Vernon Philander will not play for the Cobras in the season-opening first-class fixture against the Knights in Bloemfontein, after a CSA directive ruled him out of the match. Philander is in the final phase of rehabilitation from the back injury he sustained during the England tour and is the second premier fast bowler after Dale Steyn to be sidelined for this round of matches.Given that the four-day game is the only competitive cricket South Africa’s players will have before a two-Test series against Bangladesh that starts on September 28, Philander is likely to be doubtful for the first Test.Philander was part of the Cobras’ pre-season preparations in Oudtshoorn but did not play in either of their warm-up matches. He has not had any game-time since the Oval Test in July, where his performance was hindered by a stomach bug. Philander recovered from the illness in time to play the final Test at Old Trafford but suffered lower-back spasms on the morning of the match and had to be left off the team sheet, causing former captain Graeme Smith to launch a scathing criticism of the fast bowler.Smith asked whether Philander’s ongoing issues with his fitness merited picking him in the first place and warned him that his career was at risk of “fading away pretty quickly” unless he paid better attention to his conditioning. Philander was said to be furious with Smith’s public comments and requested a meeting with Smith, which was due to take place in Cape Town post-series.Whether that meeting has taken place is yet to be ascertained but it would seem Philander has more pressing things on his agenda. His unavailability for this round of fixtures is unlikely to sit well with new South Africa coach Ottis Gibson, who arrives in the country on Monday and has insisted all national players avail themselves for the first-class fixture ahead of the Test squad’s selection. With neither Steyn nor Philander playing, South Africa will be left with an attack of Kagiso Rabada, Morne Morkel – who will return from the World XI matches in Pakistan to play for the Titans – and one of Duanne Olivier or Chris Morris, who also suffered a back injury in England. The Test squad will be announced next week, after the first-class fixtures.

Aston Villa Could Sign £13m "Genius" To Make Diaby Unplayable

Aston Villa are reportedly still on the tail of Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos, as Unai Emery eyes another reunion with one of his former players this summer.

The Spaniard has already rekindled his relationship with Pau Torres, whom he acquired from his previous club Villarreal earlier in the window, with his sights reported to be set on Ceballos.

What’s the latest on Dani Ceballos to Aston Villa?

As reported in Spain by news outlet Sport, Villa are ‘preparing’ an offer for the Spaniard, who has been linked with a move to the Midlands since the January window.

It’s speculated that Emery will offer Madrid a figure in the region of €15m (£13m) for the playmaker, despite him penning a new deal with Los Blancos in June.

Sport adds that the Spaniard will hope to lure his former player to Villa Park, with the move more likely following Madrid’s big-money signing of Jude Bellingham plus the fact that game time is not going to be easy to grasp.

How good is Dani Ceballos?

The 27-year-old is a player well known not just by Emery, but by the Premier League too, following his consecutive loan spells at Arsenal.

Having been hailed as a “little genius” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, the central midfielder has shown that he can perform in England at the top level, making him a potentially strong addition to the manager’s set-up in the Midlands.

While the Utrera-born gem has taken up a more sporadic role at the Bernabeu, his inconsistent game time hasn’t derailed his level of performance, as highlighted through his numbers.

As per FBref, Ceballos maintained an average pass completion rate of 90.6%, as well as recording a monstrous 11.74 progressive passes per 90 in LaLiga.

To put such numbers into perspective, Villa’s main creator last term Emiliano Buendia averaged 5.15 progressive passes per 90 in the Premier League, suggesting just how significant an impact the Spaniard could have at Villa Park.

Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos.

One player that could benefit from the potential presence of the former Gunner in the squad is new arrival Moussa Diaby, who could take his performances to further heights with an outlet as competent as the Madrid whiz.

As highlighted by FBref, the 27-year-old averaged 1.73 key passes and 1/04 passes into the penalty area per 90 for los blancos last season, showcasing areas that could be of use to the winger.

