Talks opened: Rangers chase late move for dream Jefte signing

Glasgow Rangers sealed progress into the quarter-finals of the League Cup on Saturday evening despite yet another subpar performance at Hampden Park.

The 2-0 victory over St Johnstone may have sent the Ibrox side through to the next round, but Philippe Clement’s men struggled throughout the game. Cyriel Dessers scored a contentious opener, before Ross McCausland rounded things off with a well taken effort late on.

Phillipe Clement

A win is a win, but things just feel so flat right now on the pitch. With a Premiership clash coming up against Celtic in a few weeks, Clement must get his side firing, otherwise, it could be a rout.

The Belgian was missing Ridvan Yilmaz from his starting XI against the Saints after he suffered an injury against Dynamo Kyiv last week.

The Turkish defender will now miss four to six weeks of action, which means the already problematic left-back area may well need some added depth before the end of the transfer window.

Will he sign a replacement in the next week or so? As it looks like the Gers are showing interest in a defender who currently plays in Italy…

Rangers showing interest in Croatian defender

As per reports in Italy, there has been an update regarding Rangers transfer activity surrounding their need for another left-back, with claims made that Domagoj Bradaric of Salernitana is currently on Clement’s radar.

The suggestion is that the Gers have already opened talks regarding a potential move for the defender, with a loan move with an obligation to buy having been mooted.

Domagoj Bradaric

An initial temporary deal would perhaps be the best course of action, especially as Yilmaz should be fit in the next few weeks, and with Robbie Fraser and Jefte – two young talents – already at the club, another permanent option wouldn’t make much sense.

In the short term, however, signing Bradaric could be a wise move by Clement, allowing some room for Jefte to operate in a more advanced position.

Domagoj Bradaric’s 2023/24 season in numbers

It's fair to say Salernitana didn’t exactly enjoy the best of seasons during 2023/24. The club finished rock bottom of the Italian top flight, recording just two wins all season while accumulating only 17 points.

Having won the French Ligue 1 title with Lille, the 5 foot 10 defender moved to Italy and made 31 league appearances during his maiden season before missing just four games last term for the club.

Among his teammates, Bradaric ranked third for accurate passes per game (29) in Serie A, along with ranking fourth for key passes per game (1.1), sixth for successful dribbles per game (0.6) and fourth for interceptions each match (0.9), showcasing his skills across a range of metrics.

Despite his side being relegated, these statistics prove he was clearly one of the better performers.

Bradaric also won 3.1 total duels per game – a success rate of 54% – while grabbing three assists and creating four big chances, solid figures from the left-back, who clearly likes to burst forward often.

Although playing for the worst team in Serie A last season, the Croatian ranked in the top 25% across the entire league for interceptions (1.05) and ball recoveries (4.91) when compared to his positional peers.

This shows that he should have no problem adapting to Scottish football, especially given how solidly he has performed for a team that struggled majorly in 2023/24.

His inclusion as the main left-back until Yilmaz returns to the team would suggest Jefte is pushed into a left-wing slot, something which Clement has experimented with already this season.

Why Domagoj Bradaric could thrive with Jefte

Despite playing the vast majority of his senior career on the left side of the defence, the Brazilian showcased his attacking traits during a loan spell at APOEL Nicosia last season.

In just 31 league matches, the 20-year-old scored three goals while registering four assists. Not only that, but the youngster averaged one key pass per game and succeeded with 2.4 dribbles per match too – a success rate of 62% – clearly proving where his true qualities lie.

Clement has obviously paid attention as two of his three appearances for the Light Blues have come in a more advanced role, as he demonstrated glimpses of his attacking talents during the two Champions League ties against Kyiv.

For the game against St Johnstone, Jefte reverted to the left side of the defence, linking up well with Rabbi Matondo during the match.

Bradaric would perhaps offer greater defensive support given his experience across Europe’s top five leagues, which would allow the Brazilian a free rein to cause chaos in the final third.

The Croatian – as previously mentioned – is no slouch at getting forward at the right times either, suggesting that the pair could form a dream partnership up and down the left flank for Clement.

