Fidel Edwards made short shrift of Worcestershire after being awarded his Hampshire county cap

Gurney and Ball run amok at Old Trafford

ScorecardFidel Edwards crushed the Worcestershire batting line-up as Hampshire skittled their newly promoted rivals out for 127 to win the opening Specsavers County Championship fixture of the season by 196 runs.West Indian fast bowler Edwards was handed his county cap before the start of play before taking 3 for 33, including two wickets in two balls, in a whirlwind morning spell.Gareth Berg, Brad Wheal, Liam Dawson and Kyle Abbott – the latter returning 4 for 45 – also took a wicket each on the final morning to send Hampshire to the top of the Division One table.Joe Leach, Worcestershire’s captain insisted that despite the heavy defeat Worcestershire had proved that they deserved to be in Division One company.”We have competed in a lot of the game and been on top in certain periods,” he said. “Ultimately it wasn’t good enough but we live and learn. I have said to this group – and this might seem a bizarre thing to say after a loss [by this margin] – but this game reaffirmed to me that we deserve to be here and mix it in this division with these types of teams.”The day had begun with Hampshire needing seven wickets and Worcestershire requiring 264 runs. The visitors, who had lost three wickets all to Abbott on the previous day, had what they would have thought was a trump card at the crease in Daryl Mitchell.Mitchell boasted an average just under 70 against Hampshire, including a double century, and had batted serenely on day three to reach 34.At the other end Josh Tongue had been dispatched as a nightwatchman for the second time in the match, and while he had done his job in the day three gloom, he lasted just three overs in the morning. Gareth Berg set a trap with a catching fielder at midwicket, and bowled a straight delivery which Tongue clipped straight to Brad Wheal. Mitchell only managed a single before he departed, pinned on the crease by Abbott.George Rhodes’ innings typified the tricky conditions by taking 35 balls to get off the mark. Scoring a run proved Rhodes’ demise though, as he then edged Edwards to Hashim Amla at first slip.Ben Cox was the next to depart when Brad Wheal slammed into his off stump to send it cartwheeling.Edwards cleaned up the tail when he had Ed Barnard on the pads in front before find the edge of Worcestershire captain Joe Leach’s bat next ball.Australian overseas Travis Head, who blocked out the hat-trick ball at the start of the next over, provided the only real barrier to a Hampshire rout with a well-made 45. But Hampshire completed their win when Steve Magoffin poked Dawson to James Vince at short midwicket.

Celtic: Hoops star who rejected Parkhead deal now close to new contract

Celtic have been extremely productive when it comes to new contracts, and another key player is close to extending his Parkhead stay, according to one reliable reporter.

Who is signing a new Celtic contract?

The Hoops and Brendan Rodgers have been busy both on and off the pitch following the Northern Irishman’s return to Glasgow.

Over the summer, a number of new players were brought to the club at a combined cost of just under £20m. On the pitch, Celtic are once again leading the way at the top of the Scottish Premiership after six games, dropping just two points.

Alongside the summer signings, those at Celtic Park have also been busy in regards to keeping hold of their prized assets. Kyogo Furuhashi, Daizen Maeda, Callum McGregor, Liel Abada and Anthony Ralston have all signed new contracts in recent months, with the latter signing on the dotted line on Tuesday, and it appears as if Reo Hatate is close to following suit.

The 25-year-old has only started two games under Rodgers so far this season, with the manager challenging the player to prove himself last month.

“It’s not in my contract to play any player. He’s got three years left on his contract, so there’s no rush on that. It’s a new cycle, a new manager, and Reo has to prove himself.

“I’m not really worried about what’s said or not. I’ll play the team I see with the best energy, mentality and efficiency with how we want to work.

“There’s no doubt Reo is a talented player, but there are other talented players here.”

Hatate, currently under contract until 2026, even rejected a new Celtic contract over the summer, but it looks as if is situation is set to be resolved.

According to reliable reporter Stephen McGowan of The Mail, the Hoops are now closing in on an agreement with Hatate.

Discussions are thought to have been ‘positive’ with the midfielder and his representatives over an improved deal, with a new long-term contract in the cards.

Celtic midfielder Reo Hatate.

How much did Celtic pay for Reo Hatate?

Hatate has been one of a number of shrewd signings made by the Hoops in recent years and arrived from Kawasaki Frontale back in 2021 in a deal worth around £1.3m.

