O’Neil could finally replace Neves in Wolves swoop for £7m ace

Wolverhampton Wanderers secured a point against Nottingham Forest over the weekend and heading into the busy festive period, the club currently occupy 13th position in the Premier League table.

Ties against West Ham United and Brentford before Christmas are certainly winnable, but the Old Gold will have to be at their best to secure three points in both matches.

Gary O’Neil will be hoping to get through the next few games unscathed heading into the January transfer window as it appears he is keen on a fellow Premier League midfielder…

Wolves transfer news – Josh Brownhill

According to the Mirror, the Molineux outfit are preparing a move for Burnley midfielder Josh Brownhill during the January transfer window, and they could secure his signature for a cut-price fee of just £7m.

Josh Brownhill in action for Burnley.

His contract is set to expire at the end of the current season, but the player and club are embroiled in a standoff at the moment and unless Burnley sell him in January, they will lose him for nothing.

He is valued at £20m, yet due to his contract scenario, £7m could well be enough to lure him to Wolves in the coming weeks.

Wolves could land Cunha upgrade by signing £15m gem who's like Kane

Wolves could look to sign an upgrade on Cunha in the January transfer window

ByRoss Kilvington Dec 7, 2023

The former Bournemouth manager could do with another midfielder and Brownhill may be an ideal replacement for former player Ruben Neves.

How Josh Brownhill compares to Ruben Neves

The Portuguese gem left Molineux during the summer in a £47m deal to join Al-Hilal, and it marked the end of a six-season stay in the Midlands for Neves.

The midfielder made over 250 appearances for the club while he helped establish them as a steady top-flight club after their promotion during the 2017/18 campaign.

The Old Gold have certainly missed his goals from midfield, as only two midfielders have found the back of the net during the current campaign, and O’Neil is clearly looking to sign a player who can chip in from the centre of the pitch.

Neves scored six times in the league last term, while Brownhill netted seven – albeit in the Championship – along with grabbing eight assists, and this type of player is exactly what the club need going forward.

During the 2023/24 season so far, the 27-year-old Brownhill has scored three Premier League goals and he currently ranks second in the squad for goals and assists (three), along with ranking third for key passes per game (0.8) and for tackles per game (1.7), showcasing his abilities across a range of metrics.

He has been impressive during his debut season in the top flight and a move to Wolves would allow him to continue this, especially as he could be filling the boots of Neves.

The midfielder was hailed as “brilliant” by Jack Cork in 2022 and O’Neil has an excellent chance of landing a player who may only get better for a reasonable fee in the coming weeks.

The move makes perfect sense and while the club signed Jean-Ricner Bellegarde and Boubacar Traore, while also adding Tommy Doyle on loan, none have managed to really replace Neves.

By signing Brownhill, they will sign a Premier League standard player for a fraction of his valuation, and it could turn into a shrewd investment by the club.

All-round Stoinis takes Melbourne Stars closer to semi-final spot

Chasing 135, Brisbane Heat could manage only 129 against the variations of Stoinis and Bravo

The Report by Andrew McGlashan27-Jan-2019

Marcus Stoinis dismisses Matt Renshaw•Getty Images

Melbourne Stars set themselves for a push into the BBL semi-finals with a superb bowling display which defended the lowest score successfully protected at the MCG and in turn left Brisbane Heat on the verge of being eliminated. The Heat played a significant hand in their own downfall with some poor shot selection but appeared to be on course at 4 for 111, needing 24 off 20 balls. However, Matt Renshaw was caught behind off the in-form Marcus Stoinis, who produced an outstanding all-round display, as he and Dwayne Bravo closed out the innings with skill. The Stars are now one of three teams on 12 points behind the runaway leaders Hobart Hurricanes and have a good chance of securing a home semi-final. The Heat started the night with five games to play but this defeat means they probably now need to win all four to progress.Stars slideThe Stars had a star-stubbed middle order but they couldn’t make the most of solid base provided the by the opening stand of 63 between Stoinis and Ben Dunk. After Stoinis was trapped lbw by Ben Cutting, Peter Handscomb picked out mid-off and Glenn Maxwell found fine leg. There were only six fours in the innings alongside three sixes as Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mitch Swepson proved hard to score off.Only one way to play?Although the target was modest, it was clear from the first innings that there would need to be some shrewd batting. That, though, is not always what you associate with the Heat who pack their top order with hitters and play the same way regardless. Max Bryant, who has been one of the breakout stars of this tournament, was threatening to make a mockery of conditions as he hit five boundaries in an 18-ball stay which should have given the Heat plenty of breathing space. But when he was caught at deep midwicket, Chris Lynn was lbw playing across the line to Adam Zampa and then Brendon McCullum found long-on when the required rate was still well within the realms of knocking the ball around. Worse followed when Alex Ross slapped a long-hop from Bravo straight to point and the Heat were 4 for 54 in the ninth over.Changing placesIt had been a contrasting 24 hours, or more, for Stoinis and Renshaw with the pair swapping places in Australia’s Test squad. Renshaw’s comeback lasted one squad in which he quickly moved down the pecking order. It was, therefore, to his credit that he produced a skilful and calm innings to put his team’s chase back on track. It was rarely pretty, but he worked the ball around effectively forming a steady partnership with Jimmy Peirson.Victory was there for the taking for the Heat, but Stoinis would have the final say. Trying to ramp a short delivery, Renshaw edged to the wicketkeeper and in Stoinis’ next over Peirson was taken by Maxwell at long-on. Against the variations of Stoinis and Bravo, the lower order could barely connect and only a penultimate ball boundary for Swepson got the margin as close as it was.

