Pink ball and day Tests must remain closely linked – Williamson

Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, has pondered whether day-night Tests may need to be classified as a different format

Kane Williamson, the New Zealand captain, has suggested day-night Tests may need to be viewed as a different format if conditions vary significantly from the day game as New Zealand prepare to host their first pink-ball international next summer against England at Eden Park.In preparation, New Zealand’s domestic teams are playing the current round of Plunket Shield matches under lights this week – the first floodlit first-class cricket in the country – although poor weather is having a significant impact. Williamson, who was part of the inaugural day-night Test against Australia in Adelaide, is a fan of the concept but remains unsure if the red and pink ball behave too differently.”You can’t help but enjoy day-night Tests. Having played in the first one – it was a very cool thing to be a part of,” Williamson said ahead of the first Test against South Africa in Dunedin. “At the same time, it’s a fine balance with trying to keep the purity and tradition of Test cricket, which I think is very important”And if you are introducing another dynamic to a format that has relatively been untouched then it’s very important that it remains very similar in terms of the day game and the night game within the format. If you are making comparisons and there are ranking systems and a bunch of stats that people enjoy, then if the night format is harder or easier or whatever than the day one then it can be very difficult to make those comparisons with any real substance.”It’s important that they get that right. It’s an exciting space to pursue and they are doing it, which I think is great for the game and a lot of people are watching it, but it is important that they get it very closely linked.”In October, when Australia were preparing to play their second day-night Test against Pakistan, Usman Khawaja suggested day-night Tests should be categorised differently.”I would almost like to make pink-ball, day-night cricket a different sort of format on its own,” he said. “That way the players will start accepting it a bit more too, but right now we mix them together. It sort of blurs the lines for bowlers and batsmen because we really haven’t worked it out yet. But it’s a concept that I believe is really good for the game.”Khawaja went on to score 145 in the Adelaide Test and made no mention of whether he stood by his earlier statements in the aftermath. Now, Williamson has raised the subject again although it is unlikely to have any impact on the status of day-night Tests.Williamson is hopeful the format will continue to improve particularly with regards to the ball, which was first criticised for visibility issues with the seam and the speed at which it deteriorated but has since held up well in Tests in the Dubai, Adelaide and Brisbane. Although there are some concerns at domestic level, Williamson is confident the issues will continue to be addressed.”It will be interesting to hear back, what some of the feedback is from the Plunket Shield. Playing in that first pink-ball Test match, we knew there were a few things that needed to be improved on and one of those being the ball. I think they have made a few adjustments on that,” he said. “It was a great spectacle to be part of and it was a great crowd every day. There’s a lot of room for that innovation in the game.”

Arsene Wenger To Get Arsenal Statue At The Emirates Stadium

Arsene Wenger is set to be the next Arsenal legend to get his own statue outside the Emirates Stadium, according to reports.

When was the Emirates Stadium built?

The club's iconic manager played a huge part in the move from Highbury to the club's current home, with plans beginning as early as the late 1990s.

Construction of the venue started in 2004 with a total project budget that amounted to £390 million. A few years on, the Emirates Stadium officially opened on the 23rd of July 2006.

Speaking on beIN Sports (via GIVEMESPORT), Wenger said explained his role in pushing for such a big change, noting he felt it was an important step to take even though it made things complicated in terms of on-pitch success.

He said: “I encouraged the club to do it. It cost £200 million more than we expected it to be.

“We were blocked, we could only spend 50% of the turnover on wages. For example, if the turnover was £500 million we could only dedicate £250 million to wages.

“So we always had to sell our best players because the best players want money.”

No doubt, the lack of resources to keep hold of the club's best players, and bring in new top talent, cost Wenger in the later stages of his time with Arsenal.

Even so, he still departed a legend in 2018 having won 17 trophies during his time with the Gunners, which included three Premier Leagues, seven FA Cups and seven Community Shields.

When will Arsene Wenger's Emirates statue be unveiled?

In an exciting new update about the stadium, Connor Humm – who works for Sky Sports – revealed on Twitter that Wenger will be the next Arsenal legend to get a statue, after Tony Adams, Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry and Herbert Chapman.

In full, he explained: "I understand that Arsenal are set to give Arsène Wenger a statue outside the Emirates which will be unveiled on Thursday 3rd August.

"He joins Tony Adams, Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry and Herbert Chapman with a statue outside the stadium."

After noting that this will happen as soon as August 3, in a follow-up Tweet, Humm also reported that the Frenchman is expected to be there at the Emirates for the unveiling in person.

