South Australia’s seam bowlers Joe Mennie and Daniel Worrall were rewarded for breakout seasons with the Redbacks at the SACA state awards night in Adelaide on Friday

ESPNcricinfo staff01-Apr-2016South Australia’s seam bowlers Joe Mennie and Daniel Worrall were rewarded for breakout seasons with the Redbacks at the SACA state awards night in Adelaide on Friday.Mennie took out the night’s major award, the Neil Dansie Medal as the outstanding SA player of the season, and also the venerable Lord Hampen Trophy as the best performed first-class player of the summer.A season haul of 51 wickets in the Sheffield Shield was a major reason for SA’s advance to their first final since 1996, even if they were unable to overcome Victoria over five days at Glenelg Oval.Worrall, meanwhile, was warded the Barry Jarman Most Improved Trophy, in recognition of a season in which he grew from a fringe member of the squad to a widely respected seam and swing merchant, as epitomised by a first innings haul of 6 for 96 in the Shield final. At 24, Worrall still has plenty more improvement left in him, and his brand of bowling may soon attract higher attention.Among other awards, Kane Richardson was named SA’s limited-overs player of the season, Adil Rashid and Sarah Taylor took out the Adelaide Strikers MVP awards, and Taylor also won the Andrea McCauley Trophy as the most outstanding WNCL/WBBL cricketer. In Sydney, New South Wales handed their major awards to Nic Maddinson and Ellyse Perry in a gala ceremony at the Hilton. Maddinson won the Steve Waugh Medal by the narrowest of margins ahead of Mitchell Starc, who played only one Sheffield Shield match for the summer but was unplayable during the early season Matador Cup limited-overs carnival.Maddinson was rewarded for an even spread of performances across the year, even if his Shield run-making was not at the level the national selectors had hoped for. Perry was a most deserving winner of the Belinda Clark Medal as the outstanding female cricketer in the state, having played a leading role for both the NSW Breakers and the Sydney Sixers in the WBBL.Speaking from India, where she is set to take part in the World Twenty20 final with the Southern Stars, Perry said she was extremely grateful for the honour. “This has been a fantastic season for cricket, especially women’s cricket this year with the start of the Women’s Big Bash League,” she said.”This was a huge moment for women’s cricket and to be part of that was an absolute honour and privilege. A huge thanks goes to Cricket NSW for their support of the women’s game. It is a great time to be playing cricket, and I am fortunate to be playing with such a great group of people.”In the BBL and WBBL player of the year awards, Usman Khawaja and Shane Watson shared the Thunder award in a season when the once derided side turned the tables and clinched the title. Stafanie Taylor clinched the women’s award ahead of Rene Farrell. For the Sixers, the opening batsman Michael Lumb squeezed ahead of Brad Haddin to claim the award after a season that disappointed the club’s players, coaches and management. Marizanne Kapp won the women’s award ahead of Perry. In Brisbane, the Queensland wicketkeeper and loyal servant Chris Hartley won his third consecutive Ian Healy Trophy as the Bulls’ most accomplished player for the season. Young batsman Matt Renshaw won Sheffield Shield player of the year, while Nathan Reardon was recognised for his Matador Cup efforts.Beth Mooney took out both women’s awards, as the best performed Queensland Fire cricketer and also the MVP for the Brisbane Heat in the WBBL. The night also featured tributes for the retiring James Hopes and Ryan Harris, who ended his career at the outset of last year’s Ashes tour.

Ervine century gives Hampshire advantage

An accomplished century by Sean Ervine has given Hampshire a scent of their first victory of the season. The Zimbabwean allrounder struck a near-flawless 102 to first steer his side out of trouble and then turn the pressure on to the home team.

