O acordo entre Flamengo e Havan, anunciado nesta segunda-feira, reacendeu a discussão a respeito da aproximação do clube com o governo de Jair Bolsonaro (sem partido). Afinal, Luciano Hang, um dos fundadores e atual dono da rede de lojas, é um dos grandes apoiadores do presidente da República. Reflexo do ambiente político vivido no Brasil, a torcida rubro-negra também se dividiu em manifestações contrárias e a favor do novo patrocinador. O Conselho Deliberativo do clube da Gávea votará nesta sexta a aprovação da parceria.

Diante disso, o LANCE! ouviu especialistas a respeito do tema sobre quais podem ser os benefícios e malefícios à imagem do Flamengo com o novo patrocínio. Abaixo, a reportagem relembra episódios em que a gestão de Rodolfo Landim esteve próxima do governo do presidente Jair Bolsonaro.

– Os dirigentes precisam colocar em uma balança a responsabilidade pela saúde financeira da instituição e o cuidado com toda a representatividade envolvida no clube para fazer aquilo que se espera deles: tomar uma boa decisão – avaliou Marco Sirangelo, mestre em Gestão Esportiva pela Universidade de Loughborough (Inglaterra) e bacharel em Administração de Empresas pela FGV.

– O acordo de patrocínio com a Havan marcou de vez o alinhamento do Flamengo com o governo de Bolsonaro. E não se trata de uma aproximação devido a interesses, mas por alinhamento ideológico. A diretoria rubro-negra toma uma atitude arriscada – afirmou Rodrigo Monteiro, professor de Sociologia da UFF/IUPERJ.

“Na verdade, as associações de clubes de futebol com governos não chegam a ser novas. Na Espanha, o Real Madrid de Di Stefano ficou associado ao Franquismo (ditadura de Francisco Franco), a Seleção Brasileira teve sua imagem colada à Ditadura Militar. O próprio Getúlio Vargas fazia o uso político da Educação Física, para valorizar um povo fértil e saudável.

Há um risco de o Flamengo ficar mais associado a um governo que teve medidas escusas e errou no combate à pandemia de Covid-19. É algo que pode custar caro à imagem do clube. Claro que não acredito que cheguem a deixar de torcer para o Flamengo. Porém, há forte possibilidade de grupos que não gostam de Bolsonaro boicotarem os produtos por terem patrocínio da Havan, marca que apoia o bolsonarismo. Diante destas situações, rubro-negros ainda terão outro desafio: explicar às futuras gerações a razão da diretoria ter se aproximado de um governo com tantas controvérsias.”

1. Diante do atual cenário político, que “divide o país”, quais são os cuidados que um clube deve ter ao associar a sua imagem a uma marca?

A associação entre um clube de futebol e uma marca passa por diversos pontos interessantes. Sob o ponto de vista do clube, existe um lado puramente racional e outro lado com aspectos que não são diretamente econômicos. No primeiro aspecto, é sempre importante que o clube consiga negociar suas propriedades comerciais, tendo em vista que mesmo em anos não-pandêmicos (que dirá em um!), o futebol é uma atividade com fontes de receita relativamente restritas, basicamente formadas pelos direitos de TV + bilheteria e sócio torcedor + venda de jogadores + propriedades comerciais, e mesmo assim com muita dificuldade para fechar a conta no fim da temporada.

Do ponto de vista não necessariamente racional, um clube de futebol é uma instituição que carrega muito simbolismo e tem no sentimento de pertencimento com seus torcedores um fator chave. Justamente por não ser um aspecto necessariamente econômico, esse ponto de vista simbólico é menos explorado do que deveria pelos clubes, na minha opinião, mas é evidente que um dirigente responsável precisa sempre ponderar todos os lados na hora de tomar uma decisão de se associar a uma determinada marca. Ou seja, mesmo não sendo uma decisão fácil, os dirigentes precisam colocar em uma balança a responsabilidade pela saúde financeira da instituição e o cuidado com toda a representatividade envolvida no clube para fazer aquilo que se espera deles: tomar uma boa decisão.

