Proposal to shift BCCI headquarters draws mixed response

The board’s proposal to shift its headquarters from Mumbai to Bengaluru has met with both support and objection alongside calls for creation of zonal headquarters

BCCI acting president CK Khanna’s proposal to shift the board’s headquarters from Mumbai to a new facility in Bengaluru has met with a mixed response from different state associations. While the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) and the Saurashtra Cricket Association (SCA) staunchly opposed the suggestion, the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) welcomed the proposal and called for the creation of zonal headquarters. It is understood the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association and the Madhya Pradesh Cricket Association haven’t firmed up their positions on the matter yet.Meanwhile, even as the Cricket Association of Bengal stated it did not wish to divulge its stance, the association’s joint-secretary Avishek Dalmiya said Kolkata wasn’t a “bad location” either for the BCCI’s headquarters to be moved to. “Whatever views we have we will disclose it whenever the issue is deliberated by the BCCI at its general body meeting,” Dalmiya told ESPNcricinfo. “In fact, even Kolkata does not prima facie seem to be a bad option because it will be logistically easier for a lot of units from the north-east as well as the east.”Khanna had sent two letters dated February 6 and 7 to state associations seeking their views on shifting the BCCI’s base. He stated that the 40 acres of land in the vicinity of the Bengaluru airport – originally acquired for the relocation of the National Cricket Academy from its current premises – could be used “optimally” as a multipurpose facility. “This whole land can be used optimally if along with NCA, BCCI also uses a part of this land to build a new state-of-art headquarters as its exclusive administrative office along with provision of allied and ancillary services infrastructure,” Khanna wrote. He also pointed out that the present headquarters, situated inside the premises of the Wankhede Stadium, was a rented facility, and urged that the BCCI shift to its own property. Outlining the other ways in which the proposed new headquarters could be used, Khanna wrote: “In these premises of BCCI, auditorium, conference rooms and meeting rooms for meetings with all the facilities could also be made,” he wrote. “An exquisite club house for visiting guests, cricketers with all dining facilities for their convenience, space for recreational facilities, indoor games, a cricket library, swimming pool and a cricket museum. It should also have adequate storage facility for BCCI documents for future reference and consultation.”Khanna, however, referred to clause 2 of the rules and regulations of the Lodha Committee report that warrants that the board’s headquarters remain in Mumbai. “In light of this fact, it is requested that the proposal of the members be kindly considered by the Hon’ble Committee of Administrators keeping in view the above said clause as enshrined in the rules & regulations,” he wrote in his second letter on February 7. “In case the Hon’ble Committee of Administrators deem it necessary, the proposal may be brought to the kind attention of the Hon’ble Supreme Court they may guide the way forward. It is reiterated herein that the proposal to shift the BCCI Headquarters to Bengaluru is based on the intention to develop a state-of-the-art headquaters for the board to enable it to cater to the growing organisational needs.”The MCA decided to inform the BCCI about the opinion of its managing committee that the board’s headquarters should stay at Wankhede Stadium. “The managing committee met a few days ago and is of the opinion that the BCCI office should remain on our premises,” MCA joint-secretary Unmesh Khanvilkar said. “Since the time of its inception, the BCCI’s office has been located on the premises of the MCA and the managing committee feels it should continue.”The SCA, in its reply to the BCCI, noted that the idea of moving the headquarters out of Mumbai had been floated many times in the past. However, the Cricket Centre at the Wankhede Stadium was found to be most “suitable and appropriate.””We understand that [the] lease agreement between Mumbai Cricket Association and Government of Maharashtra is coming to an end by February 2018 and our agreement with MCA will also end,” SCA joint-secretary Madhukar Worah wrote in a letter, which is in the possession of ESPNcricinfo. “We understand [the] MCA has already applied for extension of the lease agreement. We are confident that MCA will have same terms and conditions as per earlier lease agreement, which have [has] been very suitable to BCCI. Only if MCA comes up with unreasonable demands for renewal of agreement, we should think of shifting BCCI headquarters.”HCA secretary T Shesh Narayan, though, felt there was nothing wrong in moving the headquarters out of Mumbai. “As you know, Mumbai is a congested place and it has been there [as the headquarters] for 70-80 years,” he told ESPNcricinfo. “Everybody should be given a chance. My proposal would be that each zone should have a zonal office and, by rotation, the board should function from that zone. Suppose, if the president is from south zone, then the south zone office shall become the headquarters. This is decentralisation that the Lodha [Committee] has talked about. But one logistical problem which will arise is it will be difficult for the staff to move. Since the funds are available in abundance, we can afford to have five offices. Decentralisation is there.”

