Mark Stoneman commands Scarborough respect with restorative ton

Opener hands Surrey advantage but Yorkshire bowlers rewarded for chipping away on soporific day

At Scarborough’s second-hand cricket books and memorabilia stall, at the last time of checking, a £25 Doulton China toby jug of Fred Trueman had still gone unsold. Fred would have not have survived a fairly sedate pitch like this one without a chunter or two. “I’ve seen more life in a tramp’s vest,” was one of his most famous utterings, which admittedly was not very PC in the 1950s and is even less PC now.On a day that promised to be groaning with runs, the Yorkshire loyalists who had made the pilgrimage to Scarborough knew they might have to withstand an earnest day’s cricket. Around the country, the weather had stabilised and so had the scores. It was just a matter of which Surrey batsman would make them pay. That accolade fell to Mark Stoneman, who made exactly 100 before he was unfortunate to be adjudged caught down the leg side of Duanne Olivier, not just a strangle but a strangle that deflected off the sweat band of his right wrist as Olivier browbeat shoulder-high bounce from a slowish surface.Scarborough was first claimed to have restorative properties in the 17th century even though the spring water tasted somewhat bitter and turned the rocks the colour of a new cricket ball. Understandably, by the 1960s, tastes had changed – so, the story goes, had the water – but Stoneman breathed in the enlivening Scarborough air and achieved only his second Championship hundred since he was dropped by England early in the 2018 summer.Despite sharing the satisfaction of Surrey’s Championship win last season, it has been a tough route back. This was another nuggety innings, occasionally lightened as he drove overpitched deliveries, and unlike his colleagues he made his start pay. Long before the end, Stoneman’s strength from backward point to the cover region was shining through – 10 of his 13 boundaries came in that region. His hundred was secured in slightly fortunate fashion, however, two balls before he was dismissed, when he edged Olivier uppishly wide of first slip.He admitted that an injury to his captain, Rory Burns, when Yorkshire visited Guildford last month, had probably spared him from a spell in the Seconds. “I earned a bit of a reprieve when Rory went down with a bad back,” he said. “I think I was going to get a tap on the shoulder then.”A walk around the ground at Scarborough is a fraternal wander down memory lane. So it was a day also lightened by chewing the cud with old friends (“you didn’t get my bowling off the square once in 30 years”) or fielding the occasional quiz question, such as the last batsman with three initials to make a Championship century for Yorkshire before WAR Fraine, who struck his maiden hundred 24 hours earlier. Peter (PSP) Handscomb was the answer to that, although as he was an Australian it was tantamount to cheating.Stoneman was born not too far north from here, up the coast in Newcastle, and spent much of his career at Durham. Enough north-easterners make the trip for that to qualify him for a measure of respect. His century was spritely enough, too, of 167 balls, but it was a soporific summer’s day by Scarborough standards – the seagulls were lolling contentedly in the calm shallows of North Bay – and more than one spectator curled up on the grass on the boundary edge and slumbered through a tightly-contested match. The next eight Surrey batsmen were dismissed between 24 and 43 as Yorkshire were rewarded for their diligence. Surrey must have had designs on 400-plus, and at 182 for 2 looked as if they would achieve it, only to be pegged back to a first-innings lead of 35. Two wickets in each of the first two sessions were followed by six after tea with only Steve Patterson, among the frontline attack, missing out. Before lunch, Ben Coad had Dean Elgar playing on to his stumps as he tried to leave alone before David Willey had Scott Borthwick caught at first slip by Tom Kohler-Cadmore – his 28th catch in all formats for Yorkshire this season. “Best slipper in the country,” said a spectator beneath the Tea Room, at which point Kohler-Cadmore promptly dropped Ryan Patel.Yorkshire struck in successive overs after lunch when Patel was caught behind by Jonny Tattersall off South Africa’s left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj – his first White Rose wicket on debut on the way to 3 for 75 – before Stoneman fell to Olivier. It looked as if Ben Foakes and Sam Curran might put Surrey on top, but three wickets in the first 15 overs of the second new ball restored equilibrium with Foakes and Curran both falling to excellent diving catches by Jack Leaning.Yorkshire’s short-term loan deal for Maharaj, who will bowl last on a wearing surface, might yet serve them well. “He’s no Phil Hart,” somebody said, after watching an over or two. Hart played three matches for Yorkshire, but he’s a good bloke and a proud Scarborian; that counts for a lot round here.