There are just under two weeks left of the current transfer market, meaning time isn’t exactly on Clement’s side. This could see the Gers bringing in a few players on temporary deals, such as a move for Bradaric.

Judging by his career so far, the 24-year-old would be a wonderful addition to the current first-team squad and would be adequate cover for the injured Yilmaz.

Jefte certainly looks like one of the more exciting purchases by the manager this summer. If he can gain consistent game time, there is no doubt that he could secure the club a substantial profit in the future.

Bringing in the current Salernitana defender would be a smart piece of business, especially as a loan deal could give him more flexibility with regard to other areas of the team, as funds are tight at the moment unless there are outgoings.

The next few weeks could make or break the club’s season. Let's hope Clement and Co can get things right.

Bedingham leads way with unbeaten 180 as Notts winless run looks set to continue

South Africa-born batsman David Bedingham turned his maiden first-class century in English cricket into a career-best unbeaten 180 to put Durham in complete control of their LV= Insurance County Championship match at Trent Bridge. The 26-year-old right-hander, no stranger to these parts after three seasons with village side Plumtree in the Nottinghamshire Premier League, surpassed his previous best of 147 for Boland against Easterns in 2018 to help Durham recover from 22 for 3 to build a 395-run lead with one day remaining. Bedingham’s fifth-wicket partnership with Ned Eckersley, who finished unbeaten on 113, has added 254, a Durham record for the fifth wicket against any opposition. It means that Nottinghamshire, whose bowling attack was weakened by the absence of the injured Jake Ball, will – barring something extraordinary – see their woeful run of results in first-class cricket stretch to 28 matches without a win, going back to June 2018.Bedingham’s performance eclipsed the unbeaten 96 by Nottinghamshire wicketkeeper Tom Moores as the innings of the day, much as the latter had its merits as the home side, once 66 for 5, recovered to 267 all out in their first innings.Moores shared an 89-run stand for the eighth wicket with Brett Hutton, who himself made a 71-ball half-century, before scoring 33 of the 37 runs added for the last two Nottinghamshire wickets. He had taken successive boundaries off Matt Salisbury to be only one shot away from his third career hundred when final partner Ball was out, so he could consider himself unlucky, although he had been dropped on 8 and 79.Ball’s sore back kept him off the field as Durham began their second innings just before lunch but Nottinghamshire’s attack seemed hardly to miss him as Luke Fletcher struck with his second ball to have Alex Lees leg before without scoring and Hutton then dismissed Scott Borthwick, caught at second slip, to leave the visitors 5 for 2 for the second time in the match as skipper Borthwick reflected on scores of nought and 1 in the first match of his return to the county.Mike Jones fell shortly afterwards but Bedingham looked as sure-footed as he had in the first innings and, after a partnership of 56 with Jack Burnham had drawn Nottinghamshire’s sting, he completed his second half-century of the match when he drove Fletcher handsomely for his seventh boundary.Hitting the ball cleanly and fluently throughout, his century came with his 12th boundary, crashed through the offside again off Fletcher, and his final tally from 228 balls faced comprised 15 fours and three sixes, one of which disappeared into the upper levels of the Radcliffe Road stand. Eckersley’s hundred, the 16th of his career, came off 123 balls with 11 fours.

Chelsea tell £170k-p/w star’s agent they’re happy to pay his release clause

Chelsea have informed the agent of the £170,000-a-week Spain international that they are willing to meet his release clause, according to a new report.

It has been another chaotic transfer window for the blue side of London, as Enzo Maresca’s reign has now gotten firmly underway. Chelsea have been extremely busy in this transfer window, and with three days remaining, it appears as though it isn’t going to get any quieter.

The Blues picked up their first win in the Premier League on Sunday as they brushed aside Wolverhampton Wanderers 6-2, and are set to follow that result up with a large sale, with Romelu Lukaku heading to Napoli for around £30m.