Since then, the Japan international has gone on to make 71 Celtic appearances in all competitions, scoring 14 times and registering 14 assists.

However, as mentioned, he hasn’t exactly been a regular on the teamsheet under Rodgers so far, but with the news that he is set to extend his deal, one of his first tasks will be to break into the starting XI on a regular basis.

You’d like to think he’ll get his chance with the Hoops, and after scoring in the 3-0 win at Livingston last time out, he may now get a run of starts.

Hatate also provides Rodgers with plenty of versatility as he is able to turn out on the left or right as a midfielder or full-back, so a new deal appears to be good news for all involved at Parkhead.

SLC begin search for new staff after Pothas' exit

Former Pakistan legspinner Mushtaq Ahmed is among those being considered for the position of spin bowling coach. The board is also on the hunt for a new fielding coach

Former Pakistan legspinner Mushtaq Ahmed is among those being considered by Sri Lanka Cricket for the position of spin bowling coach. Mushtaq, who has expressed interest in the position, has previously worked with England and Pakistan. The board is also on the hunt for a new fielding coach. The search for new staff coincides with the exit of Nic Pothas – who was Sri Lanka’s interim head coach for roughly half of 2017 – two months before his contract expires. A Sri Lanka cricket official confirmed that the board had let Pothas go on good terms, and that it would seek to appoint the two new coaches within the next two months.Confirming his departure, Pothas said it had “been an honor and a privilege to be involved with Sri Lanka” for two years, but that it was time for him to pursue other opportunities, in order to “spend quality time with [his] young family”.Pothas’ decision to quit early is understood to have been partially prompted by his disappointment with the scope of his role. Although he had been a contender for Sri Lanka’s permanent head coach position in August last year, when he had been publicly endorsed for that role by Sri Lanka’s cricket manager Asanka Gurusinha, Pothas was not required by the national side after Chandika Hathurusingha – a coach of much greater renown – was hired. Pothas had been working as a general fielding coach since being relieved of the interim position. SLC officials expect him to take up a position in England.Appointed interim coach following the exit of Graham Ford in June last year, Pothas’ six months at the helm was largely characterised by poor results, substantial upheaval and pressure from SLC administrators, though there was also the historic Test series victory against Pakistan in the UAE last year.Sri Lanka’s present high performance manager Simon Willis had also previously confirmed his departure in June, meaning SLC will seek a replacement for him as well.

Liverpool close to agreeing deal for "amazing" £34m man to leave Anfield

Liverpool are making bold moves on the market and could offset some of their early ventures by selling one of their rising stars, according to David Ornstein.

Liverpool seeing plenty of movement in both directions

Arne Slot is the man in charge at Anfield and is already a hero among supporters, and his stock is only likely to have risen recently given the Reds have signed Jeremie Frimpong and more arrivals are expected to follow.

Florian Wirtz is next in line, putting pen to paper on a deal until 2030 that will generate plenty of headlines around Merseyside.

Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez is also on his way to Liverpool, and it shouldn’t be too long before the Hungarian international becomes the latest shiny new addition to be rolled out at Anfield.

Marc Guehi’s contract situation at Crystal Palace has put the Reds on alert, and there could now be potential for further activity to unfold if the England international is open to joining the red half of Merseyside amid alternative interest from Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.

He could surpass Salah: Liverpool now prepared to sign another £100m star

Liverpool are in the market for a centre-forward this summer.

ByAngus Sinclair Jun 19, 2025

Streamlining a squad that deserved every element of their success last term isn’t always easy, but Slot doesn’t appear to be someone fond of sentiment in any way, shape or form.

In light of this, Liverpool are now closing in on an agreement that would see one of their stars head to Germany this summer.

Ornstein: Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah set for Bayer Leverkusen

According to Ornstein, Jarell Quansah is close to agreeing a move to Bayer Leverkusen from Liverpool on a deal that could be worth in excess of £34 million.

Personal terms aren’t expected to be an issue, and despite no formal bid being in play yet, all parties are ‘progressing’ in their mission to get a deal done.

Labelled “amazing” by teammate Alexis Mac Allister, Quansah made 25 appearances last campaign as the Reds stormed to the Premier League title, though an exit may now be the best course of action for his career.

Coming in as a pure profit sale, the 22-year-old’s departure is likely to be heralded as smart business from FSG, even if it will bring his 17-year association with the club to an end if he were to exit.