Luckhurst reveals exciting Dan Ashworth to Man Utd news from inside INEOS

On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Sir Jim Ratcliffe's acquisition of 25% of Manchester United had been ratified by the Premier League. Ratcliffe reached an agreement with the Glazer family in December but the deal had to go through the league's owners' and directors' test.

The “underwhelming” Man Utd signing who has seen his value crash by £31m

Erik ten Hag couldn’t revive his former star.

ByTom Lever Feb 14, 2024

The green light has now been received, and all that remains now is for the Football Association to rubber-stamp the deal too, which is expected to be a "formality".

Ratcliffe and INEOS, who will take control of the sporting operation at Old Trafford, have already poached Omar Berrada from rivals Manchester City as their new CEO, and have now turned their attention to finding a sporting director, with Newcastle's Dan Ashworth emerging as the top target. The Red Devils have yet to approach the Magpies, but are expected to move quickly from here to try and secure his services.

Ashworth wants to be part of United relaunch

Writing on X/Twitter, Samuel Luckhurst of the Manchester Evening News reported that "United want Dan Ashworth and Ashworth wants to join United" in an encouraging update.

In an attached article for the MEN, he reveals that figures inside INEOS are so confident of landing Ashworth that they haven't even "sounded out alternatives", instead viewing him as their "only target".

Ratcliffe attended meetings at Carrington last week to hold discussions over his planned restructure, and a sporting director is "expected to be the next significant appointment". If Ashworth does join, he'll have to serve a "lengthy spell of gardening leave" before he starts work, just like Berrada.

As for the future of incumbent football director John Murtough, there's a possibly that he'll be retained in a "more administrative role" but things are very much "in the balance" as it stands.

Ashworth must make signings like Antony a thing of the past

While Ashworth's job wouldn't focus solely on recruitment, it should very much be his top priority. Since Sir Alex Ferguson, who steered the club to a record 13 Premier League titles, retired in 2013, United have pumped over £1.5bn into their playing squad, with hardly any reward.

Antony

One player that sums up United's recruitment woes is Antony, who ranks as the sixth-most expensive addition in Premier League history following his €95m (£81m) arrival from Ajax in 2022 but has scored a meagre four goals in 44 top-flight appearances. This is exactly the kind of blunder Erik ten Hag's side need to avoid moving forward if they're to overhaul Pep Guardiola and City.