The Zimbabwean allrounder struck a near-flawless 102, his 17th first-class century, to first steer his side out of trouble and then turn the pressure on to the home team.Hampshire were all out for 339 in their second innings, leaving Warwickshire a target of 379, which would be the biggest score of the match, in a day and 11 overs. The Bears negotiated those 11 overs without loss and will begin the last day with all results remain possible on a pitch which is flattening out, but on which wickets have fallen in flurries. The third day followed the pattern of an enthralling tussle which has ebbed and flowed throughout. In the morning, the home side were well on top after Hampshire slumped to 108 for 5, only 147 ahead. Rikki Clarke removed Liam Dawson and James Vince with successive balls and Jeetan Patel had Will Smith stumped and Adam Wheater brilliantly caught at slip by Clarke when the ball looped up off an inside-edged reverse-sweep.Hampshire were in trouble but Michael Carberry stayed firm and found an equally resilient partner in Ervine. Batting positively against Patel, they each hit the New Zealander for six and added 86 in 29 overs before Carberry, having completed his tenth score of 50-plus against Warwickshire in first-class cricket, played on to Clarke for 81.Ervine continued to play with power and purpose and found further productive partners in Gareth Berg and Danny Briggs with whom he added 60 and 61. Berg struck a forceful 36 before slicing Keith Barker’s first ball after tea to William Porterfield at gully. Briggs added a breezy 33 to his first-innings 48 before skying Chris Wright to mid-off.Ervine perished next ball to a fine tumbling catch by Tim Ambrose, but even then Hampshire’s last pair Andre Adams and James Tomlinson added 24 – a frustrating little stand for Warwickshire which might just have lifted the target out of their reach.Warwickshire’s openers weathered a testing burst from Tomlinson to survive intact and trim the target by 47, Ian Westwood moving sweetly to 37 from 39 balls, and send a fine match into its final day wide open.Rikki Clarke was pleased with his early-season rhythm with the ball as his 3 for 63 pegged Hampshire back at Edgbaston. But the Warwickshire allrounder knows his team will have to bat well tomorrow to win the game.”It’s evenly poised,” he said. “We will have to bat well. It will be a tough chase, but Division One cricket is tough. It is good that we came through unscathed tonight and now we have just got to bat well tomorrow and get the job done.”Batting has been tricky at times but less so at others on a slowish pitch. The new ball has a bit of carry but after about 25 overs it becomes quite a difficult wicket to get people out on. There are a few little cracks there that may produce a bit of a problem but we just have to bat well on it.”Clarke was the pick of the Warwickshire attack, dismissing Hampshire’s top three – Liam Dawson and James Vince with successive balls and then Michael Carberry. “I felt in both innings that I bowled well and on a different day could bowl a lot worse and get more wickets,” he said. “I am happy with how it is coming out at the minute and hopefully that rhythm and consistency will stick with me throughout the season.”

Adams double leads Leicestershire flogging

Hampshire captain Jimmy Adams struck a season’s-best 231 as Leicestershire’s inexperienced bowling attack was ruthlessly swept aside on the third day at the Ageas Bowl.

ScorecardJimmy Adams made his second first-class double century•PA PhotosHampshire captain Jimmy Adams struck a season’s-best 231 as Leicestershire’s inexperienced bowling attack was ruthlessly swept aside on the third day at the Ageas Bowl.Adams struck 34 fours and three sixes after sharing in an opening stand of 253 in only 61 overs with Michael Carberry, who made his own 110, to help Hampshire to a lead of 194 with a day to go.In response to Leicestershire’s first innings total of 303 built around Angus Robson’s maiden ton, Hampshire raced to 497 for 8 from 104.5 overs. Adams is now likely to declare at some stage in Wednesday’s morning session and then hope to bowl out the division’s only winless county over the rest of the day. With all but 10 overs of the second day lost to rain and bad light, Adams and Carberry, one of the county cricket’s most durable opening partnerships, had no option but to attack from the start of the third. Both should have departed before reaching their 50, Adams expensively missed behind the wicket by Niall O’Brien and then by Dan Redfern off an easy chance at point.Carberry, too, took full advantage of some poor catching and was put down later on 94 in the slips off Charlie Shreck who found edges several times throughout the day without luck.Carberry was the first to go after hitting 18 fours in his third century of the season, caught at the wicket off Jigar Naik attempting to cut, but there was no respite for the Leicestershire bowlers with former Derbyshire left-arm pace bowler Atif Sheikh conceding 114 from 19.5 overs and spinner Naik going for 146 from 28. Even Shreck reached the unwanted century for a single, late reward. Will Smith helped Adams put on another 55 for the second wicket before Alex Wyatt, the most frugal of the visiting bowlers, got rid of Smith soon after the Leicestershire total had been overhauled with consummate ease. Rob Taylor accounted for the potentially dangerous James Vince and Naik got his second wicket when Liam Dawson departed with the score on 397.Adams, who last scored a century at the same stage last season, reached his double ton in the 94th over and grew more belligerent the longer he went on, sharing in a stand of 36 in only three overs with Adam Wheater before lifting Sheikh to mid-on where Greg Smith accepted the opportunity.Sheikh removed Sean Ervine and Wheater was bowled in Shreck’s last bizarre over of the day in which 16 runs also came off it, including five wides. Sheikh’s figures were made to look more respectable when he claimed the wicket of Matt Coles in what proved to be the last ball of a one-sided day but the only compensation Leicestershire can gain is that the wicket was easy-paced and bland throughout although with a hint of turn by the close. They should be able to survive on it but any chance of a first win of the season have long gone.”We knew we had to be positive from the start and attack,” Adams said. “The plan was to be about 200 ahead by the close so we are on course. Tomorrow’s plan is to bowl them out as cheaply as possible. It’s a good track but it is starting to turn. If we can get some early wickets we can put them under pressure.”Sheikh added: “It was nice to get three wickets but they all came from batsmen going for their shots. We came under the cosh with boundaries flying everywhere before lunch and it was a case of sticking with it. The wicket is starting to take spin, which is a worry for us because we are going to have to bat all day just to make sure we do not lose. But I think we can do it.”

