Everton’s £70k-p/w "Leader" Could Save Dyche’s Skin

Everton are running out of time.

Never in the history of this distinguished football team has divisional football been contested outside the Premier League, but all that could change over the next few weeks.

The Toffees languish in 19th place in the top flight, yielding just 29 points and six victories from 34 matches, though the three teams placed above them boast just one point more than Sean Dyche's men heading into the weekend.

With imminent fixtures against Brighton & Hove Albion, Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers preceding a potentially favourable finale against Bournemouth at Goodison Park, Dyche must find a balance to ensure their status is preserved.

The Blues are currently seven outings without a victory in the Premier League, last prevailing with a late winner against Brentford in March, but with four draws in this period, Dyche will be confident that a coveted triumph is forthcoming.

They will be without veteran stalwart, Seamus Coleman, however, with the 34-year-old Irishman sustaining a knee injury against Leicester City and now unlikely to feature again this term.

Who should replace Seamus Coleman?

Coleman has been a reliable presence this season and has featured 23 times in the top flight, starting 20 times after not playing across the first two months of the campaign.

As per Sofascore, the 67-cap Republic of Ireland international has been impressive this term defensively, recording an average of 1.5 tackles and one interception per match, as well as succeeding in 61% of his total duels, with former boss Frank Lampard calling him an "incredible player" last year.

However, a good worker uses the tools at their disposal, and Dyche must now utilise a new cog down the defensive right flank, and despite his recent red card, we feel Mason Holgate must be picked ahead of Nathan Patterson.

In the looming matches against Brighton and City, defensive uniformity will be paramount, and while Patterson is an exciting prospect, 26-year-old Holgate could be the better fit to adopt his captain's mantle.

Playing just seven times this term and starting on just four occasions in the Premier League, the £70k-per-week dynamo was sent off against Crystal Palace last month in the 80th minute after receiving two bookings, though he did play a role in keeping a clean sheet in the 0-0 draw at Selhurst Park.

mason-holgate-everton-championship-southampton-transfers

Primarily a centre-back, Holgate has played on the right throughout his Toffees career and would bring an element of creativity across this latter phase of the campaign, ranking among the top 10% of top-level defenders over the past year for goals and the top 2% for assists per 90, while he is also among the top 17% for successful take-ons and the top 8% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

The "leader", as hailed by the Liverpool Echo's Sam Carroll, might have been a peripheral figure this term, but his average of 1.8 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 4.2 clearances in the league certainly hints that he can be an effective option, having also won 59% of his ground duels, as per Sofascore.

Coleman's setback can be met with nothing but woe from the Everton camp, but with such little time remaining, slotting Holgate into the starting fold will only aid the club's efforts at cementing their status in the Premier League once again.

£375k-p/w Man City Star Slammed After Disasterclass

Fans online have reacted after Manchester City goal machine Erling Haaland missed a plethora of opportunities against Leeds United.

How bad was Erling Haaland against Leeds?

The Norwegian striker has simply torn English goalscoring records into pieces in his debut Premier League season so far.

Indeed, there are three games left to play in the competition, but the 22-year-old already has scored the most goals (35) in a single league campaign.

This topped Mohamed Salah’s 32 goals for Liverpool in 2017-18 in a 38-game season, as well as Alan Shearer and Andrew Cole’s previous best of 34 strikes in a 42-game season.

However, against Leeds United and Sam Allardyce at the Etihad on Saturday afternoon, Haaland was uncharacteristically wasteful with his opportunities.

While Ilkay Gundogan scored twice to give City a 2-1 win, the £375k-p/w striker missed three big chances, hit the woodwork, fired four shots off target, and finished the game with an xG of 0.98 despite failing to hit the back of the net (via SofaScore).

Perhaps most notably, he missed the opportunity to cap off a beautiful move as Gundogan played a clever outside of the boot to Kevin de Bruyne who, in turn, flicked it perfectly into the path of Haaland.

That alone was bad enough to spark some shocked comments.

But Haaland actually went on to miss a number of other key opportunities and somebody online created a montage of his poor finishing on the day.