Udawatte, Rajitha, Vandersay picked for West Indies Tests

Sri Lanka draft in four uncapped players, largely to take the place of injured players

Andrew Fidel Fernando11-May-2018

BCCI

Thirty-one year old opening batsman Mahela Udawatte has broken into the Sri Lanka Test squad more than 10 years after his international debut, along with three other uncapped players, Kasun Rajitha, Jeffrey Vandersay and Asitha Fernando.Changes in SL Test squad

IN: Mahela Udawatte, Kusal Perera, Jeffrey Vandersay, Kasun Rajitha, Asitha Fernando
OUT: Dushmantha Chameera, Danushka Gunathilaka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Lakshan Sandakan

The fresh entrants are there partly because a number of injuries have afflicted the Sri Lanka talent pool. Regular opener Dimuth Karunaratne is out with a fractured finger, and fast bowlers Dushmantha Chameera and Nuwan Pradeep are out with back and hamstring complaints respectively. Legspinner Vandersay alone has pushed the incumbent out on the strength of his domestic form. He had been better through the provincial four-day competition than left-arm wristspinner Lakshan Sandakan, or so, at least, say the selectors.Kusal Perera, who last played a Test in December 2016 in South Africa, was also picked ahead of Danushka Gunathilaka, who had only recently returned from injury. Kusal’s return was somewhat expected given his good returns across formats in both domestic and international cricket this year.Curiously, the selectors have put a caveat by the names of two senior players: Angelo Mathews and fast bowler Suranga Lakmal, stating that their participation in the tour is subject to fitness. Chief selector Graeme Labrooy explained to ESPNcricinfo: “Mathews and Lakmal are not unfit as such. In fact they are fit, but we wanted to see if they were match-fit. The team is at a training camp in Pallekele, so we’ll give them until May 14 before we make a final decision on those two players.” Both Mathews and Lakmal had only recently recovered from long-standing leg injuries.Udawatte – effectively Karunaratne’s replacement in the squad – has made his way into the squad on the basis of domestic runs. His previous forays into limited-overs cricket were unsuccessful, but the selectors are hoping his form for the Kandy provincial team will stand him in good stead in the West Indies. He had hit 97 and 103 not out in a recent four-dayer, and also has a century and a fifty from three provincial one-day matches in May.Rajitha, Vandersay and Fernando, meanwhile, have been on the fringes of the national side for some time. All three have played limited-overs matches for Sri Lanka, without quite holding down a place. Labrooy said that domestic form again paved these players’ paths into the Test squad. Rajitha appears the likeliest of the trio to make a Test debut, given the dearth of senior quicks; Lahiru Gamage and Lahiru Kumara are the other seam bowlers on tour.Beyond the dropping of Sandakan, who Labrooy said had struggled in recent months, there were no major surprises on the spin-bowling front. Warhorses Rangana Herath and Dilruwan Perera were in the squad, as was Akila Dananjaya who debuted to much acclaim in Sri Lanka’s most-recent Test, in Bangladesh.Kusal Mendis, Udawatte, Dhananjaya de Silva, Roshen Silva and Niroshan Dickwella are likely to form the core of the batting order, with Mathews joining if he proves fit.Sri Lanka play three Tests in the West Indies, including the Caribbean’s first ever day-night Test, in Barbados. The visitors are scheduled to start their tour with a three-day practice match in Trinidad, before the first Test begins on the same island, on June 6. Sri Lanka have never won a series in the West Indies.Test squad: Dinesh Chandimal (capt), Mahela Udawatte, Kusal Mendis, Kusal Perera, Dhananjaya de Silva, Roshen Silva, Angelo Mathews (subject to fitness), Niroshan Dickwella (wk), Rangana Herath, Dilruwan Perera, Akila Dananjaya, Jeffrey Vandersay, Lahiru Gamage, Kasun Rajitha, Suranga Lakmal (subject to fitness), Lahiru Kumara, Asitha Fernando

Spurs: Pochettino failed to sign £300k-p/w star, now he’s worth £100m

Tottenham Hotspur will be delighted with their rapid progress under Ange Postecoglou, who has transformed them from a side seemingly frightened to play football and labouring to poor results under turgid management, into an outfit oozing positivity, seemingly capable of challenging the very best.

Liverpool and Manchester United both fell victim to their never-say-die attitude, with Arsenal twice being pegged back at the Emirates to earn a vital point. As such, they are the only side in the Premier League who remain unbeaten, aside from their north London rivals.