It will be great to see the club legend honoured for all the success he had with the North London outfit between 1996 and 2018, especially as he has only returned to the stadium once since leaving.

Indeed, last season, in December, despite previously saying he had no plans to watch his old side in action, he was in the crowd to watch Arsenal’s Premier League win over West Ham United on Boxing Day.

At the time, current manager Mikel Arteta warmly welcomed Wenger back, saying (via The Athletic): “Hopefully we can bring him close because I think he would have a great time just seeing the environment that he can create around him when he’s around this place.

“That is because of the respect, admiration and love that everybody at the club has for what he’s done and for what he represents as a person in this club.”

Tottenham Make Contact To Sign £21m Serie A Starlet

Tottenham have made contact over the possibility of signing Juventus left-back Andrea Cambiaso in the wake of Ryan Sessegnon’s latest injury.

Which players are Tottenham signing in 2023?

The Lilywhites have been very active in the transfer window since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival, immediately securing the permanent deals of loan stars Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski.

Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Manor Solomon have also joined, taking the total spend well over £100million if you include the loan to buy deals, but Daniel Levy is showing no signs of slowing down just yet.

That is because attention has now turned to providing his new manager with reinforcements in defence, where Spurs were nothing short of abysmal last season, conceding the most goals of any Premier League side who finished higher than Bournemouth in 15th place.

Clement Lenglet looks to be a likely addition – like Porro and Kulusevski he’s already spent a temporary spell in north London – as rumours are swirling about a deal with Barcelona to bring the France international back.

clement-lenglet-tottenham-hotspur-transfer-gossip-postecoglou-vlad-chiriches

Left-back is now also an area of concern though, as the club confirmed this week that Sessegnon has undergone surgery on his left hamstring after picking up an issue in pre-season training. It’s now hard to envisage a world where Spurs can rely on the former Fulham starlet long-term, such are the extent of his unfortunate injury issues.

And according to Sky Sports Italy, via Sport Witness, Spurs chiefs have submitted an enquiry for an unfamiliar name for most fans in the shape of Cambiaso, presumably to his agents rather than Juventus. A 23 year-old defender who made the move to Turin last summer, he spent the season on loan with Bologna.

The Old Lady have placed a €25m (£21m) price tag on the youngster as they need to recoup some cash to offset Financial Fair Play difficulties, while AC Milan are also interested. Both suitors apparently see that as quite a large sum for a somewhat inexperienced player, but it is “something to keep an eye on” moving forward.

Is Cambiaso a good signing for Spurs?

With Destiny Udogie still an unknown quantity and Ben Davies now into his thirties – and also an option at centre-back – it’s no surprise to see Ange and Levy go shopping for a new option on that flank, and Cambiaso looks like an astute addition at around the £20m mark.

He more than proved he can hold his own in a top European league during his loan spell at Bologna, starting 25 Serie A games with an additional seven substitute appearances, recording three assists.

Cambiaso ranked particularly highly in a number of areas which are sure to appeal to the new Spurs boss – namely shot-creating actions, successful take-ons and tackles, painting the picture of a player who is on the front foot, aggressive and looking to get stuck in and get his team moving forward.

He played a key part in Bologna finishing an impressive ninth in Serie A, ranking in the top ten in his squad for pass completion, tackles per game, interceptions per game and key passes per game, and is also capable of filling a role further forward on the left side of midfield, so could be the perfect option as a wing-back if Ange opts to go that route.

All in all, while neither Spurs or Milan seem happy to pay Juve’s asking price, a deal around £20m for a versatile young player with an impressive season under his belt in a tough league looks a decent a bit of business.

Brilliant Hasan ensures Pakistan take series

With a spell of 4-2-12-2, the fast bowler kept West Indies down to a below-par total of 124 which his team-mates ran down with six balls to spare

The Report by Alagappan Muthu02-Apr-2017
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsHasan Ali bowled back-to-back maidens and picked up two wickets to wreck West Indies•AFP