2. Deixando de lado o valor contratual do acordo, de que forma uma parceria pode gerar benefícios ou malefícios a um clube, no caso o Flamengo?

Acredito que uma parceria saudável é aquela que satisfaz todos os lados envolvidos nela. Ou seja, do lado da marca é importante que ela obtenha os retornos de mídia, reconhecimento, conversão de vendas e/ou de novos clientes que estão atrelados à estratégia de patrocínio, enquanto o clube também consiga se valorizar como um bom agente expositor e sistematicamente possa obter melhores contratos.

Dessa forma, é sempre importante que exista sinergia entre as partes e o que impacto gerado pela parceria seja positivo. Evitar um cenário contrário é bastante importante aos clubes. E aqui vale uma ressalva, pois os valores praticados pelo mercado do futebol brasileiro hoje são semelhantes e, em alguns casos, até inferiores ao que era praticado há 10 anos. Além disso, o perfil das marcas patrocinadoras mudou bastante – se antes era comum observarmos grandes empresas multinacionais nas camisas dos clubes, hoje em dia nos acostumamos a ver grandes clubes sem parceiros e marcas muitas vezes desconhecidas nas camisas, isso enquanto as principais ligas europeias permanecem ostentando marcas globais. Isso é um indício que a gestão irresponsável dos clubes e o produto futebol brasileiro como um todo não se desenvolveu como poderia.

3. Para a parceria com a Havan ser oficializada, resta a aprovação do Conselho Deliberativo. Em tempo de redes sociais, qual deve ser o peso de dados das redessociais – de aprovação ou desaprovação após o anúncio de um patrocínio, neste caso – devem ser utilizados para dar continuidade aos planos? É possível utilizar essasinformações de forma estratégica?

Sem dúvidas. Para o bem e para o mal, as redes sociais diminuíram a distância entre o clube e seus torcedores, e o monitoramento do comportamento de seus fãs é capaz de gerar conclusões muito valiosas. De qualquer forma, é necessário traquejo aos tomadores de decisão e também conhecimento do ambiente das redes sociais para que os interesses do clube sempre estejam acima de eventuais discussões.

Da mesma forma, caso uma análise meticulosa envolvendo os comentários nas redes sociais identifique que o novo patrocínio possa prejudicar a imagem do clube de forma considerável, essa é uma informação que precisa ser considerada, assim como a informação de que as receitas do clube reduziram 20% em 2020 e o déficit anual superou os R$ 100 milhões, apenas para citar alguns exemplos.

4. Esta não é a primeira aproximação da atual gestão do Flamengo com o governo de Jair Bolsonaro. Já houve alinhamento das partes na questão da MP do Mandante, doretorno do futebol em meio à pandemia e visitas do presidente da República a treino em Brasília. A rejeição ao presidente, segundo a pesquisa mais recente da DataFolha, alcançou 54%. Qual deve ser a postura institucional do clube para que não cole sua imagem a de um governo sem abrir mão de seus interesses?

Não é nada difícil associar o posicionamento da atual diretoria do Flamengo com os do atual presidente. Acrescento a isso o fato do Flamengo ser o clube com mais torcedores no país e estar em evidência esportiva após os últimos anos de muito sucesso. Tudo isso já seria motivo para que o clube estivesse despertando opiniões contrárias dos demais torcedores de futebol, mas ainda há o agravante de alinhamento com um governo que, para dizer o mínimo, é bastante polêmico e rejeitado pela maioria dos brasileiros.

O acordo com a Havan corrobora também com essa narrativa, pois mais do que alinhada com o governo, seu fundador é um símbolo concreto do Bolsonarismo.

