian players, both from Jammu & Kashmir, in aggressive batter Abdul Samad and fast bowler Umran Malik, who made his IPL debut this season and turned heads with extreme pace, touching 150kph. Despite Rashid’s absence, one strong element favouring the Sunrisers at the auction is a big purse of INR 68 crore.Major players released: David Warner, Jonny Bairstow, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Liverpool targeting key signing in January as FSG now make funds available

Liverpool will reportedly be in the market for a key signing in the January transfer window, with FSG now making funds available after a quiet summer.

Liverpool short in key positions

The Reds couldn’t have asked for a better start to life under Arne Slot, with the Dutchman making a seamless transition at Anfield, filling the void left by Jurgen Klopp impressively. Liverpool are top of the Premier League, excelling in the Champions League and have made it into the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, so there is understandable positivity on show at Anfield currently.

That said, there was plenty of dissatisfaction about the lack of transfer business on show during the summer, with only Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa joining the Reds. The former has remained on loan at Valencia for this season, while the latter was a surprise signing who hasn’t yet got going at his new club.

Many supporters were desperate to see a No.6 come into Liverpool’s midfield, with a move for Real Sociedad hero Martin Zubimendi falling through, while others felt an extra centre-back was needed, given Ibrahima Konate’s injury record and the fact that Virgil van Dijk is now 33 years of age.

Liverpool target defender in January

According to a new report from Football Insider, Liverpool will look to sign a centre-back in January, with money set to be “available for the Reds in the mid-season window after their quiet summer”.

The update goes on to add that “Liverpool chiefs see January as an opportune time to strengthen as they bid to keep their Premier League title challenge on track”, with Michael Edwards and his transfer team “doing their due diligence on a potential centre-back signing in the new year”.

This will be music to the ears of many Liverpool fans, with the need for another centre-back evident during the summer, even though it hasn’t been an issue so far this season.

That’s because Konate and Van Dijk have been almost ever-present for the Reds in 2024/25 to date – the former was forced off at half-time in the 2-1 win at home to Brighton last weekend – but there is always the risk of an injury to one, especially the Frenchman.

Jarell Quansah showed in the opening game of the league season at Ipswich Town that he is still a work in progress, having been hauled off by Slot at the break, while Joe Gomez was excellent against Brighton, but has been playing as a full-back more than a centre-back in recent years.

Bringing in a new face makes complete sense for Liverpool, allaying the threat of an injury to Konate or Van Dijk derailing their Premier League title charge.

Liverpool thought they had the next Alonso before he was sold for just £6m

Whoever comes in shouldn’t be a short-term fix, however, instead being seen as a potential long-term replacement for Van Dijk, and perhaps even someone capable of playing at left-back as well, following Andy Robertson’s dip in form this season.