In a nutshellA no-contest between Pakistan’s bowling attack and the West Indies battling line-up. There were 66 dot balls in the innings – that’s 11 overs out of 20 – and eight of those dots were wickets. Hasan Ali bowled back-to-back maidens and finished with match-winning figures of 4-2-12-2.Chadwick Walton, with 40, and Carlos Brathwaite, who made 37, his new career best, bettering the score he had made at the World T20 final, dragged West Indies to 124 for 8. It was nowhere near enough. Although the pitch at Queens Park Oval was being used for its third straight match, there weren’t enough signs of the ball slowing up. And Pakistan’s top order capitalised. Ahmed Shehzad struck 53 off 45 balls to ensure a seven-wicket victory.Where the game was wonThe middle overs. Yes they exist in T20. For further proof, Hasan did most of his damage through inswingers, which for him, come out best with an old ball. Three out of his four overs came after the first 10 when West Indies fell from a respectable 59 for 2 to a silly 87 for 6. A slide like that might have been justified if there had been a spree of magic deliveries or an invasion of pitch demons. But all Hasan did was bowl full and straight. He understood that was enough by watching the West Indian batsmen set up on leg stump, and wait on the back foot, preferring to have room to free the arms and flat bat sixes. The men who who won itHasan had been hit for a six off the third delivery he bowled. The punishment was dealt to a good length ball – the same kind with which he profited later in the innings. That he still stuck to his strengths against a team known for its big hitting was a sign of the 23-year old’s self-belief. It helped, though, that when he came on for his second spell – 2-2-0-2 – West Indies were stuck in a rut. They were falling behind in the innings and tried to hit their way out of trouble. Not a sensible thing to do against a bowler harnessing a little bit of reverse swing. The instigator of the choke, though, was legspinner Shadab Khan. He also dismissed the opposition’s best batsman on the day – Walton – by teasing him into big shot that only went as far as long-on. The reason for that was the dip the 18-year old generated. In much the same way, he deceived Jason Holder in the 16th over and though he didn’t get Kieron Pollard, he was beating his outside edge repeatedly.Moment of the matchMarlon Samuels had just struck back-to-back sixes. He has turned low totals into match-winning ones before and has had phenomenal success in finals both actual and virtual. There were no such heroics on Sunday because, on the heels of being involved in a bizarre run-out, his middle stump took a beating. Hasan’s wicket-to-wicket line was poorly negotiated by Samuels, who stayed leg side of the ball and attempted a lame glide to third man. His knees buckled and as he sank to the floor, there was almost a look of begrudging approval of a delivery that had been too good for him.Where they standPakistan clinched the four-match T20I series 3-1. The two teams resume their limited-overs battle in the three-match ODI series starting in Guyana on April 7.

Leeds Eyeing Swoop For £5m "Monster"

Leeds United are in desperate need of reinforcements following their relegation back to Championship last season and now a fresh update has emerged on a potential transfer target.

What's the latest on Leeds' interest in Glen Kamara?

According to The Yorkshire Evening Post's senior reporter Graham Smyth, Leeds have "looked at" signing Rangers midfielder Glen Kamara.

Speaking on the Inside Elland Road podcast, Smyth revealed:

"Kamara is one that Leeds have looked at, and it looks very doable and feels very sensible. I don't absolutely love Glen Kamara; I don't think he's always been 100% consistent and dominant in games. I think he could be – it's an area of his game he could improve.

"You want a midfielder to completely run the show, sometimes he does it and sometimes he doesn't. He's more than good enough [for Leeds]. Financially as well, if you cross Rangers' palms with £4.5-5m, but they will say 'thank you very much' and 'thank you very much Leeds, pleasure doing business with you'."

How good is Glen Kamara?

Newly appointed head coach Daniel Farke will be working hard with his recruitment team at Elland Road to identify the right players who can not only bolster key positions that need improvement or have been weakened, but also possess the quality to compete in the Championship next season.

In terms of midfield personnel, the Whites have already parted ways with former loanee Weston McKennie, Adam Forshaw and Marc Roca this summer, so there is definitely room for improvement in the centre of the pitch.

As a result, there could be a great opportunity to bring in a hard-working midfielder like Kamara for a low fee and provide Tyler Adams with a partner to work alongside over the 46-game campaign.

Over 22 Scottish Premiership appearances, the 27-year-old – hailed "terrific" and a "monster" by former Gers boss Steven Gerrard – scored one goal and tallied up an 89% pass completion rate, as well as averaging one key pass, 43.2 touches and 2.2 successful duels per game, as per SofaScore.

glen-kamara-rangers-championship-leeds-transfers

According to WhoScored, Kamara boasts strengths in dribbling and a very strong passing range, with not a single player in the Leeds squad who started more than one game recording a better pass completion rate (89.4%) than the Finland ace, whilst also outperforming McKennie in key passes (1 v 0.7) and accurate passes per 90 (37.6 v 31.1).