De todo modo, é incomum vermos clubes com posicionamento político institucional em nosso país, fazendo com que a postura de seus dirigentes sejam uma representação disso. E novamente, cabe aos tomadores de decisão encontrarem caminhos que julguem ser os melhores para os interesses de seus clubes. Se formos analisar, o Flamengo conseguiu um bom contrato com uma empresa cujo dono tem alinhamento com o governo. Será que a proximidade do Flamengo com Bolsonaro também foi um fator para atrair o interesse da marca? Mas até que ponto essa associação do clube com um governo que tem índices altos de rejeição pode prejudicar a marca do clube no futuro? É esperado que a tomada de decisão leve em conta esses aspectos, entre muitos outros nessa difícil discussão.

A MP DO MANDANTE

Desde 2019, a diretoria de Rodolfo Landim mantém uma relação próxima ao presidente da República, com visita oficial do clube ao Palácio do Planalto, e a presença de Jair Bolsonaro em partidas e até treino do Flamengo em Brasília. Um dos episódios foi em referência à Medida Provisória 984/2020, que passava os direitos de transmissão das partidas esportivas ao clube mandante do jogo.

O presidente do Flamengo, e outros dirigentes, foram à Brasília tratar do tema com Jair Bolsonaro. A MP do Mandante, como ficou conhecida, foi assinada pelo presidente da República em 18 de junho.A legislação vigorou por 120 dias. Na ocasião em que editou a MP, Jair Bolsonaro disse que o seu governo estava “democratizando o futebol” ao permitir que os clubes mandantes tenham a prerrogativa de negociar os direitos de transmissão doss jogos.

Como a MP não foi apreciada na Câmara. tampouco chegou ao Senado, voltou a vigorar o texto original da lei que diz que, para uma partida ser televisionada, o veículo de comunicação deve entrar em acordo com os dois times envolvidos.

OFlamengo, por meio de seu vice-presidente geral e jurídico, lamentou que a medida provisória não tenha sido votada no Congresso. Segundo Rodrigo Dunshee, uma “oportunidade histórica” foi perdida, mas o “filme não acabou”.

RETORNO DO FUTEBOL EM MEIO À PANDEMIA

Um dos clubes que trabalhou pelo retorno do futebol em maio à pandemia do coronavírus, ainda no primeiro semestre de 2020, o Flamengo buscou e teve o apoio do presidente Jair Bolsonaro. Em maio do ano passado, Rodolfo Landim foi ao encontro do presidente da República em Brasília. A reunião também contou com as presenças do Dr Márcio Tannure, chefe do departamento médico do Flamengo, e Alexandre Campello, então mandatário do Vasco.

E não foi a primeira vez que Bolsonaro esteve reunido com dirigentes do clube da Gávea. Emfevereiro de 2020, no Palácio da Alvorada, o presidente do país recebeu a direção rubro-negra, além de Jorge Jesus, para debater a respeito de mudanças legislativas para o futebol brasileiro, como o tema “clube-empresa”.

PRESENÇA EM JOGOS E TREINOS DO FLAMENGO

A proximidade resultou em presença de Jair Bolsonaro em vários jogos do Flamengo ao longo dos últimos anos. Seja em Brasília, quando o Rubro-Negro atua no Mané Garrincha, seja no Maracanã, casa do clube no Rio de Janeiro.

Já em janeiro desde ano, o presidente do Brasil foi a um treino do Flamengo em Brasília, quando o time de Rogério Ceni estava na capital por conta da partida contra o Palmeiras, no Mané Garrincha e foi recebido por atletas e dirigentes.

Fundado em 1974, o time é da cidade de Piripiri, no Piauí, e a data na qual foi fundado e que o nomeia, é uma homenagem à data na qual é comemorada a emancipação da cidade, cujaprefeitura, inclusive, é a patrocinadora do clube.

As cores do clube são fruto de uma história peculiar.Um dos fundadores do clube, o ex-atleta Luiz Cavalcante, trouxe do Recife o primeiro jogo de camisas para o time. O uniforme trazido por ele era uma réplica do uniforme do Náutico, de Pernambuco e, assim, o 4 de Julho incorporou o vermelho e branco como suas cores principais.