Southern Vipers hold nerve for two-wicket win after Danni Wyatt's 40

Chasing team lose 4 for 17 but Lightning’s target ultimately proves under-par

Southern Vipers made it two wins from two in the Kia Super League after narrowly prevailing over Loughborough Lightning at the Haslegrave Ground.Needing just 24 more with six wickets in hand in the 17th over, Vipers contrived to lose four wickets in the space of 16 deliveries as Lightning mounted a determined bid to deny them. But wicketkeeper Carla Rudd got them over the line by hitting offspinner Hayley Matthews for two on the leg side to complete a two-wicket win with just three balls to spare, chasing 136.England’s Danni Wyatt had earlier hit 40 off 33 balls with seven fours and West Indies star Stafanie Taylor 38 from 29 to put the Vipers chase on track.Lightning, for whom skipper Georgia Elwiss top-scored with 37, gave themselves a chance when England left-arm spinner Kirstie Gordon removed Suzie Bates and Tammy Beaumont in her first three deliveries after coming on in the eighth over with Vipers 48 without loss. But seven boundaries in the next three overs put Vipers back on course with 57 runs needed off the final nine overs.Earlier, openers Matthews and Amy Jones had given the Lightning innings a solid platform after Elwiss had won the toss and opted to bat first. With Jones in confident form after launching her KSL campaign with a half-century against Western Storm on Tuesday, and Matthews showing off her powerful hitting on the off side, the two put on 42 in the Powerplay overs before they were parted in the seventh over when Matthews was bowled behind her legs by Australian legspinner Amanda-Jade Wellington for 21.Thereafter, Lightning lost some momentum, as Jones was bowled off a bottom edge by Paige Scholfield for 24 and five overs passed without a boundary.Sri Lankan batsman Chamari Atapattu struggled to find gaps in the field and was leg before to Taylor’s offspin for 9 and the innings did not pick up again until the final six overs, as Mignon du Preez – dropped twice – helped Elwiss put on 29 in four overs, and some lusty hitting from Jenny Gunn saw the total swell by 27 off the final 13 deliveries, Gunn pulling Taylor for six over wide long-on.With a required run-rate of 6.8, Vipers knew they had no need to force the pace and at 48 without loss after seven overs, they were firmly in control. Two wickets in her first three balls by Gordon after drawing a blank in the opening match then dealt the Vipers a setback. She broke the Wyatt-Bates opening partnership via a catch at deep midwicket to remove the New Zealander and then combined brilliantly with wicketkeeper Jones to have England’s always-dangerous Beaumont out stumped without scoring. But Wyatt and Taylor then added 31 in four overs to keep the scoreboard moving.Atapattu had Wyatt well caught by Sarah Glenn at deep backward square-leg and Glenn herself trapped Taylor leg before with her legspin.Excellent ground fielding by Lucy Higham and Elwiss saw Thea Brookes and Scholfield run out as Vipers made things difficult for themselves towards the end before two more wickets fell in the penultimate over. But a six by Scholfield over long-on at the start of that over had swung the balance back in Vipers’ favour and Wellington began the final over, with seven needed, by sweeping Matthews for four.

Report shares new transfer update as Leeds plot Kalvin Phillips return

Leeds United, after coming from behind to shock Championship leaders Leicester City, now sit second on goal difference and within six points of the Foxes on course to win the title. On their way back to the Premier League at the first time of asking as things stand, reports suggest that promotion could see the Yorkshire club make a shock move in the transfer window.

Leeds United transfer news

As the summer transfer window approaches, the rumours have already arrived, with Leeds linked with the likes of Kilmarnock youngster Bobby Wales and Udinese wing-back Festy Ebosele in two deals that could boost Daniel Farke's side in the long-term future.

Meanwhile, the narrative on the pitch in recent weeks has been centred around the revival of Wilfried Gnonto. The young winger looked destined to leave in both the summer and in the January transfer window, with West Ham United reportedly interested in a move, but failed to get his departure. Staying put, Gnonto has finally shown glimpses of his best form ever since, scoring three goals in his last three games.

Wilfried Gnonto for Leeds United.

It is the type of Elland Road revival that others elsewhere may look on with promise, including Kalvin Phillips. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, the 49ers and Leeds have made a new midfielder one of their top priorities and will look to re-sign Phillips in a permanent deal this summer if they secure promotion.

The England international is currently on loan at West Ham, where he has struggled to regain the form he once showed in Yorkshire to earn his move to Manchester City in the first place.

A return to Leeds could be exactly what the midfielder needs to return to his best, however, especially as they look to make their mark on Premier League football once more.

"Excellent" Phillips needs Leeds return

A mistake on his debut in a draw Bournemouth, smashed 3-0 by Manchester United, on the end of a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Arsenal, before being sent off in a 2-0 defeat against Nottingham Forest, if anyone needs home comforts it is Phillips.

The midfielder's loan spell at the London Stadium was meant to prove Pep Guardiola wrong for limiting his opportunities at The Etihad, yet it's done anything but. And with the Euros coming up, Phillips may be starting to worry about his place under Gareth Southgate, despite the England manager's previous praise.

Southgate previously said: “He’s been excellent. To play in the enormity of the matches he did in the summer and play as well as he did is massive credit to him. He’s a very, very good player and he’s been a really important part of this – we’re 16 games unbeaten [in regulation time] now and he’s been a huge part of that.”

Of course, Phillips still has time to turn things around at West Ham, but a summer switch to Leeds could be the perfect way to really get back to his best in the familiar surroundings of Elland Road, making this one to watch.