Once lauded as “dangerous” by former Bundesliga striker Nils Petersen, Diaby could cause havoc if equipped alongside a player as creative in his approach to the final third as Ceballos.

Based on his averages obtained last season in the German top-flight, the Frenchman could frequently be a target for the former Arsenal man to aim for in his progressive exploits, with the 24-year-old receiving an average of 8.60 progressive passes per 90.

Villa’s £51.9m forward needs little chance to score, as suggested by his 14 goals and 11 assists in all competitions last campaign for Leverkusen, however, Emery could unearth a deadly combination by fuelling the playmaking strengths of his former player with the lethal ability of Diaby.

Ashton Agar hurt his finger while fielding in Indore•BCCI

A fractured finger for left-arm spinner Ashton Agar is another setback for Australia after the tourists surrendered their ODI series 3-0 to India in Indore with two matches remaining.Agar broke the digit as Steven Smith’s team were unable to defend 293 against India’s rampant batsmen. He spent time off the field and, though he returned to bowl, he is now out of the tour.”Ashton injured his right little finger whilst fielding in the match last night,” the team doctor Richard Saw said. “Following the conclusion of the match he went for x-rays which have confirmed a fracture of the finger. He will return home to Australia and consult a specialist with a possibility of surgery.”After playing in two Tests in Bangladesh, Agar was not initially part of the ODI team but was included after Adam Zampa was harshly dealt with by India’s middle order in the first ODI in Chennai. Smith was critical of Zampa bowling too full in the match and subsequently preferred Agar. Zampa, who possesses a handsome IPL record, can now expect a recall for the remainder of the series.

Aston Villa Can Land Diaby Partner With £13m Swoop

Aston Villa completed their fourth signing of the summer transfer window this week as they announced the arrival of Nicolo Zaniolo on loan from Galatasaray.

Who have Aston Villa signed this summer?

The Villans had already splashed the cash to sign winger Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen for a club-record £51.9m.

Unai Emery also swooped to land Youri Tielemans on a free transfer from Leicester City and his former Villarreal central defender Pau Torres for a reported fee of £33m.

Read the latest Aston Villa transfer news HERE…

There could be more on the way for Villa supporters, though, as they have been touted with making an addition in the number nine position.

Santos centre-forward Marcos Leonardo has been linked with a move to the club earlier this summer, which suggests that Emery is looking at possible competition for Ollie Watkins.

How good is Marcos Leonardo?

The 20-year-old dynamo, who has reportedly been valued at €15m (£13m) by the Brazilian club, is an excellent young talent who could be an exciting player to play alongside Diaby in attack over the years to come.

Despite his young age, Leonardo has a wealth of experience with Santos as he has already been able to rack up 150 first-team appearances for the club. In that time, the talented finisher has scored 48 goals and provided 11 assists for his teammates.

This year, the prolific ace has scored seven goals and assisted two in 13 Serie A matches. He also enjoyed a fantastic U20 World Cup this summer with a return of five goals in five outings, which earned him a Sofascore rating of 7.44.

Leonardo scored 12 goals in 18 clashes across the two competitions for club and country combined, which is an average of one strike every 1.5 appearances.

Watkins, meanwhile, scored 15 goals in 37 Premier League games – one every 2.47 matches – and averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.88 last season for Villa.

These statistics suggest that the potential is there for the Brazilian youngster, who is seven years younger than the England international, to develop into a better option than the ex-Brentford man if he is able to translate that form over to English football.

Brazil forward Marcos Leonardo.

Having a player like Diaby on the wing to supply him could allow the 20-year-old starlet to thrive as the ex-Bundesliga wizard is a sublime creator.

The 24-year-old magician created 14 'big chances' and produced 1.8 key passes per game in the German top-flight last term, which came after he provided 15 'big chances' and 1.9 key passes per outing during the 2021/22 campaign.