"Been a problem" – Sky pundit says Farke might simply not want Leeds gem

Leeds United are in a promising position as they continue their promotion charge; however, one man has landed himself in a difficult situation at Elland Road following latest developments, according to former Whites goalkeeper turned Sky Sports pundit Paul Robinson.

Leeds United look ahead to Ipswich Town…

Last weekend, Leeds and Coventry shared the spoils in a lively 1-1 draw at Elland Road, where Crysencio Summerville's opener was cancelled out by a Bobby Thomas reply, leaving Daniel Farke's men third in the Championship table on goal difference.

One of the main flashpoints during the match occurred at full-time, where Whites goalscorer Summerville refused to shake hands with Thomas, something which led to unsavoury scenes involving players on both sides before they were eventually separated.

It is understandable to see passion spill over from both sides given the importance of points at stake every passing week; nevertheless, attention at Leeds will now be geared toward this weekend, where high-flying Ipswich Town make the trip to Elland Road in a crunch encounter between two of the league's most entertaining sides to watch this term.

The Tractor Boys sit ten points in front of their opponents heading into Saturday's clash; however, Kieran McKenna's men will be frustrated after their draw with rivals Norwich City at Portman Road. Narrowing the margin down to seven points would drastically improve the Whites' chances of claiming automatic promotion this term, but one Leeds player may be taking no part in the race for the top two spots.

Leeds may now accept offer for "special" star in January

He was involved in drama against Coventry City…

BySean Markus Clifford Dec 17, 2023 Paul Robinson drops Leo Hjelde verdict

Earlier this month, journalist Phil Hay indicated that Leeds United defender Leo Hjelde had been demoted to Farke's Under-21 squad despite defensive absences at the club in recent times.

In total, the Norwegian youngster, who was previously labelled "fantastic" by his former Ross County manager John Hughes, has featured just three times for his current employers in all competitions this term and is firmly on the periphery despite injuries to the likes of Sam Byram and Junior Firpo (Hjelde statistics – Transfermarkt).

Speaking to MOT Leeds News, Robinson has given his latest assessment of Hjelde's standing at the Whites and has indicated that his situation is a "difficult" one to quantify, as he stated to the outlet: "It’s a difficult one to say. You don’t know what the manager wants, what his plans for the future are for him. He’s still very young, and he might just see him as a player who’s not quite ready to play at the level he wants to yet, or whether he doesn’t want him. We don’t know, that’s down to the manager’s opinion.

leo-hjelde-leeds-united-championship

"It has been a problem area. A lot of the time Pascal Struijk played there as well, and now he’s a mainstay at the centre if defence and he’s the captain, and playing particularly well there, so that’s another option that he’s lost. But as far as Hjelde goes you don’t know what the manager’s thinking. The fact that he’s not in and around the first team would suggest that the manager doesn’t think he’s ready yet."

Easwaran's 183* keeps Bengal alive; Jharkhand denied victory

Delhi join Mumbai in exit queue, while Vidarbha lead knockouts race – all the qualifying scenarios explained