Lukaku's sale will add to a hefty list of departures, with Conor Gallagher's protracted move to Atlético Madrid finally coming to an end last week. Goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga is also set to leave the club in the coming days – the Spaniard is said to be undergoing his medical at AFC Bournemouth ahead of what will be a loan move to the club. According to Fabrizio Romano, the goalkeeper has signed a new one-year contract with Chelsea before joining the Cherries on a straight loan deal until the end of the season.

Pedro Neto and João Félix have been the most expensive captures meanwhile, closely followed by midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, but it seems the manager isn't done quite yet. While the focus may be getting players out of Stamford Bridge, Chelsea haven’t all but given up on adding to their squad before Friday’s 11pm deadline.

Chelsea are willing to pay Spain star's release clause

According to HITC, Chelsea, alongside Premier League rivals Liverpool, have informed Nico Williams’ agent that they are willing to pay the player’s release clause to sign him from Atletico Bilbao. The attacker has had his eyes on a move to Barcelona, but as of yet, that move has failed to materialise.

This report states that Williams, who, according to former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney reminds him of a young Cristiano Ronaldo, has shown no desire to move to England, and that remains the same. However, if that stance were to change, HITC is stating that Arsenal would be at the front of the queue, while the Blues and Reds are lurking in wait too.

Spain star Nico Williams

One of Spain's stars of their Euro 2024 triumph, the 22 year-old is said to be on a weekly wage of €200,385, which is £170,000-a-week. Williams excelled for Bilbao last season, as he scored five goals and registered 14 assists in 31 La Liga games, meaning he has now scored 20 goals and recorded 26 assists in 124 games for the club in all competitions.

'Still a work in progress' – Ellyse Perry reveals new adjustments to her bowling ahead of NZ T20s

Also said the Australia women have received some advice from their male counterparts on how to adjust to cricket after a period of quarantine in NZ

Andrew McGlashan25-Mar-2021It has been more than a year since Ellyse Perry limped out of the T20 World Cup after severely injuring her hamstring. She has admitted it has taken her all that time to return to a level close to what she was pre-injury. And there’s more work to be done too.She has also used the opportunity – and the imbalance between training and playing created by the Covid-19 – to make adjustments to her run-up, which have taken time to feel natural. Her Australia comeback will be against the same side she was facing when the dreams of a home World Cup final were shattered.Perry sat out Australia’s one international assignment since the World Cup – the visit by New Zealand last September – before returning to action in the WBBL with Sydney Sixers which followed shortly after. The runs came at a good volume – 390 at 48.75 – but a strike-rate of below 100 (96.53) was enough to create some debate about her batting. Meanwhile, with the ball, it was a struggle as she claimed eight wickets with an economy rate of 8.35 and that was followed by a WNCL campaign for Victoria where she took just two wickets in six matches.”Throughout my rehab process I saw that as a great opportunity to work on a few different things and one of those was improving the efficiency or effectiveness of my run-up to give me a little more balance and power at the crease,” Perry explained. “That was a work in progress and bringing it into the first round of actual competition at the start of the WNCL, I didn’t expect it to go smoothly. Those first couple of games against New South Wales probably weren’t perfect but since then it’s been really great because I’ve been able to iron that out. It feels fine now.”Related

Mott on XI in NZ: 'Going to be few disappointed players'