No Villa player, meanwhile, managed more than 1.2 key passes per match last season, which suggests that the French dynamo is Emery's outstanding creative threat and could be a dream player for Leonardo to make runs for.

U23 scout Antonio Mango claimed that the Brazil U20 international has "frightening" pace and this is another reason why he could be a lethal partner for Diaby as the current Villa ace is also known for his speed.

Bayer Leverkusen's website once described the France international as like 'lightning with a run-up' due to his immense pace when bursting forward to attack, which has also been backed up by The Analyst, which hailed his running power as 'searing'.

Therefore, Villa should sign Leonardo as an eventual replacement for Watkins due to the potentially lethal link-up that he could have with Diaby.

Gambhir century keeps Delhi alive in pursuit of 649

The opener struck his second hundred of the season, an unbeaten 135, as he steered them to stumps with six wickets in hand

Gautam Gambhir plays through the off side•AFP

Gautam Gambhir became the third centurion in as many days of Delhi’s Group A Ranji Trophy clash against Karnataka at the KSCA Ground in Alur. But the home team’s bowlers, for the first time in the match, ensured relative parity between bat and ball. Delhi made a determined response to Karnataka’s monumental 649, but lost four wickets in their bid, ending on 277 for 4 before bad light forced stumps 11 overs early. Importantly, though, Gambhir, their seniormost batsman, was still around, having looked steadfast for his unbeaten 135.Gambhir was assured in his footwork and solid in defence as he set about trying to blunt the new ball. He had to double down, with Unmukt Chand nicking behind after Stuart Binny replaced R Vinay Kumar for the 10th over of the morning, and got one to nip away just enough to break the opening stand. Gambhir was intensely focused as he left deliveries away from his body before gradually beginning to lean into his drives. The first session itself did not exactly make smooth progression owing to numerous delays, with people walking around behind the sightscreen despite repeated requests from Karnataka’s fielders. As a result, only 12 overs were sent down in the first hour. The heat of the past few days subsided to make way for a more misty and breezy morning, and the sun came out only an hour into the session. Shortly thereafter came the first arrival of spin as Shreyas Gopal replaced Vinay after an expensive second spell for the captain. Gambhir got his fifty with a neat push through midwicket off the legspinner. He was his usual skillful self against the spinners, stepping out to them confidently and rocking back to cut with ease. Dhruv Shorey was an able ally, and together they hauled Delhi to 126 for 1 at lunch.Shorey raised his fifty in the first over after the break, but Mithun then went past his defences. Shorey, who had looked assured until then, indecisively brought his bat down to a pacy delivery. That marked the end of a neatly and diligently-compiled innings, and the start of a riveting passage of play.Nitish Rana was dropped first ball, flicking uppishly to midwicket, where Manish Pandey was caught napping. That only fired Mithun up more as he steamed in and hit the deck forcefully. Gambhir, however, was unshaken, sussing out the lengths early and comfortably leaving outside the off-stump.At the other end, Rana made up for his first-ball lapse with two pristine cover-drives. Mithun sent down some more chin music; Gambhir responded by pulling boldly, first uppishly behind square, barely dissecting keeper and leg slip, and then a more controlled shot through midwicket. Karnataka squandered a chance to run Gambhir out when he set off for a single after Rana tapped to point. R Samarth was in position but failed to pick the ball up. Gambhir was on 76 at that stage, and Karnataka 166 for 2.Mithun followed up his fiery spell with a spectacular catch at the deep square leg boundary, running to his right after Rana top-edged a pull and getting down just in front of the ropes. Rishabh Pant lived up to his erratic reputation, trying to sweep his first ball – a length delivery – and nearly losing his stumps. Pant kept Karnataka on their toes, checking a pull to a short delivery from Binny but wide enough of midwicket.Gambhir, meanwhile, showed he had oodles of time to respond to pace, and handled the short balls without fuss. Pant then switched modes to put his head down and wait for the bad balls. Gambhir earnestly pursued the hundred, stepping down the track on 98 and finding the fielder, before unleashing a cut off Shreyas to the point boundary. In a reinforcement of his popularity, his effort was acknowledged by the heartiest of cheers for a non-Karnataka player. With Gambhir and Pant settling into a partnership, Vinay decided to rest his frontline bowlers and turned to the part-time offspin of Karun Nair. He nearly shaved Pant’s outside edge when the batsman came forward too early, but was deposited over midwicket for six next ball. Pant saw Delhi through to tea with Gambhir, taking them 234 for 3.He flicked Mithun for another six in the third over after the break, before poor shot selection cost him his wicket. Having been narrowly beaten outside off by K Gowtham off an attempted cut, Pant repeated the same stroke to a delivery that came in with the arm and flattened his middle stump.Milind Kumar survived an appeal for a bat-pad at silly point, shortly after Delhi raised their 250. Karnataka even went so far as to celebrate only for umpire Stephen Harris to merely return Gowtham his cap.Gambhir, meanwhile, continued to middle the ball magnificently. Perhaps the only drawback from his knock was his placement, as he often found the fielders at the covers with well-timed punches and drives. Nevertheless, he continued to grit it out tenaciously. With the sun having only occasionally peeked through the clouds, the umpires drew their light meters out at 4.20pm. Ten minutes later, they strolled off with Delhi 372 behind.