Injured Hastings out of West Indies tri-series

Australia fast bowler John Hastings has been ruled out of the upcoming one-day tri-series in the West Indies due to an ankle injury

ESPNcricinfo staff27-Apr-2016Australia fast bowler John Hastings has been ruled out of the upcoming one-day tri-series in the West Indies due to an ankle injury. His Victoria team-mate Scott Boland, who made his ODI debut against India during the home summer, has been called into the squad as a replacement. Hastings flew home from the IPL earlier this month after sustaining the injury to his left ankle while warming up for a match for Kolkata Knight Riders.”John experienced pain in his left ankle during his recent stint in the IPL and had scans upon returning home which have confirmed early stage bone stress of his fibula bone near his ankle,” Cricket Australia’s sports science and sports medicine manager, Alex Kountouris, said.”While laid off with this injury we have taken this opportunity to undertake arthrosporic surgery to remove bone spurs in his left ankle which have been causing him concern for some time and were possibility contributing to the cause of the bone stress.”John had this surgery over the weekend and now requires a period of rest to resolve the bone stress and recover from surgery before he will resume bowling.”The 2015-16 summer had been a renaissance of sorts for Hastings, who returned to the side during the ODI series in England in 2015 after four years out of the team. He went on to be the leading wicket taker from either side in the home ODI series with India and was then named in Australia’s squad for the World T20 in India.

Heartbreak for Brenden Aaronson! USMNT misses golden chance minutes before Braga grab stoppage-time winner against Union Berlin in breathless Champions League clash

Braga came out on top in a wild 3-2 victory over Union Berlin. The Bundesliga side's Sheraldo Becker notched a brace, but a stoppage-time winner from Braga's Andre Castro stole the show.

Becker scored twice in minutes 30' and 37' to put the home side up 2-0 up, but Braga capitalized on a defensive mistake four minutes after the double to get one back before the break. Portuguese winger Bruma equalized just after half-time and then set up Castro at the death to take home the glory.

USMNT midfielder Aaronson was subbed on in the 81st minute, but failed to leave a lasting impact on the match, spurning a headed chance late on. The miss proved costly, as Union lost their second group-stage match of the campaign.

AdvertisementTHE BIGGER PICTURE

Aaronson's loan has been nothing but disappointing so far, and Tuesday was just an amplification of that. He was benched for the second-straight match and for the second time this UCL campaign. He was their last substitute used in the match and only played a total of 14 minutes, and it appears his confidence is drained.

He had a great opportunity to put the German side ahead minutes after entering the match, but missed a point-blank header.

For Union Berlin, it's a second-successive heartbreaking loss in stoppage-time loss in the Champions League. On matchday one, the Bundesliga side fell to Real Madrid 1-0 due to a 94th-minute winner from Jude Bellingham.