O Gavião Colorado (apelido do clube) se profissionalizou somente em 1988, 14 anos após ser fundado e se tornou tetracampeão do Campeonato Piauiense, levantando a taça nos anos de 1992, 1993, 2011 e voltando a ser campeão estadual em 2020.

Na Copa do Brasil deste ano, o clube do Piauí eliminou um time da Série A, o Cuiabá, na segunda fase do torneio. A partida foi em jogo único, disputado noEstádio Lindolfo Monteiro, que fica em Teresina e pertence ao River do Piauí.

Contra o São Paulo, o 4 de Julho também não jogará em seu estádio, oaArena Ytacoatiara, em Piripiri. A partida será realizada no estádioEstádio Governador Alberto Tavares Silva, o Albertão, na cidade de Teresina.

A bola rola nesta terça-feira (1), às 21h30 e o jogo marca o primeiro duelo entre as duas equipes nesta fase da competição. Os times voltam a se enfrentar na próxima terça-feira (8), no Estádio do Morumbi, em São Paulo.

West Indies managed to slow India down enough in the second half of their innings to set up an eventually easy chase in the dew. On a slow surface, it might have appeared India had done well to reach 170, but the dew had a significant say with the ball beginning to skid on in the night. Lendl Simmons saw the chase through with 67* off 45 but not without powerful assists from three left-hand batsmen who negated India’s spinners: Evin Lewis, Shimron Hetmyer and Nicholas Pooran. Between them, the three left-hand batsmen made 101 off 67 balls.Like West Indies were with the wides in the first game, India were profligate in the field. Both Simmons and Lewis were dropped before they got going, and ground fielders also let more than a couple of balls slip through their hands in dewy conditions.Signs of slow pitch
Sheldon Cottrell got off to an ordinary start with six runs off wides in the first over, but signs were there that this was a slow pitch not conducive for power hitting. It was a funky piece of captaincy when Kieron Pollard brought himself on in the seventh over. Data would tell you to bowl Hayden Walsh’s legspin against Rohit Sharma. On this pitch, though, Pollard’s cutters into the pitch worked, and he conceded just three. Then he gave himself another over, and Dube had by now got used to the pace of the pitch. He hit three sixes in Pollard’s over, but there was a byplay involved. After being hooked for a six, Pollard switched to bowling wide outside Dube’s reach. A harsh second wide call meant Pollard changed his plans, and Dube made full use of it. Brought on belatedly, Walsh made an immediate impact with the wicket of Dube third ball. Kesrick Williams had his own back on Kohli after the notebook came flying at him in the first match. He saw Kohli run down the wicket, ran his fingers on the ball, and had him caught at short third man. This time he used his finger to shush everyone up.Rishabh Pant found a way to score 33* off 22 on this slow pitch, but around him West Indies managed to apply the choke on. Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar all fell trying to force the pace. Between them Williams and Walsh conceded 58 in eight overs for four wickets. The chase got off to a tense start with the new ball sitting in the surface. Even Washington managed to turn the new ball. It is never a good sign when you are chasing, but the dew was the wildcard here. Even before the wildcard could be drawn, the openers felt the pressure to try low-percentage shots. They were 23 after four overs. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, playing for a World Cup spot, charged in. His knuckle ball drew the mis-hit from Simmons, but Washington dropped the skier at mid-off. Two balls later, Pant reprieved Lewis. This was a difficult chance because the batsman had backed away, the bowler had followed him, and the keeper had to be heading down the leg side. But Pant did get both hands to it, and failed to cushion it as he came down, with the ball spilling out. Kohli, fielding at the boundary, was seen telling the crowd off for their reaction to yet another wicketkeeping error from Pant.Flood gates open
That was just the luck West Indies needed. Starting next over, the bats kept swinging and connecting sweetly. All but one of the next 14 overs produced at least one boundary. That one over was when Washington finally got the better of Lewis, building dots and then getting the eventual stumping. This was the 10th over, and India had yet to use Jadeja on a surface that was likely to help him. The reason for it was the presence of Lewis. So they took the cue, and dropped Brandon King down the order, letting the left-hand batsmen play havoc.Hetmyer took five balls to hit his first six, Pooran took three. Neither Yuzvendra Chahal nor Jadeja was effective on what had now become a skiddy surface thanks to the dew. And the ball travelled off the bat. West Indies continued to bat smartly. Simmons did hit one six off Chahal, but other than that he was happy to let the left-hand batsmen take strike against bowlers who turn the ball away from right-hand batsmen. Against offspin and pace, Simmons was brutal.By the time India went back to pace, West Indies needed 44 off the last five overs. Pooran took apart Bhuvneshwar’s comeback over, settling the chase then and there. Finishing touches were applied smoothly.