Jaffer 158* powers Vidarbha; Bengal, Services earn bonus-point wins

Ishan Porel’s 5 for 32 helped Bengal inflict an innings defeat on Punjab, who were bundled out for 213 in their second innings, in Amritsar. The bonus-point win took Bengal to second place in Group D.Abhishek Raman resumed batting for Bengal, with him racing to his second 150-plus score of the season early on the day. Following Shreevats Goswami’s dismissal in the 100th over, a collapse was triggered by Siddarth Kaul, as three more wickets fell within the next five overs, leaving Bengal at 316 for 6. The lower order chipped in with 50 more runs, as Bengal declared on 379 shortly before lunch.Although Punjab were off to a decent start in their second innings, seamer Porel prompted a top-order collapse as they lost three wickets in three successive overs. Anmolpreet Singh and Gurkeerat Singh sparked the resistance for Punjab with their 90-run fourth-wicket stand, taking them to 129 for 3 in the next 17 overs. However, Bengal bowlers struck back-to-back, reducing the hosts to 189 for 8, before Porel came back to clear the tail and helped Bengal complete the big win.Diwesh Pathania’s seven-for handed Chhattisgarh an innings defeat as the hosts slipped from 79 for 2 to 133 all out on the penultimate day in Raipur, as Services brought up their first win of the season.Chhattisgarh lost Siddharth Chandrakar and Ashutosh Singh early on the day, following which Abhimanyu Chauhan and Manoj Singh shared a 41-run partnership for the second-wicket. Pathania triggered Chhattisgarh’s first collapse as he dismissed four batsmen within the next eight overs. Rishabh Tiwary, who had retired hurt on the second day, came back to strike a 36-run stand with Sumit Ruikar. The second collapse followed – it was Bahadur’s turn this time, as he picked three wickets in a span of three overs. Pathania returned in the next over and dismissed Prateek Sinha, to finish with match figures of 11 for 86.Wasim Jaffer’s unbeaten 158 underpinned Vidarbha’s dominance as they declared on 427 against Goa on the penultimate day in Porvorim. Following a 117-run partnership with Sanjay Ramaswamy, Jaffer went on to strike an 87-run stand with Shalabh Shrivastava (116-ball 45), taking Vidarbha to a first-innings lead. Ganesh Satish joined Jaffer at the crease for the fourth-wicket, as the pair went on to add 171 runs more before the declaration. In their second innings, Goa lost Sumiran Amonkar and Prathmesh Gawas within the first six overs and were 19 for 2 at stumps, trailing by 169 runs.