Here are some of the best reactions to this…

Haaland of course grew up supporting Leeds – as his father Alf Inge played for the club – and Harry Potter actor Matthew Lewis (who played Neville Longbottom) was left wondering if maybe the misses were on purpose.

Seeing as the 22-year-old also turned down the opportunity to take a penalty, which was then missed by Gundogan, there could be something to this conspiracy…

South Africa have the edge in battle of misfiring batting units

Pacers could have a bigger role to play in St Kitts as Australia and South Africa square off in their third fixture of the tri-series

The Preview by Firdose Moonda10-Jun-2016Match factsSaturday, June 11 2016
Start time 1300 local (1700GMT)Big PictureRound Two. All even. Just about. The Guyana leg of this triangular series resulted in a win for each of the three teams, with South Africa and Australia claiming bonus points. The caravan moves to St Kitts, where South Africa and Australia kick off proceedings on Saturday.Relations between both countries have improved since the sides last met, after South Africa agreed to play a Day-Night Test in Adelaide in November after initially rejecting the idea. It’s only fitting that on the field, they are battling under lights at the moment, with South Africa having the upper hand. After being run down by Sunil Narine and Kieron Pollard in the tournament opener, South Africa surged back to humble Australia, who just two days earlier had brought West Indies down to earth.Bowling has been South Africa’s stronger suit thus far, with Kagiso Rabada and Imran Tahir, in particular, excelling in dual roles of attacking and containing. That has meant time on the bench for Morne Morkel, although he is likely to force his way in at some stage.Australia’s attack has been equally impressive. After restricting West Indies to under 120, they dismissed South Africa for 189. Mitchell Marsh and Josh Hazlewood have been misers and their two spinners – Nathan Lyon and Adam Zampa – have worked well together. That leaves both teams with concerns over their batting.South Africa’s tail was exposed too early in both matches and while Australia were untested in their first outing, they fell apart against quality seam and spin in their second. Some of that may come down to conditions, however. Providence’s slow, spinner-friendly surface made for slow scoring rates and a scant boundary count, but that should change with change in venue. Both line-ups will want to work on partnership-building in what could be an important match in deciding who holds the advantage before they take on the hosts.Form guide(last five completed games most recent first)Australia LWLWL
South Africa WLWWWIn the spotlight Faf du Plessis’ recovery from a finger injury and Dean Elgar’s calls up means there’s that much more pressure on JP Duminy to perform. Duminy has not scored an ODI half-century in eight innings, since July 2015 against Bangladesh. He has had starts in both innings in the tournament, but uncertainty outside offstump has cost him.Unlike Duminy, Australia’s captain Steven Smith hasn’t managed to get into double figures in either of his innings so far. Smith has been out lbw on both occasions while shuffling across his stumps to play through the onside. He will want to get back to the kind of form he was in against India earlier in the year, when he hit a century and a fifty, along with two scores in the forties.Team newsAfter resting Mitchell Starc from their first meeting with South Africa on Tuesday, Australia will be keen to unleash him here. The changing conditions could mean space for only one of Zampa or Lyon, with Nathan Coulter-Nile and Josh Hazlewood forming part of the pace attack.Australia: (probable) 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Steve Smith (capt), 5 Glenn Maxwell, 6 Mitchell Marsh, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Nathan Coulter-Nile, 10 Adam Zampa/Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh HazlewoodRilee Rossouw’s injury should pave way for du Plessis’ return at No. 3 even though Dean Elgar has been called-up as a replacement. South Africa are unlikely to field three specialist spinners again. That would leave them with a choice between Aaron Phangiso, the left-arm spinner, and Tabraiz Shamsi, the left-arm wrist spinner. They may opt for a holding spinner in Phangiso if Morkel gets a game. Shamsi could yet find a place if Kyle Abbott plays.South Africa: (probable) 1 Hashim Amla, 2 Quinton de Kock (wk), 3 Faf du Plessis, 4 AB de Villiers (capt), 5 JP Duminy, 6 Farhaan Behardien, 7 Wayne Parnell 8 Kagiso Rabada, 9 Morne Morkel/Kyle Abbott, 10 Aaron Phangiso/Tabraiz Shamsi, 11 Imran TahirPitch and conditionsThe biggest difference between Warner Park and Providence is the size. Smaller boundaries are likely to mean more big hits, although a livelier surface could bring the pacers into play a lot more than they did in Guyana. The rain threat from Guyana has been reduced to next to nil, although humidity levels could test the players’ fitness.Stats and trivia The average first innings score at this ground is 282, well ahead of the Providence’ average of 211. Both Australia and South Africa have made totals over 300 here, Australia four times including a match-winning 377 for 6 against South Africa at the 2007 World Cup and South Africa once. Warner Park is the venue of Herschelle Gibbs’ six consecutive sixes against Netherlands at the 2007 World Cup.Quotes”I just thought we didn’t pick the ball out of the spinners hand. It’s just the basics of batting. We needed to be a bit more patient, maybe. We talked about adapting, we’ve talked about partnerships. Probably we didn’t do any of those things the other night.”