Celtic may have found their ideal successor to Mark Lawwell as the club's chief scout, according to a fresh update regarding the club's behind-the-scenes work.

The Hoops lost a prominent figure at the beginning of the month, with Lawwell leaving the club after two years in charge as their head of first-team scouting and recruitment. He is the son of chairman Peter Lawwell, but his reputation had taken a hit after some inconsistent work in the transfer market.

Celtic officially announced earlier in March that both he and lead first-team scout Joe Dudgeon had left Celtic "to pursue fresh challenges", with the pair immediately placed "on a period of gardening leave."

In fact, one such negative story surrounding Lawwell was related to the arrival of Adam Idah on loan during the January transfer window, with the striker arriving from Norwich City until the end of the season. Unfortunately, the former Hoops transfer guru failed to ensure that there was an option to sign him permanently in his contract, meaning he could now go elsewhere instead of staying on at Parkhead this summer.

It was an error that arguably summed up Lawwell's shortcomings in his role, and the search is now on to find a superior replacement who can improve the Scottish Premiership champions' work when it comes to bringing in the right players.

Celtic eyeing "interesting" Lawwell replacement

According to a new report from reliable journalist Mark Hendry for Football Scotland, Neil McGuinness could make a return to Celtic as Lawwell's replacement, having been first-team scout for six years in the past.

"He was at the club as a first team scout back between 2010 and 2016 before moving to Qatar. He knows the club and how its run considering all the main board members are essentially still in place!

"He has also built, over the past five years or so, a winning team with Columbus Crew and has a proven track record in unearthing gems. He was seemingly the real main man who identified Virgil van Dijk for Celts and would be an interesting appointment."

The one thing that immediately jumps out from Hendry's update is the fact that he brought Virgil van Dijk to Celtic, highlighting his eye for a top player.

The Dutchman has since gone on to have an incredible career at Liverpool, not only winning many major trophies, but also standing out as one of the best centre-backs of his generation, if not the best. McGuinness even once spoke about finding the Reds superstar, explaining the strengths he saw in him.

"Virgil was more of a young kid finding his feet in the first-team. I remember going over to watch Virgil, and I specifically picked a game where he was playing against Vitesse, away. The striker at the time for Vitesse was Wilfred Bony.

"You’re up against a lot of big lumps when you play in Britain. A lot of the teams you play against, specifically in Scotland, if they are going to attack you, it’s going to be a long ball approach."

Ele será liberado para fechar até dezembro com o time sul-coreano, que terá uma opção de compra no término do contrato.

Vale lembrar que este não foi o primeiro movimento do Palmeiras com o atacante. Recentemente, Gabriel havia estendido seu contrato com o clube por mais uma temporada, passando a ter vínculo válido até dezembro de 2022.

Destaque do Paysandu em 2021, o centroavante foi apelidado de ”Gabigol do Pará” pelo bom momento que vive no Papão da Curuzu. Na equipe desde o início da temporada, Gabriel já soma cinco gols em nove partidas. Com apenas 202 minutos em campo, possui média de um tento a cada 40 minutos.

Over the years, there have been lots of success stories in which players who thrive in the Championship, get a big move to the Premier League and do equally as well in England’s top flight.