Jasprit Bumrah is 'the most complete bowler in the world' – Virat Kohli

“He has absolute control of what he is doing. So when he steps out on the field, he knows how much he can contribute for the team”

ESPNcricinfo staff03-Sep-20193:38

Hanuma Vihari is the find of the series – Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli has called Jasprit Bumrah “the most complete bowler in world cricket”. His comments came at the end of a series in which Bumrah picked up 13 wickets in two Tests at an average of 9.23, including the third hat-trick in the format by an Indian.”There is not much you can say about Jasprit, the way he has been bowling,” Kohli said after India completed a 2-0 series win in the West Indies. “All we can say is we are really lucky to have him on our team.”Very rarely do you find a pack of bowlers who are hunting together. And bowling for each other, bowling in partnerships. If you see today, he had a bit of a niggle, but he came in and just bowled three overs in a spot, did the job for the team when he was in pain as well.”Virat Kohli on…

Concussion subs: “It’s very different because on that day you can play but when you come out the next day it’s a different situation altogether. AB [de Villiers] got hit in thre IPL this year, against Mumbai, against Jasprit [Bumrah] and then on the night he played and he was fine. And the next day he was dizzy waking up. If a guy has had a bad hit, that next day is critical and if he is not in a good shape, you cannot put out a guy when he is dizzy, it can get dangerous.”
India’s performance: “I think the find of the series has to be Hanuma Vihari. The way he has batted under pressure especially. And on a much more challenging wicket here in Jamaica than in Antigua, I think his skills set were outstanding, his temperament and techniques were top notch and he countered everything the oppositions threw at him. So very, very pleased with the way he has come about. And the bowlers outstanding as they were, Ajinkya Rahane as well, getting back into the runs, one of our top test players over the years – really, really happy to see everything coming along nicely.”

Watching Bumrah from the slips, Kohli says he sympathised with the batsman facing him. The 25-year old has only played 12 Tests but already has 62 wickets at 19.24.”It’s not all about going for wickets all the time, it’s about bowling in partnerships, but when he gets some kind of momentum, you can see what he can do in five-six overs with the new ball which we saw in the first innings [when he took the hat-trick],” Kohli said. “I haven’t seen many more lethal spells than that in the last couple of Tests, than those two spells by Bumrah, and as a batsman you feel, standing in slips, you can feel for the batsmen who are playing him, you know.ALSO READ: Captaincy is just a ‘c’ in front of your name – Kohli”He confuses you with angles, with swing, he’ll set up for the outswinger, then bowl the inswinger, and it’s coming at pace, and then he can hit you with bouncers as well. So I think he is the most complete bowler in world cricket right now.”Asked what made Bumrah the bowler he was, Kohli said it was the effort he put in to improve constantly.”It’s the mindset, when you put your mind to a certain thing, you strive towards it,” Kohli said. “He definitely wants to be the best bowler in the world, there is no question about it. He has moulded his life like that, he has moulded his discipline, his work ethic, the way he trains, the way he takes care of his diet, the way he bowls as much as he has to.Jasprit Bumrah is swarmed by team-mates after completing a hat-trick•Associated Press

“He has absolute control of what he is doing. So when he steps out on the field, he knows how much he can contribute for the team. It is really pleasing to see a guy who was tagged as a T20 specialist, he came in and took over the one-day scene, and now he is taking over Test cricket. He is proving people wrong that there is a set template for every format. If you have belief, you can play every format. I totally vouch for that as well. He definitely has the mindset to succeed in all three formats and wants to be the best in the world.”Asked about India playing Ravindra Jadeja ahead of R Ashwin as their lead spinner on this tour, Kohli said the left-armer’s control won him the spot.”It’s the control we can bank on with Jadeja,” he said. “He has probably been our most consistent and most accurate bowler away from India, and there is a reason why he is constantly playing in the eleven, because he gives you control even when the wicket is not supporting his bowling.”As a batsman, when the bowler is pitching balls in areas where you can get out constantly even when it’s not turning so much, he is always in the game, and that’s his USP, with the bat, with the ball, and in the field there is no one better than him in the world, so he is just in a great zone right now.”He is willing to contribute for the team all the time, and you can see he wants the ball. He wants to do the job for the team, and when a guy is bowling like that and when he is in that mindset, then your job becomes easier.”

Gabigol assume a artilharia do futebol brasileiro na temporada