Man United Have Bid Ready To Snap Up £43m-Rated Defender

Manchester United already have a bid ready and waiting to go for Kim Min-jae according to the Italian media, via Sport Witness.

What is the latest on Kim Min-jae to Man United?

The defender has shone for Napoli since his move to Italy, bagging himself two goals and two assists with one Man of the Match award in 33 Serie A outings. He's impressed even more on the bigger European stage too, with the 26-year-old managing a WhoScored rating of 7.20 from his efforts in the Champions League.

His fantastic showings have come in spite of the fact that this is his first season in Italy. Prior to his move, Kim played for Fenerbache in Turkey and began his career at Beijing Guoan. Even with those two sides though, he never dropped below a 6.60 rating over the course of a season.

Napoli defender Kim Min-Jae.

And these performances have seemingly caught the eye of Man United. The Premier League side have already made it clear that they want to add both a midfielder and a striker during the transfer window, but other reports have added that the centre-back is another player that Erik Ten Hag is eager to bring in.

Now, Italian media, via Sport Witness state that the Red Devils are already in "advanced talks" to snap up Kim and that he could be allowed to leave this summer. It adds that with his release clause of 50 to 60 million Euros (£43 to £52m) setting in as soon as July 1st hits, the side have a bid ready for when that fee comes into place.

Should Man United sign Kim Min-jae?

Man United have several areas of need when this summer transfer window opens, with the forward line arguably their most notable concern. With the Red Devils managing only 49 goals in the Premier League this campaign – and with their highest scoring 'out-and-out' striker Anthony Martial producing just four goals – more goalscoring prowess is definitely needed.

However, improving their backline with Kim would not be a bad thing. He ranks within the top five highest rated players in the Napoli team this season on WhoScored and he's also managed the second best interception rate in the side too with 1.2. He's also been given the name "Monster" by fans and media alike because of his battling performances and physical prowess – which is high praise indeed.

The player then is clearly adept at reading the game and breaking up opposition attacks – and adding a brick wall like him to your defence is never a bad thing.

Newcastle Could Sign World-class £35m Saint-Maximin Upgrade

In what appeared inconceivable several years ago, Newcastle United are in the running for Bayern Munich star Sadio Mane, with the Senegalese forward's future in Germany uncertain.

What's the latest on Sadio Mane to Newcastle?

According to Sky Germany, the 31-year-old has fallen out of favour with the German Bundesliga champions following a high-profile disagreement with teammate Leroy Sané, and Newcastle technical director Dan Ashworth is now mulling over issuing a swoop.

The former Liverpool sensation departed Anfield for £35m last summer, though an injury-affected campaign has indeed been exacerbated by his unwelcome fallout with Sane, consequently demoted in the mind of manager Thomas Tuchel.

Regardless, Mane is one of the most prolific wingers of the modern age and was a pillar of strength for years under Jurgen Klopp's wing in the Premier League, and a return, this time to St. James's Park, could bear fruit for the gem.

Should Newcastle sign Sadio Mane?

While Mane is now 31-years-old, he is still a predatory force on the pitch and has proven through years of solid servitude that he possesses a skill set capable of dismantling even the meanest of Premier League defences.