Perry joins Birmingham for the Hundred

“That’s always the challenge and the best part of being involved in sport is the constant need to improve and evolve as a player,” she added. “It’s no different for any player. At different points in your career, there are different challenges and ways to go about things, but from a bit of a broader picture, it’s probably taken me the best part of 12 months to feel like I’m back to full playing fitness and performance levels.”By no means do I think I was close where I was before I got injured during the WBBL, and it’s probably still a bit of a work in progress, but it’s been a really nice opportunity to work on various aspects of my game.”A trade-off for this tour currently taking place is that the Australia players have missed the final stages of the WNCL with the final between Victoria and Queensland taking place in Melbourne on Saturday. Victoria, who are without six names plus the injured Annabel Sutherland, made a request to Cricket Australia about delaying the final to allow the Australia players to be available, but the original schedule has been retained.”In the current climate you’ve got to make the most of opportunities to play cricket,” Perry said. “The fact there’s a final going ahead is the most important thing because you just don’t what will happen at the moment. It was worth a shot asking the question. Domestic cricket means a lot to all of us.”It’s a shame, it would have been really nice to play the whole season but it’s also very hard to complain when there’s an opportunity to play international cricket as well.”Australia will complete their managed isolation in Christchurch on Saturday ahead of the first T20I in Hamilton on Sunday evening. They will be aiming to use advice passed on from the men’s side who found themselves off the pace at the start of their series against New Zealand last month.”Some of the mail we got from the men’s team was that when they came over here adjusting to the pace of a match again after being in quarantine for two weeks and just training was probably the biggest shock for them,” Perry said. “So there’s something to be aware of, just making sure we step up from training to competition again and we are not on our heels from the get-go.”

Move over Chiesa: Liverpool could have signed a "monster" Salah heir

Liverpool’s transfer business throughout the summer was underwhelming, to say the least, as Arne Slot waited until the last minute to sign goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili and winger Federico Chiesa just before the window shut.

It is clear that Slot signed Chiesa as a long-term heir to Mohamed Salah, who turned 32 in the summer, yet the former Juventus man has endured a tough time of it in the previous few years.

Federico Cheisa’s Juventus statistics

The winger was a key part of the Italian side which won Euro 2020, scoring twice during the tournament.

In the subsequent three years following the tournament, the Italian has missed 80 matches due to a succession of injury problems during his spell with Juventus.

Federico Chiesa in Italy training

Despite this, the 26-year-old has managed to score 18 times for the Old Lady, while also chipping in with 13 assists, showing that he can be effective when the winger is fit and healthy.

Unfortunately, these injuries have made consistency a problem, something which Salah has exuded during his time at Anfield.

Indeed, the Egyptian star has registered a stunning 303 goal contributions – 213 goals and 90 assists – across 351 matches for Liverpool, a figure which Slot will surely find difficult to replace once Salah does leave Merseyside.

Is Chiesa the answer? Judging by his recent record, perhaps not. Might the Dutchman have signed a far greater alternative this summer instead? As Pedro Neto was linked with a move to the club.

Liverpool missed out on dream Chiesa alternative this summer

At the start of the month, rumours were rife that Liverpool were keen on signing Neto from Wolverhampton Wanderers before the window closed.

The winger was valued at £60m and this looked like a figure out of what Slot was willing to spend. Neto joined Chelsea instead a few weeks ago, and it looks like an opportunity missed by the club.

The Portuguese gem was hailed as a “pace monster” by analyst Ben Mattinson, with this trait allowing him to regularly beat his opposition man with ease, creating chances galore for his teammates.

Indeed, last season in the Premier League, Neto may have only scored two goals in 20 matches for the Old Gold, but he managed to register nine assists, create seven big chances while averaging 1.9 key passes and 1.9 successful dribbles per game, indicating that his lack of goals wouldn’t have been a problem given his other skills.

When compared to his positional peers in Europe’s top five leagues, Neto ranked in the top 1% for assists (0.61) and in the top 6% for progressive carries (5.78) per 90 over the previous 365 days.

Plenty of evidence to suggest the former Wolves star would have been a solid acquisition for Slot ahead of the current season, especially given his success in the Premier League already, unlike Chiesa.

With Neto also potentially better suited to filling Salah's shoes on the right flank, as a natural left-footer, will Slot regret not making a more concrete move for the winger? Only time will tell.