Liverpool know this too well having signed Andy Robertson from Hull City in 2017 after 42 second-tier outings for the Tigers.

Perhaps the best example of recent times is James Maddison. The Spurs midfielder spent two seasons in the Championship with Norwich City, and his second campaign in particular was superb. Maddison scored 14 goals and registered eight assists for the Canaries, which earned him a big move to Leicester City in 2018.

Aside from Maddison, players such as Jack Grealish with Aston Villa, and Mason Mount on loan at Derby County, have spent time below the top-flight, something which has proven to be a massive benefit in helping to shape their careers.

Currently, the Championship is filled with lots of exciting talent, some of whom could well follow a similar career path to the likes of Maddison and hit new heights with a move to the Premier League.

However, there is one player above all others who is taking the second tier by storm this season, and many fans consider him to be the best player in the Championship at the minute.

Liverpool eyeing Championship sensation

The man in question here is Leeds United winger Crycensio Summerville, who is having a phenomenal season so far. The Netherlands U21 international currently sits on 17 goals and eight assists in 39 games for Leeds, as they push for automatic promotion back to the Premier League.

However, it could be that the winger is destined to play football at a higher level next season, regardless of whether Leeds manage to get promoted.

Summerville is said to be of interest to some Premier League clubs in the summer, with Liverpool supposedly keen on the winger according to a report from Football Transfers. The 21-year-old could be the subject of a £45m bid from the Reds, with the Elland Road outfit putting a pricey tag on his head.

If Liverpool appoint Sporting’s Ruben Amoirm as their new manager, the man currently favourite to take the soon-to-be vacant Anfield hot seat, he could well want to bring Summerville into the club.

Last summer, Amorim brought Victor Gyokeres to Sporting from Championship Coventry, and he might decide to shop in the second tier once again.

Amorim's next EFL project

Summerville and Gyokeres are nothing like each other as footballers; Summerville is a quick, direct winger, described by football analyst Ben Mattinson on X as a “one-vs-one monster”.

In contrast, Mattinson describes Sporting striker Gyokeres as a “powerhouse”. The Swede is a classic centre-forward, with superb hold-up play and clinical in front of goal.

However, where they are similar is in their reputation of being the best player in the Championship. Summerville’s goal involvements in the second tier this season currently sit at 25 in 39 games. Last season, Gyokeres scored 21 goals and registered ten assists for Coventry, but couldn’t quite drag them up to the Premier League.

Should Amorim join Liverpool, we could well see him look to bring Summerville in, as his latest EFL project signing. The Dutchman, however, would cost almost double what Sporting paid for Gyokeres, with Leões splashing £20m on the centre forward.

It is certainly easy to see how Summerville would fit into Amorim’s favoured 3-4-3 system. Whilst on paper, Summerville may be a winger, Amorim likes his wide men to act as number 10s with the ball. The 22-year-old is not much dissimilar to Sporting’s right-winger, Marcus Edwards, who is also a great ball carrier and an explosive dribbler in one-on-one situations.

According to Fbref, Edwards averages 4.73 progressive carries per 90 minutes this season, which puts him in the top 10%, whereas Summerville makes 5.08 progressive carries per 90 minutes, placing him in the best 6%, as per the same source.

Their carries into the penalty area per 90 minutes are also very similar. Edwards averages 2.26 which ranks him in the top 6%, and Summerville averages 2.53, putting him in the top 4%. Both are superb dribblers, and Summerville’s goal involvement output is also better than Edwards’, who has just four goals and four assists in Liga Portugal this season.

It is easy to see how Summerville could fit into Amroim’s system if both end up moving to Liverpool next season. It would certainly be an exciting signing for the Reds, and they could have a ready-made Amorim-style winger who the Portuguese manager can turn into his next EFL success story.