Getty ImagesUSMNT IMPACT

Aaronson not starting nor getting regular minutes for Union Berlin has to be a worry for Gregg Berhalter and the USMNT.

With upcoming October friendlies against both Ghana and Germany on the horizon, it's important that the 22-year-old finds both his confidence and his shooting boots as the two matches ahead are their toughest international opponents yet.

GOAL'S RATINGS

Brenden Aaronson (5/10):

Despite coming on late in the 81st minute, Aaronson nearly set up a goal immediately and then missed a point-blank header late; one would argue he has to score in that moment.

Srinath Silva dies of heart attack

Srinath Silva, 66, died of a heart attack in his sleep on Tuesday morning

Sa'adi Thawfeeq30-Sep-2014Srinath Silva, 66, died of a heart attack in his sleep on Tuesday morning.Silva, a right-handed opening batsman, was less than five feet in height but was one of the hardest hitters of his time. A former Sri Lanka poolist, Silva played domestic cricket at the highest level for three decades from the mid-sixties. He represented Moratuwa SC, Colts, Saracens and Bloomfield.Silva was a member of the Sri Lanka Cricket Executive Committee, chairman of the SLC umpires committee and president of Catamarans SC.Silva represented his alma mater Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa for four years from 1962. His first college captain Vernon de Mel recalled Silva’s debut against Wesley College and said the spectators had hooted at Silva because of his small stature.”Srinath quickly silenced the agitated spectators by scoring a hard-hit 30 runs turning boos into cheers,” said de Mel.”However, I was unable to play him in any of the matches for the rest of the season because the master-in-charge said that he was too small to play in a first-eleven team,” De Mel said.Silva and his contemporaries Wirantha Fernando, Sripal Silva, Pemlal Fernando, Ransiri Peiris and Jayantha Perera left Moratuwa SC and joined Colts over a captaincy issue.”He was such a kind-hearted person that when a disciplinary matter came up concerning Sri Lanka cricketer Lahiru Thirmanne he left the committee saying, ‘I hate questioning people you finish it off’,” said de Mel.

Alexander-Arnold studies Stones' midfield successSouthgate eyes Alexander-Arnold as a midfielderLiverpool's hybrid role propels him to follow the sameWHAT HAPPENED?

The England full-back has been deployed as a defensive midfielder by Jurgen Klopp at Anfield which has forced him to watch and learn closely from John Stones who has also adapted to playing in an advanced role from being a centre back.

Gareth Southgate believes in the potential of Alexander-Arnold and envisions the Liverpool star's future in midfield amid stiff competition in the right-back position from Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier and Reece James.

Getty ImagesAdvertisementWHAT TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD SAID

Alexander-Arnold revealed that he keenly follows the game of Stones, is an admirer of Rodri and watches legends from the past like Steven Gerrard to get a grip on his position.

"I think as someone who plays the inverted role, or whatever people want to call it, then obviously John Stones is the example of who to watch," he said.

"He is exceptional and I’ve admired his game for a long time. I look at a lot of his clips and even when I’m watching City play, I will sit and focus on him. I admire Rodri. He is pivotal to City and massively underrated. They are not the same without him. l’ll also watch midfielders from the past to learn from; Sergio Busquets, Xabi Alonso, Andrea Pirlo, Stevie G. They are players I have always enjoyed."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Alexander-Arnold was labelled a midfielder by The FA and the player revealed he has held extensive talks with the team management about his new role and the classification isn't just for show.

"The conversations I’ve had with the England manager and staff, I go there as a midfielder," he said.

"That is where I train and where I try and play on the pitch, barring the last Australia game. It helps me because I’m not playing midfield every week with Liverpool. Being in midfield is a lot different to at the side of the pitch. I am learning how to receive the ball in central areas."

While talking about his role at Liverpool he added: "The way I see it and has been explained to me, it is almost when we have the ball I am a midfielder, and when we don’t I am a right-back. Sixty per cent of the game, I am in midfield. It’s about playing with freedom to get on the ball and try and create and make things happen, to progress us up the pitch. And when the ball advances towards us, it becomes more about protection and stopping counter attacks."