Bengal eliminate Delhi
Bengal knocked Delhi out of the running for quarterfinal spot with a stirring fourth-innings chase led by Abhimanyu Easwaran’s 183 not out. Set 322 to win, Easwaran hit the winning boundary that took Bengal to 323 for 3, giving them six points and keeping their tournament alive.Delhi looked like they had the upper hand when they made 301 in their second innings. Bengal had conceded a narrow first-innings lead, so they had to go for victory, and they did that in style, taking only 70.2 overs in the chase. This was 23-year-old Easwaran’s second 180-plus score this season, having hit a career-best 186 against Hyderabad earlier in the season.Thrilling draw stymies JharkhandJharkhand had been set 153 to win against Tripura in one session. They came out swinging, but time ran out with the team 144 for 7 in 21.5 overs, at which point the teams shook hands. The result was a tough one for Jharkhand, for whom qualification has become a very tough race. They had entered this match on 30 points, and a win would have taken them to 36, just two shy of Uttar Pradesh’s 38. That would have left both teams very much in the fray heading into the final round, behind Rajasthan who have zoomed to 44 points and sealed one of the two qualification spots. But now, Jharkhand have 33 points, and to qualify, will need to win their last match against Jammu & Kashmir outright. At the same time, they’ll have to hope that Uttar Pradesh lose their last match, against Assam, to remain on 38. Or, if Jharkhand can manage a bonus-point win, they’ll have more than Uttar Pradesh even if the latter don’t lose, but end up conceding the first-innings lead in a draw.ESPNcricinfo understands that Jharkhand were left disappointed with Tripura’s tactics in this match, with the visiting side slowing the game to a dawdle and thus denying Jharkhand a shot at victory. Tripura had resisted well in their second innings to stretch their score to 308, batting out the first two sessions. Tea was taken with the last Tripura wicket falling, which left Jharkhand an extended final session to chase down the target. However, despite the umpires extending play, Tripura bowled only 21.5 overs in close to two and a half hours, a time-span in which at least 35 overs would have been bowled in the normal course of events.ESPNcricinfo Ltd/ Vishal Dikshit

Tight race in A&BThose who are out of running for a quarterfinal spot are: Hyderabad, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Mumbai, Andhra, Maharashtra, Railways and Chhattisgarh. That still leaves a whopping 10 teams who have a chance, with only one round remaining.Of the ten, Gujarat’s race is run. They have 26 points and have played their full quota of games. Presently third on the table, they need results to go their way to keep them in the top five, and can only watch from the outside.Ranji Trophy 2018-19 Points TableDefending champions Vidarbha are best placed, at the top of the table with 28 points. But if they lose against Saurashtra in their last round, they could actually not end up in the top five – the table is so tight. Here is how that could happen: Karnataka beat Baroda, Saurashtra beat Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh beat Andhra, Himachal Pradesh beat Kerala, and Bengal beat Punjab by a bonus point. All of the winning teams in this scenario would have more than Vidarbha’s 28 points.Still, Vidarbha are masters of their fate at least, and even a draw while conceding the first-innings lead should be enough for them to secure a top-five spot. Among the other teams in the fray, all of Karnataka (27), Gujarat (26), Saurashtra (26), Madhya Pradesh (24), Himachal Pradesh (22), Bengal (22), Kerala (20), Baroda (20) and Punjab (20) could make it, if things fall in place for them.Plate Group raceUttarakhand didn’t have a match in this round, but they had built up such a lead that they are still on top of the table with 37 points. If they win their last game, against bottom-placed Mizoram at home in Dehradun, they will be through regardless. The only other teams who have a theoretical chance of going through – provided Uttarakhand don’t win – are Bihar and Puducherry.Bihar have 34 points, and will play against Manipur, while Puducherry have 32 points and will face Nagaland. For Bihar to go through, they will realistically need to win, ideally with a bonus point, and hope Uttarakhand only manage a first-innings lead at most. For Puducherry to go through, they need three things to happen – for them to win outright, for Uttarakhand to lose outright, and for Bihar to get at most a first-innings lead.Round 8 – Brief ScoresGroup A & BBengal 6 points Delhi 0 pointsAndhra 3 points, Hyderabad 1 pointMadhya Pradesh 6 points, Himachal Pradesh 0 pointsGujarat 7 points, Maharashtra 0 pointsPunjab 7 points, Kerala 0 pointsKarnataka 6 points, Chhattisgarh 0 pointsVidarbha 7 points, Mumbai 0 pointsBaroda 6 points, Railways 0 pointsGroup CJ&K 6 points, Assam 0 pointsJharkhand 3 points, Tripura 1 pointServices 3 points, Odisha 1 pointRajasthan 7 points, Goa 0 pointsUttar Pradesh 6 points, Haryana 0 pointsPlate GroupNagaland 7 points, Arunachal Pradesh 0 pointsPuducherry 7 points, Manipur 0 pointsBihar 7 points, Mizoram 0 pointsMeghalaya 3 points, Sikkim 1 point

Farke could land instant Piroe upgrade with Leeds swoop for 6 ft 2 magician

Leeds United are eight points adrift of the automatic promotion places after they were beaten 2-1 by Preston North End at Deepdale on Boxing Day.