Nottingham Forest: Cooper sweating on "important player" after injury update

Nottingham Forest have been dealt with a potential injury blow ahead of the return to club football this weekend, with reports coming out that one of their promising new signings has returned early from the international break.

Nottingham Forest – latest team news

After a positive start to the campaign, Steve Cooper’s side found themselves going into the international break in ninth place after four games played, winning two and losing two.

Over the course of the international fixtures so far, six Forest players have been involved for their respective countries, with some exciting performances standing out to fans.

New signing Ibrahim Sangare, who is yet to make his Forest debut, scored the only goal for his native Ivory Coast, as they beat Lesotho 1-0 in their final game of the AFCON qualifying stages.

Meanwhile, centre-forward Taiwo Awoniyi continued his fine form, as he scored for Nigeria in their 6-0 rout over São Tomé and Príncipe. Defender Ola Aina also featured in the game, playing 73 minutes.

There is, however, some more slightly concerning news for Forest fans after winger Anthony Elanga was withdrawn from the Swedish national camp after picking up an injury in training.

What's the latest news on Anthony Elanga?

The latest reports coming out of his home country reveal that the 21-year-old dynamo has left their team camp immediately to return to Forest, having picked up an issue.

The winger was an unused substitute as Sweden beat Estonia 5-0 on Saturday and the latest update means he will no longer be part of the squad for the upcoming game against Austria on Tuesday.

Currently, the cause or extent of the injury have not been revealed, although in an official statement released by the Sweden national team, it was described as 'minor' but it is clearly bad enough to return to the Midlands ahead of schedule.

How has Elanga performed this season?

The absence of Swede would no doubt be damaging to Cooper and the team, having made a promising start to his Forest career since his summer move from Manchester United.

Elanga is already off the mark in terms of both goals and assists, including a memorable match-winning goal against Chelsea to hand Forest their first away win of the season before the international break.

His efforts earned the praises of his boss, who after the result at Stamford Bridge said:

“We want players like [Elanga] in the squad who are young and hungry, and who we know can grow.

“He is already a really good player, but he will become a very important player for us. It’s just a process. Days like this will help him as well.”

The club will be hopeful that the injury is not a serious concern that could threaten to keep the winger out for extended periods of time, as Elanga – who earns around £25k-per-week at the City Ground – had been quickly adapting to life at Forest ahead of the break.

The side return to action on September 18th where they host Burnley, who are still looking for a first league win of the season, although they got the better of Forest when the two sides met in the Carabao Cup second round in late August.

Sammy wins Peshawar a thriller on one leg

They had one win from three matches coming into the game and the captain – despite a bad injury – stepped up to deliver another