The football is electric, and the fans are already appreciating the revolution being ushered in after years of disappointment.

TalkSPORT's Jamie O'Hara would echo such a sentiment, noting: "Oh Gabby I'm loving big Ange.

"Big Ange has come in and he's just been a breath of fresh air. I love the way he talks, I love the way he sets the team up, I just love the way that we're playing now as a football club."

And whilst fans will be cautiously optimistic of their blistering start, the former Celtic boss insists they are not here to make up the numbers: "We’re top of the table because we’ve played some good football, been consistent and overcome some big challenges. That’s where we are at the moment but we’re still building. We’re still trying to build a team and a way of playing and our target is to improve. If we can improve on what we’ve done so far then we’ll see where that takes us."

Although the bulk of the squad has been near-faultless, there is still a slight issue with the left wing spot, as Richarlison continues to falter as Heung-min Son seeks to step up into the striker role.

Were they to have someone like Jack Grealish for example, who knows how far this team could go.

Did Spurs nearly sign Jack Grealish?

Whilst the former Aston Villa man might seem like a random name to throw in as a star who might ease their outstanding issue, there is reason behind his inclusion.

After all, the 28-year-old was once a pretty serious target of Spurs', and years before his eventual move to Manchester City, it could have been north London that he made his home had they pushed a little harder under Mauricio Pochettino.

jack-grealish-aston-villa

As the Villans languished in the Championship back in 2018, Daniel Levy hatched an unsurprisingly shrewd plan to snag the maverick from his boyhood club for as little as £15m, despite his £40m asking price being well-documented. Whilst they upped their eventual bid to £25m, it was once again rejected, causing reported frustration from the trickster as he pushed for an exit that would never come.

The Villa manager at the time, Steve Bruce, would praise his star man for his reaction to such a blow: "We understand the human side. He will want to play in the Premier League, Europe, Champions League. The owner has made it clear that he wants him to stay. To be fair to Jack, he has got on with it."

However, it is fair to say that holding on for a little bit longer paid dividends, with Pep Guardiola eventually coming along to pry him once and for all, with a fee few clubs could ever say no to.

jack-grealish-transfer-gossip-arsenal-brighton-kaoru-mitoma-edu-arteta

The Citizens would pay a mouth-watering £100m, breaking the British transfer record and also placing a near-impossible price tag to live up to. Despite that, Grealish has impressed, fulfilling his wildest dreams last season as he was ever-present as they won the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, writing history in the process.

To think that Levy, had he just forked up the £40m asking price three years earlier, could have acquired himself a £100m player, is a frustrating notion. However, it is so brilliantly typical of the frugal businessman famed for his reluctance to spend big.

Were they to swap the England international for Richarlison, who last season would score just one league goal all year, and instantly Postecoglou would receive an even greater boost set to elevate his already impressive side to new heights.

How good is Jack Grealish?

"The best game he has played since he has been with us, by far," Guardiola purred back in January 2022. "This was an exceptional performance. He played really, really well. I’m talking about when he has the ball, what he has to do. In a team that is so tight, they defend so narrow, it is not easy. He played exceptionally.

“In Aston Villa he played wide and after he moved wherever he wants and came inside. I think he’s the perfect player to play between the lines. He’s so aggressive, he makes incredible runs, he dropped the Southampton team to the byline, his decision-making is excellent. He had two almost clear chances to dribble and shoot that was blocked.

“He played really well. I’m so satisfied for the performance Jack has done."

To receive such lofty praise from a legendary manager such as him should speak volumes, with talkSPORT pundit Dean Saunders adding him to the list of England's "world class" talent pool in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup.

However, it was not an easy start to life at the Etihad for the £300k-per-week maestro, who scored just three and assisted three more in his debut Premier League term. These are figures he would take to another level the season following, scoring five and assisting seven in the league, and making an impressive 50 appearances across all competitions.

Given the Spanish tactician rotates so often, Grealish's reliable presence speaks volumes for his talent.

The scout who actually picked the winger up for Villa, Jim Thomas, spoke in 2019 about the undecided future of the crowning jewel of his career. He would wax lyrical about his emergence, but crucially ended his interview by noting: "I wouldn't have wanted him to go like but I think if he played for [Spurs] I think they'd be the perfect team."

Whilst he would argue otherwise given the success he has since earned, Postecoglou would surely love to have him as the perfect man to complete his side for now and help them mount a truly serious challenge to build off their outstanding start.