Lasith Embuldeniya took four as well as Pakistan folded for 191, before Sri Lanka limped to 64 for 3 at stumps

A flat surface had been expected at Karachi. Instead the first day delivered 13 wickets, eight of them in a manic final session, as Pakistan first nosedived to 191 all out, losing their last six for 24 runs, before Sri Lanka limped their way to 64 for 3 at the close.The day belonged to all manner of bowlers – speedsters, seam-bowling wizards, ambling spinners – but if one stood out from the crowd, it was Sri Lanka’s Lahiru Kumara. He touched 150kph at times in the morning, and kept his pace up all day, sending down hostile bouncers in stretches, and teasing the outside edge at other times. He had most success going full, straight and fast, however, nailing Abid Ali and Yasir Shah lbw, and cleaning up Mohammad Rizwan with an inducker on his way to 4 for 49 from 18 overs.Lasith Embuldeniya, the left-arm spinnner, was the perfect foil, recovering from a wayward first session to settle into an alluring rhythm later on. He had excellent drift from the outset, but once he’d settled into his work after lunch, he had flight, dip, bounce and spin at his command as well. He took the vital wicket of Babar Azam early in the second session, getting one to spit past the face of his bat as he ran down the pitch at him, Niroshan Dickwella completing an easy stumping. Just before that middle session finished, Embuldeniya also trapped Haris Sohail in front of the stumps with another sharply-turning delivery. Taking two tail-end wickets as well, he finished with 4 for 71.Their middle and lower orders having collapsed abysmally either side of tea, Pakistan’s bowlers were then called upon to haul their side back into the game. Hunting as a pack in the dying light, Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah both delivered searing pace – Naseem the quicker of the two, frequently breaching the 145kph mark. Shaheen made the first breakthrough, nicking off Oshada Fernando in the seventh over with a full delivery outside off stump that prompted a fatal drive.Mohammad Abbas had perhaps been a little underwhelming in his first spell, sharing the new ball with Shaheen, but was at his conniving best in the second. He angled one across Dimuth Karunaratne before jagging it back off the seam – Karunaratne managing only to drag the ball back onto his stumps after attempting to cut. Abbas’ next dismissal – the one to round off the day – was superbly characteristic of his best bowling. He sent a length ball just outside off stump at Kusal Mendis, who is especially vulnerable in that area, wobbled it away, and drew an outside edge that flew low to second slip.Barely 90 minutes previous, Pakistan had been reeling, after their sudden surrender with the bat. By the end of the day, they could see a path back into this game.The collapse had been partially the result of good Sri Lanka bowling, but perhaps it did not need to be quite so dramatic. Pakistan had seemed to be building a decent score, at 167 for 4, when Haris was nailed in front by Embuldeniya. Then first thing after tea, Kumara delivered the over of the day to really set Pakistan’s decline in motion.He sneaked a ball between bat and pad to rattle Rizwan’s stumps, then next ball hit Yasir Shah on the boot to effect a plumb lbw. Sri Lanka would lose a review trying for a third wicket a few balls later, but Kumara nevertheless completed a double-wicket maiden that transformed the outlook of the game. From then on, it was a question of how many Asad Shafiq would manage to squeeze out in the company of the tail. It would turn out it wasn’t many.Shafiq, who made 63, was day one’s top scorer, and was the only other half-centurion after Babar had lit up the morning with 60 off 96 balls. Through those early sessions, Pakistan’s batsmen looked largely comfortable, and there didn’t seem to be much to fear from the surface. Babar drove majestically as usual, and ran down the pitch once to clobber Embuldeniya over long on for six. His dismissal was almost certainly the result of telegraphing another advance against Embuldeniya, who saw the batsman coming and slipped in a shorter ball that spun.When Sri Lanka’s third wicket fell with about 15 minutes to go till stumps, Embuldeniya came out as the nightwatchman. He will have Angelo Mathews for company when play resumes on day two.

– A gente sabe que vai ser um jogo muito difícil. Eles precisam vencer, a gente quer vencer, terminar bem, classificar em primeiro. Temos de colocar nosso objetivo acima do deles, treinando bastante, para que a gente consiga o nosso melhor e vença mais uma partida na Copa América.