Whilst Kamara is an accurate distributor and slightly more progressive on the ball, Adams ranked in the top 18% of his positional peers across the top five European leagues for tackles, interceptions and blocks over the last 12 months, demonstrating that the USMNT star is much more prolific in winning the ball.

Combining the two midfielders' differing strengths could help Farke form an unstoppable force in the deep-lying roles of midfield and ultimately improve Leeds' performances compared to last season.

With that being said, owing to his £5m price tag, Kamara is definitely worth the risk, and if he could emulate his output for Rangers at Elland Road, he would make an ideal signing to bolster the midfield presence ahead of next term.

Abell draws value from another Lord's yawn fest

Somerset skipper Tom Abell found solace in another Lord’s yawn-fest with his first half-century of the Championship season but last season’s top two are still without a win

The top two first division sides of 2016 continue to search for their opening wins of this season’s Specsavers County Championship campaign after Middlesex and Somerset settled on a rain-ruined draw at Lord’s.The two sides shook hands at 4.50pm with Somerset on 161 for 3, representing an overall lead in the match of 246 runs. Visiting skipper Tom Abell was unbeaten with 71 while Steve Davies contributed 23 to an unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 60.The hosts, who have now drawn the opening four matches of their lethargic title defence, banked 10 points. While Somerset, who finished runner’s up last season and have yet to win from their five starts, travelled west with 11 points.Batting again by 12.40pm and having secured a first-innings lead of 85, Somerset lost veteran opening bat Marcus Trescothick with only a single on the board. The former England left-hander ducked into a well-directed bouncer from Toby Roland-Jones to glove a looping catch to wicketkeeper John Simpson and exit without scoring. After lunch Dean Elgar, fresh from his first innings 158 that moved him beyond the 10,000-run milestone for his first-class career, had just posted his 500th run of the championship summer only to fall for 33. Hanging his bat out to dry against Tom Helm, the left-hander edged into the cordon to be snaffled by Ollie Rayner at second slip.Captains’ reactions

James Franklin (Middlesex): “We’re four games in and still haven’t got a win. We’ve performed well in a couple of games and in the others we haven’t been at out best. That said, we’ve shown good resilience throughout and have earned a good reputation around the country for that.”

Tom Abell (Somerset): “Expectations after last season were high and we’ve not lived up to them. Our batting has let us down too often this season, but we have to put that to bed now and concentrate on the next couple of games. We got ourselves into this position, it’s down to us now to dig out way out of it.”

Conversely, Somerset’s captain and No3, Abell, who went into the game with less than 100 runs to his name from his first four championship starts, set out to bat time in a bid to reverse his run of poor form. The Taunton-born right-hander featured in a stand of 42 with James Hildreth that ended when Hildreth departed to the third ball of the match from Middlesex off-spinner Paul Stirling. Making room and shaping to cut, Hildreth toe ended to the keeper and went for 23. Abell marched on, moving past his modest season’s best of 40 just before tea to reach his 10th first-class 50 from 111 balls and with six fours. The clouds converged soon after tea forcing a short break for bad light, after which Simpson, the Middlesex wicketkeeper, removed his pads, tossed the gloves to Stevie Eskinazi and sent down his maiden over in first-class cricket.Simpson, Nick Compton and Nick Gubbins took turns in serving up a series of long-hops and full-tosses to end the match on a somewhat farcical note.At the start of the final day, Middlesex had batted on for another 14 overs in adding 47 to their overnight, first-innings total.Somerset made their first breakthrough after an hour to break an eighth-wicket stand between Tom Helm and James Franklin that added 62 inside 21.2 overs. Playing back in defence to Lewis Gregory’s first ball of the day from the Pavilion End, Helm lost his off stump to a shooting off-cutter to depart for a career-best 28.Last man Tom Murtagh then sliced a drive off Gregory straight to cover point to leave Franklin marooned on 49 not out and end the innings. Adam Voges’ retirement on Sunday with a calf injury ensured he played no further part in the home reply although his unbeaten 86 had eventually helped take his side to within 85 of the Somerset first innings. The day started memorably for Middlesex opening batsman Nick Gubbins who received his commemorative, embroidered Middlesex county cap from India batting legend Sachin Tendulkar during a presentation in front of the pavilion. On an otherwise sombre Monday at Lord’s, however, the county flags flew at half-mast as a mark of respect to the victims of Saturday night’s London Bridge terror attack.