The Report by Danyal Rasool01-Mar-2018

PCB/PSL

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsIn a nutshellDarren Sammy doesn’t need to lift a finger to guarantee his place on the immortality shelf as far as the Pakistan Super League was concerned. But the Peshawar captain’s heroics, hobbling out to bat on one leg, ensured he has taken pride of place on that shelf for the foreseeable future.Sammy hammered 16 off only four balls and propelled his side to a victory they looked to have all but squandered. Chasing 142, Peshawar had seemed on course for much of the innings, led by a disciplined – if a little sedate – 54-run partnership between Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Hafeez. But with 35 required off the last five, the partnership was broken, and suddenly the chase went into disarray. The equation turned very quickly turned into 16 off the last 7 when Sammy, who was injured while bowling, dragged himself out to the crease. It turned out his devastating physical power was undiminished, as he smashed two sixes off his first two balls, before a straight drive in the final over saw Peshawar clinch victory with two balls to spare.Quetta Gladiators will rue an innings that kept stuttering at crucial points, beginning with a disappointing Powerplay, before Shane Watson hit Mohammad Asghar for three sixes in an over to breathe some life into his side. He hit five sixes in a 32-ball 47, but after he was dismissed, no one apart from Rilee Rossouw was able to kick on, with 19-year old seamer Sameen Gul – in for an injured Hasan Ali – enjoying a stellar debut. Wahab Riaz was at his all too infrequent best, bowling yorkers at up to 150 kph and preventing Quetta from teeing off in the death overs. It turned out every one of those runs saved made a massive difference.Where the match was wonSammy will grab the headlines, and well he might, but in the wake of the defeat, Quetta will want to look at a strange approach to their batting Powerplay. Gul and Umaid Asif were opening the bowling for Peshawar – hardly repositories of experience. If Watson and Asad Shafiq, both of whom have been around the block, had taken the attack to them with only two fielders out, it might have tested the young bowlers’ temperament a bit more. Gul and Asif’s eight overs went for only 38 runs and fetched two wickets too, but in truth, they were allowed to settle into rhythm. By seven overs, Quetta had scored only 33 runs. That wouldn’t be par for any course, but on this Sharjah strip with the small boundaries, it was bound to cost them. The men that won itOne would be hard-pressed to look past Peshawar’s talismanic captain here. After Mohammad Asghar had been smashed for 21 runs by Shane Watson in the eighth over, Sammy – a reluctant bowler these days – decided he would have a spell. He got rid of Umar Amin in his first over, and all told, his figures read 2.4-0-21-2. He was forced off by a calf injury, but he had made a massive contribution in keeping the Gladiators below 150.For all of his, and everyone else’s good work, though, it looked like the defending champions had bottled it at the end. The boundaries had been drying up perniciously, and suddenly 7 per over became 22 off the last two, with no experienced, specialist batsmen remaining. It was uncertain whether Sammy would come out to bat, and when he finally did to front up, it looked like a daft idea. The man could barely walk, scoring at over two runs per ball against Rahat Ali and Anwar Ali was rarely the preserve of able-bodied cricketers. However, two sixes and a four later, every jaw in Sharjah had dropped, and another chapter embellishing Sammy in the PSL had swiftly been written.Anwar Ali’s rotten dayWahab was at his fearsome best at the death, and Anwar Ali can’t have been looking forward to facing him in the 20th over. But first up, Wahab bowled one right in the slot, and the lower-order batsman caught it clean in the middle of the bat. It sailed over the boundary for six, briefly raising hopes of a strong finish. But unbeknownst to most, Anwar’s heel had nudged off stump, and one of the bails shuffled in its slot before popping out, a brilliant flash of electronic red the tell-tale sign. The importance of every run in this nail-biting game would not have been lost on Anwar, particularly after Sammy smashed him for a six and a four in the final over to wrench victory from his side.Where they standQuetta and Peshawar each have two wins in four after today’s breathless finish, and sit third and fourth on the table respectively, separated only by net run-rate.

"Unbelievable" – BBC pundit says West Ham star has "gone under the radar"

BBC pundit Ian Wright has said there is one West Ham star who deserves far more credit for what he brings under David Moyes.

Latest West Ham news

The Hammers are now gearing up for their Europa League opener against Backa Topola this evening for what will be an interesting clash in east London.

West Ham take on the Serbian Super League side as they eye another European trophy challenge, coming after their Conference League triumph in Prague last term.

All the early signs suggest Moyes' side are more-than capable of mounting a cup run after their brilliant domestic start.

West Ham have tasted victory in three of their opening five Premier League games; including wins against the likes of high-flying Brighton who have scored more goals than any other top flight side so far.

Speaking ahead of their bout with Topola tonight, Moyes reminisced over their Conference League win while praising his squad for some brilliant early-season form.

"I've got to say there's an inner glow about me because I know getting that victory means so much," said Moyes.

"I'm pleased to carry that with me now. I hope we can do it again, I really do, because of the magic feeling when it happened, the aftermath, what it meant to so many people in east London and to West Ham supporters in particular.

"I think we've tried to build a stronger whole group.

"The competition is good in the squad. We want to keep that strong and the players are in a confident frame of mind, which comes from victories and playing well."

West Ham player ratings

There have been some standout stars under Moyes so far; perhaps most notably James Ward-Prowse, Edson Alvarez, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio among others.

The latter pair are being rewarded with the offer of fresh terms, while the former duo have been lavished with praise for their excellent start to life at West Ham.

However, former Arsenal star Wright, who regularly appears on the BBC and ITV for his punditry, has suggested there is one player who simply doesn't get enough credit.

Wright says goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is that man, with the Frenchman pulling off some "unbelievable" saves and needs more "highlight reels".

Indeed, the pundit says his performances have gone somewhat "under the radar" and deserve more recognition.

"Before I mention another one," said the ex-Premier League star on Wrighty's House.

"I think we should mention Areola. He has made some unbelievable saves. He’s gone under the radar.

“I’m not seeing enough on the highlight reels. When you see this guy he’s making great saves and doing good stuff.”

How good is Alphonse Areola?

Areola has always been waiting in the wings for his West Ham chance and recently usurped Lukasz Fabianski for the number one spot under Moyes.

Irons legend and former captain Mark Noble, now the club's sporting director, praised Areola's attitude and quality all the way back in 2021.

“Alphonse knows Lukasz is number one at the minute but he’s great around the boys, he doesn’t sulk," said Noble.

"He comes in and he’s been fantastic in the Europa League games that he’s played and fantastic in the Carabao Cup games.”