Having impressed with Southampton before completing a £34m to Merseyside in 2016, notably scoring the Premier League's fastest hat-trick in two minutes and 56 seconds before plundering 120 goals and 48 assists from 269 outings for Liverpool, pivotal in the recent illustrious success of the club.

This season, while he has scored 12 goals and provided six assists from 37 appearances for the Bavarian, the 95-cap Senegal star's future in Munich does not seem tenable, and he may need to seek pastures new once again.

His £374k-per-week wages could prove a stumbling block for many interested parties, though the Magpies boast the affluence to complete a swoop if they do decide to further their interest.

As per FBref, Mane, formerly hailed as "world-class" and a "machine" by Klopp, ranks among the top 5% of positional peers for rate of assists and the top 6% for shot-creating actions per 90, and he could be the perfect acquisition to bolster the ranks ahead of a return to European football next season.

Former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane.

He could even displace Allan Saint-Maximin on the Toon flank, with the mercurial Frenchman not quite reaching the same heights of late despite his outfit's ascension under Howe's tutelage.

Saint-Maximin was signed for £20m from French Ligue 1 side Nice in 2019 and swiftly asserted himself as one of the most guileful wingers in the business, even dubbed a "wizard" by 90min's Graeme Bailey.

He has, however, yet to plunder more than five strikes in a season on Tyneside, scoring just once this year, and has scored a total of 13 goals from 121 appearances for his St. James's Park team, having also supplied 21 assists.

With Newcastle very much on the up, Howe must be ruthless and secure superlative signings if and when it will enhance the club's prospects of success; Mane's signature must be clinched.

Namibia's racism complaint against Afghanistan resolved

The ICC has revealed that it undertook a successful confidential conciliatory process to resolve a complaint made by Cricket Namibia under the anti-racism code during Namibia’s Intercontinental Cup match against Afghanistan in Noida earlier this year

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Jun-2016The ICC has revealed that a confidential conciliatory process was used to resolve a complaint made by Cricket Namibia under the anti-racism code during Namibia’s Intercontinental Cup match against Afghanistan in India earlier this year. The ICC made a statement about the issue through a press release on Tuesday.Following discussions with an ICC-appointed conciliator, all parties agreed that “some of the offence caused by words used by some of the Afghanistan players resulted from cultural differences, a lack of sensitivity and misunderstanding. The Afghanistan Cricket Board accepted that certain words spoken by some of their players in the presence of a Namibian player could reasonably have been expected to cause offence.” Both the board and the Afghanistan players in question offered an apology to the Namibian cricketer involved and stressed “that there was no intention to cause offence on the basis of race, or act in a way that would constitute a breach of the ICC Anti-Racism Code”.The Afghanistan board also agreed that its national squad shall attend an education and training course organised by the ICC, which focuses on “the responsibilities of international cricketers in relation to issues of race, language and cultural sensitivity.”The conciliator appointed in this instance was an “accredited mediator with extensive experience in race relations issues and sports disciplinary matters,” the ICC said. The process also involved relevant parties from both teams in Edinburgh, where the ICC’s annual conference is presently underway. In September 2006, the ICC adopted an amended anti-racism code, which extends to player, personnel and spectator behaviour. In terms of spectator behaviour, the code allowed member countries to impose punishments ranging from ejection from the venue to a life ban if the spectator was found guilty of racial abuse. The process of mediation as a method to amicably resolve such conflicts among cricketers was introduced in October 2009, more than a year after the controversial incident between Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds in Australia that nearly led to India pulling out of the tour. The code included a conciliation procedure to prevent “confusion, misunderstanding, ignorance or language and translation barriers” that could lead to such disputes.David Richardson, the ICC’s CEO, stressed the ICC’s commitment to tackling the issue of racism. “I would like to thank all parties involved for their cooperation in and commitment to the conciliation process,” he said. “I am also extremely grateful to the conciliator for his professional approach. The ICC would like to stress that there is no place for racism within the sport; we are proud of the diversity of the global cricket community and accordingly place the utmost importance on every participant according respect to their fellow players.”The ICC also specified that since all parties agreed that the conciliation process had reached a consensual resolution, the matter was closed and no further comment will be made.