The Whites failed to pick up any points in Lancashire in the early kick-off as an Illan Meslier red card was followed by goals from Alan Browne and Liam Millar on either side of an equaliser from Pascal Struijk.

Ipswich Town dropped points later in the day against Leicester City and that meant that Daniel Farke's side would have been five points off the top two had they beaten Preston.

Instead, they are now fourth in the table – below Southampton who moved up to third – and eight points behind the Tractor Boys in the hunt for promotion back to the Premier League.

The January transfer window is open from the start of next week and Farke could dip into the market to give his team a boost ahead of the second half of the campaign.

Leeds transfer news – a number ten

Journalist Dean Jones recently told GIVEMESPORT that he could see Leeds being tempted to enter the market for a natural number ten next month.

The Whites do not have an out-and-out attacking midfielder in their squad as it stands, and the reporter suggested that, whilst there is no guarantee anything will happen, it would not be a surprise to see something come up in that area of the pitch.

Dutch centre-forward Joel Piroe has been utilised in the number ten role so far this season and Farke could land an instant upgrade, just months after his arrival last summer, by swooping to sign Celtic's Matt O'Riley in January.

The Scottish Sun reported in August that the Hoops rejected an offer from Leeds for the Denmark international, who was also wanted by Italian side Bologna.

It was claimed that the German tactician was keen to bring the attacking midfielder to Elland Road to link up with the likes of Ethan Ampadu and Glen Kamara, who was close to a move to Yorkshire from Rangers at the time.

The Whites must now reignite their interest in the former Fulham whiz to bolster their squad in January as he could be a big upgrade on Piroe, who struggled again on Tuesday.

Piroe's performance against Preston in numbers

The summer signing from Swansea lined up as the number ten in Farke's 4-2-3-1 formation as Georgino Rutter once again led the line.

He played the opening 55 minutes of the match before being substituted as the left-footed attacker failed to make an impact on the game.

Piroe lost 100% (2/2) of his duels as the opposition found it far too easy to get the better of him in physical contests and he failed to engage in many battles to help his team out.

The Dutch gem also created just one chance for his teammates, which was not a 'big chance', and did not manage a shot on target in his 55 minutes.

Analyst Louorns on X went as far as to say that Piroe is "invisible" 90% of the time and that Leeds should have spent money on a player who offers more during matches than him.

Piroe's season in numbers

The 24-year-old marksman has been solid but unspectacular since his summer switch from Championship rivals Swansea earlier this year.

Piroe has racked up nine goals and one assist in 24 league matches for the Swans and Leeds combined, which is less than a goal involvement every other game on average.

As you can see from the table above, he was a prolific scorer during his time in Wales but rarely contributed as a creator for his teammates and missed plenty of good opportunities in front of goal.

His finishing has left a bit to be desired so far this season for the Whites as the forward has only scored nine goals from 9.90 and missed seven 'big chances' across his 24 league outings.

He has also only managed one assist and produced 0.9 key passes per game, and this shows that the makeshift number ten does not provide his fellow attackers with chances to score on a regular basis.

These statistics highlight how underwhelming Piroe has been so far this season and O'Riley could now come in as an instant upgrade on him if Leeds can secure his signature.

The statistics that show why Leeds should sign O'Riley

The 23-year-old midfielder has been in fantastic form for the Scottish giants so far this season and could be an excellent signing for the Whites.

He has been superb in front of goal with nine goals in 19 Scottish Premiership matches for Brendan Rodgers' side, which means that the talented gem has as many goals as Piroe in five fewer appearances. This suggests that they both offer a similar level of goal threat from a midfield or number ten position for their respective sides.

The Denmark international, who was hailed as "complete" by journalist Josh Bunting earlier this season, can provide goals from midfield but he is also a sensational creator for his teammates.

O'Riley has produced 2.6 key passes per game and assisted five goals in 19 league outings this term, following on from 12 assists and 16 'big chances' created in 32 matches during the 2022/23 campaign.

Only Crysencio Summerville (three) has managed more than 2.1 key passes per clash in the Championship this season and this suggests that the Celtic star would be one of Farke's outstanding creators at the top end of the pitch.

These statistics show that the 6 foot 2 magician has the quality to come in as a big upgrade on Piroe, given their similar goal output and the drastic difference in creativity between them.

The Hoops whiz could help Leeds to unlock opposition defences, like Preston's on Boxing Day, more frequently than the Dutch forward, who is not a natural creator in the number ten role.