Ben Raine inflicts pain as Warwickshire slide to 87 all out

Mark Wood also in wickets before Durham openers overhaul meagre total

Paul Edwards29-Apr-2021

Ben Raine claimed five wickets for two runs in his first 39 balls•Getty Images

Going home is always a risk. “Will people remember me?” a returning traveller asks. “Will they remember me only too well,” is occasionally the next question. Somehow, though, such undertakings are not so perilous in the North East. Loyalties are so deep-rooted in this part of England that they can never quite be betrayed; when people come back it is often seen as a natural progression. And it is for days like this that the Sunderland-born pair Scott Borthwick and Ben Raine returned to Durham and to the places they love best of all.In truth Borthwick had little to do except toss a coin, choose to field, rotate his seamers and take a slip catch. Raine, on the other hand, can rarely have bowled more effectively than he did when taking his first five wickets for two runs in 28 balls as Warwickshire’s batters struggled dreadfully on a pitch containing fewer demons than their response suggested. Helped by Mark Wood, who was playing his first Championship match since September 2018, Raine dismissed five of the top eight in the visitors’ order as Will Rhodes’ side subsided to 87 all out. And just to complete a day that could barely have gone better for Borthwick, Alex Lees and Will Young overhauled that total just before the close. All these delights for home supporters were delayed by a substance rarely seen at cricket grounds this April: the soft refreshing rain beloved of the hymnist Jane Montgomery Campbell who, in 1862, loosely translated Matthias Claudius’s harvest lyric “Wir pflügen und wir streuen” into, “We plough the fields and scatter”. Play did not start until noon and an hour later Warwickshire’s batters returned to the pavilion for lunch perhaps wondering why there had been such a rush. Surely mid-June would have been early enough? If so, it was a good point, well made. The portents for the innings looked grim as early as the fourth over when Rob Yates had his off stump smacked back by a ball from Wood that kept spelunkingly low. Six overs later, after surviving a leg before shout that might have had Russell Warren’s finger twitching, Hanuma Vihari was on his way when attempting to work Raine to leg. Two overs later, Rhodes attempted the same trick off the same bowler with the same thud into the pad. Just before lunch Matt Lamb was bowled when he played inside a ball from Wood that held its own. That left Warwickshire on 22 for 4 and one imagines the away dressing room was hardly a place of jollity and merriment. The break in play did not interrupt the pattern of the game. Seven balls after the resumption Sam Hain played no stroke at a ball from Raine which tracked back just enough to hit his off pole. “Sam Hain’s disdain was mainly tamed by Raine,” murmured someone and suddenly we had a Broadway musical on our hands. But Durham’s bowlers, like the big ships for which a big river in this land was once famous, were not to be diverted or delayed. Lerner and Loewe would have to wait their turn. For the collapse was in full spate. Michael Burgess, Danny Briggs and Tim Bresnan all departed for five runs in the space of four overs, and only Briggs, who chipped a catch to Chris Rushworth at mid-on, deviated from the fast-established pattern. At this point in the early afternoon, all sorts of feats were noted and all manner of records threatened. Raine’s figures read 6.3-5-2-5 and Warwickshire were 30 for 8, in danger of recording their lowest total since they were skittled by ‘Charlie’ Blythe and Frank Woolley at Tonbridge in 1913 or by Bill Copson at Derby in 1932.Instead of such mighty dramatics we had a sensible partnership between Craig Miles and Liam Norwell, whose batting was uncluttered by subtlety or stylish pretension. Good balls were left alone if possible; pitched-up deliveries were driven or pulled into the deep field. Over an hour passed and 52 runs were added before Miles edged Brydon Carse to Borthwick at slip and Norwell nicked the same bowler to Poynter. The total of 87 was Warwickshire’s lowest against Durham but somehow it seemed like abundance. Raine finished the piece with 5 for 9 from 13 overs. The end of Warwickshire’s innings was immediately followed by the tea and the realisation that 45 overs were still to be bowled. What followed in the evening might do just as much to determine the shape of the match as the dramatics of the first two sessions.Perhaps it has. Lees is now well-established and well-regarded at the Riverside, perhaps rather more so than he was at Headingley. His unbroken stand of 88 with Young offered Warwickshire’s batters a close-up view of what can be achieved on this pitch by tight techniques and discrimination. This latter quality allowed the openers to climb into the loose stuff sent down, most egregiously by Craig Miles. Norwell and Oliver Hannon-Dalby, by contrast, rarely leaked runs but their side is already deep in trouble. Beating Essex may seem straightforward when compared to getting anything but the odd bonus point out of this game.
